ROAD HARD: Traffic experts create traffic-calming calamities in Aurora and beyond

Driving in Aurora and the nether regions demands steely focus, cunning and foul language. Those are the rules. Navigating anywhere near the Town Center at Aurora mall, especially during rush hour, requires instincts like Kreskin and expert use of the F-bomb. At any moment, you must be prepared to take your Pontiac Vibe from zero to 50 mph in a blink and inject it into the auto chain that never breaks a link on Abilene Street as it approaches East Mississippi Avenue.

While I realize that grueling traffic is just a way of life in Aurora, and the smoggy city downstream from Cherry Creek, I find it much more satisfying to blame the river of idiot drivers, whom I draw like a magnet.

I’m referring to the timid twits too afraid to do half the speed limit on wide, empty roads and make it impossible to get around them. I’m talking about jerks who recklessly slingshot right into your rear-view mirror at 120 mph on I-225, incinerating you with 14 halogen lights, as if they’re from a UFO, and then hang there at anal-probing distance until you relent and give up the fast lane to drive behind a smoking 1991 GEO Prizm with no back window.

In Aurora, you must have hair-trigger reflexes behind the wheel, ready at a split-second’s notice to steer clear of a couch on the highway, a Lexus piloted by something with a lot of hair and a lot of mobile phone, or the inevitable yahoo that pulls lightning fast right in front of you on Parker Road and then proceeds at 13 miles per hour until you nearly black out from breathless cursing.

Oh, the humanity.

But nothing in Aurora has heightened my reflexes as has the growing number of “traffic calming” devices implanted like upside-down asphalt land mines all over the

metroplex.

You’ve seen these things for sure. They look like a failed garage sale in the middle of the street. Or maybe some kind of croquet game for extra-tall third-graders left in the middle of the street.

Road “experts” swear they make Aurora streets safer because you see the visual clutter and slow down, to nearly a crawl, to navigate pylons, partitions and poles, poles, poles.

What actually happens at these places, hilariously sometimes built on hills, is that two cars come to a standoff predicament, slam on the brakes, risking a rear-ending, or the driver closes their eyes and just hopes the thing that looks like a fallen bicycle in the middle of the traffic-calming calamity creation really isn’t.

Likewise, as is always the way in Colorado, rather than create real bike lanes for real bikes, cities across the metroplex have “painted” confusing bike lanes on the right side of the road and into turn lanes, freaking out drivers who care enough to obey the rules, and risking the lives of anyone desperate enough to drive on suburban streets with faux bike lanes.

It’s too much excitement for a twice-daily commuter. Between white-knuckle and clenched jaw drama on every interstate every day as the Drag Race 2024 Weave Team careens around all of us, and the endless swervy derby drivers with their faces in their cell phones, it all seems like an underhanded ploy to get all of us to reconsider RTD, or working from home. Don’t punish Aurora domestic violence victims to settle a political grudge

In what seems like a never-ending obsession with proposing a solution to seek out some Aurora problem, at least two city lawmakers have backed the entire community into a corner with a newly imagined standoff.

A far-right contingent of the Aurora City Council is pressing a plan to nuke Aurora’s nationally acclaimed domestic violence court program for what appears to be a vindictive partisan throw-down.

At risk are the precarious lives of thousands of domestic-violence victims in Aurora, who have for decades depended on a sensitive and highly-trained court system to extricate them from dangerous and tragic lives, and help protect those who return to their abusers in one way or another.

Councilmembers Dustin Zvonek and Danielle Jurinsky are leading a plan to end the ability of Aurora’s municipal court and police to adjudicate domestic violence cases. The reason, they say, is that a recent change in state law would require the city to do what it already does. Sound suspect?

The special court is so admired and important, because it appreciates how domestic violence is so very different than almost any other crime. Often the victim has a change of heart in allowing prosecution of their abusers, out of fear, pragmatism or bad judgment. And the court must sort through all of that. In Colorado, once a crime has been detailed and a suspect identified, a witness-victim is not necessary for prosecution.

But also common in domestic violence cases are crude or ignorant courts that believe they’re acting in the best interest of the victim and community with “get tough” sentences, which often can even further victimize the original victim. Domestic violence “justice” is complicated, especially where children are involved.

Aurora, and Denver, have figured all this out over decades of, literally, trials and errors.

Part of the process, guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, and absolutely key to the American justice system, is the right to an attorney in court, and a right to have qualified counsel provided for those who cannot afford it. Zvonek tried earlier this year to make an end run around that Constitutional provision by trying to find a way to “privatize” the city’s public defender office. The plan failed when no private attorneys offered a plan to make it work. Given that private attorneys make far more than public defenders, the “no thanks” outcome was hardly unexpected.

Separately, state Rep. Mike Weissman, an Aurora Democrat, has for the last few years been pressing for a plan that first would have ended all municipal domestic violence courts, prompted by a concern that some cities gave victim rights advocates and rights of the accused short shrift. This year, that was amended and finally passed, prohibiting municipal domestic violence court programs from privatizing public defense of the accused. Denver backed the bill.

Zvonek is trying to make this a local control issue and an unfunded state mandate case for rejection.

The law simply keeps cities other than Denver and Aurora, which both have large, expert and capable courts, from creating problems with domestic violence adjudication. Places where the new law would have any impact are actually rare in Colorado.

The law has no effect on Aurora’s existing domestic violence program at all. The threat Zvonek and Jurinsky are making is to push the cases into county courts in Brighton and Centennial, where prosecutors there say they have no resources to handle them.

The threat is the very definition of cruel and unusual punishment — for the victims of domestic violence. And the “win” for Zvonek and Jurinsky would be making a partisan political point from the city council dais.

It’s clear that both of these lawmakers are committed and entrenched in their misguided scheme. We would ask the other nine members of the city council to seek out domestic violence victims, their advocates and even the judges who hear these cases to learn for themselves how complicated the issue is, and how Aurora has come to deserve its reputation as a place where these special victims can get almost unattainable justice.

