Howard Laravea, a keyboardist for iconic 1970s rock-pop band Three Dog Night, doesn’t know why the group’s biggest hit, “Joy to the World,” opens with the puzzling but memorable verse “Jeremiah was a bullfrog.”

“If only we could ask Hoyt Axton,” Laravea said with a smile, referring to the late singer-songwriter-guitarist and “Gremlins” actor who penned the tune that became Billboard magazine’s top pop single of 1971 and sold 5 million copies worldwide.

Laravea has been performing the crowdpleasing, concert-closing song with Three Dog Night since he joined the band in 2017.

“It doesn’t get much better; we’re selling out every night,” said the 70-year-old Tulsa, Oklahoma native, who performed an intimate Sunday brunch show with his wife, Pearl Joy, at Urban Prime Marketplace & Restaurant in Viera during a break in Three Dog Night’s nearly 100-city tour.

The couple, who married in 1988 and moved from Nashville to Viera in 2012 to be closer to Pearl Joy’s parents, have performed as Pearl Joy and Howard throughout Brevard County and Florida

when Laravea is not on the road. Laravea plays a Yamaha keyboard, while Pearl Joy sings and plays guitar.

“We play a variety of styles and obscure selections,” Laravea said. “Depending on the venue, the playlist may be some R&B, Latin, rock or jazz. We started performing on the side after moving here and have met so many wonderful new friends who come out to support us and have fun and enjoy the music.”

The Urban Prime gig came about while the couple was dining at the restaurant, he said. “We were just here having lunch and Chef Ercan (Ekinci) came up and introduced himself. I think he found out something about us and asked us to play. So we thought we’d go ahead and do it.”

A musician since childhood with an interest in piano and guitar, Laravea has worked with such artists as Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, Kenny Rogers, Rick Danko of The Band, The Grass Roots, Gretchen Wilson and John Rich of Big & Rich. He’s performed in many famous venues including Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall and the Grand Ole Opry and has appeared on numerous television and awards shows such as the Grammy Awards and the Country Music Awards.

Howard and Pearl

Joy Laravea of Viera perform occasionally in Brevard County when Howard isn’t touring with the legendary pop band Three Dog Night.

Pearl Joy, born in Hawaii of Filipino heritage and raised in a military family, also discovered a love of music at an early age, singing in grade schools and church choirs. After her father retired from the U.S. military when Pearl Joy was 18, the family moved to Richmond, Virginia. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, then moved to New Jersey and joined a local band. A year later, she moved to California where she met and married Laravea. After six years, the couple moved to Nashville and raised two children.

“I’ve always loved singing,” said Pearl Joy, who also works as a mobile DJ and a freelance graphic designer who creates informative video tutorials. “I sing all the time. I sing in the car.”

As a Three Dog Night member, Laravea performs with a band

that scored 21 consecutive Top 40 hits, including three No. 1 singles and 11 Top 10 songs, and 12 consecutive certifiedgold albums. The band’s hits include “One,” “Black and White,” “Shambala,” “Mama Told Me (Not to Come)” and “Easy to be Hard.”

The band’s now-famous name originated from native Australian hunters who snuggled with their dogs for warmth on cold nights. The chilliest evening was considered a “three-dog night.”

Only one original member is still in the band’s current lineup: founder-vocalist Danny Hutton. The group made a Brevard County tour stop on Dec. 7 at the Maxwell King Center for the Performing Arts.

Three Dog Night recorded numerous songs written by some of the best new songwriters of the time, including Axton, Elton John, Randy Newman, Paul Williams, Harry Nilsson and Laura

Nyro. However, their penchant for using songs written by others might be a key reason why the band hasn’t been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, despite having entertained fans for 55 years and selling tens of millions of records “As this glaring omission from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame illustrates, the music industry is not averse to politics,” Laravea said. “Our many fans will be happy when this has been rectified.”

Away from the excitement of nationwide tours, packed venues and cheering crowds, the Laraveas are glad to call Viera home.

“We’ve been down here 12 years now,” Laravea said. “So we’re happy, we’re very happy.”

HURRICANE SHELTER INFORMATION

Brevard County strongly urges that a public shelter be used only as a last resort. You will be more comfortable sheltering with friends, family or in commercial lodging.

BRING THE FOLLOWING TO THE SHELTER:

1. Enough food and supplies to last several days, including special diet foods, since food might not be readily available at the shelter.

