Rotary Club of Collingwood helping more cats The Georgian Triangle Humane Society (GTHS) is grateful to be the recipient of a grant that will allow them to help more homeless cats and kittens in the community this year. The $5000 grant provides the animal shelter with the ability to purchase state of the art stainless steel kennels for one of their feline quarantine rooms. The new kennels will be a benefit both to the sheltered cats and the numerous volunteers at the GTHS. “Working with high quality equipment makes our job so much easier. The cages are simple to open and clean, which eases the physical strain from repetitive work. In addition, the cats are less likely to get sick allowing us to find them loving homes in a shorter period of time.” says Karen Fawcett, volunteer cat care technician with the GTHS for over 3 years. “Last year we helped over 1000 homeless animals, 650 of which were cats and kittens. While these abandoned cats and kittens are in quarantine we strive to keep them happy and healthy while preparing them for adoption.” stated Sonya Reichel, executive director for GTHS. “These kennels help us improve that process.” The GTHS is thankful for the continued support from individuals, businesses and clubs like The Rotary Club of Collingwood. Relying solely on donations, this grant will make a lasting impact to their efforts in animal welfare. Visit www.gths.ca for more photos of the project or to view the current animals for adoption at the shelter. Submitted by: Sonya Reichel

Duntroon Highlands Golf Club has been family-owned & operated since 1986 when Dalton Sampson had a vision to build a golf course on land that he once farmed. With the help of a good friend who was a Golf Professional, the two designed the course layout you see today. Dalton’s two sons together with their partners, helped complete the project over the next few years with the back nine opening in August of 1988.

Meet the Team: Janet Lougheed, Debbie Sampson, Tony Rubes, Class A Professional, PGA of Canada, Grant Sampson, John Marshall, Director of Golf Operations, Norm Sampson & Chef Tim Knorr (not pictured: Andrew Warrington, Class A Professional, PGA of Canada)

The club is located only 15 minutes from Collingwood on the southwest end of Blue Mountain, boasting spectacular views, well-manicured fairways and challenging greens. Duntroon Highlands Golf course is designed from level to rolling and open to tight. Water surfaces were created for play on 12 holes and magnificent maple trees line many fairways. The course has developed over the years from very basic to one of the best maintained golf courses in the Georgian Triangle area attracting beginner and experienced golfers. The addition of Tony Rubes, PGA Head Golf Professional, brings new instructional programs for adults and juniors offered throughout the season. Recently a new, premier driving range & short game practice facility was built. The members and guests appreciate that it is very private and tranquil with fantastic views, setting it worlds apart from other driving ranges close to roads and traffic. The licensed clubhouse with lounge area, outdoor patio and Highland Grill offer a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy Après Golf. A fully stocked pro shop offers a variety of name brand golf wear and accessories. Located near the first tee is a complete warm up area including individual practice nets with complimentary range balls and putting green. Duntroon Highlands employs approximately 20 full/part time staff on a seasonal basis. Debbie Sampson describes the Duntroon Highlands Golf experience as “welcoming - our guests enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and friendliness of the staff”. Over the years the business has seen continued progression, from course improvements to hosting weddings and special events. Scenic surroundings, exquisite meals and the impeccable services from attentive staff make any event special at Duntroon! Duntroon Highlands is making certain to continue Dalton Sampson’s legacy.

Improper attic insulation and ventilation lead to mould, ice dams and damaged shingles. While you are repairing your roof is the time to upgrade your insulation to ensure your new roof lasts for years. He believed in working hard, enjoying camaraderie with staff and guests and creating a great overall golf experience. When asked about any lifechanging experiences that put them on their current path of success, the Sampson family stated “it was something we all agreed to do to help Dalton fulfill his dream”. Duntroon Highlands Golf Club strives to provide a well maintained course at an affordable price! This year they are celebrating thirty years of great golf on the Escarpment by bringing back Monday Madness -18 holes of golf for only $30. Written and photographed by Bryan Davies

