JOURNEYS AND SADDLES JOURNEYS AND SADDLES

“Your journey has moulded you for your greater good, and it was exactly what it needed to be. Don’t think you’ve lost time. There is no short-cutting to life. It took each and every situation you have encountered to bring you to the now. And now is right on time.” — Asha Tyson

This is not my first Rodeo. I could drone on and bore you with my past and the accolades we have received… blah blah, fishpaste. The designer of this incredible magazine and I have worked together for decades. Have we excelled? Damn Straight.

Yet, Life has a way of Sticking it to You, and then turning the knife like a bad Rambo movie..

A few years ago, I decided it was time to pivot (I hate that word) and leave print behind as much as I did not want to, but all the signs said it was time. Magazines were dying left, right and centre and apparently a New Dawn had arisen. No longer were the Days of Magazines, where once very few things smelt and felt as good as a warm hard copy of a quality print on premium parchment.

I decided to go into strategic content planning and creation for the industries I love – Travel (Mostly Africa- being my thing) and Wine (The Other Thing I might like too much)

Things were going well until

some Virus named after a beer hit us! My clients left overnight in March 2020. No jokes….when you cannot trade in travel or wine, why would someone write about you? It was selfpreservation time for everyone. But Us Writers and many others were left behind.

That was a lonely time and space. BUT my mate, Jonty and his wife, Tazz, had been dreaming away for years about a Cannabis Content portal and with the Constitutional Change, it truly seemed that the Tide was Turning, here locally and on a global level.

Cannabis was finally taking its rightful part as a redeeming and incredible plant with so many benefits and cures that we still haven’t even touched the surface yet.

I was never a Stoner (I also hate that word) but I partake in the Weed of Knowledge so it seemed like something that would bridge the time over hard lockdown. So began the www. seedinconline.com journey. We started a site and hooked up with Media Online, the reputable database company that sends

out e-zines to the likes of Daily Maverick, 702, Cape Talk and Business Day to name but a few, so we could reach a plausible audience.

And then Things Took Off. So without boring you with the rest, we have now come to Full Circle. Back to lovely print! One of the only arenas that are globally growing in print as opposed to dying, is the cannabis industry. True Story.

Making this magazine, along with my mates, has NOT been a Labour of Love. It has been an absolute blast. If work every day could be like this bring it on. Getting back in the Saddle has been like riding my old horse. A trusted companion and confidante. It has been an absolute pleasure.

So whatever the future holds, welcome to the inaugural print edition of SEED INC. We cannot wait to get your feedback. We are super chuffed with ourselves, to be frank.

We look forward to Growing with you.

ROBBIE STAMMERS TAKES A LOOK AT THE CANNABIS BUZZ FROM SA AND AROUND THE GLOBE

A BILTONG WITH EXTRA VUMMA

Sometimes there are products on the horizon that are too good to be true, especially as a South African! The American equivalent of our favourite snack- Biltong – they call Beef Jerky. A company called BadFish has hit the taste buds with the perfect protein-packed bite with Badfish Extracts’ Reef Jerky. This award-winning jerky is so delicious, you’ll have to hide it from your friends before they set their eyes on it. We do know that Badfish Reef Jerky has been tested by SC Labs (one of the first analytical cannabis testing and certification facilities in the USA), and it’s impossible to have too much of a good thing. We have absolutely no idea how it could be anything short of a culinary masterpiece. Here’s to efficiency and it contains 100mg of THC! Anyone out there who wants to make a SEED INC Biltong brand like this in SA!? We have got your back and marketing!

SETH ROGEN SLAYS (CLAYS) IT

Set Rogen has played some incredible characters and is a huge cannabis advocate, to say the least. His lifestyle brand, Houseplant, has been building a catalogue of functionally fun items since its establishment in 2019. One of those items is its All-in-One Rolling Tray. Crafted from concrete, the sturdy piece features an ashtray, elevated grinder, large rolling surface and a place to store rolling papers. But this time, the hand-poured concrete piece comes in “Jawbreaker,” which has shades of salmon pink, coral, deep beige and light grey. A beautiful concrete design with a large rolling tray, a great grinder, an ashtray, and a paper dispenser...you really can have it all. In one! It’s everything you need for the perfect living room, aside from the couch maybe.

IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY HONEY

As a 9-inch tall bong with 21 Karat gold-encrusted cannabis leaves and crystals, you can see why this bong is so expensive. The mind boggles! It was created by Scott Deppe, the co-founder of Mothership Glass. With over 20 years of experience, Scott is something of a legend in the glass-blowing business. He reportedly said this piece took him over 500 hours to make and to look at the details, we can well believe it. Considering the materials and level of craftsmanship, it’s easy to see how this bong is priced at $100K. If you want to smoke out of some gold, you will need deep pockets.

LET’S PLAY BALL!

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and its players’ union have officially signed a collective bargaining agreement that removes marijuana from the league’s banned substances list and lays out rules allowing players to invest in and promote cannabis brands. The 676-page document contains a number of cannabis provisions—though arguably the most impactful is the removal of marijuana from the list of prohibited substances for players. Players will also be allowed to hold a direct or indirect ownership interest in an entity that produces or sells CBD Products. They can also invest in marijuana companies, as long as the investment is passive and the player’s ownership is less than 50 percent of the business. Marijuana icon and NBA commentator Snoop Dogg weighed in on the policy change, applauding the league for taking steps that would allow players to use cannabis for medical purposes, including as a potential opioid alternative.