2. Bottled water (two quarts/person/day) and other beverages.

3. A manual can opener, eating utensils, paper plates, cups and napkins/paper towels.

4. Infant formula/food/diapers and wipes.

5. Two-week supply of medications and First-aid kit.

6. Cash or traveler’s checks.

7. Sleeping bags, blankets, pillows and folding chairs. Bedding is not provided in public shelters.

8. Personal hygiene items and changes of clothing.

9. Flashlight, battery-powered radio/TV and spare batteries, cards, games, books and toys.

10. Include items that can help protect you and others from COVID-19, such as hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, bar or liquid soap, disinfectant wipes (if available) and two masks for each person.

Do not take pets (except guide dogs), alcoholic beverages or weapons of any kind into public shelters.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION SHELTERS

Shelter openings are incident specific

Never go to a shelter unless local officials have announced it is open. Shelter openings will be announced through local television, radio stations, social media and the Brevard County Emergency Management website.

Shelters are designed to house residents of the barrier islands (including Merritt Island), those in low-lying or flood-prone areas, those in mobile/manufactured homes, or those with no other sheltering options.

If you choose to go to a shelter, follow these instructions:

• Stay as calm as possible and take your disaster supply kit.

• Bring your own cots or sleeping materials.

• Bring changes of clothing and wear sturdy shoes.

• If you have dietary restrictions, bring food that you will be able to eat.

• Practice social distancing. Stay at least 6 feet from other people outside of your household.

• Follow CDC COVID-19 preventive actions — wash your hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, and follow shelter policies for wearing masks.

• Bring what you need to stay comfortable and entertained.

• Not all shelters will have electricity throughout the emergency.

• Shelter rules — If staying in a shelter, be aware of the shelter rules:

• We are guests. Please treat the facility, equipment and staff respectfully.

• No disorderly or disruptive behavior will be allowed.

• No smoking, alcohol or drugs allowed.

• No guns or weapons of any kind permitted.

• You must sign in when you arrive and sign out when you leave.

Other shelters are available and are opened once the primary shelter has reached 85 percent occupancy rate.

SPECIAL NEEDS SHELTER:

The Special Needs Registry is a confidential listing of those people who meet program criteria and is updated on an annual basis. Patients with colostomy assistance needs, nebulizers, oxygen, feeding tubes or Alzheimer’s disease are examples of medical criteria that are eligible for the registry.

Individuals who elect to use a Special Needs or other public shelter should bring with them items such as cots, bedding, medicine, medical supplies and food supplies, preparing to be self sufficient for 72 hours. Special Needs registrants should also be accompanied by at least one caregiver. Occupants’ comfort will be determined by their preparedness.

Paddlewheeler offers a cruise into days gone by

For 20 years, the triple-deck riverboat Indian River Queen has been cruising the river and lagoon for which it is named, carrying passengers on a unique, leisurely journey that harkens back to the days of Mark Twain, when mighty paddle wheel boats traveled the nation’s waterways.

“There aren’t too many of them left,” owner-founder and event planner Penny Flaherty said of the 100-foot-long paddlewheeler, which docks at Cocoa Village Marina at 90 Delannoy Ave. “There’s a lot of nostalgia with it.”

After purchasing the riverboat, which was built in 1984 and was in a scene in the 2003 Denzel Washington film “Out of Time,” Flaherty and her crew moved the boat from Flaherty’s hometown of Fort Lauderdale to the Space Coast and spent about two years renovating it. The renamed Indian River Queen took its first Space Coast cruise in 2004, she said. With its eye-catching red paddle wheel, the Indian River

Queen has room for up to 234 people. The boat specializes in private charters such as weddings, corporate events, reunions, birthday parties and anniversaries, but also offers several trips for the public, including brunch and dinner cruises, Flaherty said.

“We just started a daily one-hour historic cruise ‘It Takes a Village,’ which is popular for seniors,” she said. “After the cruise they can walk over to Cocoa Village and enjoy lunch and shopping and it doesn’t tie up their whole day. It’s very inexpensive, so it’s something they can do over and over again.”

Passengers enjoy spectacular views of the river and lagoon, home to manatees, birds and dolphins.

“People love riverboats,” Flaherty said. “It makes you feel good when you’re on board.” BG

Country sextet enjoys entertaining audiences by playing classic hits from 1970s to 1990s.

Thomas Tritt and the Blue Diamond Band have embraced becoming boomers and seniors. They like the country music they play and the people who come out to watch them play at venues around Brevard County.

