OVERVIEW OF THE TOUR BUS

The John Lennon Educational Tour Buses are state-of-the-art non-profit mobile production studios outfitted with the very latest in audio and video technology and a raft of musical instruments. Made possible through long standing agreements with Yoko Ono Lennon, the Lennon Bus and its programs share John Lennon’s long held personal wish for people everywhere to embrace not only their creativity but in doing so, not only imagine, but also work towards world peace. Over the last 20 years, the Lennon Buses have impacted millions of students and visited over 2,000 schools across the United States of America, and since 2013 the European continent as well; working in simpatico with a network of local, regional and national organisations, educators, business leaders and elected officials. Each Bus has a crew of 3 producer/educators who live on-board and tour both continents for around 42 weeks each calendar year, delivering programs and services designed for small, medium and large groups - mainly students, giving all the opportunity to sample a world of creativity as each student begins to learn how to write, record, and produce original songs, music videos, documentaries, and live multi-camera video productions. The Buses continue to be dedicated to providing young people with tours of the studios, participation in free digital media production workshops, and the production of giant peace signs across two continents. The unique beauty of the Lennon Buses is that literally this world of creativity can arrive on any school’s doorstep anywhere in the country, and most important, give access to those in remote communities; children who would never get to see such a state of art creative environment, let alone have the opportunity to create in such a unique environment. The Lennon Bus is highly adaptable, designed to provide students, their schools and communities with performances, hands-on demonstrations, remote recordings, and studio sessions customized for their needs, levels of experience and interest. Throughout the year, the buses travel continuously, visiting schools, music and technology conferences and events, and partners up with communities and media outlets to call attention to the importance of arts and digital media education. This is made possible by the newest technology available on the bus, which includes: • • • • • •

2 State-of-the-art non-profit audio, video and broadcast production studios Traditional and technology based musical instruments and microphones Robotic and hand-held HD cameras and drones Green Screen (Chromatte) capabilities Professional LED lighting, and Computers, iPads and Software

….. and guided by our expert team of 3 passionate and highly experienced navigators who take the students through a day of creativity, and in doing so perhaps turn on a 'light of possibility' for each student to experience first-hand and from it perhaps sow the seed of a life time career in the arts.

OBJECTIVES OF THE TOUR BUS

Building on the proven success of the two Lennon Bus currently touring in the U.S. and Europe, a Lennon Bus in Australia will benefit and reap the rewards from 20 years of learnings and incorporate those into the Australian program. The principal objective over the next ten years is to reach out and connect into every single community wherever within Australia; not only in major cities but especially the diaspora of small country towns and remote Aboriginal communities so as to work up close and personal with each student; making music, teaching digital media production, creating original multimedia content, and giving a voice to the often unheard stories and perspective of Australians from all walks of life. The Lennon Bus Australia will provide workshops, live events and career development programs produced in cooperation with our anticipated host partners and customise our content for local needs. The Lennon Bus Australia will provide over 250 stops per year to communities and students of all ages. The program will work at the grass roots together with local partners to create the excitement and energy that'll come from staging free events and school visits across the nation. The Australian bus will visit primary and secondary schools, technical colleges and universities, music festivals and concerts as well as conferences while working closely with community organisations to provide them with the opportunity to attach their messages to the bus, allowing it to not only be a vessel for music education but to also carry important community and social messages. These messages would target school attendance, ongoing and continuous education, mental health and healthy living, employment and career opportunities all while promoting John and Yoko’s vision of harmony, peace, racial integration and tolerance. This experience is enhanced by the use of 4 Lennon Bus Tents where students and the community get hands on with some of the same technology found on board the Bus with activities such as: Workshops; Jam Tent; Performances; Photo Booths; Music and Video Production; Hospitality; Activation of Cultural Initiatives; Prizes and Giveaways; Celebrity Meet and Greets, as well as incorporating government agencies such as health, education and NDIS so they can attach their message as part of the Lennon Bus program. One primary intention [and with the support of the schools] is to utilise the bus and its anticipated visit to each school, community and town as a positive incentive whereby schools particularly in remote communities are set the conditional challenge in terms of school attendance and application to meet specified targets so as to secure a bus visit to their school. These conditions can and will be set with each school principal. One of many positive outcomes the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus hopes to achieve is its untapped potential to provide significant and real positive advances to the Government’s Closing the Gap initiatives; a lofty yet achievable aim that cannot be underestimated going forward. The Close the Gap targets are: • • • • • •

