Sense holidays Summer 2016

Amazing holidays for deafblind people

Welcome to the 2016 Sense holidays brochure Fun. Ambitious. High quality. Our holidays give young people and adults the opportunity to have fun, try new things and meet new people. They also give parents and carers a muchneeded break. This year, we have 24 exciting holidays on offer. Whatever your interests, we have something to suit you.

Here’s why our holidays are special: • Over 40 years’ experience delivering holidays for people with multi-sensory impairments • A personalised approach – each holiday is planned around the needs and interests of holidaymakers • Experienced leaders • Trained and passionate volunteers.

“I enjoyed everything – the place, the people and the fun things to do!” Quote from a holidaymaker

Eligibility

Meeting your needs

Our holidays are primarily for people with dual-sensory impairments. Occasionally, we can offer a place to someone with a single-sensory impairment and additional disability. Our holidays are extremely popular and people with a dual-sensory impairment will have priority. In the adult range, priority will be given to those living at home with their families.

We provide holidays for people with diverse abilities and needs, including:

To apply, please complete our application form and return it to us by Friday 12 February 2016. After this date, any applications we receive will be offered a place on our waiting list. We keep emergency spaces available for short-notice placements. Please get in touch with us if you need an application form.

Sensory impairments Physical and cognitive impairments Complex medical needs Life-limiting conditions Autism Related communication difficulties. We specialise in supporting people with multiple complex needs. There is no age limit and we welcome people of all ages to apply for our holidays. However, if you are over the age of 60, you might prefer to join our Holiday Plus programme (please contact us for more details). We have divided our holidays into four different age ranges: child, young people, young adult and adult. These age ranges are flexible.

We have over 40 years’ experience running holidays for people with deafblindness.

Holidaymakers are supported by trained holiday leaders and volunteers.

Trained leaders and volunteers

Accessibility

Each holiday is managed by one or more experienced leaders. Our leaders have specialist understanding of building personalised group breaks for people with multi-sensory impairments, complex communication, and a range of learning disabilities and physical health issues.

We visit the holiday venues to ensure that they meet the needs of our groups. In this brochure, we have marked the venues as either wheelchair accessible or easy walker. The wheelchair accessible icon means the venue has been adapted for someone who is a wheelchair user. However, the level of access varies from purpose-built accommodation to venues that offer minor adaptations such as wider doorways and ramps. All easy walker venues have at least one downstairs bedroom and may be suitable for occasional wheelchair users.

Every holidaymaker has the chance to build a one-to-one relationship with a trained volunteer. Sense has considerable experience of providing volunteer-led services and creating a safe environment where deafblind holidaymakers and volunteers take a journey together, build relationships, explore new situations and step outside of their comfort zone. Holidaymakers and their parents/carers will receive a detailed assessment and a chance to co-create the holiday experience. This leads to a valuable and enjoyable shared experience for each and every person. On the break itself, holidaymakers will receive a minimum of one-to-one support at all times. Depending on each person’s needs, the level of support may be higher. This will enable them to participate in a range of social and physical activities.

“Holidaymakers will receive a minimum of one-to-one support at all times”

“Our daughter had a lovely holiday which she will remember for a long time. She looks at her scrapbook and giggles at the photos – so it was a fun week!” Quote from a parent