“I still laugh about one guy calling us the ‘geriatric jamboree,’ ‘’ said Tritt, who owns Tritt Productions with his friend Pamela Burdette. “We play real country music with the tradition of the 1980s and 1990s, and some stuff from the 1970s. The music of Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Johnny Paycheck, Brooks & Dunn and Dwight Yoakam. We have a heavy guitar lead, a good hard drum beat and a strong bass.’’

Tritt plays the rhythm guitar and is a vocalist; Carl Fanning, a bluegrass guy according to Tritt, plays the pedal steel guitar; Bradley Mohr is the lead guitarist; Wade Vargo plays the bass; Darrell Hadley is a keyboard player; and Roger Holloway plays the drums.

“We cut our torch at Siggy’s about six years ago,’’ said the 54-year-old Tritt, who spent most of his youth in

Melbourne with a brief hiatus in Live Oak where he graduated from Suwannee High School in North Florida while his father was a preacher. “We played some charity event there. We started playing charity events everywhere, and that’s when we put the country

music thing together. It got to be a lot of fun and it went from there.’’

Besides Siggy’s in Palm Bay, the Blue Diamond Band often performs at Lone Cabbage Fish Camp in Cocoa, Urban Prime in Viera, the Pineda Inn in Suntree and The Shack on U.S. 1 in Palm Bay.

“Lots of music runs in my family,’’ Tritt said. “I have relatives who performed in a couple of Southern Gospel tours. Music was always around. I was always playing the guitar or the piano. But, it wasn’t until later in life in my late 20s or early 30s - that I really got into it. My job as a truck driver took me away a lot.’’

Now 70, Fanning loved the Beatles as a child.

“We all wanted to be like them,’’ Fanning said. “The Beatles were such a big influence. Playing the pedal steel guitar is something I enjoy a great deal. It’s a totally different instrument. My guitar has two necks and each neck has 10 strings. You can raise or lower the strips and the pitch of the strings.’’

“Everything goes away when I’m on stage,’’ Tritt said. “There’s no arthritis or any other pain. It’s like stepping into a different character. Another person inside of me opens up. Off stage, I’m really an introvert. I don’t like the attention that much. Music keeps me up and motivated to do other stuff.’’ BG

After graduating from Vassar College with an acting degree, Ohio native Nancy Johnson of Melbourne lived in New York City for six years before returning to Cleveland and then moving to Florida in 1986.

Bill Antonetz’s love of cars began as a 12 year old in Connecticut when he took apart a 1954 DeSoto, under the guidance of his father, and restored it.

Antonetz organizes monthly car shows that draw hundreds of vehicles waiting to be ogled.

As a volunteer at the American Muscle Car Museum in Melbourne, Antonetz helps during the many fundraisers the venue offers as a gift to the community.

Mark Holley’s wife Shyrl said they were going to try out to be models, so he went along. They were both selected.

“I love being in front of people,” said the former bellman at a major hotel chain in New York. “Opportunities don’t come often until you make yourself available.”

Holley loves to golf, play chess and bowl, once rolling a 287 game.

“It was during practice before my league game,” said Holley, who averages about 187.

A heart transplant couldn’t stop Suntree resident Kim Gabriel from returning to acting.

Born in England at a U.S. airbase, Gabriel chose a theater scholarship in New York over a 1976 congressional nomination to be among the first women to attend West Point. She started a business, moved to Los Angeles where she met her husband and had a child, then moved to Melbourne.

Cocoa resident John Prink spent decades as a police officer in New York and San Francisco after leaving the Coast Guard.

Now retired, Prink is enjoying the good life with his wife.

“I live on a 2-acre ranch,” he said. “I have horses that I attend to. I swim. I work out. I play drums in blues band Blue Revival.”

Prink has done podcasts and has appeared in a few films, including the Sharon Stone film “Running Wild.” He is working on a local film called “Shadows.”

Gabriel did public relations with a local Chamber of Commerce before acting in shows such as “Superboy” and “Unsolved Mysteries.”

She became a Habitat for Humanity executive before health issues led to a heart transplant at the Mayo Clinic.

Port Canaveral, already the second-busiest cruise port in the world, will get even busier this year.

Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line are adding new cruise ships to their fleets operating at the Port. Norwegian Cruise Line is bringing two ships to the Port, and ships from Princess Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruise Line will sail from the Port for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s 2,400-guest Norwegian Jade will home port at Port Canaveral’s Cruise Terminal 10 from April 9 through Aug. 22, offering seven-night eastern Caribbean sailings before repositioning to Miami.