close the life expectancy gap within a generation halve the gap in mortality rates for Indigenous children under five within a decade ensure access to early childhood education for all Indigenous four year olds in remote communities within five years halve the gap in reading, writing and numeracy achievements for children within a decade halve the gap for Indigenous students in year 12 attainment rates halve the gap in employment outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a decade

The John Lennon Education Tour Bus will aim to address and support a number of these targets through positive interaction with indigenous communities across the country.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE JLETB

Yoko Ono Lennon / Brian Rothschild

Twenty-one years ago, Yoko Ono Lennon and JLETB director Brian Rothschild conceived the seed of an idea now known and established throughout the US as The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. [JLETB]. Twenty-one years on that concept has delivered year in year out across the schools of America. The impact in America has been so positive a second bus is now in the final planning stages due to incredible demand for the Bus in schools across the country. In 2013 a JLETB was launched in Europe and continues to traverse the European continent these last 5 years. As at 2019 the JLETB is more than simply a concept; it is a proven commodity.

Senator Glenn Sterle

Senator Glenn Sterle has been and remains the primary driver for where we find ourselves today. Its his unquenchable passion that has driven this project and the small team for well over a year of hard slog now. In his own words, Glenn tells how this evolved …... “The JLETB first came to my attention in mid 2016 via a fellow sand groper, Robbie Williams, a highly regarded music industry veteran of some 40 years standing, who in casual conversation told me of a friend who’d recently seen this thing called the Lennon Bus at a show in LA. So impressed was he that this gentleman cold called Brian Rothschild to gauge if there was any interest in bringing the Lennon Bus to Australia and was told maybe the Europe bus might tour Australia for a short stay. I was heading to the US in Sept 2016 so through Robbie it was arranged I meet Brian in NYC and see the bus for myself. On the appointed day, I travelled to Kaufman Studios in NY and met with not only with Brian, but Yoko Ono as well. As soon as I climbed on board the bus and learnt of its work and successes particularly in lower social economic communities I was struck with the potential of what an Australian Lennon Bus could do for Australian kids, particularly in remote and rural communities. Fired up with the enormous potential good a concept like this could do for the community I represent, I returned to Australia and like an evangelist began to reach out to all and sundry to make an idea become real. Robbie Williams connected me with the legendary Michael Chugg and [now former] ARIA awards producer Mark Pope who immediately bought into the concept In February 2017 Brian Rothschild came to Australia and together with Michael Chugg and I met with many politicians from both sides of the house to gauge the level of government support to build an Australian Lennon Bus. I then travelled through the top end with Brian and started to hatch a plan to attempt to somehow make this real. In the last 12 months, the team has given up hundreds of hours and travelled thousands of miles in an attempt to launch a Lennon Bus in Australia I for one cannot wait to see the JLETB roll into our remote communities to give our kids the opportunity to experience what American kids have for 21 years now. And our team is committed to turning the dream of an Australian John Lennon Educational Tour Bus into a reality and we will not stop until it is achieved - it is the least we can do for our children”

Yoko Ono Lennon

Yoko Ono Lennon is a multimedia artist, singer, songwriter, and peace activist who is also known for her work in performance art, music, and filmmaking. She is the widow of John Lennon and Co-Founder of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus.

