EUMUNDI Night markets will have a distinctive “doo wop” feel to their Christmas festivities when Sunshine Coast’s Doo Wop Dolls take to the stage from Friday, December 4. The Dolls will be entertaining market goers with their rendition of some classic Christmas carols, paying tribute to the smooth vocal harmonies and rhythm and blues of a bygone era. But it doesn’t stop at the singing. From top to toe they’re channelling the frocks and hairstyles of ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s. Director and lead Doll, Melissa Isles said,

“I love everything about the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s from the fashions and hair styles, through to the music. Especially the music. “I was raised on it as a kid, so I think it’s in my blood,” she said. These sisters of rhythm and swing blend classic rhythm and blues with group harmonies to cover all the great Christmas songsters, from the Ronettes, Doris Day, The Crystals and Brenda Lee to Michael Bublé and Rod Stewart. Join the Dolls for a carols sing-along and some retail therapy under the stars, with art and craft stalls and

delicious fare from all corners of the globe. The Doo Wop Dolls will be on stage from 6.30pm each Friday night in the lead-up to Christmas - December 4, December 11 and December 18. Santa will be arriving on the Eumundi fire truck at 6.30pm each event, and will be joining the Dolls on stage for a little tune. And if you miss them at the markets, they’ll be headlining the two free Christmas Carol events: Once Upon a Christmas Carol -The Pantomime, coming up in Eumundi and Peregian.

Champion Masters swimmer Jan Croft, of Noosa, completes her race.

ON ENTERING the 70s age bracket, most people are slowing down. Not Sunshine Beach’s Jan Croft. Fresh from winning the 70plus division of the 3.8km marathon swim at Mooloolaba’s World Swims Series Swim Queensland event last month in a time of 1:03:23, the 72-year-old swimmer actually has plans to ramp up her training. “Last year I competed in the 70-plus age group at the World Masters Championships in Montreal in the 3km open water swim. “I won’t go to the worlds this year… I’m hoping to hang in there until the 75plus age group for another hit-out,” she said. “I still enjoy the swimming, I have no plans for retiring, as long as the body holds out.

“You just manage the injuries. Anyone who has been swimming that long, it would be impossible not to have any issues.” Jan’s son Nick is head coach of Multisport Consultants, and each week Jan joins his squad for three sessions of between 3.5–4km. Among the faster lanes at squad, she joins athletes less than half her age. “All I do is hang on to the young ones as long as I can,” Jan said. “I enjoy swimming with the young ones. I enjoy their company… it doesn’t matter how old you are.” When training for major events, she lifts the training to four or five weekly pool sessions. Jan regularly does gym work to maintain her strength and supplement her training in between swim coaching at Noosa

Aquatic Centre. Growing up in Ayr, Jan started swimming competitively from the age of six and during the 1950s she held state records for every freestyle distance between 50m–800 metres. In 1961, Jan secured the Australian 800m title in Brisbane, and did it again one year later in Melbourne. Married in her early 20s and then having three sons, Jan got back into swimming and at the FINA Masters championships in 1988, when she won gold in the 800m. She has just completed the Arena Noosa 1000 event as part of the tri festival (where she won her age group with a time of 18:51). Her next major events will include the next World Swims Series events at Noosa in February and Mooloolaba in March.

Goodwill from the Men’s Shed

Handmade toys for local needy children SANTA’S Workshop at Buderim Men’s Shed has been working overtime this year and on Saturday, December 5, they will bring Christmas to local needy children when they give more than 1000 wooden toys, like trains, planes helicopters and semi-trailers, to local charities. “We usually have six or eight toymakers and they work on an assembly line,” vice president Barry Cheales told Seniors. “Most of the materials come from kitchen renovation companies who recycle their off cuts. “Among the charities we’re helping are SunnyKids and Care Outreach. We’ve been doing it for three or four years now and it’s a happy day for everyone.” Like the other 260 members of the Men’s Shed, Barry is hoping this won-

derful day of warmth and goodwill will not be the last for the group. “We’re living on the edge of a cliff,” he said. “We don’t own the building here at 53 Mill Rd. We have a handshake arrangement with the owners, Dr Bill Glasson and his wife, Pro-

fessor Clare Jackson, and they have been wonderful mentors. We are very grateful for their permission to use the premises. “We know, however, that if an investor came along with the money to buy the building, which is a former eye hospital, then we would be out with five minutes’ notice. “We have a block of land at Kuluin but we need $1 million to build a new shed and we haven’t got it.” The demise of the Men’s Shed would be a blow for the district. Many of the members are retired and, according to Barry, “come from all walks of life”. “There are 1100 Sheds in Australia and we are the biggest. “Including the toymakers, we have 22 different activities, including learning how to use computers,

woodworking, wood turning, gardening, book groups, libraries and leatherwork. “We started just over four years ago and it was clear a lot of people didn’t know what ‘all these men’ were doing. It was even said we were a respite centre. “We decided we needed to open our doors and invite people in. That’s how the

annual Opening Day came about. It gives us a chance to show what we do and to sell our wares.” How are the members trying to raise the $1 million to build a new shed at Kuluin? “We have a fundraising committee and it’s very active. We had an arrangement with the previous state government but that fell through. We are, ho-

wever, maintaining links with our politicians for assistance. “We are also associated with a research study by the University of the Sunshine Coast on how Men’s Sheds impact on men’s health. “We are hopeful the outcome will help to put dollar figures on how much Men’s Sheds save (in terms of) the cost of health.”