THE STORY OF CANNABUCHU

Next time you go for Sundowners, rather get this beverage, which is taking SA by storm! Cannabucha was born in Cape Town in the hills of Constantia. It is a result of passion for the fusion of ancient and modern alchemy. In pursuit of quality and an obsession with eastern fermentation techniques, which we understand to provide exceptional health benefits, particularly to the nervous system and for digestive and gut health, led them on a journey of fermentation from foods to beverages culminated in Cannabucha. Eastern Monks have been making Kombucha for centuries as it is a powerful elixir known to provide longevity and youthfulness. Their blend uses an ancient traditional culturing process and adds their own new Cannabinoid and terpene-infused Elixir. Combining the traditional craftsmanship and quality of a handmade product with cutting-edge extraction and nanotechnology to create a perfectly brewed beverage, with the tang of freshly extracted cannabis terpenes. It is an Invigorating health boost – 100% pure and natural and available at many deli’s and health stores Follow CannaBuchu on Facebook and Instagram or go to www.thepheromonegroup.com for more info

UKRAINE SEEKS LEGALISATION

President Zelensky told the Ukraine parliament they “must finally fairly legalize cannabisbased medicines for all those who need them.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently called on lawmakers to legalize medical cannabis, saying the treatment could provide relief to those in the country suffering from the “trauma of war.” Zelensky made the comments in an address before his country’s parliament. “All the world’s best practices, all the most effective policies, all the solutions, no matter how difficult or unusual they may seem to us, must be applied to Ukraine so that Ukrainians do not have to endure the pain, stress and trauma of war,” he added, according to the news organization. Russia invaded and subsequently occupied parts of Ukraine last year, marking a bloody and costly escalation of the hostilities between the two countries. In April, Reuters, citing a “trove of purported U.S. intelligence documents” that had been published online, estimated that as many as “354,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or injured in the Ukraine war.” As UPI noted, “Zelensky’s support for medical cannabis legalization also remains consistent as evidenced in 2019, during his presidential campaign, when he said it would be ‘normal’ to allow people to access cannabis ‘droplets.’”

CANNABIS CONNOISSEUR & ACTIVIST

M M

organ Freeman is known primarily for his award-winning film work. However, the African American activist links civil rights and cannabis activism frequently.

Morgan is a well-known actor and activist for cannabis. His own background and experiences serve as rich experiences for the same. He frequently also lends his voice to the cause. The journey from birth to here has also been an astounding one. Born into a humble background in the pre-segregation American South, he has become a leading actor in Hollywood. He is also a well-known human rights activist.

Many of his roles have also incorporated aspects of his life and journey – including his latest flicks. These intertwine the financial issues of ageing and of course brief quips about marijuana as a medical cure in “5 Flights Up”.

As one of his favourite sayings incorporates, “The best way to guarantee a loss is to quit.” He has certainly never done that. He is still a prolific screen presence.

WHO IS MORGAN FREEMAN?

While today a well-known actor, Freeman comes from a world far removed from Hollywood. He was born in the pre-civil rights South on June 1, 1937. His mother was a teacher, and his father was a barber who died by the time Freeman was in his early twenties. However, he was mostly raised by his grandmother. Both his parents had to migrate north to Chicago to find regular work. He too had to move north when his grandmother died.

That said, his love of acting and showmanship has always been a core character trait. He

made his acting debut at the age of 9. At the age of 12, he won a statewide drama competition. This allowed him to perform on a radio show in Nashville.

Movies were always a passion for Freeman, even as a young boy. However, he turned down a partial drama scholarship for the Air Force with dreams of being a fighter pilot. When that did not work out, he worked as a radar repairman until the end of his four years.

He then moved out to California. He lived in Los Angeles and San Francisco following his old passion once again. The journey was not easy. He took acting lessons. He also found work in California and in New York in many varied jobs. This included everything from a records clerk to even being a dancer.

By the late ’60s, he began to break into live theatre in New York. His first credited film appearance was in 1971 with “Who Says I Cannot Ride A Rainbow?” He also appeared on TV, including children’s programming of the day. His big screen presence began to assert itself in the 80’s.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Most people know Freeman from his big screen roles. These include Driving Miss Daisy. He also played Sergeant Major Rawlins in Glory. However, his major breakthrough came in 1994 with The Shawshank Redemption. He has been nominated for Academy Awards five times as well as five Golden

Globes. He finally won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Million Dollar Baby at the 77th Academy Awards.

Freeman has also always had an active career far from the big screen. His deep, melodious baritone has led to a great deal of voice-over work for both film and commercial work. He has also moved into executive producing. His best work always has a deeply resonant social theme. Certainly, the movies he is best known for are seminal films in every genre on certain topics. When it comes to race, for example, he has been involved in several films where this is a central theme.

FREEMAN IS MAKING A BEELINE FOR NATURE TOO A HOLLYWOOD LEGEND STEPS IN

Actor Morgan Freeman imports hives and gives the bees a home. Harmful pesticides are killing bees at an alarming rate. Maintaining natural wildlife is one of the pillars of saving our planet. Many insects, such as bees, are overlooked for their contribution to the natural landscape of the world. Crosspollination is when the pollen from one plant get transferred over to the pistils of another. This action allows flowers to mix their genetic information, evolve, and survive in the wild. Without cross-pollination, new plants can’t grow and feed

the wildlife surrounding them. When bees land on a flower, they pick up some of its pollen and then fly to another.

Cross-pollination occurs naturally from the bees transferring particles from one plant to another. With an increase in pesticides used by farmers to ‘preserve’ their crops, every year there is a 40% decrease in surrounding bee populations. Without the insects, humans have to manually cross-pollinate, which is less efficient. One household name, Morgan Freeman, heard about this wildlife crisis and wanted to help. When he’s not in front of the camera, Morgan spends a lot of time on his ranch in Mississippi. He owns a sizeable piece of land, roughly 124 acres large and

wanted to dedicate some of it to saving the bees.

Morgan imported 26 bee hives from Arkansas to his ranch. He works daily to feed the bees a mixture of sugar and water. This is necessary because when the hive moves, the bees lose track of where their food source is. He and his team have even planted bee-friendly plants such as magnolia trees, lavender and clover.

When speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show,

MORGAN FREEMAN AND CANNABIS

Freeman was born in a place and time that was highly segregated, which led to early activism and support of South African freedom in the 1980’s. As an outspoken advocate for civil rights, Freeman has always taken on the cannabis legalization issue as a personal one.

In the United States, in particular, the drug war and racism, along with police violence have long been intertwined. Freeman for one has never shirked this connection. In fact, he has often been a vocal critic of American drug laws for their racial impact.

Freeman has stepped boldly into this discussion and has made many direct comments to the media about police violence.

However, especially since the turn of the century, Freeman has been a vocal advocate for legalization.

When it comes to personal use? Freeman has used cannabis since a severe car accident in 1997 and he has been a long proponent of full cannabis legalization.

Although busy with an enviable career, Freeman is lending his name to the cause. These days, that famous baritone of his is being put directly to the cause. He is narrating specials and doing interviews about why he thinks marijuana should be federally legal and available to all.

His voice is especially important. Why? He is a role model who has both succeeded financially and professionally as well as personally being a cannabis advocate. And further does so in a way that

promotes not only his health but also his career.

In an interview with the Daily Beast, Freeman talked about why he thinks it should be easily accessible to everyone everywhere.

“They used to say, ‘You smoke that stuff, boy, you get hooked!’” Morgan said. “My first wife got me into it many years ago. How do I take it? However it comes! I’ll eat it, drink it, smoke it! This movement is really a long time coming, and it’s getting legs— longer legs.”

Following a serious car accident that nearly killed him many years ago in Mississippi, Freeman shattered various bones including his shoulder, arm and elbow. Despite many long surgeries to repair the nerves, he still has not regained full use of

Morgan said he has a special relationship with the bees. “What I’ve discovered is that I don’t have to put on a bee suit or anything to feed them.” He said, “They have the outfits for people who can’t resonate.”

At the core of Morgan’s new hobby is mutual respect between himself and the insects he cares for. The bees are socially aware enough to understand that he brings the food source and poses no threat. “I’m never gonna get stung,” he said.

his left hand.

He developed fibromyalgia pain in the arm that was crushed in the accident, and to cope with the pain, the 86-year-old Freeman started using cannabis. Common treatments for fibromyalgia are antiinflammatory medications, opioid pain medications and steroids.

“The only thing that offers any relief is marijuana.” Morgan said. “They’re talking about kids who have grand mal seizures, and they’ve discovered that marijuana eases that down to where these children can have a life. That right there, to me, says, ‘Legalize it across the board!’”

He is still a prolific worker and performer whom we should thank for his contribution to global legalization. Go Morgan! SEED INC salutes you!

August is Women’s Month and SEED INC honours and celebrates the accomplishments and roles these women have made and their significant impacts within the cannabis industry.

MYRTLE CLARK

First and foremost, it would be amiss if we did not start with Myrtle.

Myrtle Clarke is a formidable figure within Cannabis. Rising up as an activist following the arrest of herself and her late partner, Julian Stobbs in 2010, Myrtle, continues to bring a human rights focus to the fight for Cannabis legalisation.

Fields of Green for ALL was established in 2013 as a non-profit company to gather evidence toward suing the various government departments involved with Cannabis legislation. The organisation continues to exist to ensure human rights are fully recognised within Cannabis legislation and regulation in South Africa.

Dubbed as the Dagga Couple, Myrtle and Julian took the Trial of the Plant 1.0 to the Pretoria High Court of South Africa in 2017. This landmark case featured their and other voices on how our cognitive liberties are denied when we are punished for making our own decisions.

Although the Trial of the Plant was only part-heard, the Constitutional Court ruled in 2018 that South Africans have the right to grow, possess, and use Cannabis in a private space.

Unfortunately, arrests are ongoing and Myrtle and her team are far from ready to back down.

Taking the message of Fields of Green for ALL to the international stage, Myrtle and her team form part of an international network of like-minded activists.

Holding special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council since 2021, the organisation works mainly within the Commission on Narcotic Drugs - presenting at CND65 & CND66 these past two years.

Myrtle regularly participates in both local and international Cannabis-centred events, conferences, and discussions. These events focus largely on human rights, harm reduction, and protecting those who are most easily marginalised by those seeking to capture Cannabis for themselves.

Myrtle, our Clarke of the Plant, continues to raise our collective voices, so that we may realise Fields of Green for ALL.

LOUISE MAXWELL

Louise Maxwell is a powerhouse in the cannabis sector in South Africa

She was part of a Jehovah’s Witness cult for 30 years, where she studied herself out of it. It was really only after her Uncle and then Grandmother both passed away from cancer that she truly started looking more into severe pain management and though she had been an occasional smoker, she had never thought to look at cannabis. Five years ago, she started studying the herb when she became a traditional healer and now strives to get the truth out about cannabis and de-stigmatise it as much as possible.

In 2019 she was part of the Cannacon team in Durban and was involved in the first cannabis show in May of that year. Louise has also spoken at the Cannabis Expo in both Durban and Gauteng.

She has an in-depth understanding of our growing cannabis economy and focuses on the empowerment of women in this new emerging cannabis market space. Louise is also the founder of two cannabis companies, Women of Weed and The Green Hobbit. Women of Weed is a platform driven by nurturers of the community, entrepreneurs and activists that believe in the full inclusion of the people and full plant freedom. She believes it is a priority to educate not only within the community but to the masses outside of the community regarding law, legislature, products and dosing. An edible expert and events specialist, Louise believes in a transparent and fair culture surrounding cannabis.

AMMON RIGHINI

Ammon is the Brand Developer and Founder of the CannaBucha Company and The Pheremone Group International. This trailblazing entrepreneur is a lover of all things natural and Organic.

In 2013 Ammon was selected to be the Brand Ambassador for Naturalmente BREATHE, the biodynamic and organic Italian skin therapy range and travelled to Tuscany Italy, where she learned about Cold extracted herbal oils as well as vegetal butters. This experience gave her a keen insight into Bioavailability, the powerful effects of essential oils and cold extraction methods.