Veep sweepstakes final approach

Former President Donald J. Trump may be tied up a Manhattan court room, but he’s active online.

One of his fund-raising efforts asks supporters to help him choose his vice president. In a mass email, Trump asked “Which person would you select as your next Vice President? Type in the person’s name here.”

Trump will make up his own mind, but the potential candidates list is long, and his choice is important. A significant faction of registered GOP voters dubious about Trump’s candidacy could be swayed toward the former president based on his VP selection.

Even though Nikki Haley abandoned her presidential campaign in early March after losing all but one state in Super Tuesday’s primary races, she’s still managed to clinch 13%-18% of the GOP electorate in the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Haley’s performance causes GOP insiders to question whether her supporters will ultimately back Trump, cross party lines or simply stay home.

Trump’s VP will, if history holds, debate Kamala Harris on September 25 at Lafayette College, a key event that follows the first scheduled presidential debate, September 16 at Texas State University (though neither Biden nor Trump have committed to the debates).

A look back: The first vice presidential debate occurred in 1976 between two seasoned Senators, Kansas’ Bob Dole and Minnesota’s Walter Mondale. The exchanges were lively; Mondale called Ford “a hatchet-man.” Both were veteran politicians, tough and loyal, Dole to the right politically of incumbent President Gerald Ford and Mondale to the left of the challenger, Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter.

Among the names being bandied about for Trump’s VP are three U.S. Senators: Ohio’s J.D. Vance, Florida’s Marco Rubio, and South Carolina’s Tim Scott. Other names into Reps. Byron Scott of Florida and Elise Stefanik of New York, but forget them. If Trump wins, he’ll need every congressional supporting vote he can get, and to remove five certain yeas from Congress on his agenda would be folly.

Another name mentioned is also a highly unlikely choice. Although Trump flew North Dakota Governor and one-time 2024 presidential hopeful Doug Burgum to his Wildwood, New Jersey rally, the moderate is, like the presumptive nominee, an old, white billionaire. North Dakota has three electoral votes, and in 2016 and 2020 Trump won the state by a 2:1 ratio. Trump would gain nothing from an electoral college angle if he added

Burgum to the ticket.

That narrows the prospects down to Tulsi Gabbard who, in many ways, is an ideal VP choice. Gabbard is young, attractive, well-spoken, a former four-term House Democrat, and an Iraq War veteran. In 2022, Gabbard abandoned the Democratic Party because of its shift to the far-left, or as she put it, is “now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue and stoke anti-white racism, undermines Americans’ God-given freedoms, demonizes the police but protects criminals, encourages open borders, weaponizes national security for politics’ sake, and pushes the country ever closer to nuclear war.”

In further explaining her decision to switch to the Independent Party, Gabbard said the Democratic Party no longer believes in a government that is of, by, and for the people. The 2020 presidential hopeful gave the keynote speech in March at Mar-a-Lago to the 1917 Society, a volunteer group dedicated to preserving the Constitution.

On voters’ top concern, immigration, Gabbard’s grade while she was in the House was as bad as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, F-. Gabbard was on the wrong side of every important immigration issue – she voted against stronger border and interior enforcement, and in favor of expanding worker visas that displace employed Americans. Her congressional votes showed that, at the time she cast them, she encouraged amnesty enticements and rewarded illegal aliens. Another irrevocable negative: Gabbard endorsed Bernie Sanders in 2016 and, after she ended her own presidential campaign, Biden in 2020.

Should Gabbard’s dismal congressional immigration voting record and her past presidential endorsements surface in her debate against Harris, the Hawaiian could point to her recent criticism of Biden’s open borders, her support of Israel and, in general, her more traditional values and say she’s evolved politically and socially since becoming an Independent.

Trump promises to name his VP before the GOP national convention in Milwaukee in July. In the end, he may not choose Gabbard, but he absolutely cannot remove any of his congressional allies.

Aurora Mental Health breaks ground on

$38.4

million crisis and acute care center

AEDITOR’S NOTE: This story discusses mental health care and suicide. If you or someone you know is in need of services, contact the Colorado Crisis Center at 844-492-8255 or text “TALK” to 38255. The national suicide hotline number is 988.

wide range of political leaders representing Aurora led a groundbreaking ceremony May 13 for a new mental health facility in the city.

Dozens gathered on a sunny Monday morning as representatives from Aurora Mental Health and elected officials like Rep. Jason Crow, state Sen. Rhonda Fields and other local political leaders symbolically wore white hard hats and shoveled dirt. They celebrated the first step to bringing more mental health care to community members.

Crow spoke about the importance of funding services like this, and how he was able to help get $3 million from the Congressional Appropriations Fund to help finance this project. Other funding sources include Arapahoe County, which committed $5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act to support this project.

The total cost of the project was estimated at $38.4 million last year.

“There isn’t a family or a person in this group here that hasn’t been impacted by the mental health crisis,” Crow said.“Mental health has been one of my top priorities in the last four years…I’m going to continue to funnel money towards mental health and towards public safety as much as I possibly can.”

Fields, who represents Adams and Arapahoe Counties, also spoke about the importance of mental health care.

“I don’t know about you, but I know a lot of people who are dealing with a lot of stuff. I just want to say, it’s OK to ask for help,” she said.

According to data from KFF, in 2021 30% of Colorado adults reported feeling symptoms of anxiety or depression compared to the national average of 32%. Suicide rates in the country have also been increasing since 2011.

In 2021, for every 100,000 Colorado adults, 23 people would commit suicide. This is higher than the national average of 14. The rate of suicide deaths have increased among people of color, younger individuals and people who live in rural areas.

The plot of land for the new facility was purchased

in the mid-2020, according to the press statement from Aurora Mental Health and Recovery. The new Crisis and Acute Care Center will be built on a seven acre property at 1290 S. Potomac Street, adjacent to the Medical Center of Aurora. It is slated to open in late 2025.

Aurora Mental Health’s objective is to create and provide a “one stop access” for mental health care, according to the press statement. The new facility will include a walk-in clinic, crisis stabilization unit and withdrawal management services.