SUNSHINE Coast University is conducting important research on Men’s Sheds and their impact on men’s health. The study, funded by a grant from the university, started in December last year and results are expected towards the end of this month. Associated with the research are Buderim Men’s Shed members who are hoping the findings will have a vital role in their efforts to find the $1 million they need to fund a new building on land they own at Kuluin. According to Professor John Lowe, head of the university’s school of health and sports sciences, the study is investigating members’ experiences and looking at their wellbeing, social interaction and activities, focusing mainly on health consequences. “Our first step was to develop a survey to find out some data about Men’s Shed participants,” Professor Lowe said. “We started with testimo-

nials and looked at parameters about what to investigate. This gave us some insight on case studies on individuals, spouses or partners and what they were saying about their participation in the movement.” Professor Lowe said the next phase in the research will be to conduct group and individual interviews “to try and put some meat on some of these findings and we’re just about to embark on that aspect of it. “Our ultimate aim will be to work nationally, based on our experience, and develop a survey to see if we can quantify what’s going on with regard to Men’s Sheds and what different parameters there might be to men’s

health. “Results are preliminary but already we’ve found 62% of the men say they joined to meet new friends and we can see it is serving a big purpose in the community in keeping people from being isolated. “We can model that to one of the concerns about the aged is that they can become isolated. We know the lack of interaction increases dementia and the lack of physical activity is now starting to be linked to the possible onset of Alzheimer’s. “Getting men out, therefore, learning new skills and meeting new friends and doing all those things will help to keep men healthy and productive. “If we can find that participating in a Men’s Shed improves the quality of life or health, then we have some good models and indices to say we can save the community and Medicare etc X amount of dollars of taxpayers’ money. That’s what we are investigating.”

A RECENT survey by the Music Council of Australia has found there are more than 1000 community choirs in Australia and “in all likelihood there may well be several thousand”. So what are the odds of two former members of the same choir in Sydney, Joan Murray and Carol Monks, discovering each other by chance on the Sunshine Coast? Fairly remote, you say? Well, you’d be on the money. Soprano Joan is a founding member of Noosa Chorale, joining in 1994. Before coming to Noosa two years earlier, she was a member of Manly Warringah Choral Society for 12 years, performing in shows like The Merry Widow, The Sound of Music and sharing the stage with Carol in Turandot at the Hills Centre in Castle Hill. Carol became a chorister with the Manly choir in 1984 and in the same year also joined the Sydney Beethoven Society. “While I was with the socie-

Coast musician brings disability awareness Barry Charles lends his talent to support 121 Care group By JIM FAGAN

SUNSHINE Coast singersongwriter Barry Charles has been rocking and entertaining audiences on the Sunshine Coast since 1973. Apart from a few years when he played the international scene, his big voice and his mix of blues and jazz has been heard from Mooloolaba to Maleny and points north and south. Barry (67) contracted polio in his left leg when he was 15 months old (these days he walks with the aid of two sticks) and says it restricts him from quite a few things. “But I’m not in a wheelchair. My work is music and I can sit down and play and sing.” This year he has been lend-

of thing. They support those with long-term injuries such as cerebral palsy or acquired brain injury and there are programs for clients who want to have control over their own care. “Seventy per cent of the

committee have disabilities themselves and their aim is to make the lives of people who are also disabled a lot easier and more rewarding.” Right now, Barry’s entertainment calendar is

packed with bookings, including a trip to New Zealand, but one gig he is looking forward to next year is a music festival in Noosa to raise funds so people with disabilities can go sailing on Noosa River.

A great voice was in his family DNA

BARRY Charles was just 25 when he came to the Sunshine Coast, at first living in a tent in the woods at the end of Hastings St and then at Lake Weyba. “My bass player in Melbourne told me a lot about Noosa and going there for me was a ‘voyage of discovery’.” He says having polio hasn’t affected his singing capacity. I come from a background of singers. My father was a singer and my grandfather was an operatic bass baritone. He sang with Dame Nellie Melba for a season in 1927. “My father and uncles had long careers with Collingwood, a huge club in Melbourne. “My family has been very big in the AFL football scene for 100 years but when I got polio it was obvious I wasn’t going to play football, although I did play at school. “Even when I was wearing callipers I still wanted to play until I accidentally hit someone on the head one day with one of those big metal things on my boot. “I was sent home with a note saying, ‘Barry should be made an umpire or a scorer’ and that was the end of my football career.” Barry says it also “pushed me into music”. “I was taught to sing from the age of eight. I was a boy soprano and The date isn’t set yet but it’s timed for late March/ April and is being spearheaded by 121 Care. He is thrilled he will be sharing the stage with entertainers with disabilities like star rapper MC Wheels and singer and guitar player

won a couple of eisteddfods. As I grew older I did instrumentals and sung with a rock’n’roll band.” His astonishing vocal range and what he calls his “radical and different” singing style connects with audiences. “In the late ‘90s I went to see my sister who lives in New York. I performed there then went to Jamaica and sang with some really big names. “I lived in England for nearly five years recording and also doing solos in Holland, Spain and Portugal. “I was starting to make headway as a performer when my wife Diana got pneumonia. “Doctors said she would die if we stayed in the UK and in 2002 we came home and started all over again. Troy Stegert. “It’s their opportunity to make people aware of their talents and capacities. “Their strength is what they’ve been through,” Barry said.

The Best Christmas Gift Ever

“Usually for Christmas, my children buy me towels or pillows and once even a basket for the cat. Last year, after a wonderful Christmas lunch in the park with my family, we came home and I found that for a Christmas gift my son had organised the replacement of my old toilet seat with an electronic Bidet toilet seat. I had seen them advertised on TV and thought what a great idea. I was absolutely shocked and thrilled to find I now have one on my toilet.”

After two weeks of having my new Bidet, I wondered how I had ever survived previously without it. All I have to do is sit down on my nice warm seat and go to the loo, and once I am finished I simply press a button and I get a warm water wash and a gentle stream of warm air dry. Meet fabulous Sunshine Coasters

The interview: Introducing a new series in which we feature the interesting, offbeat and innovative lives of our Coast neighbours JIM FAGAN

IN 2003, Landsborough journalist Rhonda Hetzel came to a life changing realisation that if she kept doing what she was doing she would “get sick”. A technical writer, specia-

lising in manuals for mining companies like Shell and BHP, she had just finished an 18-month contract for BHP which involved what seemed to be endless travel back and forth to the mining town of Glenden, inland from Mackay.