With this knowledge and passion, Ammon incorporated her experience and knowledge into the extraction of CBD on a legally licensed farm in Malawi.

Ammon’s late husband was the original founder and funder of IKAROS AFRICA which was to be the first licensed medical trials facility at Shitalla Research Centre, testing the viability of feminized strains of Cannabis and CBD in partnership with a Spanish seed company Dina Fem.

Her passion for postextraction product development started with her insight into what was to her, the most transparent demonization of one of the world’s most versatile plants. With sustainability and ethical practices at the top of her list, her desire to create high-end

brands for the discerning consumer was ignited and Cannabucha was born. In 2018, it was launched into various eateries and stores in and around Cape Town.

This original effervescent fruity refreshment was infused with CBD and Cannabis terpenes making the first Canna beverage in SA.

In 2019 Ammon was inspired to make the world’s first CBD and honey-infused Bordeaux blend. This amazing wine was well received and made its way to the USA. The name PHEROMONE hints at the feminine and with yet again the best branding, this wine was sought after in the international markets.

By 2021 Ammon had developed ICE QUEEN, an Organic CBD-infused Gelato in three decadent flavours, which is also a niche healthy brand. With original and innovative ideas, Ammon is one of the most significant minds in the

cannabis industry. Her early engagement in the industry gave her a head start in innovation and operation as high-end lifestyle brands in the retail space and aims to normalize the cannabis industry and reduce stigma with that very important wow factor.

Her dedication to developing high-end brands that are mainstream yet niche has brought her into light that very few cannabis companies have been able to achieve. Adding the sexy sass to her advertising, design and packaging is exemplary and speaks volumes about her ethos and intricate knowledge of the importance of perception and the allimportant brand message.

NAFISA HANSA AND HAWA AMOD

In a society marked by traditional perceptions and stereotypes, two more remarkable women have emerged as pioneers in the cannabis industry.

Nafisa Hansa and Hawa Amod, the dynamic duo behind Cannaporium, shattered barriers and blazed a trail for other aspiring entrepreneurs in South Africa becoming the first to open a cannabis wellness store in 2019.

What led them to this path was their personal struggle with Stage 4 Endometriosis, a debilitating medical condition. Through their own experiences and the transformative power of cannabis oil treatment, they discovered a newfound purpose: to promote the healing potential of this remarkable plant to others facing similar challenges.

Entering the male-dominated cannabis industry was no easy

feat for Nafisa and Hawa. Armed with resilience and determination, they faced numerous hurdles along the way. Gender biases and societal stigmas often created barriers, but the unwavering belief in their mission propelled them forward. As they shared their journey of healing and pain relief, more women began to recognize the potential of cannabis as a wellness aid.

Just as their business started to flourish, the duo encountered unexpected challenges. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic brought with it a wave

of uncertainty, leaving many businesses reeling. However, Nafisa and Hawa refused to let adversity dampen their spirits. They adapted swiftly, implementing safety protocols and embracing e-commerce platforms to ensure continuity of service to their loyal customer base. In the face of adversity, Cannaporium remained a beacon of hope for those seeking natural healing alternatives.

As if the pandemic was not enough, the women were confronted with further adversity when their flagship store in KwaZulu-Natal fell victim to the looting and civil unrest that engulfed the region in 2021. The setback was devastating, but Nafisa and Hawa refused to be defeated. With unwavering determination, they regrouped, rebuilt, and emerged stronger than ever.

The success of Cannaporium Durban served as a catalyst for expansion, prompting the opening of their second store in the scenic Sea Point Cape Town. Cannaporium Cape Town, which is set to celebrate its first anniversary this September, has already made a significant impact in the local cannabis community.

Today, as Cannaporium Durban approaches its fourth anniversary, Nafisa and Hawa reflect on the profound impact their stores have had on countless lives. Patients from all walks of life have returned with stories of healing and pain relief, attributing their newfound well-being to the power of cannabis. The duo takes

pride in the diverse range of cannabis wellness products available at Cannaporium, catering to a myriad of ailments. Moreover, they go beyond just medicinal products, as they also stock hemp clothing and apparel, promoting sustainability and natural living.

SISTER VEE

Sister Vee is a Traditional Doctor who was trained under the Rastafari and isi-Xhosa traditions. She is a 3-times cancer survivor and has been living with rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia since she was 7 years old and since then doctors have told her that she would not make it to age 30, which is normal for child rheumatoid arthritis patients. She recently celebrated her 55th birthday and she says that all praises must go to The Most High and the Cannabis plant for granting her this extra time to complete her works. Her medical team at Groote Schuur hospital also agree that it is only the plant that is “miraculously” keeping her alive today.

She has dedicated her life to bringing Cannabis medicine to the people and was properly persecuted for doing so. Since 1981 she has been arrested and raided 12 times and this was her ‘Passport’ to the majority of prison cells in the country.

She reflects on the silver lining that prohibition has afforded Cannabis Sativa’s integrity in the botanical and medical fields. Her synopsis is that a plant’s innocence and healing capacity

is being seized upon by biosynthetic corporations and that the apothecaries are now going to the ground.

In her opinion, cannabis is the literal bridge between body and mind healing and this is why she teaches that cannabis is the human companion plant as it can nurture humanity in so many different ways. She says no other plant has been so delicately created to serve humanity’s needs mentally, physically, spiritually, medicinally, economically and culturally. Part of Sista Vee’s teachings is that cannabis can help all human beings to achieve greatness in this lifetime.

In her book, Cannabis is the human companion plant you will learn amazing scientific revelations of cannabis medicine as well as how to make her medicine in the comfort of your home by following her step-by-step recipes. It is very important to Sista Vee that at least one person in each household knows how to produce this medicine. The book has 269 scientific citations and covers the basics of the Endocannabinoid system, how to speak to your doctor about this medicine as well as how cannabis medicine affects fertility, pregnancy and childhood diseases.