Creating memories at the beach

How to choose the right BBQ

Pinecrest Cottages on River Rd. kicked off the “first weekend of the summer” by hosting hundreds of people that flocked to the sandy shores for some fun in the sun. They even brought in the Georgian Life PHOTO•BOOTH on Saturday night to capture instant memories for the guests, as well as anyone that walked by on the street! The Electric Elements Festival took place on Sunday at Beach Area 1, making Wasaga Beach one of Canada’s biggest May 2-4 parties! Pinecrest has 11 cottages to choose from, just a short walk to all the action at the main end of Wasaga Beach. They can be contacted at 705-429-7236 or for more information: www.wasaga.com/pinecrest Photos: Georgian Life PHOTO•BOOTH | Story: Selena Blais

There’s nothing better than spending a warm summer evening on the deck, cooking and enjoying a delicious grilled meal with friends and family. That’s why choosing the right barbecue is such an important decision. When you initially begin searching for a barbecue, it can be a little overwhelming with all the styles, models and ways of cooking to choose from. Here are some helpful tips to help you pick out the perfect barbecue for your family! Just like when buying a car, barbecues range from luxury models and family friendly models to simple portable models and propane models. By having a wide variety of options, it can be overwhelming, but also a good place to start assessing your needs. Here are some questions you should consider before purchasing: 1. Do you normally use your barbecue for entertaining a crowd? If so, surface real estate is a major consideration. You will want to look for a barbecue that has a few more square inches of grill and maybe a side burner as well. A warming rack would be an added bonus to keep all your cooked food at a reasonable heat while the rest of the meal is being prepared. 2. Do you use your barbecue for family picnics? If so, speed is a very important factor. Consider looking for a barbecue with a temperature gauge and a side burner. Creating an efficient outdoor kitchen helps too. 3. How often do you actually use your barbecue? Some people barbecue daily, others as little as a couple times a month. If you answered a lot, a key consideration for daily users would be durability, maintenance and fuel. You will need a barbecue that has heavy duty construction, and gas and propane are the easiest fuels. A gas barbecue may be more reliable for long, even heat. 4. What type of food do you most often cook using a barbecue? Steak is a popular item and for any neighborhood barbecue master, how he/ she grills their steak is the basis of their reputation! For steak lovers, high heat is the main consideration. You need a barbecue that has enough cooking surface to finish off the steak and a lower heat option to grill it to perfection, after the initial searing. For burgers and hot dog lovers, the key to success is to have two heat zones – one for searing and one to adjust proper temperature and avoid overcooking.

HOLIDAY When cooking seafood and vegetables, you will need more than one heat zone and lots of grilling space. Make DECORATING sure that your cooking zone is non-stick or that you oil your grates thoroughly. And, if youAT love roast chicken on the STARTS grill, a rotisserie is a must! Adding a smoker box is also a convenient way to HOME get that special summer flavor. Cleaning your barbecue is also very important. Make sure after you are done cooking, you burn away the leftover bits of food and grease from the grills. Investing in good quality cleaning tools, such as a stainless steel grill scraper and extra-large scouring pads can improve the quality of your grilled food and help your grill last longer. It’s very important to spend some time realistically assessing your needs and then deciding your affordable price range before you shop. There are enough different styles and features that you can certainly find a good fit for your family’s needs within your budget. What are you excited to get on the grill this summer? Let our experts help you decide on what barbecue is best for you! Shopping for custom picture framing

by Margot Nicolson

Here are ten things to consider when shopping for custom picture framing: 1. KNOW YOUR STYLE - Give your framer a little info on what else you have in your home or space where the art is going to hang. Do you prefer a modern and clean look, more traditional or an eclectic mix? 2. BE OPINIONATED, BUT ALSO OPEN-MINDED - We know you came here for our advice, but the first thing we will likely ask you is if you had anything in mind for the piece. We really want to know your ideas. We might agree or we might push you to go a little farther and imagine something even greater than you initially thought. It’s a collaboration.