She was burnt out and unhappy, so she made a decision to close her business and live a more simple life with her husband, Hanno, and two sons on their Landsborough property. Rhonda, 67, said: “I didn’t have an income any more,

so I had to reduce my cost of living. One of the boys had just started uni and the other an apprenticeship and they were eating me out of house and home. “I used to be a bit of a hippie with my own vegetable garden and chickens, so I thought I would do that. “We enlarged the veggie gardens, built a chicken coop, put in solar panels, a bigger water tank – all the things to make us more self-reliant. “I had to teach myself to bottle jam, bake bread, and preserve our own fruit.” Her new lifestyle was giving her an independence and a freedom she had only imagined, so she decided to share her experiences and knowledge by writing down her thoughts in a regular blog on the internet, called Down to Earth. Her blogs quickly became popular – to date she has had close to 9 million visitors and she has “followers coming out of my ears” – with the result of Penguin Books emailing to ask,

Rhonda Hetzel shares tips on living the good life.

“We love your blogs. Would you write a book?” Down to Earth was published in March 2012, and its message of simple living has made it a best seller in Australia and New Zealand, with 20,000 copies sold. It is now being reprinted and Penguin are negotiating world-wide sales. Rhonda’s second book came out a year later. “Penguin brought out a special called A Simple Life, which was a condensed version of Down to Earth that you could pick

up at an airport or a railway station, and since then I’ve been working on my third, which will be published in March next year. “This one is called A Simple Home and is a continuation of Down to Earth because there wasn’t enough room to say everything I wanted. “It’s a book about how to do things like mending, darning, making dairy foods like butter, yoghurt and cheese, recipes for home cooking and lots more.”

CHRISTMAS CREATION: FESTIVE GINGER CORDIAL On Christmas Day, Rhonda’s backyard produce will be very much part of her festive lunch preparation. Her own eggs, lettuces, tomatoes, herbs, raspberries and passionfruit for the pavlova will shape the menu, plus home-made ginger beer, cordial and a fruit punch. She will, however, be “splurging” on a baked ham and organic chickens. “A family time is an important get-together and I want to provide fabulous food,” Rhonda said. Here is Rhonda’s recipe for ginger cordial.

GINGER CORDIAL ■ 1 piece fresh ginger about 8cm ■ 1½ litres tap water ■ 1 cup sugar ■ Rind, one lemon Peel and grate the ginger. Grating is better than slicing because the greater surface area you have, the better the flavour. Place the grated ginger, water, sugar and lemon rind in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Stir to make sure all the sugar dissolves. Turn off the heat, put the lid on the saucepan and leave on the stove top overnight.

The next morning, strain the ginger liquid through a muslin cloth over a strainer sitting in a jug. Pour the ginger cordial into clean bottles and store it in the fridge. To make up a drink, pour a small amount (40ml) of ginger cordial into a glass and fill the glass with cold natural mineral water or soda water. We’re using Aldi mineral water, which is 79 cents per 1.25 litre bottle. You can also drink it using cold tap water or as an addition to your hot black tea.

Christine Perkins

■ 1 cup brandy (or ½ cup of brandy and ½ a cup of your choice of alcohol – can be port, Vanilla Galliano or whiskey, it’s your choice) ■ Custard and ice cream/ cream, to serve Method 1. Place mixed fruit, raisins, zest, lemon juice and brandy in a large bowl. Cover and stand overnight. 2. Grease a six-cup metal pudding steamer. Line base with a circle of baking paper. 3. Using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in fruit mixture and chopped nuts. Sift together flour, cinnamon, ground ginger and baking soda. Add to batter with almond meal and gluten-free bread-

crumbs. Mix to combine. 4. Fill prepared pudding basin. Place a large circle of baking paper and large circle of aluminium foil over the top of the batter, then secure the paper and foil with string. Place basin in a large saucepan on a trivet inside the saucepan and fill two-thirds with boiling water. Steam on medium heat, covered, for four hours, adding more boiling water as needed. Remove from water, cool and refrigerate until ready to serve. 5. To serve, steam pudding using the same method for two hours. Alternatively, turn the pudding out onto a plate, cover with plastic wrap and microwave on high (100% power) for four to five minutes. Serve with custard. Guide to measurements All recipes were tested using 59g eggs, unless otherwise stated. Australian standard measures are used in all recipes, including standard cup, tablespoon and teaspoon measures. One cup = 250ml, one tablespoon = 20ml, one teaspoon = 5ml. Preparation and cooking times may vary. Some recipes may take you more or less time than we suggest.

Laguna Estate - a lifestyle choice

Is ‘grandma’s ghetto’ your idea of a retirement village? If so, stop right there! There is nothing further from the truth. In the past, most residents entered these villages aged in their seventies as part of a move to downsize, decrease maintenance responsibilities, experience a greater sense of safety and security, or for health and lifestyle reasons. Today, younger retirees from age 55 are seeing the benefits of relocating to a retirement village, with the emphasis on lifestyle and making the move a liberating experience. To those who say that they are not ready for such a move, many of the residents at Laguna Estate say that they wish they had made the decision earlier. It has given them the freedom to travel, visit family or just pursue new hobbies without any of the worries they previously had with the upkeep and security issues of their previous home. Combining outstanding resort facilities with stylish homes in a fully landscaped environment, this village strikes the perfect balance between privacy and independence whilst encouraging a vibrant and rewarding community in which to live. There are spacious villas and serviced apartments from which