She discusses the six main Cannabinoids found within the Cannabis plant in detail to offer a better understanding of what this plant can do for human illness. She also addresses mental health, longevity, pain management, blood and bone health as well as the actual consciousness of the plant.

Throughout her book, you will learn how you can heal yourself and your family from virtually any illness with virtually no side-effects. You will learn how Cannabis is the most effective herbal medicine that is already implicated in 678 medical conditions, including mental conditions. You will learn that cannabis medicine can slow down seizures in people suffering from epilepsy and how cannabis has cured every type of cancer it has ever been tested against.

Peter Vogel is the CEO of Leafwire, a cannabis business-focused social media platform known commonly as “the LinkedIn of cannabis.” Peter is a well-known tech start-up entrepreneur in the USA and talks to SEED INC about the changing face of Cannabis and the future of its global rise.

What’s your background and what made you decide to move into the cannabis space?

I’ve been in the tech start-up space for about 20 years and have always been passionate about building companies. I was approached by a friend in a cannabis start-up with a group of investors who had the idea to start Leafwire and they needed someone to run the company. When I started looking seriously into Cannabis, I saw an amazing young industry with such huge potential, I dropped everything, quit my job, and jumped in head-first to start Leafwire’s journey.

28 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com CANNAPRENEURS

What is Leafwire and what is its mission?

We built Leafwire because the cannabis industry needed a safe, Cannabis-focused platform to connect, share news, promote events, find employees and just simply network. Our goal is to build Leafwire to be a LinkedIn-like platform 100% committed to serving the business needs of the Cannabis and Hemp business communities globally.

What impact do you think Leafwire will have on both cannabis companies and those looking for jobs in the industry?

Our goal is to drive the industry forward by helping people connect, get educated, find business partners, find employees and find all of the services and products they need to build successful, socially conscious and equitable companies.

What’s the most challenging experience you and Leafwire have had in the cannabis industry so far?

The pandemic was great for online platforms, but it made fundraising very challenging. We were in the middle of a Convertible Note when the

pandemic hit and investment froze for about 6 months. In order to complete the round, we started a crowdfunding campaign on SeedInvest and are really happy with the progress so far.

We’re already 60% done with the amount required that we need to raise. Crowdfunding is an amazing way for the everyday average person to be able to share in the success of the booming Cannabis industry. Come check it out at - https:// www.seedinvest.com/leafwire/ seed

You seem to have quite a few South Africans on Leafwire already. What are your thoughts on the growth and potential in SA?

I’ve been amazed by the growth all over the world and think South Africa has a huge potential for cannabis to become an integral part of the South African economy. We’d love for more South Africans and citizens of the world to

come join us at Leafwire. We’re an international community.

What do you see the benefits of legalization being for the global economy?

The benefits should be more jobs, better paying jobs, more tax income for states and nations to be used for education and social justice, less people of colour in jail, less incarcerations across the board and hopefully a fairer playing field for people of all socioeconomic levels and races. And of course the medical benefits of Cannabis will create a huge impact on society, especially as people move away from other more harmful substances such as nicotine, alcohol, opiates and others. The reduction in unnecessary death could be huge.

In closing, as an initial tech entrepreneur and now forging ahead with Leafwire and the cannabis boom, what advice can you share with SEED INC readers on how they can achieve their goals?

Look for partners and companies who share similar goals. The Cannabis community is very collaborative and it’s much easier to reach your goals with a team of partners all striving for the same goals. 1+1 is often 3 or 4. And don’t be afraid to ask for help or admit you don’t know something. All of us are flying blind at many points while we’re building our companies and we all need help, over and over again throughout the process.

You were the Head Cultivator at Otis Gardens, located in the lush Hood River Valley, Oregon. Otis Gardens resides in the shadow of the majestic Mount Hood where a glacial spring nourishes hydroponic gardens powered by 100% renewable energy. As the Lead Grower and Head of Cultivation, can you give us insights into the area and what brought you from South Africa to Oregon?

I am just a humble plant cultivator who has been fortunate enough to be able to act upon my skill set and make a career from it and recognition was never anything sought, but it is always appreciated.

I was sourced from another Oregon-established company and offered a position as head of cultivation in New Mexico in their newly set up cultivation facility there. Otis offered an amazing introduction and I am always grateful for that but the opportunity to cultivate in a method more aligned with my personal style, with farms who offer some of the highest quality flower Oregon has to offer, seemed like the best choice to continue refining my skills in the right direction.

We are currently in the last stages of setting up the state-of-the-art facility which will contend as one of the largest organic, indoor cannabis facilities in the US once we are completed.

The facility is based in Las Cruces, New Mexico, which runs along the Rio Grande, just north of El Paso, Texas. The area traditionally supported agriculture in various forms but perhaps most famously for chilli

and more recently Pecan nuts.

Cannabis was made recreationally legal last year and the proximity to Texas has allowed access to vastly more business than was previously predicted. Our plan of offering high quality, affordable, indoor, organic cannabis with the Oregon market experience as well as vertical integration into 5 retail outlets proposes a huge potential to be significantly recognized and appreciated locally.

What brought me and my family over here started with belief from others in me that I never saw in myself, and for that, I’ll always be grateful to my now wife Tracey for nudging my stubborn self in the right direction. This combined with around 18-24 months of applying to job listings in my evenings after work and using any downtime to gain skills that I perceived relevant in any way; from constructing LED lights to understanding and practising new extraction methods (and always endlessly refining my understanding of growing in general). This finally resulted in 3 replies that offered me the

potential of work, if I could get to the locations. Two were in Oregon and the other one was in Colorado, we chose Oregon.

With a huge amount of paperwork and a big dream, 2 adults, one baby and a dog called Iggy made the 32-hour flight to Seattle and began our relocation to Oregon.

