FOREWORD! ! From%Jeju*si%to%NYC!is!a!project!sprouted!from!a!Fulbright!Korea!Alumni!Fund!(FKAF)! Community!Grant!to!foster!awareness!of!cultural!similarities!and!differences!between!the! United!States!and!the!Republic!of!Korea.! ! This!book!is!the!product!of!one!year!of!work!done!by!students!of!the!2015!“NYC!club”!at! Seogwipo!Girls’!High!School!(SGHS).!Club!members!included!10!firstNyear!students!who!met! on!a!weekly!basis.!At!the!first!meeting,!we!brainstormed!interesting!topics!that!Korean! students!would!need!to!know!about!before!traveling!to!the!U.S.!and!vice!versa!(including! new!Fulbright!teachers).!Each!week!we!would!meet!for!two!hours!and!discuss!both!the! Korean!and!American!culture!and!etiquette!surrounding!a!specific!topic.!While!I!provided!a! broad!overview!of!my!knowledge!and!personal!perspective!from!the!American!point!of!view,! the!students!chose!which!aspects!to!delve!deeper!into!with!their!own!research.!They!also! offered!insightful!comments!comparing!and!contrasting!the!Korean!point!of!view.! ! Jeju!City,!or!Jeju*si!(제주시),!is!the!capitol!city!of!Jeju!Island,!and!while!SGHS!is!situated!in!the! southern!city!of!Seogwipo,!the!only!airport!on!Jeju!is!in!JejuNsi!and!thus!it!serves!as!the! access!point!to!the!world.!Likewise,!New!York!City!(NYC)!was!one!of!the!first!major!access! points!for!immigrants!and!travelers!to!the!United!States.!While!neither!city!is!fully! representative!of!their!respective!countries,!these!are!the!perspectives!that!influenced!the! writing!of!this!guide.! ! SALUTATIONS!&! GESTURES! ! EVERYDAY!LIFE:! ! SALUTATIONS!&!GESTURES! ! KOREA! Informal!Korean!Greetings!by!Sumin! In!Korea,!we!usually!say!anyoung!(안녕)!when!we!meet!in!informal!situations.!We!can!also! use!anyoung!(안녕)!when!we!see!someone!often!or!we!can’t!see!them!for!a!short!time.! When!we!don’t!meet!for!a!long!time,!we!say!ohrenman!(오랜만).!It!means!“long!time!no! see.”!We!use!jalga!(잘가)!often.!It!means!“goodbye”!or!“go!well.”!Last!is!da.eum.eh/bwa! (다음에 봐).!It!means!“see!you!later.”!We!use!it!when!we!say!goodbye.! ! Formal!Korean!Salutations!by!EunBYoung! Korea,!when!we!want!to!be!polite,!we!usually!add!.yo!(요)!to!the!end!of!the!word!such!as! annyeong/hase.yo!(안녕하세요)!!Annyeong!(안녕)!is!very!informal.! ! Korean!Titles!&!Honorifics!by!Seunga! U.S.A.! Formal!American!Salutations!by!Se!Hee! In!America,!when!you!formally!meet!people,!you!shake!hands!with!your!right!hand!with!the! thumb!up!and!a!flat!palm.!If!you!shake!hands!with!a!too!strong!or!weak!grip,!sweaty!hands,! or!hurting!the!other!person!this!is!the!wrong!way.!There!are!also!some!formal!greetings!to!

say!hello!or!goodbye!to!respected!people,!such!as!teachers,!the!president,!and!usually! anyone!who!is!older.!To!say!hello!formally,!Americans!usually!say!“Hello!(name)”,!“Good! morning/afternoon/night,”!or!“It's!nice!to!meet!you!(name).”!When!Americans!say!goodbye! formally,!they!say!“Farewell,”!“Take!care,”!or!“Goodbye!(name).”!Also!use!a!handshake! when!you!say!goodbye.! ! Informal!American!Salutations!by!So!Yeon! When!people!call!someone’s!name!in!the!U.S.A,!they!use!titles.!Titles!are!divided!into!formal! and!informal.!First,!there!are!formal!titles:!“Mr.”!means!both!married!and!unmarried!men.! “Mrs.”!means!a!married!women.!“Miss”!means!an!unmarried!women.!“Ms.”!means!both! married!or!unmarried!women.!These!days!people!usually!use!‘Ms.’!when!they!call!women! because!it!is!convenient!if!they!don’t!know!if!she!is!married!or!unmarried.!“Dr.”!means! doctor.!“Prof.”!means!professor.! ! There!are!Informal!titles!like!bro,!dude,!man,!girl,!guys,!and!so!on.!“Bro,”!“dude,”!and!“man”! are!usually!used!for!boys.!“Guys”!means!boys,!but!is!also!used!for!girls!and!groups!with!girls.! Korean!Money!by!Sumin!&!Ji!Hee! In!Korea,!we!use!the!Korean!Won!(KRW,원,!₩).!We!have!four!kinds!of!cash!and!there!are! many!famous!people!on!Korean!cash!and!coins.! !