to choose, all in a quiet, peaceful location yet so close to all the vibrant action of Noosa. The range of facilities is cleverly geared towards anyone over the age of 55, whether you are physically active or prefer a quieter lifestyle - and the grandchildren are welcome here. so what will sell you on your decision to make Laguna Estate your home? It is a combination of many things – particularly the smart community facilities and the activities which cater for all lifestyles, but also the quality finish of both the new and the refurbished villas, the resortstyle feel, the professional and hugely cheerful staff and the low monthly fees. At some time in the future you may need living assistance but this too is catered for at Laguna Estate with assisted care apartments available. Three meals a day, cleaning, weekly towel & linen changes and 24 hour on-call emergency staff are all part of the service. Laguna Estate is a class act – phone 1800 012 049 for lots more information and an appointment to view this special retirement estate at 21 Lake Weyba Drive, Noosaville. PEER educators have been asked to join COTA Queensland to inform seniors. “Volunteering as a peer educator for the past six years with COTA Qld has been a wonderful and worthwhile experience for me,” Hervey Bay resident, Alison Taylor said. “I have been trained in three different programs now, each relating to important issues for older Australians.” COTA (Council on the Ageing) Qld is a statebased organisation committed to advancing the rights, needs and interests of people as they age. They work to create a more just, equitable and caring community, in which older people are actively involved and have access to appropriate support, services and care. “The opportunity to deliver a message of hope and educate my peers to access help when required offers me a great deal of satisfaction, as well as sense of worth to be actively in-

Taskforce appointed on needs of seniors

Panel to identify housing options for older citizens A TASKFORCE of industry experts has been appointed by the Palaszczuk Government to identify affordable and independent housing options for ageing Queenslanders. Seniors Minister Coralee O’Rourke announced the appointment of the Advisory Taskforce on Residential Transition for Ageing Queenslanders in Parliament at the end of November, delivering on a key election commitment to support Queensland seniors to retain their independence. “We understand that seniors can be faced with barriers such as cost of living, equality and independence when it comes to housing options as they get older,” Mrs O’Rourke said. “The primary focus of the taskforce will consider the needs of older people and will aim to improve choice, affordability, fairness and independence, while reducing complexity in their transition to aged care. “The taskforce will consider and advise the State Government on options for the supply of housing, supports and other initiatives that will improve choices for Queensland seniors.” Minister O’Rourke said the 11 representatives on the taskforce included industry-leading property and finance experts

and high-profile leaders from the seniors sector, government and academics. The taskforce is led by independent chair Professor Laurie Buys from QUT, a social science researcher focussing on active ageing. Housing and Public Works Minister Leeanne Enoch said the taskforce’s work would build on what the government was already putting in place regarding Queenslanders’ transition to retirement. “We are currently reviewing laws overseeing retirement villages and residential park homes and working on guidelines for liveable and visitable housing,” Ms Enoch said. “The taskforce will carefully look at our seniors and what our aging population will need.” The number of Queenslanders aged 65 and over is expected to increase from 429,000 to 1 .4 million in the 25 years to 2036. Ms Enoch said the latest Census data indicated that 77 per cent of Queenslanders aged 65 and over lived in their own homes, while about 10% rented privately, and about 9% lived in retirement villages and residential park homes. The taskforce will report with advice and recommendations to the Palaszczuk Government by August 31, 2016.

Message from the Minister

Coralee O’Rourke.

A KEY commitment for the Palaszczuk Government was to establish an Advisory Taskforce on the Residential Transition for Ageing Queenslanders, and in October, I was pleased to announce this taskforce had been appointed. The primary focus of the taskforce will be to consider the needs of older people and will aim to improve choice, affordability, fairness and independence, while reducing complexity in your

transition to aged care. This includes selling the family home, transitioning to retirement villages and remaining close to loved ones. We understand that this issue is important, especially around Christmas time, and I look forward to giving you an update on their findings in the future. Christmas is an exciting time, but it can also be very stressful for Queenslanders who are stretching their budgets to enjoy some of the holiday cheer. The expense of buying gifts, preparing for Christmas lunch and organising festivities can add up quickly As a Government, we understand the impact that cost of living pressures can have on older Queenslanders. Which is why this Christmas, we are encouraging seniors to take full advantage of the savings on offer through the Seniors Business Discount Scheme. The scheme is available to

Queensland Seniors aged 60 and over, and offers discounts at more than 6200 participating businesses. Savings can be nabbed from goods and services to accommodation and holiday attractions. Some discounts are even extended

Opinion MR BRITTENDEN seeks the advancement of Australian Eastern Standard Time by 30 minutes on a permanent basis and the abandonment of DST on the east coast of Australia. He said it was a question that has never been asked before and the Queensland State Attorney-General has challenged him to collect a meaningful reaction from the people of Queensland. Please send your comments to: Editor@seniorsnews paper.com.au. “DID you know there is a sector of the eastern seaboard between Rockhampton in the north and Wollongong in the south which has never been part of any standard time zone in Australia since universal time zones were adopted by our forefathers in 1892? Between 10–11 million people (43% of our population) presently live in this sector. In an attempt to correct

DAYLIGHT SAVING PERSPECTIVE this anomaly, a rather illconceived and confusing practice was introduced into the national landscape in October 1971 – the concept became known as Summer Time in state legislation. It has continued in some eastern states and the ACT ever since. Clocks were adjusted by 60 minutes (an over-kill by 30 minutes) every six months or so. The practice was also known as daylight saving time (DST) – defined in an article by Mike Corones [Reuters, November 26, 2014] as “the greatest continuing fraud ever perpetuated on the American people”. It is not unreasonable to refer to DST in Australia in the same terms. Geographic factors mean that not all eastern states can justifiably advance