Beginning Oct. 30, the Norwegian Epic will offer multiple seven-day cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean. Depending on the departure date, port calls will include Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; Cozumel, Mexico; and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

of the Seas will join its sister mega-ship Wonder of the Seas and make its maiden voyage from the Port, offering three- and four-night cruises to Nassau, Bahamas, and Royal Caribbean’s private Bahamian island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

The cruise ships are two of world’s biggest. Utopia of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s sixth Oasis-class ship and the second-largest cruise ship afloat, is 1,198 feet long, more than 230,000 gross tons and will carry 5,668 guests at double occupancy. The 18-deck ship will offer 21 dining venues, 23 bars, five pools and two casinos among its many amenities.

“The Caribbean continues to be a hotspot for our guests all around the world, especially during the fall and winter seasons,” Norwegian Cruise Line President David. J. Herrera said.

In July, Royal Caribbean’s giant Utopia

“We’re really excited,” said Port CEO Captain John Murray, who called the Utopia of the Seas “a destination” during Port Canaveral’s State of the Port address. “This is the first time that Royal Caribbean has put a brand new ship of this size in a three- or four-day rotation and they’re doing it at Port Canaveral. So it says a lot about our cruise guests and their confidence they have that we can fill the ships.”

Utopia of the Seas but carries more passengers. It sails from Cruise Terminal 1 on seven-night voyages to the Bahamas and eastern and western Caribbean.

Utopia of the Seas also will be the first Oasis-class ship powered by cleaner-burning liquefied natural gas (LNG).

“Homeporting this first LNG-powered Oasis-class ship at Port Canaveral to sail these very popular shorter itineraries exemplifies the trust and commitment our valued cruise partners have in our Port and thus community to deliver a high-quality experience,” Murray said. “We’re tremendously proud.”

On Nov. 27, Princess Cruise Line will make its Port debut as the Caribbean Princess will offer alternating schedules of seven-night voyages to the eastern or western Caribbean or 14-night cruises to both destinations. The two-year-old Caribbean Princess carries 3,140 guests at double occupancy and 1,200 crew members.

The following month, Celebrity Cruises, another cruise line making its Port debut, will offer 20 eastern and western Caribbean journeys aboard the 2,850-passenger Celebrity Equinox starting on Dec. 3.

On Dec. 18, Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Venezia will begin four- to 14-night cruises to the Bahamas, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal from the Port.

Repositioned from New York, the 4,232-guest Carnival Venezia will embark its first guests from Port Canaveral and depart for a four-day Bahamas cruise, visiting Nassau and Freeport to kick off its winter series. The ship will then operate 15 seven-day cruises, rotating itineraries and visiting a variety of popular destinations, as well as sailing two special 14-day Carnival Journeys cruises. After its seasonal deployment, the ship will return to New York in spring 2025.

In service since 2019, Carnival Venezia will join Carnival Mardi Gras, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Glory and Carnival Vista at the Port. BG

Companion Animal Care fulfills legacy for retiree

Baird adopted Peanut through Companion Animal Care of Brevard County (CAC). The nonprofit organization, which was founded by Christine Evans in 2023, helps find foster homes or permanent homes for dogs and cats that might otherwise become homeless. It could be temporary if a senior is undergoing surgery and needs time to recuperate or it could become permanent if the senior is unable to live at home ever again.

“I’ve always loved animals,’’ said Evans, who left her job at Penn State as an adjunct instructor for the Department of Homeland Security and as the manager for G.I. benefits to form the nonprofit group. “I read an article about a group in California that helps older dogs. That put it in my mind that I needed to do this.’’

Evans’ parents moved to Viera several years ago and lived at the Indian River Colony Club in retirement. Her father was a captain in the Navy. Her sister moved to Melbourne after them.

“As a U.S. Navy captain, we moved around a lot,’’ said the 62-year-old Evans. “Wherever they lived became home for me. I always loved the Melbourne area.’’

Losing both of her parents within

an 11-month span in 2019 and 2020 prompted a lot of personal thought and reflection.

“I thought about what kind of legacy do I want to leave behind?’’ said Evans, who lived in the Washington, D.C. area, Hawaii and New Orleans as a child. “What will they say about me? The Lord placed this in my heart. This is the ministry I want to pursue. I was going through a divorce. We sold our home out in the country and that was the driving force to leave my job and start now.’’

CAC also established and runs Paws Pantry, which supplies pet food to local food pantries in Brevard County. Paws Pantry rents a truck once a month to drive to Fort Lauderdale to buy food at a discount rate. The Pet Project run by Greater Goods in Fort Lauderdale has been vital to the effort.

