North SantiamCanyon 2016-17 Calendar Featuring the Stunning Imagery of Dynamic Photography

This calendar was made possible by the collaboration of many local groups, and the generosity of the contributing photographers. We hope you enjoy your time in the North Santiam Canyon, and that all of your memories are as beautiful as the nature around us. Cover Image: Coffin Mtn Fire Lookout by Dynamic Photography

Title: Salmon Falls by Debbie Johnston/Fifth Street Fotography

Facebook: FifthStreetFotography

www.fifthstreetfotography.com

After meandering down the North Fork River, the crystal blue waters from Opal Creek cascade over Salmon Falls, located in a popular no-fee park about 13 miles northwest of Lyons. The park is day use only and is owned by Marion County, purchased with the assistance of Land and Water funds in order to preserve the outstanding scenic site. It’s the largest waterfall along the Little North Santiam River. The falls drop 30 feet in a pair of side-by-side plunges with a fish ladder bypassing the falls on the far bank. Photography by Debbie Johnston of Fifth Street Fotography.

Title: Little North Santiam River by Joan Gray

northforkfocus@gmail.com One of the most enjoyable activities in the North Santiam Canyon is a simple walk along the river. The shot was taken after a couple days of heavy rain in December 2010, said photographer and Mehama resident Joan Gray. “Living on the Little North Santiam River (the North Fork, locally, as you know...) allows me access to the ever-changing beauty flowing water and patterns and colors and textures. Multiple public parks and campgrounds allow for easy access to areas like this one.

Title: Tandem Falls by Jeffery S. Green/Dynamic Photography

Facebook: Dynamic Photography

http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/2-jeffrey-green

Deep in the Opal Creek WIlderness lies Mark and Dan Falls, which can only be found through “strenuous off-trail hiking,” said photographer Jeff Green. This falls in part of Henline Creek, and is considered part of the “Family Falls”, which includes Steve, Jackie, Ron, and Jerry Falls, and Deanna’s Slide. Routes to these falls are all considered strenuous and for experienced hikers only. An easier family hike ends at Henline Falls, which is 2 miles round trip and only 200 feet of elevation gain, plus features an abandoned mine from the 1930’s. This image was taken in May of 2015.

Title: Detroit Lake by Zak Stone Photography

Facebook: Zak Stone Photography

www.zakstonephotography.com

Detroit Lake not only offers spectacular boating, fishing and swimming, but offers visitors access to expansive hiking trails. This image was taken from Hall Ridge, a mountainous area that towers over the northern shore of the lake, near Tumble Creek. It offers views of Piety Island, Mount Jefferson and the surrounding Cascade Mountain Range. Photographer Zak Stone is a Salem-based photographer and video blogger. “I love being in the outdoors and seeing the raw, hidden beauty that is out there just waiting for someone to explore it and see it.

Title: Early Morning River by Joan Gray

northforkfocus@gmail.com

Hidden along the Little North Fork river lies numerous homes that are snuggled into the pristine wilderness, and feature spectacular views of an ever-changing waterway. On this early morning, photographer Joan Gray of Mehama captured a 30-sec exposure of her own beautiful backyard. It was taken in February of 2013. Across the bank, the warm glow of a neighbors light glows dimly through the trees, which can be a welcoming sight in an area known for it’s seclusion.

Title: Coffin Mtn Fire Lookout by Jeffery S. Green/Dynamic Photography

Facebook: Dynamic Photography

http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/2-jeffrey-green

First built in 1905, the Coffin Mountain Fire Lookout area is located northeast of Detroit Lake and offers stunning views of Three Fingered Jack from its 5771 foot elevation. The 4 hour round trip hike is rated moderate with a 1070 foot elevation gain, said photographer Jeff Green. The facility features a helicopter landing pad, as well as a radio communications tower. Visitors are welcome to visit the surrounding area, but note that the building is actively staffed by the Detroit Ranger District is off limits to visitors. More about this hike can be found at www.theoutbound.com/oregon/hiking/hike-to-coffin-mountain-fire-lookout

Title: Bridges in Mill City by Kimberly Nelmark Photography

Facebook: Kimberly Nelmark Photography

Just a short drive from Highway 22, two iconic bridges stand proud in the City of Mill City. Pictured in the background, Highway 226 crosses the North Santiam River just below Mill City Falls. In the foreground, the Historic Railroad Bridge is pictured, which was formerly used to carry enormous loads of timber from the area’s past logging economy. It now serves as a scenic walking path for locals and visitors and is currently under restoration by the Save Our Bridge Commitee (the SOB’s) who are working to raise the $400,000 needed to complete it’s repair. To donate, visit www.ci.mill-city.or.us/save-our-bridge or call 503-897-2302. Image by Kimberly Nelmark Photography.

Title: Shady Cove Bridge by Jeffery S. Green/Dynamic Photography

Facebook: Dynamic Photography

http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/2-jeffrey-green

Sometimes the most peaceful moments come from exploring the North Santiam Canyon, and this image reflects that feeling. Photographer Jeff Green explains, “I went for a little stroll this morning to get some fresh air. I’ve always loved this wood truss bridge spanning the Little North Fork of the North Santiam River. Totally felt tranquil while I was there!” Jeff Green captured this unique view of Shady Cove Bridge in mid-January of 2015. The bridge is located about 20 miles from Lyons and can be found by following the scenic North Fork Road.