Brian Rothschild

Co-Founder/Executive Director Brian Rothschild grew up listening to the great harpsichord and piano music of the 18th and 19th century and began playing the piano at an early age. As a composer and songwriter, he began writing music for children’s theatre groups and upon graduating from Hampshire College, Mr. Rothschild was signed as an artist with Columbia Records under the name Iam Siam. In 1997, along with Yoko Ono Lennon, and David Sonenberg, Mr. Rothschild launched the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and created the first version of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. He has since devoted his time to expanding the project around the world with support from corporate sponsors including Apple, Montblanc, Canon, Gibson Guitar, Yamaha, Sony, Adobe, Juniper Systems and many more. Mr. Rothschild has been a frequent spokesperson, appearing on the Today Show, CBS Evening News, Good Morning America, BBC, Fox News, Huckabee, MTV, E! News, and countless local market TV and radio shows. He has also been a speaker at events and conferences including UNESCO Youth Forum, NAMM Show, TED, TED Active, NAB, IBC, Apple ADE, CES, MacWorld, AES and Musikmesse.

Michael Chugg

A pioneer of the Australian music industry, Michael Chugg has garnered a reputation both locally and internationally as one of the country’s most prominent music promoters, and is a name synonymous with some of biggest tours to have come through Australia and New Zealand over the past 50 years. Chugg’s foray into the music industry began in his hometown of Launceston, Tasmania in 1962, where he cut his teeth running dances and managing bands, before cofounding the Frontier Touring Company with Michael Gudinski and Phil Jacobsen in 1978. Frontier became the biggest promoter in Australia at the time, touring the likes of Frank Sinatra, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Guns N’ Roses, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and more. Since starting Chugg Entertainment in 2000, Michael Chugg has toured some of the biggest local and international artists in the world, and has picked up numerous industry accolades along the way. He has been named as Pollstar’s International Promoter of the Year four times, has twice picked up the Best Promoter gong at the International Live Music Conference, and has a multitude of Billboard Awards, Helpmann Awards, Country Music Awards, Musexpo Awards, Lifetime Achievement Awards and more under his belt. In June 1998, Michael was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of his contribution to the Australian music industry and his philanthropic involvement with various charities, including large-scale benefit concerts such as Wave Aid, Sound Relief and Live Earth.

Mark Pope

Mark Pope’s career in the Australian music industry began in 1978, promoting Billy Thorpe’s first show after Thorpe’s long stint in the U.S. Over the year’s Pope has worked at every level with some of Australia’s most successful musicians. In the 80’s he tour-managed and promoted The Angels, Cold Chisel and INXS and managed Jimmy Barnes’ solo career from 1984 to 1988. In 1987 he and INXS manager Chris Murphy co-conceived and produced the landmark Australian Made national tour; a series of seven ground breaking one day festivals featuring an all Australian line up touring six capital cities, playing to over 140,000 fans. The digitally restored movie of Australian Made directed by Richard Lowenstein was released late last year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of that history making tour and debuted at #1 on the ARIA charts. In 1991 Pope worked at Sony Music as head of Marketing, Australian Artists and worked with the likes of Midnight Oil, Tina Arena and Red Gum. In 1993 he was tasked with rebuilding Warner Music’s and signed domestic artist roster from scratch and and was responsible for signing and promoting Keith Urban, Regurgitator, The Superjesus, The Whitlams and Jimmy Barnes amongst others. Pope produced a golden run of ARIA Awards from 2002 to 2011 as well as key industry events for Rolling th Stone, X Box, the 125 anniversary of the legendary Alberts Productions and many more. Along with Michael Chugg and Joe Segreto, Pope co-produced Wave Aid [2005], Live Earth [2007] and Sound Relief [2009]; three history making one day ‘benefit’ festivals that collectively played to over 230,000 fans and raised around $12 million for the charities involved. Mark Pope continues to this day with the premise that began some 40 years ago; and that is the nurturing, developing and promoting of Australian musicians, both here and overseas.

