Helloandwelcometoourtermthreenewsletter.

In the last week of term two we celebrated NAIDOC week: For Our Elders. It was an inspiring event, led by community elders, including our very own Kayleen Hayward. We were welcomed with a traditional smoking ceremony to the beautiful sounds of the didgeridoo. Our Elders delivered inspiring messages to our students, whilst we were entertained with Aboriginaldanceandsongthroughourstudents. Our

Harmony Across Borders students presented some very strong messages of support to our Aboriginal students. Afterwards our special guests enjoyed traditional Aboriginal food for lunch. This was a truly amazing eventcoordinatedbyFollowtheDreamCoordinatorJennetHansen, onewhichensured, everybodybelongs.

Now, this term has been full of events and activities for our students. We commenced the term focussed on our health and wellbeing with daily events coordinated by our wonderful student services team. Students engaged with great enthusiasm creating a very positive atmosphere for staff and students. The week culminated with the social event of the year, the College Ball. Our students were a credit to themselves all lookingabsolutelyamazingandrepresentingSevenoakswithpride.

Book Week celebrations and Wear it Purple Day were held during week six, continuing the opportunity for students to belong to our community. Students also shared their talents with Sevenoaks Got Talent, a fun filled afternoon of entertainment. Our sport teams have been great in volleyball and soccer. Our students excel at team sports, their team spirit and cooperation during tournaments make them fantastic ambassadors for Sevenoaks. Our small business students raised money for the Muslim Women’s Support Centre through their Flour in Love pop up fundraiser. Our hospitality students were exemplary in hosting the annual mocktail event. Our future scientists participated well with Science Week activities. Our term finished with R U Ok? IN THE CLASSROOM

BUSINESS - FLOUR IN LOVE POP UP CAKE STALL

Our Year 11 Business Management & Enterprise and Certificate II Workplace Skills students operated their pop-up business ‘Flour in Love’, a bakery shop, mid term. This project was aimed at raising money for the Muslim Women’s Support Centre (MWSC), who provide much neededshelterandsupportforvictimsofdomesticviolence.

This project has allowed our students to apply and demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understandings gained from the business courses through a hands-on-approach. The students surveyed staff and students on which items to produce to better cater for our school population (anything containing chocolate was a clear winner). The students also discussed different business names and created multiple logo designs to choose from. They also created promotional vouchers, flyers, posters and banners to advertise the event Students also liaised with our Communications and Media guru, Dani, to promote the event digitally.

The students were actively engaged in producing and packaging the baked goods using our school’s hospitality kitchen facilities. On the day of the bake sale, the students presented themselves professionally, interacting with staff and students while demonstrating great customer service, collaboration and team work. The students raised over $550 which will be donated to the MWSC. Our business students should be commended on their efforts in raising money for a worthy cause. A big thank you to all staff and students for their donations and support of thisproject.

HOSPITALITY - MOCKTAIL EVENT

Our annual Sevenoaks mocktail party was another huge success this year thanks to our hardworking and talented hospitality students! Staff and students were treated to a selection of delicious savory and sweet finger foods prepared and served by our Certificate II Hospitality students as part of their service assessment. Well done to everyone involved!

SCIENCE - EXPERIMENTS, EXCURSIONS & THE SCIENCE WEEK QUIZ!

This term was an incredibly busy one for our Science students. We had Rube Goldberg experiments, rocket launches, rat dissections and an excursion to the Harry Perkin's Institute too! In week 5, we also celebrated National Science Week with our annual Advocacy Science Quiz! It was a tight race with multiple advocacy's coming close to winning. But in the end, AG05 & AG17 took out the pizza lunch prize, both scoring a perfect 10! Thanks to everyone who participated and our wonderfulLabTech,Sonia, fororganisingsuchafunquiz!

WELLBEING WEEK

This term, we held the annual Wellbeing Week which included multiple activities that introduced and reinforced the need for: physical fitness, nutrition, personal pampering, holistic self-care, and open mindedness to cultural and lifestyle diversity among our community

We had a large number of local community service organisations join us in celebrating Wellbeing Week during our services expo, introducing our students to many services and products that are available with activities and free gifts to assist them in maintaining a well-balanced existence

After an opening address from our Principal, Dr Karen Read, students got the opportunity to engage in a number of activities and workshops over four days. This included: blender bike smoothies, live music, a pamper station, gong therapy, a silent disco, staff vs students volleyball match, badge making and gardening. Thanks to every single person who contributed and helped out, our Wellbeing Week was a smashing success.