! ! First!the!cheapest!is!₩1,000!or!chun/won!(천원).!On!the!front,!we!can!see!Yi!Hawang! “Toegye”!(이황 “퇴계”).!He!was!a!scholar!in!the!Joseon!Period!and!he!made!the!first!lecture! hall!in!Korea.!On!the!back,!is!a!drawing!of!Dosan!Confucian!School!(도산서원),!where!Yi! Hwang!taught.! ! !

! ! Second!is!the!₩5,000!bill!or!oh/chun/won!(오천원).!On!the!₩5,000!is!Yi!I!“Yi!YulBgok”!(이이 “율곡”).!He!was!also!a!Joseon!scholar!and!he!wrote!Questions/and/Answers/at/East/Lake! ! Types!of!High!Schools!by!Jinha!&!Min!Kyoung! In!Korea,!there!is!preschool,!elementary!school,!middle!school,!high!school,!and!university! (college).!Elementary!and!middle!schools!are!the!same!sort!of!school,!but!high!school!is!a! little!different.!Students!need!to!go!to!schools!to!match!with!their!dream!jobs.!There!are! tekkseonghwa/ 득성화! specialized!schools,!teukmok!(특목고)!special!purpose!schools,!and! inmungae!(인문계)!normal!schools.!Specialized!schools!are!for!learning!skills!like!if!I!want!to! be!a!cook,!then!I!can!learn!how!to!cook,!how!to!choose!fresh!ingredients,!how!to!use!a! cooker,!and!how!to!be!in!a!business.!Special!purpose!schools!are!for!geniuses!or!students! with!high!scores.!Normal!school!is!just!for!normal!people!for!who!want!to!study!more.!Going! to!the!school!that!fits!well!is!really!important!for!everyone.! ! Usually,!Korean!kids!enter!kindergarten!when!they!are!3!yearsBold,!and!graduate!at!7.!There! are!3!kinds!of!kindergartens:!Just!the!basic!one,!special!kindergarten!(ex.!English! kindergarten),!and!school!kindergarten!(included!in!public!elementary!school).!After! graduating!kindergarten,!they!enter!elementary!school.!They!enter!elementary!school!at!8! yearsBold!and!graduate!at!13.!It!has!1st–6th!grades.!There!are!public!and!private!schools.! When!they!became!14,!they!enter!middle!school,!and!they!usually!need!to!buy!a!school! uniform.!They!buy!uniforms!at!uniform!shops!named!“Elite”,!“Skoolooks”,!“Ivy!Club,”!etc.!A! school!uniform!usually!costs!about!300,000!KRW.!We!wear!this!because!the!uniform!can! show!that!we!are!students,!and!which!school!we!belong!in.!High!school!students!start!as!1st! graders!again.!They!study!English,!Korean,!history,!social!studies,!mathematics,!P.E,!music,! art,!Japanese!or!Chinese,!Chinese!character,!science,!and!so!on.!They!graduate!middle! school!at!16!yearsBold!and!they!enter!high!school!at!17!and!graduate!at!19!yearsBold.!They! wear!school!uniforms,!and!high!schools’!subjects!are!similar!to!middle!schools’!but!a!bit! harder.!Because!of!the!competitiveness!to!enter!a!good!university,!highBschool!students! study!harder!than!in!middle!school.!They!go!to!school!usually!at!7:30B8:00!a.m.!and!finish!at! 9B11!p.m.!When!they!finish!school,!they!go!to!academy!or!study!room!(독서실),!and!usually!

This!is!the!university!entrance!exam.!This!exam!is!important,!so!the!people!around!high! school!3rd!graders!give!them!some!sweets.!Especially,!they!give!them!a!Korean!traditional! candy!named!Yut.!After!this!test,!they!choose!a!university.!We!need!to!pay!tuition!for!high! school!&!university.!So!we!should!study!hard!to!enter!the!university!we!want!to!go!to!! !

South!Korea,!so!it!is!the!center!of!politics,!economy,!culture,!transportation,!and!education.! It!has!the!biggest!population!with!about!a!quarter!of!the!total!national!population.!In!the! center!of!Seoul,!the!Han!River!flows!and!many!people!come!to!this!place!to!exercise!or!take! a!walk!with!their!pet.!Also!there!is!the!“63!building”!(육삼 빌딩),!which!is!the!5th!tallest! building!in!Seoul.!There!is!an!aquarium,!observatory,!wedding!hall,!and!so!on.!The!night! view!from!the!observatory!is!really!amazing.!I!also!recommend!going!to!Gyungbok!Palace!
