FRESHERS COULD STILL
PAY TOP-UP FEES
F
reshers starting their university career at the University of Wales, Bangor this September could face paying topup fees from September 2007. A decision has not yet been reached, but the Welsh Assembly Government has passed it over to individual universities, who will be able to charge their students up to £3000 a year. This may well come as a surprise to new students, since Bangor has seen an increase of 6% in students applying this year, as Wales are not introducing top up fees for this academic year. Despite the increase in students at Bangor this year, it appears that very few freshers,
It is estimated that the average student debt for those starting their degrees this year will be £15,000 if any, will find themselves unhoused at the beginning of term. Usually, there are about twenty new students who are given temporary accommodation until a space opens up in halls of residence. This year, less students have applied to halls, meaning this measure shouldn’t be necessary. It is estimated that the average student debt for those starting their degrees this year will be £15,000 – a daunting prospect. This is expected to rise to £33,000 by 2010. Have those in power forgotten that they did not have to pay fees for their university educations and that it is not just the individual who benefits from higher education. Society needs qualified professionals and the prospect of starting your working life in such debt may well put many people off going to university, as the price of a degree continues to rise.
