Our College Board Chair, Dr Marnie O'Neill, then presented welldeserved awards to the top performing students in each course. We would like to further congratulate our Class of 2023 for their resilience in what was an extremely challenging final two years of their schooling and for reaching such a significant milestone. YEAR 12 BREAKFAST GOODBYE STUDENTS!

To celebrate our Year 12's final day of schooling, Sevenoaks’ staff ran a beautiful breakfast for students to enjoy in the College cafe and courtyard. Staff arrived (very!) early to cook up a delicious feast before the 2023 Yearbook was handed out to students. There was shirt signing, hugs, tears and even a blow up dinosaur before students had their final Presentation Ceremony rehearsal. After a big group photo, students left the campus for the last time. We are missing you all so much already!

BACK ON THE RACK SEVENOAKS’ BRAND NEW OP SHOP

We are excited to announce that SSC will soon have its very own op shop! This student run initiative has been in the making for over 6 months and is thanks to our Back on the Rack op shop committee and support from the City of Canning. Students surveyed the cohort to gauge interest and preferences for items to be stocked, times to be open, how often they are likely to visit, etc. Students voted on the name, created the logo and produced all marketing and signage for the space. An old workshop has been completely transformed with new flooring, paint, curtains, storage and displays to create the perfect space for our little store. Back on the Rack has been accepting donations from the community and will be offering a range of goods for sale including: uniforms, school supplies, hygiene products, clothes, shoes, accessories and more! See you for the grand opening in 2024!

NATIONAL CARERS WEEK THANKS CARERS WA!

National Carers Week was early this term. A time to recognise, celebrate and raise awareness about the 2.65 million Australians who provide care and support to a family member or friend. Huge thanks to David from Carers WA who came out and chatted with students at lunchtime about future pathways in this industry, you’re a legend!

BIG PICTURE ACADEMY NEWS PAMPER DAY

It may have been Melbourne Cup Day but in the Big Picture Academy we were enjoying a lot more than a day at the races! Big Picture staff again hosted the annual “Pamper Day” where students are able to access a range of fun and stimulating activities directed at taking care of themselves both mentally and physically. We would like to thank Sam and Valentina from the City of Canning, who kindly donated their time and enthusiasm all day, offering access to their Gaming Van and joining our activities. Resh ensured our brows were perfect and the Michelles offered nail art and tea leaf reading. Sue encouraged the students’ inner ‘hippiness’, creating fabulous tied dyed pillowcases and Jen made sure we were all fed and watered. A big thankyou to Dani for judging our creative hat competition. We then stopped along with the rest of the nation for the Melbourne Cup before continuing our day with the Stealing Santa game. There was, quite literally, something for everyone! All our students left with a pressie and a smile.

INTERSCHOOL BAND PRACTICE

What do you get when you have a musical space, four talented students and a local celebrity rock star...? Well in this case you get an epic four hour musical rehearsal and some awesome tunes! The Big Picture Academy were lucky enough to host the first interschool band rehearsal for Delay, a rock band made up of Big Picture students from Kelmscott SH, Kiara College, Northam SH, Thornlie SH and Sevenoaks Senior College. As if that wasn't exciting enough, Ashley Doodkorte, the drummer from Voyager (the Australian entry at this year's Eurovision Song Contest) has stepped in to mentor the band. This is quite a coup for a young band and under his expert tutorship, we are sure that they will learn a lot. Ash was very impressed with how much the group improved in their first face to face meeting. It was such a fun day and the energy in the room was infectious. Good luck to the band and hopefully we will see them back here at the College for a future performance.