Walmart Marketplace at Havana and Colfax closing in June

Walmart officials said this week they were closing a Marketplace store at 10400 E. Colfax Ave., primarily because of poor financial performance for the store.

“This decision was not made lightly and was reached only after a careful and thoughtful review process,” Kelsey Bohl, director of corporate communications said in a statement May 10. “We have nearly 5,000 stores across the U.S. and unfortunately some do not meet our financial expectations. While our underlying business is strong, this specific store hasn’t performed as well as we hoped.”

Other closures in the region of across the nation were not detailed.

The store is scheduled to close June 7.

“We have been, and will continue to be, supportive of our store leadership and associates at this Aurora store,” Bohl said. “This decision is in no way a reflection of their hard work and customer service. We hope most of the 130 associates at the store will want to continue their career with Walmart by transferring to another nearby store.”

Officials said there are eight other Walmart corporate stores in the region.

Local club chapters hope to raise more than $150,000 during the next year to fund the purchase of the trailer, said Linda Witulski of the Rotary Club of Aurora.

SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION

Crow brings congressional cash for CCA trade and careers building

Colorado Rep. Jason Crow joined educators at Community College of Aurora May 15 in celebrating an $850,000 infusion from Congress to help build a new STEM building.

Crow presented an oversized check to the community college leaders during a brief presentation at the school. The money will go toward funding the college’s latest project — building a new STEM building. Crow secured the money from congressional appropriations. He spoke about the importance of community colleges and their role in career development for new industries. He also mentioned how students will now often change careers and learn new skills rather than stay at the same job for decades.

He said that instead of moving up the “career ladder,” people have a “career mosaic.” And in order for people to pursue other careers, they learn new skills.

“The community college system is going to be essential, absolutely essential to making that happen,” Crow said.

The new Center for STEM, Power Mechanics and Applied Technologies is being built at the commu-

The new building is the community college’s first new building in nearly two decades, and is slated to open in the fall of 2025. The school broke ground for the building in September of 2022.

The center will encompass about 55,000 square feet and will house an upgraded and expanded diesel technology program as well as educational programs in various fields like solar energy and construction. In addition to the congressional contribution, Arapahoe County also allocated $3.5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act to the community college for this project. Tens of thousands of dollars were also raised through the college’s fundraising efforts.

This week, CCA President Mordecai Brownlee said that the college has now raised $16.4 million for the new building.

COPS AND COURTS

An 11-year-old Aurora girl said she was kidnapped and sexually assaulted May 10 while walking to her bus stop in northwest Aurora.

Police have arrested the suspect, a registered sex offender, according to Aurora police reports.

The girl told police that a man later identified as Shukurani Mulenda, 31, approached the her, “grabbed her arm and took her to his apartment nearby.”

Police said he sexually assaulted the girl there.

“She was able to escape the suspect’s home and found a community member to help her call 911,” police said.

Police went to Mulenda’s house on the 1400 block of Macon Street, identified him as the suspect and arrested him.

He remains in Arapahoe County jail in lieu of $100,350 bond, accounting to county records. He faces charges of felony sex assault of a child and evading court warrants.

“At this time, we’re unsure if there are other victims,” police spokesperson Sydney Edwards said in a statement.

Boulder woman tried to steal a pickup, but couldn’t handle the stick shift, police said

A Boulder woman’s attempt to steal a pickup truck — shortly after she was released from jail on a car theft charge — was thwarted not by officers, nor the truck’s owners, but by her inability to drive a stick shift, Boulder Police said.

The woman had been released from jail on May 3 after being accused of stealing a car a day earlier, and walked down the road until she spotted a pickup truck with the keys inside. She then started the pickup, but apparently discovered she couldn’t manage the manual transmission, so she got out and walked away, leaving the truck to roll forward and strike a fire hydrant, police said.

The woman was arrested and now has a May 30 court date on new charges of motor vehicle theft, careless driving, driving without a license and failing to report the crash. The truck was returned to its owner, police said.

Police titled a social media post about the case “Stick Shift FTW,” which is an acronym for “for the win.” — The Associated Press

BY COURTNEY OAKES/AURORA SENTINEL

Oliver Schimberg didn’t swim exactly the race he wanted to in his defense of the Class 5A 100 yard backstroke, but it didn’t matter.

The Grandview junior overcame a challenge from Monarch’s Gavin Keogh in the final stretch and surged to his second straight state title near the end of the 5A boys swimming state meet May 11 at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center.

Schimberg’s performance stood out as part of an outstanding showing across the board for local programs in the season-ending event.

Yi left without a state championship after another close call in the 100 breaststroke. He finished as the runner-up to former Chatfield star Joshua Corn last season as Corn set the Colorado state record. That stood until the finals this season, when Lewis-Palmer’s Eli Hobson, who dropped three seconds between prelims and finals and set the state record of 53.58 seconds.

Junior Ian Noffsinger surged to second place in the Smoky Hill-dominated 500 yard freestyle and Yi added a third place showing in the 200 yard individual medley among highlights for the Buffs.

Bringing home team hardware was Regis Jesuit, which ended up with the runner-up trophy this time as its quest to win a third straight state title — and 25th all-time — ended at the hands of rival Cherry Creek.

Last dip in pool

“I thought I was going to be out a little faster, but I was just really strong on the way home,” Schimberg said. “Just doing it how I practice it.”

Schimberg — who became only the second Grandview swimmer to win a state title last season — posted a personal-best time of 47.49 seconds to finish in front of Keogh.

He had a big meet for coach Dan Berve’s Wolves, as he swam the opening backstroke leg of the 200 medley relay team (which also included seniors Alex Steinmetze and Evan Higgins and junior Ethan Finlay) that was the state runner-up, while he was also second in the 100 butterfly and also swam first on Grandview’s 400 yard freestyle relay to cap the meet.

More individual hardware for Aurora programs went to Smoky Hill — which finished in sixth place — at the end of the meet. Senior Daniel Yi was selected as 5A Swimmer of the Year and Scott Cohen received 5A Coach of the Year honors. The two embraced after the announcement.