Boat Repairs & Alterations • Boat Storage & Dockage Haul-out facilities for boats up to 55 feet • Chandlery Proudly Family Owned & Operated Since 1933

103 Bayfield St. Meaford (2 minute walk to downtown) 519-538-1940 • 1-877-864-1552 richboats@bellnet.ca • www.meaford.com

3. CONSIDER THE SPACE - Your art can be dressed up or dressed down. Something going in the kitchen would be framed differently than the same piece going over the fireplace. Do you want to make a big statement or play it cool? 4. CELEBRATE DIVERSITY - Sometimes people ask us for a black frame only because every other frame in the room is black. Trust us. They won’t notice that all your frames are the same color. People will notice how amazing your art looks with the perfect frame in the perfect color. Don’t be afraid to mix it up. 5. YOU LEARNED IT ALL IN ART CLASS 101 - Line, shape, color and texture are the fundamentals of art and the things we’re identifying in your piece to make frame suggestions. The right frame will highlight one or more of these aspects. We’re going for that “It looks like it was made just for this piece of art” moment. 6. SIZE MATTERS - Part of our job is making sure the frame is strong enough to support everything going inside of it. Don’t get upset if your tiny thin frame dreams are crushed. We just want everything to be safe and last a long time on your wall because.... 7. GOOD FRAMING LASTS A LIFETIME....OR EVEN LONGER - What we’re framing today will very likely be an heirloom for your kids or grand-kids. We always recommend the best preservation museum quality mat boards and UV protective glass. You wouldn’t be framing it if it wasn’t important to you, so let’s take the best care possible. 8. FIND THE LOVE THAT LASTS A LIFETIME - If we’ve narrowed down the design to a couple options and you can’t decide which frame to go with, remember you will be looking at this piece every day. Go with the frame that will bring you joy and make your heart sing instead of just go “meh”. 9. BUDGET - We’ll always show you what we think works best with the art first. If it doesn’t fit your budget, we can adjust the design. Keep in mind that you’re going to be looking at this art for a long time. Going with what you really love can actually save money since you won’t want to re-frame it down the road. 10. CONGRATULATE YOURSELF - How often in life do you get to buy a product that’s completely custom-made? You’re not getting a cookie-cutter mass produced thing. You’re buying a one-of-a-kind hand-crafted item. Skilled hands are going to take care and make sure it’s done just so. Enjoy the moment. You deserve it.

L. Patten & Sons specializes in custombuilt homes and chalets in and around the Georgian Bay area. Let over 50 years of experience building custom homes work to build you the home of your dreams.

The focus of his business is every aspect of detailing. Tim provides complete packages but can also clean each component separately, should the customer require it. This could include waxing, polishing, scratch removal, and recovering the appearance of highly worn materials from aluminum to steel. Tim works on cars, bikes, boats and commercial vehicles.

Contact Jerry Patten 705.444.6186 info@lpattenandsons.ca | www.lpattenandsons.ca

Another large part of his business is tire sales, also mounting, and balancing. Tim also does some restoration and consignment of vintage vehicles. Since his business is customer focused, demand determines where the business goes, beyond detailing. One of the biggest challenges in growing any business is finding good help. Tim, at the moment a sole proprietor, is always looking for someone who is hard working, good with customers, and passionate about cars. Tim states he is “very excited about the opportunity to serve my customers and this is where I spend all of my time and energy”. He is highly motivated to make Creemore Auto Detailing one of the best in the area, and proud to be serving the Clearview area providing value to his community. One word his friends and business associates use to describe him is “ambitious”. Two business mentors encouraged him through the challenges that he first experienced when growing his business, Corey Finkelstein and Laurie Copeland. Both have a strong track record as successful and supportive business owners in Creemore. Creemore Auto Detailing will make your vehicle sparkle! Tim does more than wash, wax and shampoo, he works his magic to make your car, truck or bike look years younger. Having just moved to a new, larger location at 197 Mill Street in Creemore, he offers a long list of services to rejuvenate your tired vehicle. cad-georiganlife.pdf 1 11/23/15 4:31 PM Written and Photographed by Bryan Davies