NAIDOC

FOR OUR ELDERS

Students, staff, parents, and community members gathered to celebrate NAIDOC 2023 late in Term 2. This year’s theme was ‘For Our Elders’, encouraging us to celebrate our Elders with a deep sense of respect and gratitude for their wisdom, strength, and resilience.

Our NAIDOC Assembly commenced with a spiritual beginning: a sacred smoking ceremony which is a tradition deeply rooted in Indigenous culture. As the school community assembled to walk into the gym, they moved through the smoking of native plants which carry spiritual significance of purifying the space Ciennah Nestoridis, in a remarkable display of talent and leadership, took the reins as the MC of the assembly. Our Harmony Across Borders students delivered a powerful message of solidarity and unity in action as they articulated the meaning of being a true ally.

Listening to the voices of Indigenous elders, acknowledging their guidance, and valuing their role as keepers of tradition and knowledge was central to our assembly, with Robyn Collard delivering the Welcome to country, and Jacqui and Gerald Eades sharing their journey. This served as a powerful way to educate and inspire the students fostering a greater appreciation for the Elders, Indigenous culture, and heritage. Our Elders, including our Senior Teacher Kayleen Hayward, were honoured by the students with gifts of flowers and framed certificates Follow the Dream Alumni and Save the Children mentor, Jayden Helwig, took the stage after the Elders as a powerful testament to students that they too can lead the way

The College community then gathered for a delightful culinary journey through Indigenous culture Heartfelt thanks to all the students, teachers, and community members who made this event a resounding success.

This year, we raised $423.00 for Dandelions WA to help kids in need Congratulations to our winners Vuti (1st), Ira & Charzie (2nd) and Alina & Nutial (3rd). We want to thank all of our fabulous performers, our wonderful judges; Mayor Patrick Hall, Mrs Trayler and Iby, our hosts Seed and Alfredo, and the Student Guild for running an amazing production, plus all the students and staff who came along to support this awesome event! Truly a highlight of the year for all those involved.

R U OK? DAY

HERE TO HEAR

This year we celebrated R U Ok? Day on Thursday September 14th. Our Student Services team ran a number of activities during recess and lunch time which included: a lolly guessing game, a mindfulness colouring station, badge making, a photo booth with props, pancakes, friendship bracelets and a "warm and fuzzies" message board. A huge thank you to our student and staff helpers and to everyone who got involved!

R U OK? Day may be over for another year, but it is vital we keep the conversations going Any day that you are concerned someone is struggling, trust your instinct and ask, “are you OK?", because a conversation could change a life. At Sevenoaks, there's always someone "here to hear".

BOOKS MAKE YOUR MIND GROW BOOK WEEK

Book Week is always a fun celebration on our school calendar. This year’s theme was "Books Make Your Mind Grow" and students were invited to participate in games focusing on reading and literacy and to dress up as a favourite book character. We had great participation from students and teachers alike, and all those who did dress up for the day were invited to a celebratorypartyheldintheLibraryduringAdvocacy.

Our display resources for this fun event were beautifully supported by Taskia and our incredible Graphic Design students who all provided the inschool advertising resources for the celebration. It was great to see all our advocate groups working hard to solve the blurred cover and Emoji book competitions.Congratulationstoourwinners,Advocacy8,15and19.

This year we again ran our Book Face competition, which required students to strategically line up their face or body alongside a book cover so that there appears to be a melding of life and art. Congratulations to Charzie andEllawhotookoutthebookprizes.

BIG PICTURE ACADEMY NEWS

NORTH METRO TAFE EXCURSION

The Big Picture Academy visited the North Metro TAFE campus in Leederville on August 10th to check out the courses and facilities on offer for students interested in a career in Music, whether it be performing, creating,managingand/orpromoting.