“When I heard his name, tears just started fllowing in,” Yi said. “Coming into this meet, I never thought I’d win Colorado Swimmer of the Year. To share this special moment with my coach that I’ve been swimming with since I was 8 years old. I just can’t put it into words, it means so much to me.”

The Bruins won six of the 12 events and piled up 458.5 points, while the Raiders earned 306.5 to finish comfortably in front of the Highlands Ranch co-op team in second place. Regis Jesuit has been either first or second at the 5A state meet for 13 consecutive seasons it has been contested (minus the loss of the 2020 season to COVID-19) and 28 of the past 29 dating back to 1994.

Coach Nick Frasersmith’s team had no individual champions, but got its top performance from junior Reid Magner, who was the runner-up in the 200 yard individual medley and took third in the 500 freestyle after he earned the No. 1 seed in prelims.

Senior Hennig Colsman also made two championship finals, while seniors Sean Greene-Cockriel, AJ Dugan and Owen Mulligan made one apiece, as did junior Hugh Boris. The Raiders also placed fourth in the 200 yard medley and 200 yard freestyle relays and sixth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Cherokee Trail had a two-event championship finalist in junior Bronson Smothers, who led city swimmers in both sprint freestyle events as he was sixth in the 50 and 100. Smothers teamed with seniors Josh Woren and Hugh Mullen and freshman Anderson Hardin on a 200 yard freestyle relay team that placed seventh.

Junior Chad Hamilton scored the only points for Overland with his 18th-place finish in the 1-meter diving competition.

Below: Grandview senior Gabriella Cunningham, left, will take aim at a sweep of the 5A girls 100 and 300 meter hurdles for a second straight season.

With potentially the spring season’s best conditions arriving at the perfect time, Aurora’s boys and girls track stars should be able to shine.

It’s supposed to be clear and warm for the majority of the Class 5A boys and girls state meets May 16-18 at Jefferson County Stadium, which could allow the city’s best to put on a show.

TRACK & FIELD

The Cherokee Trail boys will attempt to repeat as 5A state champions, a feat accomplished by rival Grandview in 2021 and 2022. The Cougars have a full compliment of relays qualified as well as large group of individuals (17),

State-ment time

which is led by junior Peyton Sommers.

Sommers turned heads at the state meet a year ago when he won championships in three of the four races he ran — the open 200 and 400 meters plus the 4x200 meter relay — and took second in his other individual race, the 100. He’s back in the same events this season and could again accrue big points for coach Chris Faust’s team.

Senior Kahari Wilbon combines with Sommers for elite sprint depth, while the Cougars have outstanding relay teams, a slew of distance runners and field event qualifiers to make another run.

The Eaglecrest boys come into the state meet after winning the Centennial League championship, despite winning a single event (from Peach Worah in the long jump). The Raptors have good depth, however, and some outstanding relays with a mix of points scorers in other places. Junior Noah Brown, who has split time between track and baseball this spring, is an emerging sprinter.

The Overland boys have just three individuals qualified, but could get points from all three. Centennial League discus champion Jarrius Ward, 110-meter league winner Zumari Stivers and standout sprinter Wondame Davis Jr. could score significantly.

Rangeview senior Jah Alexander finished as the 5A runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles and is qualified for another crack at the event, while Regis Jesuit, Vista PEAK Prep, Grandview (with just one individual qualifier plus two relays) and Smoky Hill have qualified one or more athletes who can earn points. Grandview’s Gabriella Cunningham starred at last season’s 5A girls meet and is primed to do so again. She is back in the same events she competed in last season — the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, which she won, and the 100 meter dash, in which she was fourth — while she will be a boost to one of the relays. The Wolves have an experienced state group (with strengths in the hurdles, jumps and throws) that is largest in the city in terms of total qualifiers with nine in addition to four strong relays.

Cherokee Trail will put up some points as well, especially in the jumping events with junior Kaeli Powe going into the meet as the top seed in both the long jump and triple jump. Powe was the triple jump runner-up last season and was fourth in the long jump, but has led the state in both events for the majority of the season.

Eaglecrest is the two-time defending girls 5A champion in the 4x200 meter relay and will aim for a three-peat despite the graduation of all but junior standout Jaylynn Wilson from last year’s winner. Freshman Zenobia Witt has been a big addition for the Raptors and she is the only other 5A long jumper other than Powe to break 19 feet this season.

Smoky Hill has four individual qualifiers and three of them are hurdlers in senior Danica Azumah, junior Aniya Sigars and sophomore Kiyah Enoch, while Overland (Lezlee Napier), Rangeview (Maddie Kilmer) and Regis Jesuit (Abigal Frei, the city’s lone pole vault qualifier) have one competitor apiece.

The state meet begins May 16 with a slate that includes the majority of prelims on the track plus finals in some field events, continues with another mix of prelims and finals on May 17 and then concludes with a full championship finals session May 18. ForafulllistofAuroraboysandgirlsqualifiersfor

GIRLS GOLF

City golfers earn state spots in 3A, 4A and 5A

All three girls golf state tournaments May 20-21 will include at least one qualifier from Aurora after regional play May 13-14 at various sites.

The 5A Southern Region tournament May 13 at The Pinery yielded a total of six state berths for local players, four from Regis Jesuit and two from Cherokee Trail. The Raiders finished third — just outside the two automatic team bids — but all four individuals (juniors Audrey Whitmore and Paige Furgason, sophomore Paige Furgason and freshman Molly Amann) made it individually. Whitmore (who tied for second individually) earned a third career state trip, while Paige Furgason will go for a second straight season. State-bound from Cherokee Trail are the freshman duo of Kaylee Saul and Brinnon Cook.

Grandview senior Caroline Ryan earned her fourth career state berth with her eighth-place individual showing at the 5A Western Region tournament May 14 at West Woods G.C. Ryan shot a plus-12 84 to grab an individual state berth. Also headed to state from the same region is Rangeview senior De’Coda High, who shot a 98. High will be her program’s first state qualifier since 2013.

