New Yorker Legende ein. Die WERKSTATTGALERIE veranstaltet am Donnerstag, 18. Juni 2015 die erste Berliner Vernissage des berühmten New Yorker Illustratoren Robert W. Richards (anwesend). Richards (* 1936) ist einer der profiliertesten und bekanntesten Illustratoren der USA. Als Intimus
der Kunst- und Musikszene Manhattans zeichnete er für viele Größen des Showbusiness Plattencover und Werbeplakate, die sich als stilbildend erwiesen. Er arbeitete unter anderem für
Frank Sinatra, Cher, Lena Horne, Anita O’Day, Tony Curtis und Peggy Lee. Außerdem illustriert er für die Modebranche. Zu seinen Kunden gehören Marken wie Chanel, Valentino, Yves St. Laurent.
Als Teil des bourgeoisen Flügels der Schwulenbewegung der 1970er Jahre begann seine
jahrzehntelange Liebe zu den "Adonissen“ dieser Szene, den Pornostars. Richards hielt die flüchtige Schönheit jener modernen Liebesgötter in unzähligen Zeichnungen und Interviews fest.
Das Mitglied des "Board of Directors" im renommierten Leslie+Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art zeigt in Vorbereitung auf seine 2016 in Berlin folgende große Einzelausstellung GODS OF EROTICA während des Motz-Straßenfestes eine Auswahl seiner Arbeiten. exhibition of the legendary Robert W. Richards Richards (born in 1941) is one of the most prominent and well-known illustrators of the United States.
The New York multi-talent Robert W. Richards started his career as an illustrator for the fashion world. His striking talents delighted the fashion starts in Paris and Rome. His clients included yves
St. Laurant, Valentino and Gaultier, among others. He Drew portraits of Hollywood stars like Cher
and Tony Curtis, and worked for years with gay publications like The Advocate and Mandate, as well for clients such as Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Anita O’Day, Tony Curtis and Peggy Lee. Richard’s drawing possess a high degree of recognition.
As part of the bourgeois wing of the gay rights movement of the 1970s, he began his decades-
long love for the "Adonis’" of the scene, the porn stars. Richards held the fleeting beauty of those modern cupids firmly in countless drawings and interviews.
Richards, a member of the "board of directors" within the famous Leslie + Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, will show a selection of his work in preparation for his 2016 major solo exhibition GODS OF EROTICA. The program, tickets and all information can be found under:

Meet Robert W. Richards:

When Robert W. Richards enters a room, people notice. Always dapper in his tailored suit and signature round glasses, it’s no surprise to see this innate sense
of style carry over into his iconic fashion illustrations. Robert has been drawing people and clothes for fifty years. At the center of the international fashion scene
during the 60′s and 70′s, he worked alongside Kenneth Paul Block –one of the 20th century’s foremost illustrators — to develop an effortless and flowing
linearity. Many were extremely jealous of his intimate relationship with drawing lines! Robert studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston though he wasn’t a proponent of university, saying he was “too young.” To escape his hometown in Maine, he came to New York and his distinctive visual style quickly became well-known. He has made portraits of several famous people including
Lena Horne, Andy Warhol, Peggy Lee, Cher, Tony Curtis and Dirty Sanchez, and has illustrated high fashion labels including Valentino, Gaultier and Yves St. Laurent.
In the late 70′s and early 80′s Robert became more interested in drawing people than clothes, and he began to create seductive portraits of men. Many of these are
collected in his book of erotic artwork, Allure. In these images, his mastery of line still applies and the rendering of the male form is never short of beautiful.
Today Robert’s images are not without humor, a sense of irony and a twist. He’s amused by the culture of shoe worship, and most recently produced a series of
drawings of men sporting earnest expressions with their hair in curlers or a towering up-do.
Robert has continued making both fashion illustrations and fine art, and in 2009
curated a major show, Fashion Illustration at the Society of Illustrators. It’s the job of the fashion illustrator to bring out the best of a garment as it interacts with the
body wearing it – you must have the eye to chase that line until it’s captured on the page. Robert seems to have a joyous relationship with the humble line and its
infinite variations when altered by motion, a touch of wind or torsion, always making it look so easy!

BRUNO GMÜNDER: STROKE: From Under the Mattress to Out in the Open Man kann die Entstehungsgeschichte schwuler Magazin-Illustrationen bis in die 1940er Jahre
zurückverfolgen. Die Zeichnungen waren oft hocherotisch und suggestiv. Sie dienten zur Bebilderung erotischer Geschichten und erlaubten dem Betrachter, sich selbst in die Szene zu versetzen. Jede neue Generation von Zeichnern ließ sich dabei von der vorangehenden inspirieren.
Da dies jedoch eine Zeit war, in der Schwulsein einem Ausstoß aus der Gesellschaft gleichkam,
wurden diese Magazine unter den Matratzen versteckt. Und das obwohl die Hefte fast überall frei verkäuflich waren.
In Anlehnung an die erfolgreiche Ausstellung Stroke: From Under the Mattress to Out in the Open im Leslie-Lohman Museum for Gay and Lesbian Art erzählt das Buch Stroke die Geschichte von 32 Künstlern von damals bis heute und zeigt ihre Werke.
Für Stroke öffneten private Archive und Museumskeller ihre Türen – und was dabei ans Tageslicht kam, ist bahnbrechend. Was lange als „soft porn“ galt, wird jetzt als wichtiger Bestandteil schwuler (Kunst-)Geschichte wiederentdeckt.

Although they were freely available, their often closeted readers put them under their mattresses. Stroke rediscovers these treasures and puts them together with vividly told
stories and previously unpublished material. The book was composed by Hunter O’Hanian, director of the Leslie-Lohman Museum, and artist legend Robert W. Richards. It features works of
over thirty artists, among other luminaries such as Tom of Finland, Harry Bush, Michael Kirwan, and George Quaintance.
