FOREWORD! ! From%Jeju*si%to%NYC!is!a!project!sprouted!from!a!Fulbright!Korea!Alumni!Fund!(FKAF)! Community!Grant!to!foster!awareness!of!cultural!similarities!and!differences!between!the! United!States!and!the!Republic!of!Korea.! ! This!book!is!the!product!of!one!year!of!work!done!by!students!of!the!2015!“NYC!club”!at! Seogwipo!Girls’!High!School!(SGHS).!Club!members!included!10!firstNyear!students!who!met! on!a!weekly!basis.!At!the!first!meeting,!we!brainstormed!interesting!topics!that!Korean! students!would!need!to!know!about!before!traveling!to!the!U.S.!and!vice!versa!(including! new!Fulbright!teachers).!Each!week!we!would!meet!for!two!hours!and!discuss!both!the! Korean!and!American!culture!and!etiquette!surrounding!a!specific!topic.!While!I!provided!a! broad!overview!of!my!knowledge!and!personal!perspective!from!the!American!point!of!view,! the!students!chose!which!aspects!to!delve!deeper!into!with!their!own!research.!They!also! offered!insightful!comments!comparing!and!contrasting!the!Korean!point!of!view.! ! Jeju!City,!or!Jeju*si!(제주시),!is!the!capitol!city!of!Jeju!Island,!and!while!SGHS!is!situated!in!the! southern!city!of!Seogwipo,!the!only!airport!on!Jeju!is!in!JejuNsi!and!thus!it!serves!as!the! access!point!to!the!world.!Likewise,!New!York!City!(NYC)!was!one!of!the!first!major!access! points!for!immigrants!and!travelers!to!the!United!States.!While!neither!city!is!fully! representative!of!their!respective!countries,!these!are!the!perspectives!that!influenced!the! writing!of!this!guide.! ! In!Korea,!we!usually!say!anyoung!(안녕)!when!we!meet!in!informal!situations.!We!can!also! use!anyoung!(안녕)!when!we!see!someone!often!or!we!can’t!see!them!for!a!short!time.! When!we!don’t!meet!for!a!long!time,!we!say!ohrenman!(오랜만).!It!means!“long!time!no! see.”!We!use!jalga!(잘가)!often.!It!means!“goodbye”!or!“go!well.”!Last!is!da.eum.eh/bwa! ! Types!of!High!Schools!by!Jinha!&!Min!Kyoung! In!Korea,!there!is!preschool,!elementary!school,!middle!school,!high!school,!and!university! (college).!Elementary!and!middle!schools!are!the!same!sort!of!school,!but!high!school!is!a! little!different.!Students!need!to!go!to!schools!to!match!with!their!dream!jobs.!There!are! tekkseonghwa/ 득성화! specialized!schools,!teukmok!(특목고)!special!purpose!schools,!and! inmungae!(인문계)!normal!schools.!Specialized!schools!are!for!learning!skills!like!if!I!want!to! be!a!cook,!then!I!can!learn!how!to!cook,!how!to!choose!fresh!ingredients,!how!to!use!a! cooker,!and!how!to!be!in!a!business.!Special!purpose!schools!are!for!geniuses!or!students! with!high!scores.!Normal!school!is!just!for!normal!people!for!who!want!to!study!more.!Going! to!the!school!that!fits!well!is!really!important!for!everyone.! ! South!Korea,!so!it!is!the!center!of!politics,!economy,!culture,!transportation,!and!education.!