Vista PEAK Prep has a two-time qualifier for the 4A state tournament in sophomore Sophia Capua, who advanced out of the Region 2 tournament May 14 at Foothills G.C. Capua played in one of the lead groups in a loaded regional and finished in third place with an even-par 72.

Gateway’s last state qualifier was Malorie Williamson back in 2012, but the Olys had one this season in senior Maddie Dossey. Dossey came out of the 3A Region 2 tournament with one of its individual berths after she shot 118 at Lone Tree G.C.

Regionals conclude May 15. The 5A girls golf state tournament is at The Broadlands in Broomfield May 20-21, 4A is at The Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs and 3A is at The Olde Course in Loveland.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL Grandview eliminated on final day of state tournament; Raptors, Cougars out earlier

The Grandview boys volleyball team earned a spot in the postseason for the first time this season and survived all the way to the final day of the three-day state tournament that ended May 11 at Overland High School.

The Wolves earned a rousing reverse sweep of the Littleton Public Schools co-op team to win the Centennial League Challenge tournament two weeks earlier, but suffered both of their losses in the double-elimination tournament to the same team. The first loss came in the opening match (by a score of 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 2519, while the last (a 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 sweep) came in a match with a spot in the semifinals on the line.

Eaglecrest — the 2023 state runner-up — bounced back from an opening round loss to win twice in playbacks, until it got stopped by Littleton Public Schools in five sets in an elimi-

nation match May 10. Junior Jackson Shaw had 16 kills, senior Musa Akbar 11 and junior Matthew Dye nine in the loss for the Raptors, who also got 33 assists from sophomore Dillan Ancheta. Previously, Eaglecrest lost in four sets to eventual state runner-up Fountain-Fort Carson in their opener despite 12 kills apiece from Shaw and sophomore Ashton Bond.

Cherokee Trail dropped two matches on the first day of the tournament, falling in four sets to Thornton and then five to Eaglecrest in another match of local rivals. Senior John Clinton racked up 18 kills in the loss to the Raptors, while senior Chase Jensen added 15 and junior Jaeden Barnes 11. All three were also in double-digits in kills in the opener with Jensen setting the pace with 16, while Clinton added 15 and Barnes 10.

GIRLS TENNIS

Local qualifiers fall short of making placing matches at 5A state

Four singles players and five doubles teams combined from Eaglecrest,

Grandview and Regis Jesuit spent varying amounts of time on the courts at Denver’s City Park at the Class 5A girls tennis individual state tournament May 9-11.

None of the locals lasted until the final day — when the top four places were decided — as Regis Jesuit’s trio of sophomore No. 3 singles player Otylia Martino plus the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Lucy Filippini and Brenna Radebaugh and the No. 4 doubles team of senior Elise Holt and sophomore Helen Adams all lost in consolation semifinal matches.

Regis Jesuit had first-round wins from the No. 2 doubles team of juniors Ebba Svard and Cait Carolan, as well as the No. 3 duo of senior Torri Loftus and junior Lily Beebe, but both teams were defeated in quarterfinals and were eliminated when their opponents lost in the semifinals. Junior Rebecca Gelfer and senior Mary Clare Watts at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, lost in their opening round matches.

Eaglecrest sophomore Natali Marshall fell in straight sets to Pine Creek junior Ava Lewis in the opening round of the tournament and did not get a

playback as Lewis — who would rebound to place third — dropped her semifinal to eventual state champion Caroline Daugherty of Valor Christian. Marshall was the Raptors’ first state qualifier since 2016 and its first singles player to make state since 2014.

The Grandview No. 3 doubles team of seniors Maddie Mayer and Quincy Muntean — playing together for a second season — lost to Loftus and Beebe in an all-Aurora opener.

Thirteenth-seeded Grandview hadn’t allowed a goal in two previous playoff seasons and kept third-seeded Ralston Valley off the scoreboard through 30 minutes before Greason struck. The Mustangs got another goal late in the second half to bring the Wolves’ season to an end at 10-6-1.

Grandview made it to the quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over No. 29 Arvada West May 10 at Legacy Stadium. Sophomores Isis Prestwood and Maya Sandler scored goals a few minutes apart late in the first half and goalie Ivy Daniel had to make just two saves.

Gateway falls to No. 2 Northfield in 4A opener

The Gateway girls soccer team — making its first postseason appearance in at least two decades — faced a tough task in a visit to No. 2 Northfield for a Class 4A opening round state playoff game May 8. The Olys (who finished the season 12-3-1) allowed just one goal in the first half before the Nighthawks got going in the second half on their way to a 9-0 win.

BOYS LACROSSE

Regis Jesuit continues, Grandview, CT stopped in 5A lax playoffs

Aurora’s three qualifiers for the Class 5A boys lacrosse playoffs have been cut from three to one, as only Regis Jesuit made it through the second round played May 11.

The seventh-seeded Raiders — who had a bye in the opening round — got four goals from senior Dylan Kummer and three from freshman Austin Ryan to lead the way in a 9-4 defeat of No. 10 Rock Canyon at Lou Kellogg Stadium. The victory moved Regis Jesuit on to the quarterfinals, where it will visit No. 2 Cherry Creek at 6:30 p.m. May 15. The Raiders lost to the Bruins 10-6 in their regular season finale.

Eighth-seeded Grandview came off a first round bye to face ninth-seeded Denver South, which left Stutler

Bowl with a 21-12 victory. The Wolves — who finished with a 9-7 record — beat the Ravens by five goals when they met back on April 19, but Denver South scored at least four goals in every quarter to win the rematch.

Cherokee Trail, the No. 19 seed, made an opening round visit to No. 14 Ralston Valley May 8 and very nearly pulled off an upset. The Cougars fell to the Mustangs 11-10 to finish 4-12.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Regis Jesuit’s 5A playoff run ended on road in quarterfinals

The Regis Jesuit girls lacrosse team’s bid to make a second straight trip to the Class 5A state title game ended May 10 with a 10-4 road loss at Fairview in the quarterfinals.

