The Oxy introduces three unique options Designed and implemented by Servomex, our innovations greatly raise the standard for comparable units, delivering cost savings in installation and operational performance.
4
1
Servomex’s determination to deliver users the most safe, accurate and reliable levels of measurement remains at the forefront of its design philosophy – and Servomex’s unique Flowcube flow sensor (see inset) has been placed after the measurement outlet, guaranteeing accurate flow alarm settings for all uses, including safety applications.
2 3
An innovative, fully heated sample compartment removes the requirement for a sampling conditioning system on all samples with a dew point of up to 50 degrees centigrade. Responsible for up to 80% of failures in comparable units, sample conditioning failure is a major cause of unplanned downtime. The heated sample compartment design reduces this risk of downtime by the removal of coolers, dryers and other conditioning devices. This design improves operational cost as well as initial system and integration costs, making it especially ideal for use where ‘wet’ gases are to be measured. Finally an integrated pressure compensation system not only compensates for barometric pressure but also for back pressure variations from flare stacks, enabling emission compliance targets to be easily met. Both the flow sensor and pressure compensation system technologies report via the instrument’s standard communication options, providing all measurement and safety benefits without the need to install additional devices and cost-hungry cabling.
The industry-leading status of SERVOTOUGH Oxy was confirmed when IT won the prestigious Gold award in the Gas Analysis category of the Golden Gas Awards. The Golden Gas Awards, sponsored and presented by Gases & Instrumentation International, attracted entries on new products from all major global gas technology manufacturers. With an exceptional range of options and functions,
the Oxy was submitted on the basis of setting new standards of flexibility, stability and reliability in a single, cost-effective unit at a mid-range price point. Each entry was rated by an independent panel of industry experts on
Offering an exceptional range of industry-standard options and three unique, ground breaking functions, the award-winning SERVOTOUGH Oxy sets new standards of flexibility, stability and reliability from a single, cost-effective unit.
five criteria, based on the product’s ability to: solve an important challenge to the gas industry; technological innovation; environmental ‘green’ attributes; superior specifications in terms of power requirements, speed, footprint, portability
The Oxy delivers enhanced operation functions that maximises flexibility of configuration and application of use. As well as fault and calibration histories, all units offer NAMUR-compliant relay functions, allowing two concentration alarm levels and maintenance required, service in progress and instrument fault messages to be communicated remotely. A comprehensive Modbus protocol allows remote communication and interrogation of the unit as standard via RS485, as well as an option for Ethernet connectivity. Autovalidation and autocalibration functions allow users complete flexibility for unmanned or remote operation, or to generate maintenance and reliability schedules using trending information. Stainless steel pipe work, automatic range change, fixed background gas compensation and measurement filtration are also now included as standard.
What is
flowcube Technology? Servomex’s innovative Flowcube technology for the first time enables multiple system diagnostics and data trending to be ascertained from flow measurement. While operators have traditionally had to rely on ‘flow or no flow’ status information which can only shut down a process when a potential error is detected, Flowcube enables the Oxy to produce accurate trending of the overall sample system. Positioned at the outlet of the Oxy’s precision measurement cell to guarantee a representative sample is present at all times, Flowcube introduces a sophisticated two-stage alarm capability which includes a ‘maintenance required’ trigger stage alongside the standard critical fault signal. Flowcube allows sample system issues to be dealt with before they cause measurement
and maintenance; cost effectiveness; and other quality considerations. The Oxy was able to demonstrate overwhelming advantages and innovations across all categories, earning it the Gold Award.
problems and new flexibility is offered by diagnosing problems early and scheduling maintenance accordingly. Trending data is reported via an instrument’s digital communications, enabling users to monitor sample system performance over time to reduce the risk of system failure. Flowcube technology therefore enables Oxy operators to avoid costly plant downtime by allowing the scheduling of routine safety checks and sample system maintenance – a particularly useful function where operations are being run with minimum personnel on-site. With no consumable parts, an almost indefinite field service life and no special gases or setup required, Flowcube delivers low cost-of-ownership with just a simple calibration procedure required at a minimum of twelve months. Flowcube is also certified intrinsically safe (EEx ia) for use in hazardous areas and with continually flammable gases, and forms part of the Oxy’s SIL 2 assessment for use in Safety Integrated Systems.