Tasmania amend their respective legislation so that standard time in each of those legislatures is 10.5 hours in advance of GMT/ UTC. Summer Time/ DST on the eastern seaboard becomes a thing of the past. Australia reverts to three time zones on a permanent basis. The benefits to the national economy would be considerable. All clocks on the eastern seaboard would be synchronised year-round – a much better way of carrying on business between the major states – which encompasses 80% of the nation’s population. The six-monthly adjusting of clocks would cease. To implement this proposal the following needs to be done: the premiers and the chief minister on the to adjust to sharp increases in these areas,” he said. “As part of a complete package, everything should be on that table. For example, stamp duties might be a bonanza for state governments but

eastern seaboard need to agree that these changes would benefit the state and national economies. Relevant legislation in the eastern states and the ACT needs to be amended. I have asked my federal members to convince our PM that he should prevail upon the relevant state leaders to agree to have their legislation amended as soon as possible, either directly, or via a COAG resolution. The necessary legislation would then be in place so that, at 2am on Sunday, October 2, 2016, or prior if thought appropriate, all clocks in Queensland, NSW, the ACT, Victoria and Tasmania would be advanced by 30 minutes and never changed again. I have been researching this matter over the last four years. I have addressed numerous governing bodies. It’s about time we fixed our clocks forever. Graeme Brittenden they’re a huge disincentive for older people who want to downsize. “Let’s consider where everything fits and interacts, and do away with the waste and inefficiencies,” he said.

Opinion: email us at Editor@seniorsnewspaper.com.au Local Council Rates Subsidy ARE you aware that whether or not you can take your local council rates subsidy with you into a retirement village depends entirely on which council area your retirement village is located? Michael Fairbairn explains: “IN 2005 a private member’s bill was introduced to the Queensland Parliament (Local Government (Approved Pensioners

Rate Subsidy) Amendment Bill 2005). This Bill was designed to eliminate the discriminatory application of the subsidy by denying the subsidy to retirees who had previously been able to claim the subsidy, losing it when they relocated to a retirement village. The Bill was defeated 23–50 (see Hansard for August 19, 2005, pages 2319– 2325). By reading the pages of Hansard the reader can form their own opinion on the reasons for it’s not hav-

THIS WEEK’S LETTER Custom home builders I WAS very interested to read the letter to editor, from S Heath of Caboolture. We are a custom home builder and can build any size new home, addition or renovation. I think people have the misconception about builders because of the bigger companies that build a number of houses the same and they do not have any flexibility.

We can design and build to what our client needs and to the land and council requirements. We find that in Queensland people are not aware of what a custom home builder can do and they tend to go to the large building companies. Custom home builders offer a great service and are more flexible to people’s needs and budget. Jeremy McGowan Builder / Director

PERSPECTIVE Have you lost your rates subsidy after moving into a retirement village? ing passed and might care to reflect on the degree of concern that some members of parliament had for the section of the community that this association represents.

Many members of Queensland parliament who voted on the Bill are still serving members of Parliament. All are listed on page 2325 of Hansard for July 19. By reading this page you

can establish which way your local MP voted and form a judgement on how much value your member of parliament places on you. If you live in Brisbane, Bundaberg, Cairns, the Gold Coast, Ipswich or the Lockyer Valley, among others, you can continue to claim this subsidy as those councils have chosen to permit the transfer of the subsidy. At the time of writing, we were researching which other councils permit the transfer of this subsidy.

We have written to the Premier and several still serving MPs who voted for the bill asking that its intended outcome be revisited. If you find that your council doesn’t not allow you this transfer you might want to contact you mayor, local MP and/ or the Premier and express an opinion on how the State Government and local councils are treating their retired citizens? – Michael Fairbairn, Vice president, Assoc of Residents of Qld Retirement Villages

Many people I have spoken to naively believe they will only be required to pay a 5% increase on the existing 10%. They fail to understand GST tax could go up by a whopping 50% if it is approved. However with a 50% increase and a broader base GST this will bring a lot of people to their knees as they struggle to maintain their homes and pay for goods and services. If federal and state governments advocate for senior citizens to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, I doubt any pro-

tection measure for low income earners currently proposed would offset a 50% increase in daily goods and services required to run a household, plus inflation in the years to come. I urge seniors to communicate with each other and write to their local member and to federal members of parliament expressing “no increase to GST”. – Brian Fox Hamilton ■ Brian, see the article on p.14 for more info on senior advocacy. Views on this page are also read by politicians. – Gail Forrer, Editor.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Speaking out IT’S time for seniors to speak out and get serious about the proposed 50% increase in the GST! I was told many years ago, “Where their is smoke there is fire”, and when politicians start talking about only a 5% increase in the GST it’s time for seniors, pensioners and small income earners to unite with a resounding answer, “No”. You see a 5% increase is in fact a 50% GST increase from 10% to 15%. In 2000, GST commenced

I urge seniors to communicate with each and write to their local member. at 10% and without us realising it inflation in the years between 2000–15 increased our contribution by over 40%. God help us in, say, five years if we get clobbered with a 15% GST, which we are told is “on the table”.

Until someone does notice – and you can bet it will be a young whippersnipper just out of university who suddenly looks my way with rolling-eyes and whispers “who is that old sheila sitting in the corner?” – I’ll keep on working. Working as long as you are able to and your employer lets you has to be good for you, no? A company can’t fire me now for being past a certain age – at least not in this country – and this is a very good thing. But the older working person needs to keep up, because it is a certainty

I’m pretty certain I’ve fooled everyone. she will be working with youthful lithe things and she doesn’t want to appear “elderly”. Even if she is groomed and cosmetically enhanced, even though she may be young at heart and of mind, there are still things the older worker needs to be aware of to

keep up appearances, especially if her job entails sitting in front of a computer as so many jobs do now. It is the act of getting up off a chair after a sitting period of two or more hours. Every time I rise from the chair I have to suppress a series of unbecoming grunts. Then, the actual walking from the chair to the kitchen or a colleague’s desk — trying to pretend the thighs aren’t cramped, the calves are not seized and the feet are most unhappy about being placed on the ground — takes a fair bit of fakery. “I’m just off to the kitchen to make coffee,” you must say loudly to cover the bendy-knee groan. If you don’t care about work colleagues hearing your unflattering chairascending groans or noticing your shuffle once out of the chair and on your way to the coffee, then congratulations to you. But I do mind, and I’ve been covering up for a few years now. I’m pretty certain I’ve fooled everyone. ann.rickard@scnews.com.au