The No. 6 Raiders matched their season-low in goals with just four against the No. 3 Knights, who got an OT win when they played earlier. Junior Madisyn Jokerst scored three of Regis Jesuit’s goals, while senior Phoebe Rogala had the other.

Regis Jesuit finished 9-7, which included a 17-8 second-round win over No. 11 Chatfield May 8. Rogala scored eight goals, while Jokerst added five in a game the Raiders ran away with after going down 3-0 early.

The eighth-seeded Cougars played top-seeded Mead to within two goals early in the regular season and the final margin was three in the rematch, as the Mavericks escaped with an 11-8 victory to advance to the semifinals.

Cherokee Trail (which finished the season 12-5) got three goals from senior Kyla Bieker and two from junior Lorelei Gearity, who also had two assists. Coming off a bye in the opening round, the Cougars defeated No. 9 Horizon 18-8 May 9 as Gearity had six goals. Kyla Bieker had five goals and three assists and Sophie Bieker scored three times, while goalie Sophia Liley make 10 saves.

Centennial League Challenge concludes

The baseball version of the Centennial League Challenge came to an end May 11 with placing games, which were headlined by Cherokee Trail’s

8-6 road loss at Cherry Creek that decided the league title.

The Cougars scored five runs in the third inning — which included three RBI from Logan Reid and another from Jake Hernandez — but the Bruins scored five straight runs to take the lead and held off a late rally.

Grandview (which had to play all but one of its games on the road because of wind damage to its field) got a monster game from Jax Pfister (who pitched a complete game and homered) in a 3-1 win over Eaglecrest to claim third. Smoky Hill downed Overland to finish in seventh place.

Aurora Central wins

Colorado League crown

The Aurora Central baseball team visited Skyview on May 11 with the Colorado League championship on the line and came away with an 8-7 win.

The Trojans got a strong start from sophomore Alberto Avila — who pitched 6 1/3 innings — and sophomore Kalai Bentosino earned the save. Senior Aron Gardea doubled twice among three hits and collected three RBI, while freshman Michael Avila drove in two runs for the Trojans, who avenged two losses to Skyview (13-4 and 17-7) earlier in the season.

Aurora Central earned the league’s automatic playoff berth with the win.

AURORA LAWMAKERS ADVANCE SHIFTING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COURT CASES DESPITE COUNTY WARNINGS

‘They probably don’t have the resources, but that’s on the counties to figure out’

Aproposal to drop Aurora’s domestic violence caseload on county prosecutors earned early support from conservatives May 9, despite warnings that doing so could delay justice for victims.

Aurora City Councilmember and mayor pro tem Dustin Zvonek has said the proposal to move domestic violence cases out of municipal court and into county court is in response to a state bill that would prohibit cities that handle those cases from signing flat-fee contracts for public defender services.

On May 9, Zvonek primarily described the shift as a way to save money that would otherwise be spent prosecuting, adjudicating and providing public defenders in those cases, while also leaving the door open for exploring the future privatization of the Aurora Public Defender Office.

“The Legislature is trying to hamstring local governments and our ability to control costs,” he told members of the council’s public safety policy committee. “Our city has a ton of priorities that our taxpayers expect us to address.”

While the vast majority of cities in Colorado rely on county courts to prosecute domestic violence, Aurora started handling those cases in its municipal court in the 1980s, as city leaders grew concerned about counties not making them a priority.

According to Zvonek, the city’s domestic violence caseload costs it upward of $3 mil-

lion each year, which he referred to as a “subsidy” in light of where most cities send their cases.

His proposal has so far earned a chilly reception from Arapahoe and Adams counties, who say they lack the resources to handle the volume of domestic violence incidents that end up in Aurora’s municipal court each year — about 1,600 at the time of a 2021 report on the city’s public defense system.

Arapahoe County spokesman Anders Nelson previously said a 2023 analysis indicated 1,588 cases could be added to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office’s caseload annually if municipal prosecutions were to cease, which is three times what it handles currently.

The county estimates the cost of absorbing those cases would be $2.45 million to staff up in the courthouse and prosecutor’s office. That also doesn’t factor in the cost of setting up more courtroom space.

Nelson said that, without additional funding by 2025, the county wouldn’t be able to keep up with those cases while providing other essential services.

When asked whether the county expects fewer perpetrators would be prosecuted as a result, Nelson said cases would more likely stack up and take longer to move through the legal process.

“The timelines would get pushed back, because you can only do as much as you have room for,” he said. “So, I think it’s not necessarily that they

would fall through the cracks, but the timeliness would be impacted.”

The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has said it is continuing to analyze the potential impacts of the proposal but that accepting all domestic violence cases that take place in the northern part of Aurora overlapped by Adams County “would drastically increase our caseload and would require immediate additional resources.”

Karmen Carter — the executive director of Gateway Domestic Violence Services, an Aurora agency that offers aid and shelter to victims of domestic violence — said she, too, was worried about the inability of county courts to pick up the slack if the city halts prosecutions.

“I just think less cases will get heard because there’s less resources at the county level,” she said. “I’m concerned about victims getting lost in this process.”

Carter said she had not been contacted about the proposal prior to the Sentinel contacting her Wednesday, at which point she reached out to Zvonek. The lawmaker said after the May 9 meeting that he is open to working with Gateway and other entities responding to domestic violence.

“If we do it, the way that we roll it out and phase ourselves out is going to be important, and I’m open to bringing all of the stakeholders in,” he said.

Nelson said talks between the city and Arapahoe County are ongoing.

As for whether Zvonek would support the city dropping prosecutions even if other jurisdictions are unable to absorb Aurora’s domestic violence caseload, he said he believed this was unlikely to happen, but that it would ultimately be up to counties to accommodate the city’s decision.

“It’s a question of whether or not they’re going to prioritize prosecuting domestic violence cases, and they do in every other city,” he said.

“They probably don’t have the resources, but that’s on the counties to figure out.”

