Burning Man Evolves

Compass of the Ephemeral captures essence through photos. Burning Man transformed the landscape of events into an experiment of community and art. Compass of the Ephemeral: Aerial Photography of Black Rock City through the Lens of Will Roger (SMALLWORKSPRESS.COM ) showcases its evolution throughout the years. Nevada artist and Burning Man event cofounder Roger photographs the ever-changing terrain of Black Rock City, Nevada, where Burning Man is held annually. The event began in 1986 in San Francisco as a bonfire ritual at Baker Beach. In 1990, a separate event was planned in Black Rock City while officials in San Francisco banned the bonfire. The following year, the burning of the man was moved to the desert in northwest Nevada as several smaller events. By 1996, the festival opened in Black Rock City. The symbolic ritual burning of a giant wooden effigy culminates the festival celebrating radical expression, self-reliance, and civic responsibility. Roger’s photographs feature a collection of aerial photos as never seen before. Photographic collaboration by Burning Man architect Rod Garrett is also included as a testament of its organic growth. This stunning historical travelogue in words and pictures depicts Black Rock City from generation to generation. –DH