PRESENTATION CEREMONY It was fantastic to see so many of our Big Picture Academy students attend the Presentation Ceremony this year. You all looked fantastic and we are incredibly proud of each and every one of you. This year's Big Picture award winners were: Ella Giovenco (pictured left) - Sevenoaks Big Picture Academy Award Daniel Duke - Certificate II General Education for Adults Alana Plowman - Certificate II Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways Braxton Palmer - Certificate III General Education for Adults

SEVENOAKS SENIOR COLLEGE

FROM THE PRINCIPAL DR KAREN READ

Well, I can't believe that this is our final newsletter for 2023. This newsletter summarises all of the events over the last term and it has indeed been one of the busiest over the year. The highlight was farewelling our year 12 students. Even though they were only with us for two years they have made an incredible impact on us and their endeavours to build a wonderful student community being one of the highlights. They have been active in everything that they have done and have been the perfect role models for the year 11 students and of course when they are out in the community, being great ambassadors for Sevenoaks Senior College. As you will see there are many pictures and award winners from our presentation ceremony in this newsletter and we congratulate all of our students who were the recipients of these awards and also all students who have achieved success in this final year of their formal schooling. A highlight was hearing about their intentions for 2024 as they moved gracefully across the stage. There were a wide range of career pathways including university, TAFE, training and the workplace. Another highlight for us was seeing our students achieving our mission of find your future and young adult ethos as they proudly received their portfolio of their achievements. If there is one thing that Sevenoaks students represent, it is their cultural and social diversity. Together, over the past two years, they have built a community in which all students could feel connected and a sense of belonging. Our two co-captains Charzie Janovro and JV Francisco have led the students with enthusiasm ensuring that Sevenoaks students were always welcomed and engaged. We wish all of our Year 12 students the very best for their future and we do hope that they come back and see us and share their stories. I am forever amazed at the energy and enthusiasm of our teachers and our support staff who provide ongoing opportunities for our students both within and outside the classroom which is evident in this newsletter. A whole range of events and activities have kept the students engaged with visits to many different places to support their learning. Well done to our teaching and support staff in making Sevenoaks such an engaging environment. I also like to acknowledge the work of the College Board led by Dr Marnie O'Neill for their exceptional support of our students and programmes that we offer. The Board provide a lot of support to the leadership of the College in making sure that we make the best decisions for our students. Alongside this, our industry and business partners are always there to support us in providing guidance and feedback and indeed giving apprenticeships and employment opportunities to some of our students. I have been very grateful for the support of all of these people for their time and their energy towards Sevenoaks.

I would like to wish all students and their families the best for a wonderful and relaxing holiday season. We will certainly miss you but it's time for you all to have a lovely break and we will look forward to welcoming you back in 2024. - Dr Karen Read, Principal

EXCURSIONS & INCURSIONS YEAR 11 REWARD ACTIVITY - HOYTS CAROUSEL In week 3 this term, we ran our very first Year 11 reward activity, which was kindly organised by Year 11 Coordinator, Ms Bonnie Mcleay. Students who achieved a 90%+ attendance over a 4 week period were invited to come along to a free movie evening at Hoyts Carousel. After a close vote by the students, the movie of choice was Spiderman: No Way Home. We had an awesome time and students were commended on their impeccable behaviour.

HUMAN BIOLOGY - ZOO EXCURSION The Year 11 ATAR Human Biology students had an excursion to the Perth Zoo early this term. The purpose of the excursion was to familiarize themselves with our Primate cousins and attend an educational experience in the Education Centre. The students were immersed in information about all the Primates, particularly the Great Apes and Monkeys. Following a snack, CCC students got to look through the Year 11 Visual diaries with SSC students and discuss life at Sevenoaks. This gave the CCC students an opportunity to ask questions, chat with our students about what they create in visual art and textiles, and what to expect when they start school with us in 2024. Our Hospitality teacher, Mr Brent Armstrong, was invited to CCC to help run a demonstration, where students crafted some beautiful animals out of chocolate! GRAPHIC DESIGN - LASER CUT PROJECT

In this laser cut project, Year 12 Design Graphics students used Adobe Illustrator to create a series of acrylic keychains, bag tags, magnets, and pins. They began the design process with brainstorming ideas and sketching their designs. Following this, they translated them into detailed designs to scale in the software. Each design was thoughtfully structured to include a backing piece, a top layer, and any necessary inserts. Students took extra care to ensure precise measurements and mark engraving and cut lines to the required specifications. The acrylic colours were agreed upon collaboratively as a class. After receiving the cut pieces, students assembled them, resulting in the final products pictured left. Awesome work students, we’re so impressed with your creativity! NOVEMBER 2023 NEWSLETTER