A state mandate is the impetus

The bill that inspired Zvonek’s proposal — House Bill 241437, whose sponsors include Rep. Mike Weissman and Sen. Rhonda Fields of Aurora — passed the Colorado Senate in the final days of the 2024 legislative session. Gov. Jared Polis has until early June to sign it into law.

Starting July 1, 2025, cities that handle domestic violence in their municipal courts would be barred from paying attorneys to represent indigent clients on the basis of a contract that does not account for the time and effort spent on individual cases.

It’s not Weissman’s first bill

focusing on cities that choose to prosecute domestic violence. Last year, another of Weissman’s bills would have ended the municipal prosecution of domestic violence completely. The bill was amended to continue to allow prosecutions while requiring that cities comply with the notification requirements of the Victim Rights Act.

Zvonek was a member of a council policy committee tasked with taking positions on pending state and federal legislation at the time. He opposed the original version of the 2023 bill along with council members Angela Lawson and Danielle Jurinsky, and he supported the amended version that did not end local prosecutions.

The city’s intergovernmental relations manager, Liz Rogers, wrote in a document presented to committee members at the time that “domestic violence cases filed in a municipal court are precursors to more violent incidents that can include strangulation and death” and that “limiting the prosecution of these crimes puts victims in greater danger.” Rogers also pointed out that keeping cases local spares victims the hardship of traveling to county courthouses in Centennial and Brighton for hearings.

City spokesman Michael Brannen on Thursday said Roger’s statement compiled feedback given by the Aurora Police Department, City Attorney’s Office and Municipal Court.

Zvonek said his concerns about the cost of prosecuting

and defending domestic violence cases have deepened since he took positions on last year’s bill. He brought up how the majority of the caseload of city public defenders consists of domestic violence cases and said he was aware of this fact when he sponsored the RFP last year.

He also expressed doubt that moving prosecutions from one venue to another would harm victims, saying district attorneys are successfully prosecuting domestic violence now and will continue to do so even if the city hands off its current caseload.

“This isn’t some novel idea; this is the way it works,” Zvonek said.

Zvonek’s proposal follows several months of sparring over the future of the office. In October, Zvonek sponsored a request for proposals, or RFP, for private law firms to take over the work of public defense. Law firms were invited to submit bids for two months starting in January, but a March deadline came and went with no bids received.

Throughout the process, Zvonek and other conservatives framed the RFP as the mechanism by which the council would decide whether to continue exploring privatization.

Zvonek said on multiple occasions that the RFP would be the extent of the council and city’s investment of time if no cost savings were identified, commenting in October that if the RFP failed to turn up a lower bid, the effort “wouldn’t move

forward in any way.”

Supporters also dismissed the accusation by defense attorneys and progressives that council conservatives were trying to manufacture a reason to abolish the office in retaliation for former chief public defender Doug Wilson’s public opposition to mandatory minimum jail sentences for various crimes.

Shortly after the end of the RFP, Zvonek said he viewed the outcome as the end of the council’s inquiry into privatization.

Despite these and other statements, in late March, Jurinsky said at a meeting of the same committee that opposed the original version of Weissman’s 2023 bill that the council was “not going to back off” from hiring private attorneys to do the work of public defenders.

She also described the new bill as “an attempt to stop us from trying another RFP or continuing our efforts to get rid of our in-house public defender’s office” in the context of the proposal brought by Zvonek.

Jurinsky later disputed that she had said the council was continuing to explore privatization.

At the May 9 committee meeting, she framed her support for transferring prosecutions in terms of saving taxpayer money on a crime that the vast majority of Colorado cities trust counties to prosecute.

“I don’t really think this is up for conversation,” Jurinsky said. “I support this wholeheartedly. Regardless of where the legislation goes — I don’t care what

happens with the legislation — I think this is exactly what should happen anyways.”

Also during the May 9 meeting, Zvonek presented an item that would eliminate a sunset clause for the mandatory minimum jail sentences applying to motor vehicle theft and failure to appear in court, continuing those policies indefinitely.

Interim police chief Heather Morris cited falling rates of vehicle theft as one reason to continue the tougher sentences, though the trend in Aurora has followed statewide drops in crime.

City spokesman Ryan Luby said Wednesday that the city would not have any data to release about the cost of the mandatory minimum sentencing policies prior to the committee meeting.

No cost information was shared during the meeting, and Zvonek later said he did not know how much money the city has spent defending and prosecuting those cases before and since the sentencing changes took effect.

However, he said he was confident that the cost was less than the personal cost to residents of having their vehicles stolen, mentioning the deterrent effect that conservatives have attributed to mandatory minimums.

When asked why the city would invest in the prosecution of one municipal offense that is also handled by district attorneys while pulling back on the prosecution of another to save

Sentinel Colorado File Photo

money, Zvonek said moving domestic violence out of the municipal court would not change the severity of penalties imposed on offenders.

As for the council’s current level of interest in privatizing the Aurora Public Defender Office, Zvonek said the group is not “actively” exploring privatization but that another reason for the shift would be to preserve the option in light of the pending prohibition on flat-fee contracts.

“If it made sense for us to restart that conversation, to not be able to do it because we’re already paying more than we would necessarily need to prosecute these cases in municipal court … just defies common sense,” he said.

Chief public defender Elizabeth Cadiz said after the meeting that her office is not taking a position on the proposal because its direct effect will be on the prosecution rather than the defense of criminal cases.

Should Weissman’s latest bill be signed into law, Zvonek suggested the council assemble a working group involving the city manager and other officials involved in the municipal criminal justice system to plan how to halt domestic violence prosecutions without disrupting pending cases.

Ending those prosecutions if Polis signs Weissman’s bill and continuing the two mandatory minimum sentencing policies earned the unanimous support of the committee, which

includes Jurinsky and council members Stephanie Hancock and Steve Sundberg. The next step for the items will be a study session or regular council meeting.

The proposal to shift the location of prosecutions was first announced by Jurinsky in March, before she became the victim of an alleged incident of domestic violence herself during the weekend of April 13.

