Round double sided carving of a deer hunt with relief carving to both sides depicting horse back riders in pursuit of deer under pine trees in a rocky landscape, the reverse depicting a more serene view of resting horses at foothills of cloudy mountainous region. In the year 1568, Joachim von Poschinger relinquished his hereditary title of burggraeve to take charge of a dilapidating glass factory in the Bavarian forest. Generations later, a legacy of world renowned glassmakers continued within the region. European and Russian imperials and dignitaries patronized the incomparably skilled fabricators. One of these artists, George Carl von Reichenbach, became the stallworth of early twentieth century glass design. Selkirk Auctioneers is pleased to offer three sets of this well documented gilt and embellished stemware. Designed in 1906 at the height of the Secessionist movement and featured at the Bavarian Jubilee Exhibition in Nuremberg, these multicolored bejeweled examples have been documented in the archives of the Dusseldorf Museum and were also included in the official memorandum Bavarian Glass in Munich 1913. This “Byzantinischen Glaser” design is well chronicled by Christiane Sellner for Passauer Glasmuseum in the catalogue Das Bohmische Glas 1700-1950, BAND V, Jugendstil in Bayern und Schlesien, pp. 37-39, as well as countless other same genre literature.