“We’ve had great feedback,’’ said Evans, admittedly a dog person, who adopted an 18-pound cat named Sherlock from someone who could no longer live at home. “Everyone thinks this is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The food banks are grateful and that gratitude fills my heart.’’

More volunteers always are needed.

“We definitely need fosters, long or short term,’’ Evans said. “Anyone who can volunteer is welcome to sign up. And, we’re always looking for financial support.’’

Leaving the house becomes easier if a senior knows their pet will be safe. “I’ve always had a soft spot for the elderly,’’ Evans said. “I knew more about my parents’ friends than my own. Pets are their family and the fear of having no one to take care of them is always a concern.”

Sophia, a Shih-Tzu, and Rascal, a mixed-breed dog, share Evans’ attention with Sherlock. Evans still thinks fondly of her first dog, Flicka, a Beagle her family adopted when she was 5 years old.

Baird never thought she would own a French Bulldog again after a relationship ended and the ex-boyfriend took their shared French Bulldog.

“It crushed me (when I lost the dog),’’ said Baird, a Merritt Island High School alumna, who graduated with two bachelor’s degrees from Florida State and a law degree from Georgia State. “I won’t support breeders and making a profit off of dogs. It was just serendipitous that a French Bulldog needed to be rescued. Peanut is definitely a character; he’s precocious.’’

Originally, Peanut was supposed to join her parents’ household.

“I thought about that, but then I’m thinking, I kind of like this guy,’’ said Baird, who also teaches social science classes at EFSC. “He’s chubby, but he’s a cutie.’’

The museum features Space Age exhibits, spacecraft parts, astronaut suits, photos, working launch consoles and Soviet cosmonaut mementos. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Admission: $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (65+) and military (with ID), $5 for children ages 13 to 18. Free for museum members and kids 12 and under.

The 3.1-mile multi-use boardwalk and asphalt trail runs from the zoo east along I-95 through wetlands and oak hammocks, under the Pineda Overpass, and ends at Turtle Mound. The trail is open during zoo operating hours from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. It can be accessed at Turtle Mound, Pineda Causeway and the Brevard Zoo parking lot.

Admission: Free.

Formerly the Air Force Space and Missile Museum, the museum includes artifacts from the early American space program. Because Cape Canaveral Space Force Station is a working military facility, visiting the museum and touring the grounds is allowed by certified tours only. However, the Sands Space History Museum, located just outside the station gate, is open to the public. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

This 9.1-acre community beach park welcomes dogs, which must be on a leash and must wear tags showing their current license and vaccinations. Owners must pick up after their pets. Waste bags and receptacles are available, The wheelchairaccessible park also has three dune crossovers, a pavilion, grill, a picnic shelter, restrooms, a drinking fountain and outside showers. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

How to register to vote!

To register, the Florida Voter Registration Application Form must be completed. This form, which is also used to notify the Elections Office of a change in your name, address, party affiliation or to update a signature, can be found online and at locations listed below, or you may request that an application be mailed. Registration or changes must be received by the Elections Office at least 29 days before an election. After the application is received, a Voter Information Card that includes your precinct number and voting districts will be mailed.

VOTING MAIL/ABSENTEE BALLOT

Any registered voter may vote by mail. Mail/Absentee ballot requests may be in person, by regular mail, e-mail or by phone to the Supervisor of Elections. All requests must be received no later than 5 p.m. the sixth day before the election, and ballots must be received at the Election Office by 7 p.m. on Election Day to be eligible to be counted. A new vote by mail ballot must be requested for each General Election cycle.

EARLY VOTING

Prior to election day, early voting for federal or state races is available at all Supervisor of Elections offices and, at the Supervisor’s discretion, at certain other locations, beginning 10 days before Election Day and running through the third day before the election. Additional early voting may be offered at the Supervisor’s discretion on the 15th through

11th days and on the second day before the election. Identification requirements for early voting are the same as for voting on Election Day. Florida law requires each voter to present an unexpired form of identification containing the voter’s name and photograph. If the identification does not also contain the voter’s signature, additional identification containing that signature is required.

REFERENDUMS

A referendum may be called at any time on any issue that requires a vote of the people. All voters may vote regardless of party affiliation.

POLITICAL PARTY AFFILIATION

Florida is a closed primary state. If you want to vote in a partisan Primary Election, then you must be a registered voter with the political party for which the primary election is held. All registered voters may vote on issues, amendments and for non-partisan candidates such as: judges, school board and city council members, regardless of party affiliation. Political party changes can be requested no later than 29 days before the election through the election offices.
