"Total Detector has been invented, developed and manufactured by a joint team of specialized companies. Clock Technology S.L. is a leading company in RFID solutions and applications and Janus Technologies S.L. is a highly specialized mining consulting firm devoted to R&D in the mining industry. Our factory in Malaga, Spain, provides support, innovation and its own software, with continuous updates suited for the mining industry. This product is supported by Senspain, a global distributor of safety equipment, with a network of agents in the main mining countries."

RFID fundamentals Radio Frequency Identification is a proven technology used in logistics, security and safety fields. It is based on a radio signal that transmits codified information to distances up to 300 meters without need of visual contact. This information can be read though fog, nonmetal walls and objects, dust and some rock corners. Several targets can be monitored at the same time by attaching an id device (tag). It is bi-directional, and events can be recorded in the computer associated to the reader. There are two types of RFID systems: active and passive. Active RFID systems incorporate a battery and can read long distances (hundreds of meters), while passive systems do not have an internal power supply and rely on inductive energy. Closer distance between tags and reader is needed in the latter case for lecture (few meters).

System overview for collision avoidance This system behaves installing a data emitting device (tags) on vehicles or personnel to be protected. A receiver installed on the heavy equipment acts as a virtual radar, that only reads the signals that have been codified as “to be advised to machine operator

Emitting tags can be carried by operators on the vest, hard hat or just on a badge with an id card.

Example of tag setup on personnel Installed on the heavy equipment, a reader of tags is connected to a computer. This reader detects radio signals, then the computer decodes its information, estimates distance based on radio signal strength and displays it on a monitor along with beeping signals. Those beeps depend on two scenarios: notify new entrance on the machinery area or alert of an area of close proximity with imminent risk of accident. The boundary in meters from the equipment between those two areas is programmed according to each piece of equipment.

The display shows the operator what is around in 4 main directions: front, back, left and right. The computer can record events of close proximity and report: who, where, on what equipment, at what time, the incident happened.

Loader setup

Depending on the size of the wheel loader, detecting antennas are installed either on the roof or the areas of the equipment more prone to be a blind spot to the operator. This setup also applies to bulldozers, wheel tractors and graders.

Dumper setup Because big dumpers have completely blind sight on the back, and a blind areas between the front and back axles, antennas are installed in a way to increase signal strength in those areas.

Dumper setup (see white arrows). Depending on the size of the truck, antenna location and number can be modified.

Excavator setup Risk with excavating equipment relies on rapid turn of the excavator, with possible damage by the back or the boom to auxiliary equipment or individuals around.

In large equipment, extra antennas can be located on the sides to increase reading areas.

Custom options (Future Updates) Mechanic detecting antenna: on the bottom of the truck Antenna-camera dual system: only when the antenna detects a tag, the corresponding video camera shows on the operator display. Real time data transmission: interfaces of data can transmit in real time to dispatch systems dangerous events or just actual location of individuals or equipment (privacy regulations may apply in different countries).