You were born and raised in Cape Town. Do you and your family still come back here occasionally and do you have any business interests in SA?

Yes, we most definitely come home as often as we can and I don’t think we plan on stopping as long as we are capable of doing so (although we might disagree on the frequency though). My wife Tracey and I both have family back home as well as places close to our hearts for various reasons.

There are many beaches and desolate fynbos-covered mountains that we spent hours upon building memories and many of the friends and family we shared those amazing locations with along the way. Those are what made us who

we are today, we won’t ever forget that.

Why does Oregon grow some of the best cannabis in the world? Tell me a bit about what makes the area stand out from the crowd.

The new facility is called Iron Lungs and the reason we are going to cultivate cannabis of the highest standard is because of multiple reasons.

Firstly, this is a team process and everyone needs to have an intense understanding of their specific role and how this links to the other processes involved. Communication and a strong team ethic combined with the desire to produce an amazing product have to be present throughout. Our team has been hand-selected from the competitive Oregon market, each proven in selective areas. And behind the humble passionate crew are individuals’ intent to prove themselves and make their marks in the industry.

Secondly, the facility design, the Grow-jo so to speak, is an area which is so innovative that it is constantly being updated

32 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com

into more efficient areas as we continue to understand the unique demands of top-level indoor cannabis cultivation. There is discussion down to where every piece of equipment is placed and if that allows maximum efficiency, without conflicting with other equipment and also allows in-room maintenance with a canopy worth over a hundred thousand dollars of flower, for instance.

And finally passion, we all share intense pure passion for the plant and the pure culture that has existed around it.

What’s your background and what made you decide to move into the cannabis space?

I’ve been a plant-obsessed human being for over 20 years, and can’t see myself ever tiring of the desire to refine my skills and understanding in cultivation.

I studied horticulture and worked with plants for the last 2 decades, and throughout this, I have continued my cannabis interest and kept competitive and up to date through internet research applied to hands-on experience.

I perceived I could thrive in the recreational cannabis space but didn’t believe it to be possible to even be considered but I tossed my hat in the ring and began applying into the great black hole of internet job applications and was surprisingly replied to after months and months of internet silence. After I got over my “pinch myself to make sure it is a real moment” it made the whole experience seem a bit more realistic and I began to do it all with a bit more intent.

What do you see the benefits of legalization being for the global economy and most importantly for South Africa?

The benefit of legalisation is the creation of a very lucrative, entirely new, innovative market. That if developed correctly can

both local and international demands in an efficient and reliable manner.

This, like any opportunity, depends on how this is then controlled. Monopolizing as well as utilizing skills without relevant backgrounds have been major downfalls in previous markets.

Cannabis being the new industry that it is, we lack a set of standards to reference upon. This can create avenues where persons without proven qualifications in professional markets can lead companies astray and create systems based on inefficiency because traditional market methods were applied in modern recreational or medical markets with entirely different business models.

The same lack of historical standards or references in business can make it difficult for persons without an extensive background in the industry to be able to quantify some of the quality characteristics of the product. This process shouldn’t be perceived as untechnical or simple either as many have previously been led to believe, there are multiple large newly built facilities which only a little while ago had millions pumped into them, which now stand empty and litter the cannabis landscape like empty graves as a stark reminder.

exactly the same.

However, without the correct buffers of control, the green rush could be short-lived only benefitting the hands of a few which would be disappointing when so much could be possible for a long time to come in managed correctly.

In closing, as we call it at SEED INC, you are a Cannapreneur. What advice can you share with SEED INC readers on how they can achieve their cannabis goals?

Passion, passion and passion. It is amazing to be able to work in an industry that is so dynamic with other intricate-minded people who are applying a collective thought process from their differing backgrounds in the same direction. This allows for massive innovation and continual creation and we see it in an explosion of ideas that is ever-shaping the cannabis landscape, and for a cultivator to have access to the best tools for growing on the planet is a dream I never thought I would be a part of.

provide a large number of jobs in various sectors and benefit globally but arguably even more in a country like South Africa, with its ideal climate in some areas, agricultural background and abundant workforce, it could develop a system which meets

If managed appropriately and respectfully, I personally believe it can be a great asset to South Africa from its potential in the recreational and medicinal markets, as well as the vast array of other products that can be manufactured from cannabis. I would personally love to be a part of a thriving South African cannabis market, and I am sure there are many others who feel

But for every job, there are people coming up through the ranks who are trying just as hard to prove themselves and are hungrier and desire it more. If you don’t keep your own tool shed sharp through your own passion and desire to better your own self, then the next time the market dips due to an outdoor harvest or an abundance of licensing then it might be your job security in question.

Passion is what makes these companies stand out in a sea of abundance, and the niche that this passion keeps customers coming back for more.

A BLOOMING INDUSTRY A SPOTLIGHT

ON THE CANNABIS EXPO

The cannabis industry has experienced rapid growth and expansion in recent years, opening up opportunities for businesses and consumers alike. In response to this changing landscape, The Cannabis Expo was established as a global meeting point and showcase for cannabis-related businesses and products.

THE BIRTH OF THE CANNABIS EXPO

The idea for The Cannabis Expo was born out of the recognition that Africa needed a central hub for the international cannabis industry to come together. With the industry gaining traction worldwide, it was essential to create a platform where industry leaders, activists, politicians, and the public could engage with each other and explore the potential of this versatile plant. Silas Howarth, the co-founder of The Cannabis Expo, explains, “We realised that Africa needed a global meeting point and a showcase for cannabis business and products.”

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

The first Cannabis Expo took place in Pretoria, South Africa in November 2018, shortly after the laws regarding

personal adult cannabis use were changed for the better. Since then, the Expo has grown in popularity and expanded to major business hubs across South Africa, with a successful event also hosted in Mexico City. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, The Cannabis Expo has continued to grow year-on-year, showcasing the industry’s ability to adapt and thrive, even in difficult times.