The songs & stories of Sean McCann On April 15th, Theatre Collingwood presented singer/song writer Sean McCann at The Historic Gayety Theatre. Previous member of Canadian iconic band Great Big Sea, Sean’s concert on this particular night was something quite different. In keeping with Theatre Collingwood’s goal of presenting “great stories, well told”, this was not just an evening of enjoyable music, but the artist was also very honest about his own personal struggles with addiction and sexual abuse. Theatre Collingwood will continue to tell us “great stories” as they present their 2016 Summer Theatre Festival of five plays, and then finish the year off in the fall with two more one-night-only shows. 6 Hours of Gibraltar - The race to empower women and children Join us for the 4th annual 6 Hours of Gibraltar mountain bike relay on July 9th, 2016. This event boasts an amazing private mtb course, and a fun festival-like environment – all for a great cause! All proceeds go to My Friend’s House, a safe place for women and children that need to escape abusive situations. You can participate in the relay race as a solo athlete, a team of four, or a corporate team of eight. This event is suitable for all skill levels and last year saw racers registered from 8 yrs – 72 yrs old navigate the 6km, moderate skill level private mountain bike course. And, as always, your team can be male, female or coed and the race is open to children and adults. For pricing information, please check out the Race Info/Links tab. “My Friend’s House volunteer Board must raise over $200,000 each year to maintain service and there is no way they can do this on their own. 6 Hours of Gibraltar is a significant event because not only does it help us maintain service, it allows us to raise awareness about violence against women and the services My Friend’s House provides. We can’t thank the organizers and participants enough for helping us out in such a big way.” – Alison Fitzgerald, Executive Director of My Friend’s House. This year our fundraising goal is $150,000.00, all of which will be donated to My Friend’s House. A full value consideration – T Shirt, Grab Bag, Prizes, Medals are provided for one and all. Morning coffee is provided by Ashanti Coffee Collingwood, and lunch is provided by Pita Pit. About My Friend’s House: Serving the Georgian Triangle for more than 20 years, My Friend’s House is a non-profit organization providing emergency shelter and counseling services to abused women and their children escaping violence in their personal relationships. Our crisis workers provide service to more than 600 women annually through their residential and counseling programs, and respond to 1,500 crisis calls each year. Come join in on the fun and support the cause. A cocktail reception to celebrate new office for BDO Collingwood On Tuesday May 17th, the partners and staff of BDO Collingwood hosted an open house, welcoming nearly 200 clients, friends, and community partners to their new location at 40 Huron Street. It was a marvelous affair that was enjoyed by all, and it was great to see so many laughing, smiling faces from around the community. Everyone was welcome to come in, socialize and explore BDO’s new home. There was an abundance of delicious appetizers and beverages... and the Georgian Life PHOTO•BOOTH was there with lots of props to accessorize with. Heather Johnston, office managing partner of BDO Collingwood, said a few heartfelt words of appreciation to those assembled, and Collingwood Mayor Sandra Cooper also spoke briefly and gave a nice dedication before the official cake cutting took place. It was a lively and social Tuesday evening in Collingwood that is not soon to be forgotten by those who attended. Photos: Stefanie McManus and Georgian Life PHOTO•BOOTH | Story: Selena Blais