LIKELY OUTCOMES TO BE ACHIEVED The fundamental outcome is to first secure the necessary funding to build the Lennon Bus and then have it out on the road to the four corners of the country from February 2020 for 42 weeks a year over the first three years. Logically the next outcome to achieve is to launch the JLETB in such a high profile and creative way that not only Australia becomes aware of the Lennon Bus but also has a high degree of understanding of the JLETB charter and it’s aims along with a high degree of detail on what the Lennon Bus program is about. This awareness campaign will roll out over a 12-month period through a well-crafted marketing and publicity campaign from the first announcement on February 2019 to the first stop on a three-year tour of duty in February 2020 and beyond. Once these foundations are forged, then comes the true purpose and intended outcome we seek; to fully engage and excite the youth of Australia - with a particular focus on Indigenous and remote communities and those who live with the burden of growing up in lower socio-economic circumstance - and hopefully introduce them to a new pathway forward not previously considered. The JLETB intends by its presence nationally and locally to introduce a world of possibility previously unknown, let alone contemplated by children disadvantaged due to circumstance and in doing perhaps so light a fuse of passion and desire to pursue a vocation in the creative world of the arts. Overall outcome at a student level cover a broad array of elements such as …... • • • • • • • • • • •

Self-worth/confidence School attendance Ongoing education/study Mental and physical health awareness Environmental awareness Multiculturalism Indigenous Language, lore, culture and land Scholarships Traineeships Career goals Broader understanding of the music industry, not just in music styles but in the education of musical production.

There is also the opportunity for Indigenous youth through an Internship program who show an instinctive aptitude for the program to become ambassadors and actually travel on the bus as one of the team teaching the JLETB program so as to gain valuable skills and expertise whilst providing valuable cultural content to the work undertaken. From the experience and outcomes garnered over the last 20+ years, there is empirical evidence the Lennon Bus program does have a positive and profound impact on children’s lives in what can be a difficult and challenging period navigating through life and actually change life paths for the better.

6

WHO WOULD MANAGE/OPERATE/STAFF THE BUS - what expertise would these staff require / possess?

Lennon Bus Australia will be managed and operated by JLSC Educational Tour Bus, Inc. which has the exclusive rights and 21 years of experience with the development, staffing, programming and operations of Lennon Bus US and Lennon Bus Europe. Local representation will be headed by a non-for-profit foundation chaired by Michael Chugg AM and the administration will be headquartered in the Chugg Entertainment offices. It is the JLETB’s intention to have a minimum of 1 Indigenous artist to have a seat on the Australian based board of the not-for profit foundation. US and European crew members will initially come to Australia for a 3-month period to interview potential Australian crew members and train same, again with the view to source and train an indigenous member as part of the team within the first two years of operation. Australian crew members will be drawn from an intensive recruitment program who first must share the same passion and ethos of JLETB in order to make a positive difference to young lives; and professionally, be highly trained audio, video and live sound engineers and talented souls who are also multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, teachers and on-camera media spokespeople. Indigenous Australians will be encouraged and supported to apply for these opportunities. Those Australian crew members will then hit the road living on board and deliver Lennon Bus programs across Australia in the same manner that has been developed over the last 21 years.

ANNUAL REVIEW PROCESS On the completion of each school/community visit it is our intention to conduct exit reviews and suggested recommendations from each school and community. Each of these reports will be compiled into an annual review on the Lennon Bus operations and its programs to ensure we seek continuous improvement and refinement with the program and to ensure the JLETB charter and stated objectives are being met. The Indigenous community, schools and stakeholders will be encouraged to contribute to those annual reviews.

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN/OUTLINE INCLUDING PROPOSED TIMELINE Financial Plan & Timeline

$10.5 Million from commercial, philanthropic and government sources will provide the funds for the development, construction and subsequent operation of the Lennon Bus in Australia for 3 years. The government’s provision of $2.4 Million by September 1, 2018 will allow for the commencement of the Development Phase, and the construction of the new Lennon Bus Australia.

Pre-Development Phase

(Now - September 2018) Fundraising and commitments from government, commercial and philanthropic sources.

Development Phase

(January - September, 2019) Design and construction of Lennon Bus Australia, hiring and training of staff, program development and scheduling of events.