DIVERSE VISITORS AND EXHIBITORS

The Cannabis Expo attracts a diverse range of visitors, mirroring the broad spectrum of products and services available in the cannabis industry. People from all walks of life, young and old, come to the expo, reflecting the growing interest in cannabis for various purposes. Whether attendees are seeking business opportunities or looking for cannabis products and information for personal

use, the expo offers something for everyone. Howarth explains, “The visitors coming to The Cannabis Expo are as diverse as the type of cannabis products and services on offer.”

Over the years, the number of exhibitors at The Cannabis Expo has grown significantly. From around 50 exhibitors at the first expo in 2018, the event now boasts close to 300 participating exhibitors from around the world. These exhibitors represent a wide range of cannabis-related products and services, providing attendees with a wealth of options and opportunities to explore.

NAVIGATING LEGALITIES AND REGULATIONS

Organising an expo centred around cannabis comes with its fair share of legal considerations. However, The Cannabis Expo has been careful to abide by local laws and regulations, ensuring that it remains a celebration of the legal cannabis industry. By adhering to legal requirements and guidelines, The Cannabis Expo has successfully overcome any potential legal obstacles. This commitment to compliance has allowed the expo to continue growing and evolving alongside the industry it represents.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE CANNABIS EXPO

Since its inception, The Cannabis Expo has grown organically along with the cannabis industry. The event has expanded to multiple cities, reflecting the growth and interest in cannabis across different regions.

One of the key factors contributing to the success of The Cannabis Expo is its ability to strike a balance between business and fun. “Over time, we have curated the perfect mix of exhibitors, informative discussions, businesscentric spaces, and recreational activities.” says Howarth.

The expo offers not only a platform for industry professionals to connect and collaborate but also an environment for attendees to enjoy themselves and learn more about the benefits of cannabis.

A LOOK TO THE FUTURE: GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS

As the cannabis industry continues to grow and innovate, The Cannabis Expo

remains committed to staying at the forefront of these developments. “With continued growth and innovation in the cannabis industry, both locally and internationally, we are extremely excited about the new products and services and business opportunities that will be presented at The Cannabis Expo over the next few years.” Howarth states.

The ultimate goal of The Cannabis Expo is to be a platform that not only showcases the latest trends and advancements in the cannabis industry but also advocates for better and fairer legislation. By bringing together industry professionals, activists, politicians, and the public, the expo aims to push for a thriving cannabis economy that benefits all.

THE TEAM BEHIND THE CANNABIS EXPO

The Cannabis Expo is a family-owned business, supported by a passionate team with decades of experience in hosting and marketing successful public events. Their expertise and dedication have been instrumental in the growth and success of The Cannabis Expo.

The Cannabis Expo has emerged as a vital platform for the cannabis industry, providing a space for networking, education, and celebration. From its humble beginnings in 2019 to its expansion into the largest cannabis event in Africa, the expo has become a central meeting point for industry leaders, activists, politicians, and the public. With its commitment to compliance, diversity, and innovation, The Cannabis Expo continues to play a significant role in shaping the future of the cannabis industry.

LANDRACE OF

SEED INC asks Ryan Pieterse to explain the history of LandRace strains, his travels to find them and why they are the future.

to make them more manageable in an indoor environment. Every strain that we have available to us, at some stage came from a landrace strain that has been worked numerous amounts of times to get the desired results. What started as a peace-given crop turned into a peace-given form of Art.

IIsn’t it ironic that soon as something is nearly pushed into extinction, we actually realize how crucial these genetics are for the future of cannabis? Over the years of prohibition, we bred the strongest strains, Phenohunted the densest buds with the highest trichome production and largest THC content for the recreational black market, because until recently, that was the main market of the herb.

Thankfully the dark stigma behind cannabis has finally lifted and the true benefits of the plant have been unmasked with research and the lies exposed.

Here I would like to explain landrace strains and the significance they hold for the future of cannabis. At some stage in our lives, we have all heard about Malawi gold, Swazi gold and Durban Poison - these are just examples of three world-famous African landrace strains. But what makes them special? And where do these strains fit within the

ever-expanding cannabis industry?

A landrace strain is a strain of genetic purity and consistency that differ from our modern-day poly hybrids and offer effects, appearances, flavours and aromas that would be considered “new” to the industry as a whole. These genetics have adapted over hundreds of years and thrived in certain regions due to their genetic traits and offer a vast range of diversity of well-defined genetic makeup.

The landrace genetics have dated back millions of years, with most evidence shown in Asian history, but only in the early 50s to the late 70s, did the cannabis market really start evolving. In the early 50s hippies from the USA and Europe embarked on an overland trek, starting in Europe with Kathmandu as their final destination. On this trip, many brought back seeds that they had collected along the way which they then grew back in their homelands. Most of these genetics were long-flowering Sativas.

Pretty soon the war on drugs started, forcing growers to move their crops indoors to avoid law enforcement. This is when the first hybrids came into existence. The growers bred their strains to shorten the flowering time of the plants as well as to control the size

With the ever-evolving industry, along with social acceptance, comes a new Era of breeding of tastes, effects and medicinal benefits, and this is where landraces come in. Preserving as many landraces as we can as quickly as we can, will open up space for new strains to come onto the market. By combining new terpene profiles in one strain, we bring a new era of breeding, introducing a stronger range of terpene profiles which alter the way certain cannabinoids such as THC interact with the brain which in turn will influence the high.

Despite the never-ending possibilities with regard to breeding with landrace strains, they have also been shown to be medically significant. In a study conducted on African landraces as a whole, not only did it contain THC (the psychoactive cannabinoid) but also has rather high readings of Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV). This cannabinoid has a multitude of medical benefits ranging from reducing glucose intolerance linked to obesity to treating type-two diabetes by decreasing fasting plasma. There is also ongoing research on its benefits towards Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy to name a few.