While an affidavit describing the details of the alleged incident remains sealed, the defendant, Derek Cobb, has since been charged in Arapahoe County District Court with second-degree kidnapping, third-degree assault, obstruction of a telecommunication service and criminal mischief.

Jurinsky has since told Denver broadcaster 9News that her statements during the May 6 council meeting — where she demanded the resignations of Morris, Investigations Division chief Mark Hildebrand and officers Tim Meehan, Brian O’Dell and Seth Robertson — were the result of unspecified poor treatment by Aurora police as a victim of domestic violence.

At the committee meeting, she apologized to O’Dell, saying “several of your colleagues have reached out to me in your defense (and said) that you are truly a good officer.” As for the four other cops, Jurinsky doubled down, saying she “cannot wait to see you leave this city.” The next hearing in the case is scheduled to take place May 24.

All the dirt on garden hay beds

IF YOUR SOIL’S NO GOOD OR YOU DON’T HAVE ANY, GROW YOUR GARDEN PLANTS IN STRAW BALES

If you’d like to install a raised bed but don’t have the resources to build one, you can achieve the same effect by growing your plants in straw bales. It’s also a great option for those with poor soil or who don’t have a patch of dirt to call their own.

Typically used as Halloween decorations to display winter squash and pumpkins, straw bales can also be used to grow those vegetables in an economical, low-maintenance way.

Sizes vary, but standard bales measure roughly 14 to 24 inches high, 18 inches wide, and 36 to 42 inches long.

When shopping for bales, avoid hay, which contains seeds and, as we know, is for horses.

Straw is for gardening, and most of its seeds have been harvested, so there shouldn’t be many (or any) remaining in the bale to sprout into weeds. Straw is also less likely than hay to have been treated with pesticides, which would inhibit your plants or prevent their growth altogether. To be sure, ask the retailer if their bales are organic or at least pesticide-free.

PREP WORK

It will take about two weeks to condition your bale, a process that turns it into a moist, fertile garden bed.

Select a location that provides the correct sunlight exposure for the plants you will be growing. You can place the bale on any flat surface — concrete, gravel, wood pallets or even grass (if you don’t mind the grass beneath it dying). But be aware that after the bale is wet, it will be very heavy and difficult to move.

Set the bale with its cut (prickly) end facing up, then begin the conditioning process.

On days 1-3, apply water slowly and evenly until it begins to run out the bottom of the bale. A soaker hose snaked over the top and, ideally, set on a timer would facilitate the process and ensure the straw doesn’t dry out.

On days 4-10, sprinkle the top of the bale with one-third cup of herbicide-free lawn fertilizer that contains at least 20 percent nitrogen (organic gardeners can substitute a 50/50 mix of bone meal and blood meal). Water the bale to dissolve and distribute the fertilizer, but take care not to overwater, which would wash out the nutrients.

Continue to water the bale daily.

As the nitrogen works to decompose and transform the bale into a nutrient-rich environment for plants, the center of the bale will heat up, similar to a compost pile, and then begin to cool. It will be safe to plant seeds or seedlings when the temperature drops below 100 degrees (use a compost thermometer to measure the bale’s internal temperature).

Black ink mushroom growth at the beginning of the process is normal. They will die down on their own. Do not eat them!

PLANTING AND GROWING

Poke holes or cut slits in the top of the bale and plant your seedlings, filling each little hole around them with compost or potting mix. If planting seeds, make holes or slits following the depth recommendation on their packet. Drop larger seeds in, then fill each hole with compost or potting mix. If planting smaller seeds, sprinkle a layer of compost or potting mix over the bale’s surface, sow seeds, then sprinkle more compost or potting mix over them to achieve the recommended depth.

Continue to water daily to ensure the center of the bale and the area around each plant are kept consistently moist. Depending on the weather, more frequent watering may be necessary. Do not let the bale dry out.

Apply fertilizer and amendments throughout the growing season as you would to garden plants.

Although many flowers and vegetables grow well in straw bales, those with shallow roots and heavy tops, like corn, should be avoided.

No Puedo Imaginar Mi

Vida Sin Ti

Curated by current CU Denver undergraduate students Adira Castillo and Josephine Clark, CU Denver’s Experience Gallery is proud to present the opening reception of their latest fine art exhibition, No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti. (I can’t imagine my life without you).

The Chicano philosophy of life is centered around the essence of community, culture, and the deeper connections created through shared experience, allowing for unique perspectives on the value of platonic and community love. No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti highlights the importance of friendship from a Chicano perspective. In the U.S we have been taught to prioritize romantic, idealistic love. However, love comes in many forms beyond the romantic that provides support, care, and healing opportunities in ways romantic love cannot. No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti will draw attention to the crucial work of Chicano artists while help-

ing to educate the public on platonic love, and the ways in which values of strength, tenderness, cultural preservation, and spiritual growth are nurtured through friendship. Visitors to the exhibition will become inspired to connect to community, challenging traditional notions of love, and therefore planting seeds to build resistance to a hyper individualistic, anti-human society.

Diverse in medium and background, this exhibitions Xicanx artists include Oswaldo Cepeda, Cal Duran, Armando Geneyro, Pico del Hierro-Villa, Arlette Lucero, and Cherish Marquez.

The Lehman Trilogy

Winner of the 2022 Tony Award for Best Play. Hailed as “a genuinely epic production” by The New York Times (original New York run), The Lehman Trilogy follows three German-Jewish immigrant brothers, and their descendants, as they navigate fire, flood, war, and panic to build a financial behemoth that changed America. In 1847, the Lehman brothers open a modest clothing shop in Alabama. But they have big dreams. They evolve as new opportunities arise. They capitalize on railroads, oil booms, personal computers, and, eventually, capital itself. They become so intertwined with the U.S. government, and in the daily lives of millions of stakeholders, that some begin to believe that Lehman Brothers, the institution, is too big to fail. This extraordinary feat of storytelling uses only three actors to trace 163 years of family history and business. Until one day, in 2008, when it all comes crashing down