Launch Phase

(October 2019) Kicks off with a national high profile one day festival [Come Together] early October in either Sydney or Melbourne and immediately followed by a 7-week national up close and personal ‘Get to Know the JLETB’ tour through Darwin, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide and Perth. The Lennon Bus will be housed in one central location in each city whereby members of the public will be able to take a tour of the bus and learn firsthand the program. This national tour will generate further media coverage that will emanate from the launch benefit concert in early October and come Christmas 2019, the nation will not only know of the Lennon Bus but also gain a high degree of understanding on the aspirations and aims of the JLETB program

3 Years of Operations

(February 2019) Commence a three-year tour of duty with over 250+ scheduled events per year. For the sake of clarity please be advised the JLETB will be visiting schools and Indigenous communities across the country at zero cost to any school or community.

11

HOW WOULD THE LENNON BUS BE PROMOTED?

February 2019

Once funding is secured we intend to announce the JLETB and its aspirational charter and ambitious plan around February 2019 via a national front page print feature story. This feature will undoubtedly light a flame of national interest and bring the nation in, in such high profile and excitement charged manner; one of many knock-on effects being that the piece will likely flush out every school principal in the land, all seeking a Lennon Bus visit to their school. This first announcement cannot be understated in terms of captivating and engaging every level of society in Australia, be it corporate, government, media, the youth demographic we are actively pitching the Lennon Bus to … indeed every citizen in Australia.

May 2019

Next phase will be the launch of the Come Together launch concert featuring up to twelve high profile Australian and international artists who we envisage coming on board at no cost [and in doing so raising more vital funding]

October 2019

The staging of a one day outdoor concert in either Sydney or Melbourne that’ll play to 50,000+ fans plus a possible broadcast audience of 1m. Given our previous experience in promoting and producing Wave Aid, Live Earth and Sound Relief benefit concerts (collectively raising over $12m), we found that these concerts also galvanised the media and captivated the nation. This next phase of our awareness campaign will unleash a similar avalanche of buy-in, profile and support, even more so if we are able to bring Yoko Ono down to Australia for the launch of The Lennon Bus.

October to December 2019

Straight after the Come Together benefit concert we intend to stage a 7-week national up close and personal ‘Get to Know the JLETB’ tour through Darwin, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide and Perth. The Lennon Bus will be housed in one central location in each city whereby members of the public will be able to take a tour of the bus and learn firsthand the program. This national tour will generate further media coverage that will emanate from the launch concert and by Christmas 2019, the nation will not only know of the Lennon Bus but also have a high degree of understanding on the aspirations and aims of the JLETB program all in readiness for the commencement of operations in February 2020.

Feb 2020 to December 2022

Once on the road the impact at local school, city and state levels will continue to generate constant feel good media stories and in way self-perpetuate the high anticipation appetite and interest in the Lennon Bus at both a grass roots and national level.

POTENTIAL FUNDING PARTNERS

Stated aim is to fund both the bus build and running costs from four primary sources.

Federal Government

Our stated aim is to secure up to $2.4m in funding from government to build and fit out the bus and that task is primarily being driven by Senator Glenn Sterle and supported by the efforts of Brian Rothschild, Michael Chugg and Mark Pope. To date a number of formal and informal pitch presentations to government have been implemented since February 2017; to Nigel Scullion, Indigenous Affairs; Mitch Fifield, Arts & Communications; Simon Birmingham, Education; Ken Wyatt, Ageing and Indigenous Health and Michaelia Cash, Jobs and Immigration. Other than a non-binding verbal commitment from Indigenous Affairs for $800k, none of the pitches to date have secured any formal funding commitment which is understandable. To state the obvious nothing concrete can be advanced until the formal scoping study is submitted and accepted by Government. Until then progress with government remains fluid, but looking positive. The key to securing philanthropic and corporate support is impacted on whether the JLETB succeeds in securing some level of formal support from government. Aside from funding, it’s reasonable to assume a formal imprimatur and endorsement from government brings with it authenticity and delivers a sense of confidence with the other sectors we are currently targeting with such an ambitious endeavour as this.

