Introduction 9

I felt a introspective bicycle ride through San Francisco would reignite my lost love for my hometown. Amidst dark alleys of hard feelings, I venture out with a wanderlust for San Francisco’s finest. Following loosely a heart-shaped route, I let my senses lead the way. Entertained by the colors, smells, dishes and characters that make this city unique. I hope to capture my favorite artifacts that evoke a warm human experiences.

My Sanctuary Golden Gate Park miles traveled: 75 current emotion: #atpeace

14 I love walking through Golden Gate Park. In many ways, it has grown to become a sacred place to me—a place where I can talk with God. This natural oasis from all of life’s worries. The diversity in plant and animal life provides nourishment to the body and replenishment to the mind. During my wanderings throughout Golden Gate Park, I just focus on the intake of high quality air and letting go and letting God. This is the place where I can honestly and openly clear my head from all of life’s distractions. Golden Gate Park measures out to more than 1,000 acres, and has stood as a symbol of natural beauty. In the beginning, ¾ of the park was covered in ocean dunes, but were soon blanketed with various tree plantings. By 1875, the area bloomed with close to 60,000 trees, such as the Blue Gum Eucalyptus and the Monterey Pine. Four years later, 155,000 trees were placed over 1,000 acres of land. Golden Gate Park attractions: the Japanese Tea Garden the San Francisco Botanical Garden at Arboretum, The De Young Museum, Academy of Sciences, Shakespeare’s Garden.

Promise Bridge Golden Gate Bridge miles traveled: 356 current emotion: #hope

26 The Golden Gate bridge, although once painted orange, is more warm with red tones that signify life, as it connects people and ideas. The bridge is a deep symbol of growing pains and milestones in my life. From one of my youngest memories as a teenager undergoing a spiritual fasting, walking across the entire bridge on an empty stomachâ€” challenging and strengthening my spirit. Followed by a quarter mid-life crisis in my late 20’s, leaving me heavy hearted with burden of disappointment and hurt. I thought about jumping off. Today the bridge offers more promise and hope because I made the wise decision of going back to school and starting all over. A career in to graphic design was the best decision of my life and I have never been more excited about the future.

Love & Haight Upper/Lower Haight miles traveled: 767 current emotion: #munchies

40 If I need a visual pick-me-up from the dullness of a drab day, I can always rely on Haight street to give me the doses of color and creativity. Upper haight is an attraction for tourists, bohemians, and fashionistas. While Lower Haight is a slower paced version of with more focus on neighborhood gems like Toranados for beer or Upper Playground for art and fashion merged nicely. Growing up, Haight street was filled with all the provisions for a “proper” picnic on Hippie Hill. The close location to the park made it ideal for any kind of “run”. The pizza by the slice and delicious crafted cocktails and bar conversations filled the streets along Haight street. Now as an adult, I still visit personal favorites like Amoeba, Alembic and Shoe Biz because San Francisco has so much exclusive creations.

Wandering through Upper/Lower Haight street are some of my places for inspiration. The pockets of art found on the street—blended/married so beautiful with the urban landscape. There is so much self-expression felt on the streets of San Francisco. It is truly enjoying the little things in life that make it worth enduring all of life’s burdens. Pleasure in the little things make the memory more rich and unforgettable.

Ocean Meets Land Fort Mason

stop FOUR:

miles traveled: 24 current emotion: #inspired

52 Fort Mason faces toward the San Francisco bay and is an magical stretch of green and blue—where ocean meets land. This is the place where the beauty of the city and nature do a dance. Where people come together to share their love for living. The sloping cliffs and forests of Eucalyptus trees provide endless views of the city and the creative juices flow. During one visit to Fort Mason festival pavilion, I was welcomed by the West Coast craft fair. Everywhere I looked, there was something about the color and energy that screamed to be photographed. Throughout the process of my soul search, I am reconnecting with my love for San Francisco.

Not buying everything in sight, I had to exercise so much self-control at the West Coast Craft Fair at Fort Mason this fall. There were so many beautiful colors and well-crafted home and body items. It was inspiring to be in the presence of so many creative and ambitious people that are focused and are not afraid to follow their hearts—patiently.

Roaring Hills Dolores Park miles traveled: 24 current emotion: #daydreaming

66 Dolores Park is a teenage favorite hang-out spot for me and my goons. The view of the city and the rolling hills of grass, while toking on medical cannibus. This was a personal place of meditation and escape when I was growing out of adolescence and into young-adulthood. Looking back I can’t imagine how I would have turned out differently if I hadn’t grown up in such a culturally rich and naturally diverse city. Returning back to the rolling hills of the roaring past, I reflect on how much I have survived and grown. Although, I still work hard and play hard (as per dad’s suggestion) now I am more patient with myself and achieving my goals. Life is slowing down and it’s actually comforting to know that I have more time to work on myself and helping others. I lay in the lush grass of Dolores Park daydreaming of the bright future that lays ahead.

69 Dolores Park is definitely an ideal spot to people watch with bodies of all shapes, sizes and energies occupying a single plot of grass together in peace. I always found this to be where the sun would shine.

Guilty pleasures Japantown miles traveled: 1,524 current emotion: #sweetness

76 What are your guilty pleasures? I know when you get those culinary cravings, I find comfort knowing I live in San Francisco—a mecca of food, culture and art. My guilty pleasures start with a sweet tooth and end with some street art. Because of the overwhelming options of foodie delights in the city, I decided to just focus on my most recent delicious discoveries. I started with one of my favorite neighborhoods to get a sugar rush—Japantown. The vibrant colors and sweet smells takes my mind and taste buds to another time and place as I space out and geek out on the many, many finds in the stores and restaurants of Japantown. Beyond the food and shopping there are also karaoke bars and the famous Kabuki theatre to keep your guilty pleasures busy.

Sleeves up Corona Heights miles traveled: 12,395 current emotion: #determination

88 Funny how life works sometimes. I never considered that the last stop of this soul search would end at Corona Heights. The view from the top offers a 360 degree view of the city and sky opens up, as the hills roll to the end of the horizon. The brazen red rocks jut out and creates a desert feeling—transforming you into another place. Although I am a San Francisco native, I still am finding new pockets and perches in the city that look and feel like something out of a story book. A beautiful blend of heaven and earth merge where the city and the sky kiss. I get lost in the view and in my thoughts. Looking down upon the city, I can feel the creative energy of its inhabitants pulsate and resonate a vibration of hope. As I look down at my hometown, I roll up my sleeves and mentally get ready for the challenges ahead. Without fear, I can face the future with comfort knowing there is light and peace amidst the darkness.

WANDERLUST san francisco This project started out as a simple idea and grew into a beautiful journey of appreciation—expanding my mental lenses to the intrigue in the mundane. Creating this book pushed me out of my comfort zone and nudged me into a new but familiar space to create and explore. I not only learned my strengths and weaknesses as a graphic design student, a cyclist but as a resident/native of San Francisco. I now have a new lust for spending the time to get to know the city more intimately with my camera.