Key Applications • Process control • Safety critical oxidation such as ethylene oxide and propylene oxide • Flare stack analysis • Product purity • Feedstock clean-up • Inerting or blanketing

Servomex Combustion Solutions SERVOTOUGH
FluegasExact
Zirconia
Calorimetry
Armed with an integral sampling system, custom-designed for operation in some of the hottest and most extreme combustion environments, the FluegasExact is the analyser of choice for the most demanding hydrocarbon processing applications. At the heart of the SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact’s exceptional performance are Servomex’s zirconium oxide cell for oxygen measurement and a thick film catalytic sensor for measuring carbon monoxide and COe combustibles. Able to measure oxygen on a wet basis, the FluegasExact’s advanced zirconia technology requires no external sample conditioning system, while minimal calibration requirements and a long operational life of up to ten years ensure reduced maintenance costs. The FluegasExact’s thick film calorimeter technology monitors CO levels with high precision, giving sufficient sensitivity and speed of response to enable the combustion process to be continuously optimised for 6
Building on the success of the acclaimed Fluegas combustion gas analyser, the SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact integrates Servomex’s unique Flowcube flow sensor technology to give users even more confidence in their combustion gas measurements. increased process safety and efficiency. Combined, the performance of both technologies improves flame stability, reduce NOx, SO3 and CO emissions and has been proven to save up to four percent of fuel costs per year. Both sensors are installed in Servomex’s custom-designed heated sensor head, which has low-flow extractive design that attaches directly to the flue. Manufactured to the highest quality standards, this ensures exceptional performance in the toughest environments and with the minimum of maintenance. The FluegasExact’s exceptional measurement sensor capability is augmented by Servomex’s advanced Flowcube flow sensor technology. Delivering an industry first by enabling true system diagnostics of the sample flow, Flowcube gives total assurance that the measurement is valid and responding within specification. Placed in-line with the measurement sensors, Flowcube allows user-defined alarm levels to be set with confidence, either to enhance preventative maintenance or to act as a flow failure alarm output.
Flowcube technology therefore enables operators to implement a preventative rather than reactive agenda for analyser flow control, avoiding costly plant downtime by allowing the scheduling of routine safety checks and sample system maintenance – a particularly useful function where operations are being run with minimum personnel on-site. In addition, a new Sulphur Resistant combustibles sensor enables the thick film sensor to operate at elevated levels of high sulphur where excess levels of SO2 can inhibit traditional catalytic sensor function. Customer-designed for high temperature processes up to 1750°C (3182°F), the FluegasExact is ideal for use in extreme heated environments. This resilience makes it the analyser of choice for controlling a wide range of combustion processes, including use in process heaters, utility boilers, thermal crackers, incinerators and furnaces.

Tuneable Diode
Laser Spectroscopy
A major development in Servomex’s gas analysis technologies has been the introduction of Tuneable Diode Laser Spectroscopy (TDLS) technology:
commonly known as Laser. A single line, ‘monochromatic’ spectroscopy that offers various advantages over ‘multi-chromatic’ IR, TDLS offers a range of benefits including highly stable readings, continuous and fast in-situ measurement and low cross interference from other gases. TDLS consists of a tuneable diode laser light source, transmitting optics, an optically accessible absorbing medium, receiving optics and detector. Particularly suitable for in-situ cross stack measurements, a typical TDLS system consists of the laser emitter module and receiver mounted across the process pipe line or flue stack. The gas concentration information is held in the gas absorption line shape, which is obtained by scanning the 8
laser wavelength over the specific absorption line. This causes a reduction of the measured signal intensity, which is detected by a photodiode and then used to determine the gas concentration. Being a spectroscopic absorption measurement technique, TDLS effectively counts the number density of molecules that fall within the beam. There are primarily two cross– stack TDLS technologies in use: Direct Absorption Spectroscopy (DAS) and Wavelength Modulated Spectroscopy (WMS). DAS is the first generation technique of TDLS absorption spectroscopy, providing measurements from a relatively crude approximation of the area under the absorption curve generated by the laser scan. WMS is a sophisticated evolution of the DAS technique, which takes a measurement of the second harmonic of the absorption curve. This yields a very sharp absorption curve with all measurement data contained within the laser
scan width, as well defined turning points which are easily computed, allowing an accurate evaluation of the area under the absorption curve. All Servomex TDLS analysers use the greater accuracy and stability given by the WMS measurement. TDLS technology enables a wide range of gas measurements, with the Servomex SERVOTOUGH LaserSP, SERVOTOUGH LaserCompact and new SERVOTOUGH LaserExact able to measure gases including O2, HCl, HF, NH3, CO, CO2, H2O, H2S, HCN, NO, N2O and CH4. This makes them highly attractive and versatile analysers, in particular as an ideal choice for making gas measurements in process and combustion control applications. TDLS does have some limitations. By offering an average path rather than a point measurement, TDLS is less effective at diagnosing individual burner issues than measuring a specific point in a process, such as within a furnace.
– in such a case, zirconia analysers such as the SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact 2700 are more suitable. TDLS is also susceptible to a range of environmental factors which must be compensated for. Finally, the fitting of optical windows between the detectors, source and process requires these windows to remain clean at all times, which requires additional budgeting for a purge gas. Overall the highly stable measurement, low calibration requirements and a fast response measurement in hot, wet, corrosive and dusty process conditions makes TDLS a prime candidate for flue gas analysis and process control – see the SERVOTOUGH Laser range opposite for analysers customised to specific requirements.