YOU may have heard those old adages, “When the body becomes stiff and inflexible, so does the mind” and “You are as young as your spine”. The regular practice of yoga helps create a flexible body and mind, and assist us in keeping old age at bay, maintaining optimum health and removing stiffness and inertia in the body. Maintaining a healthy and flexible spine is a key aspect of yoga. The spine is designed to move in many directions, so twists and backward and forward bends are all incorporated into a wellrounded yoga practice. Our body’s nervous system has a direct relationship with the spine, so a healthy spine leads to a healthy nervous system, which supports a healthy

"Inspiring and retiring” with Eva Bennett

HOW often do we make assumptions about what others may be thinking or doing, then find out later that the situation wasn’t what we thought it was, which can lead to unnecessary conflict and stress. home, gardening and getting involved in his local community. His wife, who had spent a lot of time at home, was looking forward to OS trips when he retired. One day discussing financial matters, the husband mentioned he was looking forward to no more travel when he retired, which caused a heated argument. Each had assumed that the other person wanted the same thing they did, so had never really discussed it. So how could this argument have been avoided? By good, clear communication and asking questions of each other, listening to each other about their thoughts about what to do in retirement. . Here is an exercise you can do to develop the habit of having clear communica-

tion and reducing the conflict that assumptions can create. Each person writes down how they want a particular situation to be, eg. what to do in retirement, how to spend Christmas. When you have each completed your list, listen carefully to each other’s “wants” and ask questions to get clear on what is being said. Do you have a better understanding of the situation? Can you and the other person resolve any issues in a peaceful way?

I’d be happy to get some feedback from you, when you try this approach. Remember – ask rather than make assumptions. STEM CELL TECHNOLOGY Humans believe that ageing is inevitable – at GEN-X we disagree. NO DOUBT YOU’VE HEARD of stem cells but don’t know much about them. The rigorous debate surrounding stem cells has much to do with their proven restorative qualities evidenced in thousands of medical success stories globally. But what are they exactly? Put simply, stem cells are our body’s built-in repair system helping us to heal from injury and illness. We have about 200 different kinds of cells in our bodies that are organ specific, but stem cells are different. They’re able to change into other types of cells helping a range of organs and tissues to recover from trauma. This means that when our bone marrow releases stem cells they automatically target the damaged areas, in turn releasing growth factors to repair the tissue. For this reason stem cells are considered to be highly regenerative. In fact our own adult stem cells are the core essence to life and good health, and provide the platform for many cumulative health benefits. Did you know that from about the age of 26-27 years old the body gradually stops producing stem cells? Our body’s reserves gradually decrease, and our reduced ability to efficiently repair damaged tissue leads to aging. It’s not surprising then that medical

Stem cells are our body’s built-in repair system helping us to heal from injury and illness science today uses stem cells to enhance our general well-being with broad and proven benefits. In fact, GEN-X treatment programs are designed specifically to combat the challenges faced by reduced energy and endurance, compromised immune systems, fatigue and focus issues, poor post exercise recovery, post operative recovery, illness and injury as well as natural weight loss, muscle gain and overall health maintenance. Scientific research shows stem cell release rates from the bone marrow drops at an astonishing rate as we age. By the time we’re 65 years old, the release rate has dropped by more than 80% leaving only 20% of active stem cells circulating in the bloodstream. The good news is it’s never too late to start reversing these statistics. It’s now possible to activate our own adult stem cells with a revolutionary stem cell programme. GenX’s cutting-edge treatment programs designed by a

team of bio-chemists, scientists and health experts, provide advanced immune response, cellular repair and renewal. With a working knowledge of the unique, regenerative quality of stem cells, and with access to highly sophisticated technology, doctors today can also offer life-changing relief to patients suffering from a vast range of conditions and diseases. Using methods that stimulate adult stem cells from the bone marrow, muscle and tissue into the bloodstream, stem cells migrate to areas where they are most needed. This vital, life-sustaining process helps improve, maintain and preserve health and well-being throughout an entire lifetime. If you’d like to know and understand the benefits of stem cell treatments for your health, and improve your quality of life, give us a call today. Places are limited. At GEN-X, it is our opinion that growing older is simply a side effect of slow movements in medical science.

INCONTINENCE is a topic rarely spoken about but surprisingly common in our community. In fact, over 4.8 million Australians have bladder or bowel incontinence (or both), and because of the embarrassing nature of this problem, many suffer in silence. Deloitte Access Economics estimated that the cost of incontinence to the health system was expected to rise to $450 million by 2020. So what is incontinence? What causes it and most importantly what can be done about it? Incontinence is the involuntary or accidental loss of urine or faeces. It can range from a small volume leak to www.seniorsnews.com.au

The carnival was a resounding success, with 30 teams competing. The winners were the Pelican Waters Probus Club. .This very popular bowling event was enjoyed, along with a delicious meal, a great raffle, and the chance to meet fellow bowlers. ■ QCWA complete loss of control of the bladder or bowel or both. Urinary incontinence is usually divided into four main categories: stress incontinence; urge incontinence; overflow incontinence; and functional incontinence. Faecal incontinence is usually caused by weak pelvic floor muscles or sphincters from either childbirth, as a result of surgery or radiation therapy, or by lower bowel problems such as chronic constipation or diarrhoea. There are a range of management options for both urinary and faecal incontinence which begin with lifestyle interventions, pelvic floor exercises and bladder training. If, however, these types of interventions are ineffective, newer treatment options such as Botulinum Toxin injections into the bladder and sacral nerve neuromodulation can be highly effective. Minimally invasive sling surgery has also proven to be a highly effective treatment for certain types of urinary incontinence.