Philanthropic Sector

Our stated aim is to secure $2m from the philanthropic sector. Informal presentations have already been made to three very high profile Australians. Initial interest has been positive but for now remains fluid and won’t be advanced more formally until we have a firm read on what level of support we may secure from government.

Corporate Sector

Our stated aim is to secure $5m in commercial corporate deals with the sector. Over the last 12 months a number of presentations both informal and formal have been made to such high-profile brands as Telstra, Google, Apple, Qantas and Optus. All have been met positively and the concept seems to be gaining traction with two in particular. At the time of writing there is one corporation seriously looking at taking on the naming rights sponsorship of the JLETB exclusively but we are still some way from getting final confirmation as the sheer scope of this endeavour and its price tag works its way through the corporation’s internal processes. Interesting to note however their head of the Asia Pacific division not only loves the concept and seems to be a ‘right fit’ with their current corporate strategy, we understand he has a personal interest and passion for the plight of Australia’s indigenous community. Again, the recurring theme of Federal Government support is one question that in this case is also being asked.

Launch Concert

Our stated aim is to raise in excess of $1m from a national high-profile fund-raising concert similar in scope and size to the successful Wave Aid [in 2005 raising $2m], Live Earth [in 2007 raising $1m] and Sound Relief [in 2009 and raising $7m] - a series of benefit concerts produced and promoted by a team led by Michael Chugg, Mark Pope and Joe Segreto. Under the working title Come Together, the team will use its relationships, the high-profile cause and their proven track record in staging these types of benefit concerts to secure some of the highest profile names in music to deliver an audience of 50,000 plus to a one day concert event that in likelihood will be televised as well. Aside from the raising funds Come Together will serve as a high profile national marketing tool that in itself will promote the launch of the Lennon Bus, sell the brand and the story in a most innovative way in what will be a major national media event.

Fitzroy Valley District High School PO BOX 106 FITZROY CROSSING WA 6765 Telephone: (08) 9193 0900 Facsimile: (08) 9193 0950

To Whom It May Concern As the current principal of Fitzroy Valley District High School, I would like to whole heartedly support the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, Australia proposal. I am extremely excited by the opportunities that the tour bus would bring to regional and remote Kimberley schools in supporting and enhancing the authenticity of the Arts and Cultural curriculum. All too often, schools are driven by the academic curriculum, however, I belong strongly, that it is through the creative arts that problem solving, innovation and critical thinking opportunities arise and can be nurtured. Being a school in a community with many complex challenges, the Lennon Bus allows another opportunity for genuine learning to occur in ways that matter to the children and youth, within their context. Having the expertise come to them, tap into their interests and develop their talents is an exciting opportunity. It naturally supports our Big Picture Education framework which supports learning through interest projects and personalises the learning to have meaning and make a difference. Every learning journey requires an exhibition, and the Lennon bus provides another avenue for this to occur by celebrating with the child as they share what they have learnt and why that learning matters. It has a level of innovation and interest that will make a difference to the lives of the children to tell their stories, whether it be through music, words or pictures. I am willing to support the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, Australia with no hesitation as I believe the learning will build on student strengths, talents and will contribute to our school vision that states, "Our young people have strong futures in the Fitzroy Valley and beyond. Theyknow who they are, where they come from and how they can achieve success. They are connected to country and embrace the responsibility for cultural and environmental sustainability. They advocate for their rights and the rights of others - for social justice. They have the skills and knowledge to be the change." The Lennon bus can provide extra resourcing that supports them to be the change. I am thankful that we have the opportunity to be part of something new, exciting and motivating, and hope that my letter of support will carry favour for this project. Yours sincerely

Re: The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus

To whom it may concern, I had the pleasure to meet with the Executive Director and Co-founder of the John Lennon Bus Brian Rothschild in Canberra, where I assisted with organising an event in Parliament House for the program. The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus provides young people across Australia the opportunity to record songs, produce and shoot music videos as well as many other artistic activities. In my electorate of Wills the arts play a vital role in the community, providing a musical education will only further assist with children's education and will further enrich the community. I commend and strongly support the project to create a John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, the bus will provide invaluable musical education to children across Australia.