Grand opening highlighted “life at the Anex” Built in 1884, the historic and architecturally significant Victoria School Annex is one of Collingwood’s designated heritage buildings. It serves as the inspiration and heart of “The Anex,” a one-of-a-kind community, offering a wonderful way to downsize without compromising on many things people associate with moving from a larger home. The exclusive nature of the development; just 18 residences, within a heritage-designated site; residents will be part of small, exclusive, residential community, which to many is a far more attractive living arrangement than a high-density condo development. The developers are happy to work with purchasers to customize floorplans to their specifications, to ensure the suites meet the customer’s unique needs. Because of the generously sized plans, downsizers won’t have to compromise on living space, nor will they have to do without their own private green space, since many of the suites offer private, fenced-in yards. The elegantly designed condominium freehold towns and semi-detached homes offer modern features, finishes and conveniences, perfectly suited for a lifestyle in Collingwood. Gorgeous architectural features are offered, such as cathedral ceilings, open plans, fireplaces and main floor bedrooms not typically found in condominiums. The coach house units boast 2000 square feet all on one floor, including an elevator. Minutes from your doorstep, The Anex offers convenience; just a short walk from downtown to key amenities such as grocery, dining, library, banking. An endless array of activities and amenities await you. The maintenance fees cover snow removal, landscaping, etc. The Sales Office held their Grand Opening on May 7th. Visit them at: 14 Gun Club Rd., Collingwood. For more info call 1-844-436-2639 or take a look at the website www.theanex.ca. With only 18 residences available, this is a rare opportunity that won’t last. Photos of opening: Dave West Photography | Info: Tom Flanjak

these local businesses can help! Try no-cost and low-cost cooling tips in your home (NC) A lot of money is spent on the energy needs of our lifestyles, but did you know that Ontarians spend the majority of their energy dollars controlling the temperature of their home? In the summer, this means keeping it cool, so before cranking up the air conditioning, try a few alternatives first. Even if you’re using air conditioning, you’ll use less and that will lower your electricity use. Here are some helpful guidelines from Hydro One:

Draw the curtains on heat In the morning, open windows to let cool air in. Then close them, and draw your blinds or drapes during the day. Your home will retain much of the cool morning air. Let fans move the air Ceiling fans help cool down your home. They don’t use much electricity and can help reduce the need for air conditioning. Make sure ceiling fans blow air downwards in summer. Cool down your menus too One of the easiest things you can do to conserve energy and keep your house cool is to avoid using appliances that heat up the home. In the summer, use the barbecue and include more cold foods and salads in your menu. Try not to use major appliances in the middle of the day. The real problem may be humidity Humid homes feel hotter. Use exhaust fans in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry areas to expel the air directly outside (not into walls or attics). Avoid air-drying clothes in the home and don’t store firewood inside. Check around the house Examine the caulking and weather stripping around your windows and doors. People tend to think this is a winter preparation, but it is just as useful in the summer to ensure that you keep the cool air in. If you have a window air conditioning unit, clean or replace the filter monthly. Dirty filters may restrict air flow and reduce efficiency. Turn it off Lights, appliances and home electronics use a lot of power and give off heat. During the summer, it’s more important than ever to turn them off when you aren’t using them. You’ll save energy twice. Additional tips are available at: www.HydroOne.com/SaveEnergy www.newscanada.com

The sweet taste of spring The Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival is a fundraiser which supports needs within the community. All proceeds from this one day event are offered to schools, children’s music programs, library support, arena and community hall projects, girl guides and scouts, as well as helping many other projects where other financial sources are not available. Many volunteers, hours of planning, and behind the scenes effort goes into preparing for this day. For many ex-Elmvalites and Georgian Bay Cottagers, the Festival Day develops into a home-coming weekend. What a great time to visit with friends and families as well as have a fun day at the Festival! We thank all our volunteers for their efforts in putting this day together. It is this selfless group who make the Festival possible; the planning committee who meet every month for 10 months, the men, women and children who tirelessly participate each year on Festival Day; the local businesses and organizations who donate so much, such as parking space, flowers, prizes etc. Sincere thanks to our Sponsors and Partners whose financial support contributes to the success of our great Festival. The weather was phenomenal, and attendance was spectacular with record crowds. Many thanks to all our dedicated volunteers, vendors, local businesses, residents, visitors and Springwater Township for their continued partnership along with our local maple syrup producers. Without you we could not savour the sweet taste of success. Photos: mycollingwood.ca | Story: www.emsf.ca