Recently, Tewantin Noosa Branch QCWA held a very successful street stall, with all proceeds going to Katie Rose Hospice and Public Rural Crisis Fund. Each recipient received $600 each. ■ Caloundra Family History Research Inc In October, member Ian Edwardson presented a talk titled Sounding the Symbols. Ian showed how mankind has always lived with symbols. They have been with us from cave paintings to computers. . Members also attended an educational on-screen demo on the LDS website FamilySearch. The group’s president, Valerie Thornton, was the presenter and she used the group’s excellent facilities, available to members, to explain the workings of the website and the myriad of information that a researcher can glean from the digitised records on the website. A member’s Christmas lunch is on Wednesday, December 2. The research facility will close on Saturday, December 12, at 12.30pm for four weeks, opening again on Saturday, January 9.

All of these newer treatment options now have rebates available through Medicare and private health insurance for eligible patients. I have found that many sufferers of this condition have tried many forms of therapy in the past without success, and may have given up, thinking that their life must now rely on incontinence aids such as pads, catheters and bedding protection. The newer methods of treatment are now offering these people a real possibility of a life without reliance on these products. Specialised incontinence centres, bringing together expert clinicians in gynaecology, urology and colorectal surgery, have now been established for patients looking for newer therapies and they offer comprehensive evaluation, testing and individualised management plans. ■ For more information send an email to info@Dr MichaelGillman.com. THE Noosa Leisure Centre takes its commitment to the community’s wellbeing seriously and its comprehensive group fitness program offers classes for all ages, abilities and genders. “The emphasis has always been on seniors, but it’s encouraging to see the recent increase in the number of males attending classes,” said centre coordinator Cathy Simon. “Men, who tend to have a reputation for neglecting their health, are starting to enjoy the many benefits of exercising in a group of like-minded people. “With professional and motivating instructors, the support and mateship of other men and results to boot, the guys are coming back for more,” she said.

The rewards of exercise are plentiful, and it is not just the body that profits. Even though weight loss, diabetes and blood pressure control, and the assistance in the prevention of chronic diseases are among the draw cards, studies have shown that the social atmosphere and increase in endorphins after exercise also have a positive impact on mental health. “Activities at the Noosa Leisure Centre that appeal to an increasing number of men are indoor bowls, table tennis and badminton, but they also enjoy other classes such as Boxfit, Pilates Fusion and Body Moves,” Ms Simon said. “We would love to see more males trying out our classes,” she said.

“The ladies and gentlemen who regularly participate invite all guys out there to join in and make the most of the health advantages of taking part in our group fitness program.” Group fitness participant Tony King said: “I have been to a number of fitness classes over my 69 years and Al’s Boxfit classes at Noosa Leisure Centre are the best I have ever been to.” Peter Jack, another male participant, said: “Seniors of all abilities, all shapes and sizes come along and we exercise together and have a lot of fun.” To view the centre’s current group fitness timetable visit www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ nlc/groupfitness or phone 5329 6550.

A view of Manhattan from the Empire State building.

Talk about having your head in the clouds – in New York, it has to be, or you miss out on the marvels of skyhigh beauties.

The Chrysler Building was surpassed by the Empire State Building as the tallest building in the world. But its art deco beauty is the focus.

Visiting the beautiful, crazy city of New York By GAIL FORRER

View from bridge in Central park.

Times Square characters. www.seniorsnews.com.au

A FLASH of falling yellow leaves make a beautiful carpet across the wide footpath of Riverside Drive, Manhattan. It’s the beginning of October, crisp blue skies, comfortably cool weather and a city dabbed with the colour of falling autumn leaves. I look up towards the swirl of leaves, but before I can take in the trees, my vision is caught up in the spectre of magnificent, mighty buildings reaching, pushing into the blueness. And there it is, all at once – New York – a city of nature, nurture and big ideas. The juxtaposition of so

much unspoilt nature growing amidst the densest concrete jungle is the world is a sight to behold. Manhattan Island is bounded by the Hudson, East and Harlem rivers. These rivers frame a crazy beautiful city that arguably attracts the biggest, the boldest and most wildly divergent lifestyles in the world. It’s a city where the skyline provides an understanding of its past, future and people. Up high, the cathedral style facades, modern blue glass, turrets, baroque design, Greek columns and pale green spirals pierce the heavens. It’s a showy exhibition mirroring the vision of architects, men of money

and construction workers. A built environment that, since its inception has echoed the collective imagination of an audacious tribe. Talk about having your head in the clouds – in New York, it has to be, or you miss out on the marvels of sky-high beauties. At around eight-and-a-half million, the city boasts one of the country’s biggest populations. Additionally, the tourism industry is booming with a record high of 56.4 million visitors in 2014. The New York City mayoral office attributed visitor numbers to: “Quality of life, low levels of crime and dynamism”.

Two months ago I became one of the 56 million, after trip that took about 24 hrs. I exited Brisbane Qantas airport with a couple of hours stopover in Los Angeles and arrival at JFK airport. From JFK airport, depending on the traffic, it takes a couple of hours to drive to Manhattan. Be it day or night, it is a fast, flash trip past the highs and lows of urban city life. Our holiday residence was a hotel room in the perfect position of Midtown at Hotel Marrakesh. It’s quirky, relatively cheap hotel and our room came with a great CONTINUED PAGE 29

The NEW 2015/16 edition of the Stonestreets Destinations brochure is packed full of our most exciting australian and international tours yet!