Title: Fall on the North Santiam River by Kimberly Nelmark Photography

Facebook: Kimberly Nelmark Photography

www.kimberlynelmark.com

The North Santiam River starts with dainty streams, way up in the Cascade Mountain Range. At these higher elevations, the river’s proximity to Highway 22 (and numerous parks and pull-outs) make it an easy stop to enjoy the view. This image was captured “somewhere between Idanha and Marion Forks” by local photographer Kimberly Nelmark of Lyons, who has been passionate about her art since she was a child. “While my first love was photography, backpacking was my second. Many of my wildlife and landscape photos were taken while backpacking with my husband and son.”

Title: Thomas Creek by Debbie Johnston/Fifth Street Fotography

Facebook: FifthStreetFotography

www.fifthstreetfotography.com

Looking downriver from beneath Hannah Covered Bridge off of Highway 226, Thomas Creek in the fall is one of the North Santiam Canyon’s most striking celebrant. In the summer, this location is a popular swimming spot. This image was captured by local photographer Debbie Johnston, who lives in Lyons and enjoys spending her time on scenic drives and finding unique architecture like covered bridges and lighthouses. “Photographs are a way of holding on to the memories you love, the things you are and the moments you never want to lose,” said Johnston.

Title: Winter Expedition by Jeffery S. Green/Dynamic Photography

Facebook: Dynamic Photography

http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/2-jeffrey-green

Photographer Jeff Green was on a winter expedition through Upper Canyon Creek Meadow when he captured this “outtake with Three Fingered Jack in the background. The mid-afternoon sun glistens on this day in late February of 2015. In the summer, the Upper Canyon Creek Meadow trail area is full of wildflowers and is popular with hikers, who enjoy the 6.5 mile moderate round trip trek that only gains 900 feet in elevation. But in winter, it fulfills the motto of Jeff Green: Adventure. Exploration. Adrenaline. This is Oregon Landscape Photography.

Title: Mount Jefferson by Jeffery S. Green/Dynamic Photography

Facebook: Dynamic Photography

http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/2-jeffrey-green

This image of Mount Jefferson was captured from Triangulation Peak, which is just a few miles off of Highway 22 between the towns of Idanha and Marion Forks. It’s a favorite route for backpacking, camping, “chillin”, hiking, hunting, photography, rock climbing and snowshoeing. The 4.7 mile round trip trail offers 360 degree views of the Cascade Mountain Range, access to the spectacular Boca Cave and rock climbing opportunities at Spire Rock. Title: French Creek by Jeffery S. Green/Dynamic Photography

Facebook: Dynamic Photography

http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/2-jeffrey-green

This glistening view of French Creek was taken by Jeff Green of Dynamic Photography. Jeff loves spending time exploring the area and seeking out hidden waterfalls. As much as he loves landscape photography and sharing his images, it’s the hard work of the long hikes that keep him coming back for more. “At the end of the day, I have to lose myself out there, in order to find myself,” Jeff is fond of saying. French Creek Trail is a 17.8 mile trail (round trip) located near Detroit Lake that offers scenic views. The trail is rated as difficult and primarily used for hiking.

Title: Guardians of the River by Jack Crocker Photography

Facebook: JackCrockerPhotography The Little North Fork of the Santiam River is known for it’s beautiful geological features, like these massive boulders that have been carved out by generations of water flow. This area of the river is part of Marion County’s North Fork Park and is known for it’s great swimming in the summer. Photographer Jack Crocker said that he was out for a drive and he stopped here because the winter climate meant that he had the place to himself. “Photographing Mother Earth in action gives me a whole new appreciation of the simple beauty that nature provides each of us,” said Jack Crocker.

Above: A spectacuar view of Mt. Jefferson, as viewed from Buck Mountain in the McKenzie Ranger District, located to the southwest of the North Santiam Canyon. “While I was waiting for sunset colors to kick off, I actually didn’t think the clouds looked like they were gonna burst like they did. Sure glad I was wrong on that one,” said photographer Jeff Green. This image was captured in July of 2014.

Special thanks to Jeffery S. Green at Dynamic Photography for contributing numerous images for this project. His work is available for purchase at http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/2-jeffrey-green

Above: Jeffery S. Green, the creator of Dynamic Photography has been an Oregon landscape photographer for a couple of years now, and he is inspired by a deep respect of the great outdoors, which developed over a lifelong passion for fly-fishing Oregon’s beautiful rivers. Jeff grew up in Salem, Oregon and has always embraced the North Santiam Canyon as his own recreational backyard. This self-portrait was taken in April of 2015 on French Creek near Detroit Lake. The original image was intentionally shot slightly underexposed to capture as high percentage of details as possible (a proven technique). While Jeff appears serene here, he said that it was “kinda loud” and required waders & special boots to reach this spot. But, “it was a nice way to cool off!” Left: The drain hole at Lost Lake made a spectacular appearance in the early summer of 2015. While it’s presence has been known for years, it was not commonly known until this year. The drain hole releases water from Lost Lake into depths of the Cascade Mountains, although no one knows exactly where it goes. Jeff Green notes that, “from old photos I found, it appears the hole is growing in size.” There are actully two drain holes on this lake bed - the other is located on the opposite side of the lake. They can only be seen during extremely low water. Lost Lake is located directly off Highway 22 near the top of the Santiam Pass.