Grandma Lambe’s

BUSINESS PROFILE

Serving fresh food and good times, Grandma Lambe’s has been open for over forty years in the Meaford area. Started by “Grandma” Lambe herself, Grace Lambe, they sell homemade deserts and homegrown produce. The shop carries gluten free foods, gift baskets, kitchenware, preserves, sauces, cider, condiments, fruits, decor, giftware, meat pies, fruit pies, tarts, cookies, cheeses, maple syrup, and local gourmet foods. Throughout the seasons, you can find fresh fruits and vegetables at Grandma Lambe’s. They’re displayed outside the store, enticing enough for anyone driving down Highway 26 to stop by and buy a bushel of apples. Inside the store is a market, where the staff is busy baking fresh pies. You can smell the apple pies baking in the oven when you set foot in the store, and that’s the feel Grandma Lambe’s is trying to achieve.

The store features a delicacy of homemade treats and comfort food, like jams, jellies, apple cider, and maple syrup. Any of their products make excellent gifts for someone who loves that homemade touch. The deserts are homegrown as well: the fresh baked pies are made daily. The pies, always made from a secret Lambe family recipe that has been handed down through generations. While they produce lots of pies a day, all of them are still made with that same recipe. A small, family-run local business, Grandma Lambe’s always welcomes visitors with a smile and kind-hearted service. The shop has an old-time country feel that is authentic to the Southern Georgian Bay area. There’s a homey and cozy atmosphere that is very welcoming. The business is a family affair with three generations of Lambes working in the store or on the farm all year. The shop has been so successful in part due to the loyal customers that have been visiting for the last forty years. Local support is what keeps the town of Meaford, and Grandma Lambe’s, great places to shop. Visiting Grandma Lambe’s is an experience most locals and tourists of the area put on their list. The shop is an adventure in itself, strolling through the displays filled to the brim with fresh food, deserts, gifts, and knick knacks. Grandma Lambe’s has two locations: one just outside of Meaford on Highway 26, this location is open 362 days a year. The other location is north of Chatsworth on Roads 6 & 10, which is open May-October. Written by: Amina Bejtic Georgian Life • June 2016

Going into business at a young age

Life transition planning... what is it really all about?

Students in grades 7 and 8 at Connaught Public School held a business fair. We’ve got some pretty cool entrepreneurs in our community. Well Done! Photos/Story: mycollingwood.ca

Recently I was asked to speak to a group about financial planning. I then asked for clarification of the topic. I asked what she meant by “financial planning”. The person replied “you know, what you do.” Financial Planning is such a broad topic for discussion. It’s kind of like saying someone is a doctor… to which I reply, of what? There are general practitioners and specialists... I think Financial planning is the same in that there are so many different approaches to it, and depending on the objectives of the discussion many outcomes can happen. As for someone who is a financial planner, our approach at Team Approach Planning is helping people understand that all transitions in life may have some financial impact and consequence. Helping people better understand what the impact may be on them specifically, gives them a sense of security. After all that’s why people meet with and discuss their financial plans with professionals, to get a sense of security, knowing they are doing the right things to get the right result. Life is full of change. Some of it good and some of it bad. It’s how we handle our circumstances that makes the difference. We can’t always predict the future but we can prepare for it. So life transition planning is about identifying possibilities and finding solutions to deal with them. It’s about asking the hard questions that no one wants to talk about or think about but are glad we do. So when the passing of a loved one happens, there is a plan in place and we all know what to do. We know who will be the executor and estate trustee, what arrangements and last wishes were to be honoured. We’ll know financially where the income will come from and the assurance that we can stay in our own world. In a nut shell, how we do that is “Life Transition Planning.” There are happy transition events too, like having children and watching them grow and providing for their future education. I hope you are as lucky as I am to have grandchildren. Another summer and another year older. Where does the time go? Have a great summer! Brian A.