Phil Hawkes discovers some heavenly tourism attractions IF YOU haven’t been to Beijing before, don’t wait too much longer. The traffic is still navigable outside of peak hours and if you pick the right season, the air is still relatively clear. We chose early spring, when trees and flowers were blooming and the smoky days of winter were some way off. Autumn and spring are recommended times for a Beijing visit. And why not? It’s a city that should be on everyone’s bucket list, simply because Australia’s en-

gagement with China suggests that we need to know more… a lot more… about Chinese history, culture and customs. There’s no better place to start than fascinating Beijing. Things You Should Know There are currently no direct flights from Brisbane to Beijing. The best option is Air China from Sydney or Melbourne, direct to Beijing’s Capital Airport. If you’re looking for maximum comfort on their overnight flight, Air China’s Business Class is superb, with lie-flat beds and a Mercedes limo to meet you on arrival! You can get a free 72-hour visa on arrival. Choose a hotel that’s in between the airport and the downtown area. Why? The further you are from the airport, the more you’ll run into traffic problems that take the shine off the whole trip. The brand new fivestar NUO Hotel has the perfect location and it will also give you an experience of Ming Dynasty style blended with a gallery of contemporary Chinese art. The dining area is a gigantic food hall with all kinds

of ethnic cuisine and the basement is devoted to a gym, 25-metre pool, wellness treatment rooms and yoga space. Next to NUO is the threestar Tangram Hotel for alternative, great value accommodation. The hotels’ concierges are extremely helpful and will organise local tours to the Great Wall (an absolute must-see) and other major attractions such as Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven. Getting around by subway is easy, fast, cheap and interesting … highly recommended. Shopping for silks and antiques is fun and good value, but you’ll find luxury brand name goods more expensive than in Australia. They’re priced for the wealthy Chinese! Make sure to try authentic Peking Duck from a place not crowded with tour groups… Hua’s Restaurant is highly recommended. Your hotel will give you taxi directions. www.visitbeijing.com.cn www.airchina.com www.nuohotel.com

HELLO ESCORTED JOURNEYS

You can expect to meet up with funky street performers throughout the city.

Free street theatre view across the streetscape of Broadway. The hotel is managed by the most hospitable of staff. Not for a moment is the street noise a problem. My friend and I loved it, the strange, different sounding sirens of NYPD (New York Police Department), the accent of hipster Afro Americans and were delighted with people who raise their voices to argue with partners, sing with mates or loudly declare a point of view. It’s New York, we’re there to see and hear it all. Everyday is an adventure – but here’s a few highlights; In the front of the magnificent facade of Museum of Natural History you are met with the words of President Theodore Roosevelt – knowledge, truth, vision. The President’s environmental values prompted the construction and focus of this mindblowing museum. The mission statement of the American Museum of Natural History is: “To discover, interpret, and disseminate—through scientific research and education—knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe.” And while this museum tells a big story, close by the story of Central Park is alive and well. In the middle of Manhattan an area of 840 glorious, thriving, blooming, spacious acres provides a peaceful sanctuary for the busy New Yorker. This oblong slash of green is parted in the middle with a beautiful flowing lake. It’s home to thousands of squirrels who bounce throughout the www.seniorsnews.com.au

trees. As we walk through Central Park, little somethings splatter on our heads and we realise it these tiny bushy tailed creatures breaking chestnuts above us. No matter where you go Times Square, Wall Street, Grand Central Station, there is always a spare, quiet seat in Central park to revive yourself. On the clear blue day, we gazed down from the Empire State building and marvelled at the tall, piles of buildings, in shapes that defied their position, and again it made us wonder how a city, so busy, could have made time and space for something as tranquil and fun as Cental Park. And those who built the subway have gifted another bit of luxury for New York. It is easy and cheap to get around New York. For $31 (USA) you could travel around for a week. But you are easily brought to earth when out the blue, there are some incredible hip-hop dancers doing their thing on the sidewalk in front you, or the notes of a random blues singers are playing just a little ahead of you.

sures in themselves, effectively part of the collection housed there. The Cloisters’ collection comprises approximately two thousand works of art. *High Line: (also known as the High Line Park) is a 2.33 km linear park built in Manhattan on an elevated section of a disused New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line. Inspired by the 4.8kilometer Promenade Plantée in Paris, the High Line has been redesigned and planted as an aerial greenway and rails-totrails park.

Vibrant, fascinating city WHERE: Ho Chi Minh City WHAT: Bustling city situated in the southern part of Vietnam. Also known as Saigon. WHY: This vibrant city embodies the rhythms and energy of a rapidly developing nation widely touted as one of Asia’s next economic powerhouses. Remnants of a French colonial past are evident in Saigon’s architecture and culinary offerings as are reminders of the Vietnam War. Ho Chi Minh City offers a fascinating destination for travellers to South-East Asia.

Consumer demand in China has been stronger despite the fall in the stock market and retails sales numbers are beyond expectations. Recent data out of China indicates that growth is stabilising and fears of a hard landing were overstated. There has also been evidence that activity picked up in advanced economies in October. The Chinese stock market has stabilised in response. The changes haven’t made their way through to the real economy yet, but the market is expecting stimulus measures to kick in during the last quarter.

The main goal is to make term deposits more attractive as the banks compete for funding sources that attract better capital treatment. The falling commodity market has stabilised, supported by the expectation of better demand from China and beyond. This family fun event starts at 6.30pm, and is a great opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate the festive season and sing along to some of your favourite carols. An annual event, the concert features an array of music much like a spray of gifts under a tree. The day will have something for everyone, the first half containing beautiful vocal arrangements such as

I Dreamed a Dream featuring Tanya McFadyen and sensational instrumental numbers such as an Artie Shaw medley which “showcases” Paul Williams a professional musician who has had the wonderful experience of backing artists such as Isaac Hayes, Cilla Black, Al Martino, Gene Pitney and Linda Ronstadt with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.
