“When did the reality of Quebec first hit you?” asked Jonathan Goldbloom ’72.
“I was brought up believing there is no difference between French Canadians and English Canadians,” David explained. In the provincial election this past April 7, the polls showing that the Parti québécois’ “Charter of Values” was supported by a majority of francophones “jolted” him.
“I wondered whether my faith had been misplaced,” he confessed. “But [the outcome of ]April 7 changed that.”
There have always been two Quebecs, David said. Old Quebec is rural, not adventuresome, still clinging a bit to the past. New Quebec, he said, still has the spirit of the coureur de bois. They are “the best businessmen in Canada today. Couillard united the two Quebecs. Now he only has one Quebec to run, not two.”
“If you have any investment to make in Quebec, now is the time to make it,” he advised.
“But don’t forget,” David concluded, “It takes a sense of humour to live in this town.” ■
SOLTENDIECK reporting for E-TALK
On August 21, 2013, CTV televisision announced that Devon Soltendieck 2002 joins eTalk as the new reporter for Canada’s most-watched entertainment series. Joining eTalk in its mission to profile and nurture Canadian talent, shine a spotlight on home-grown music, film, fashion and television, and provide a unique Canadian lens for international entertainment news, Soltendieck joins anchors Ben Mulroney and Tanya Kim, senior reporter Danielle McGimsie, and fellow reporters Lainey and Traci Melchor. Soltendieck made his eTalk debut Monday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. ET on CTV (visit CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast times).
“As we near the end of our historic, record-breaking 11th season, eTalk is thrilled to welcome Devon to the team,” said Morley Nirenberg, Director of Production/Executive Producer. “With his pop culture acumen, intelligence, huge passion for Canadian stories, and diverse experience in both entertainment and news, Devon is a perfect addition to the eTalk family.”
“This is an opportunity of a lifetime, and I am honoured to be representing eTalk,” said Soltendieck. “It’s a privilege to work with such a talented and successful team, and I can’t wait to begin this new chapter in my career.”
Approaching a decade of national TV and radio experience, Soltendieck has been part of several award-winning Canadian productions since beginning his television career at the age of 18. At MuchMusic, Soltendieck spent several years as the host of Much News, Live@Much, the annual MMVAs, and a highly rated weekly national radio countdown show. In 2010, he moved from entertainment to the world of broadcast news, becoming an anchor and reporter for CP24, Toronto’s only 24-hour news network. In addition to his new role with eTalk, viewers can also catch Soltendieck as the host of Pop Quiz, the new fast-paced, pop culture testing game show set to premiere on E! this fall.
Devon joins Canada’s number-one entertainment team, which over the past decade has written a recipe for success by highlighting Canadian content and providing Canadian context to international entertainment news. Over the past 11 seasons, eTalk has taken the lead in supporting home-grown productions, talent, and Canadian events across the nation, promoting Canadian stars of arts, entertainment, music, fashion, and sport.
