NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE “NEW FLOWER” NATIONAL TEFF RESEARCH LAB TO LAUNCH

ADDIS ABABA TO OPEN AFRICAN AFFAIRS OFFICE

NEW REAL ESTATE MEGA-PROJECTS

Two major Ethiopian agricultural research institutions, the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA) and the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), are partnering together to build a national research lab that will be focused exclusively on the study of teff. Teff is one of Ethiopia’s staple crops, but is grown hardly anywhere else in the world. This state-of-the-art facility, due to open in May, will be used to help develop varieties of teff that have higher yields and are more resilient to environmental changes.

After a meeting with representatives of Addis Ababa’s African diplomatic corps in December, Mayor Takele Uma announced that he would be opening an office within City Hall dedicated to strengthening relations with the city’s many African embassies, as well as with the administrations of capital cities across the continent.

In partnership with foreign investors, the Ethiopian government is developing a series of large-scale real estate projects in Addis Ababa that could change the face of the city over the coming years. The first of these projects to be formally launched is La Gare, a mixed-use development that will be located around the historic downtown train station. When complete, the La Gare project will contain apartment buildings with over 4,000 residences, in addition to a park, office buildings and shopping malls. Other large-scale project are being planned for the Yeka and Entoto neighborhoods.