As always, the students on campus were friendly and inviting as we were given an in-depth tour of the digital sound and practice studios. We were lucky enough to see a performance from an up-and-coming Perth band as well as students creating their very first songs for public performance. We were all impressed by the talent and professionalism we saw, but very surprised to discover that we were listening to first year students. We were also given the opportunity to be interviewed live on air at Boom! Radio, takingpartinashortdiscussionsetandquickquiz.

The whole experience was truly inspiring and, as a result, there will be several Sevenoaks students applying to complete Certificates and DiplomasatthisTAFEcampusinthenearfuture.

WELSHPOOL FIRE STATION EXCURSION

If you have ever wondered what its like to be part of the Emergency Services you could do no better than talk to the crew down at Welshpool Fire Station. We were lucky enough to be invited to spend the morning with B Crew and enjoyed a personalised tour of the facility. The station master was full of great advice for our students who were interested in careers as firstrespondersorfuturefiries.

We were also treated to an emergency simulation of a car accident, complete with flashing lights and the jaws of life equipment. We were all very impressed, particularly considering the weight of the equipment and PPEinvolved.

Career opportunities are excellent for positions in this area, especially for women who have the drive, ambition and fitness to succeed. Career development can be fast once your probationary period is completed. What was clear from our time there was, that the team are a close knit family who have each other’s backs. SKILLSWEST CAREERS AND EMPLOYMENT EXPO

Students from the Big Picture Academy attended Western Australia’s largest careers and employment event, Perth Skillswest Careers and Employment Expo at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre in July. The Expo hosted over 130 organisations and employers with career opportunities for the students to explore. Our students enjoyed the opportunity to gain free career advice, discover jobs of the future and to try new skills in the Try'aSkill zone. This was an awesome opportunity and the students thoroughly enjoyed attending this event. There were also prizes and goody bags which were enjoyed by all, including the staff!

BOOLA BARDIP EXCURSION

On Thursday 7th September, students from the Big Picture Academy visited the city museum, Boola Bardip. This means "many stories" in the Whadjuk Nyoongar language. There were five levels of facts and artifacts, too much to really fully appreciate on a single visit The building itself is superb and it was lovely to see our students who remembered what it used to be like, appreciate how the old and new have been knitted together We were relieved that the blue whale still had pride of place in the original museum, along with other WA treasures including our local fauna, some of which was alive, which we didn't expect. Whether you are interested in our changing landscape, our colourful history or "Heart, Country, Spirit" - Ngalang Koort Boodja Wirn, there is so much to see We had a great day out and we all learned something new.

BPA LEAVERS CELEBRATION

The BPA Advisory Staff said a sad goodbye to their students at our annual Year 12 Celebration Event. Once again we headed off to Carousel Strike Bowling and Laser quest for our staff versus students showdown. Laser tag was fast and furious and all our staff held their own, despite being massively outnumbered In the bowling we fared less well, putting on a downright embarrassing performance. More importantly we all had great fun despite the low scores We followed up with a pizza lunch and our Super Star Comedy Awards at Kent Street Weir. Goodbye to all our Year 12 students. You have been outstanding over the last two years and we will miss you all. Good luck in your future endeavours and stay true to your hopes and aspirations. Don't forget us and keep in touch!

JOHN CURTIN GALLERY EXCURSION

This term we were fortunate to view the collection of Carrolup artworks at The John Curtin Gallery, a truly unique and precious resource Lost overseas for more than 60 years, the exquisite artworks by young children of the Stolen Generations offer a rare glimpse into the lived experiences of Aboriginal children at a time when systemic racism and discrimination under Government policies tore Indigenous families and culture apart.

Curtin University is now embarking upon an ambitious project to create a permanent, protective home for these artworks that will become a centre for truth-telling and reconciliation in perpetuity Our students were very emotional on viewing the collection and were filled with awe at the resilience of the children at Carrolup

TUTORING

Thank you to Senior Teacher Kayleen Hayward for spending time with Follow the Dream tutors to help them build an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Kayleen shared with tutors real stories, history and knowledge which tutors need to be aware of to foster a fairer, safer, and more respectful environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at Sevenoaks

The Follow the dream program is now in its 20th Year at SSC. It plays a crucial role in addressing the educational disparities that First Nations students in Australia often face. By offering tailored support, fostering cultural awareness, and promoting academic achievement, it strives to empower First Nations youth and pave the way for a brighter future.