With more understanding through lab work and what compounds aid what ailments, we are able to create a new name for medical cannabis and medicate users according to their symptoms. As stated earlier, breeders globally have been breeding for the black market and by doing that, have diluted the useful compounds and enhanced a certain compound for the users’ demand. Breeding aside, this is the most crucial role of landrace

41 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com CANNAPRENEURS

genetics in modern industry today.

The new laws of legalization opened the doors to the hype of exotic strains, and this is the main threat to our landraces worldwide. Gone are the days of buying slopes of neatly folded newspaper parcels at a taxi rank, nowadays bag appeal and potency naturally outweigh the OG strains that started this way of life for millions of people worldwide and nobody can take the blame for that. The industry is an ever-evolving industry but here at Love of Landrace, we strive to preserve these forgotten gems and bring them back and find their place in the industry these strains started.

Love of Landrace started 7 years ago upon stumbling across a feral field of cannabis in the mountains of KwaZuluNatal, and in 2020 I started to document our trips into South Africa and boarding countries in search of the purest forms of our African Landraces.

Since then we have met many like-minded individuals on all corners of the globe, from small-time growers to old-school growers and well-respected teams that share the same passion for

preserving our country’s cannabis history. We aim to bring them back into the modern-day industry for future hybrids selected from the preserved landraces.

What started off as a hobby has now grown into a passion. Working with rural communities all over South Africa, understanding their culture, learning the way they grow and have grown for generations, and preserving the genetics to expand and educate the importance these forgotten building blocks can and should mean to the cannabis industry as we know it today.

We not only aim to preserve these Landrace strains but to preserve the African cannabis history for the future.

(Follow us on Instagram @love.of.landrace to see what we have done and follow us to see future missions into the bush to find these amazing African Sativas.)

CLUBS HAZY HAZY

A CASE FOR CANNABIS FREEDOM

The burning issue of the legality of Cannabis Social Clubs, under the 2018 Constitutional Court (ConCourt) ruling to legalise cannabis for private use exploded in 2020, after the arrest of Cape Town-based Haze Club founder, Neil Liddell, who faces a possible 30 years in prison.

45 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com CANNAPRENEURS

For Liddell, a serial entrepreneur and natural risk taker, having ridden a bicycle from Taiwan to Cape Town for example, the ConCourt ruling was a clear business opportunity that he wanted to investigate.

After consulting legal advice to stay within the guidelines, which are blurry at best, they decided to not re-invent the wheel, but follow a tried and test Cannabis Club model that has worked elsewhere.

Liddell explains, “With the 2018 ConCourt ruling came the idea that you could sublease an area of your grow room, thereby ticking the box of a private space for members. In such a way you could grow on behalf of other people.

“We took this idea to Cullinan lawyer Paul-Michael Keichel, who is now representing us in the appeal process at the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) and eventually to the ConCourt.”

HOW DID THE HAZE CLUB OPERATE?

“People send us their seeds and we cultivate it on their behalf, dry it, cure it, and send it back to them. This wasn’t something that was new, other people had been thinking about it. We were just one of the first to act on it.”

As you can imagine, with so much open to interpretation in the original ruling they needed to take a conservative approach to stay within the loosely defined rules.

“We had to fall within the bounds of the law, which means, it’s very difficult to grow in the way we wanted to do from seed. It’s very unpredictable. But it was a conservative approach advised by our attorneys. It was just their opinion and prosecutors don’t agree with that, which is why we find ourselves in court.”

But nothing can really ever prepare you for a knock on the door from the Hawks, armed to the teeth, expecting to find a seedy underground operation. “We were operating for about a year until the police came knocking,” says Liddell.

That’s the knock on the door that any cannabis grower is dreading. Constitutional rights are one thing on paper, but if government departments are not singing from the same sheet you can run into serious

problems. Something that Liddell found out the hard way in one of the scariest jails in South Africa, for an experience that neither he nor his wife and family will soon forget.

“The police arrived one day, but I don’t think we were targeted. We’d just been installing solar and battery backup to deal with the ramp-up in load shedding at the time. It was probably just one of the installers who saw what was going on and reported us to the police. The narcotics division of the Hawks arrived in full force with the local police.

“They arrived and said, ‘What do you do here?’ And I told them we are running a Cannabis Club. And they barged in and proceeded to arrest us and took away everything we’d built in a year and dismantled it all in a matter of hours. Who knows the damage to the equipment and if we’ll ever get it back,” he bemoans.

DEVASTATING OVERSIGHT

What Liddell had failed to take into consideration when setting up the operation is where they would be taken if raided and arrested. He was about to find out where he stood with the police.

“Because our facility was in Ottery, you get taken to the closest police station, which is Grassy Park. As you can imagine it’s quite a rough police station and jail to end up at. On the way the cops took away our shoelaces because they said the other inmates might strangle us with them,” he says with trepidation in his eloquent voice. “Then we knew shit had got real!”

“Within the first 10 minutes of arriving, the leader who everybody was scared of, said to my colleague, ‘Hey whitey (slang term for a Caucasian person), come and lie next to me on my mattress, I just want to talk to you man.’ We were now fighting for our lives but managed to distract him with something, and luckily he was not persistent.

“Every time that door opens you think, who’s coming in here now? I’ve never been so scared in my life. It’s really hectic in there with gangsters and if somebody asks you for your shoes or anything you just hand it over, we

didn’t want any trouble,” he insists. After three long nights in jail, Liddell, who was 36 years old at the time, frantically wanted to get out of there. His lifeline came on a Friday; just hours before they would’ve been sent to Pollsmoor Prison for a week, a bigger facility that has an equally bad reputation.

“Thankfully on the Friday we managed to get a court date and were rushed through to Wynberg court, where we applied and were granted bail. Thankfully they rushed us straight into court, as we had been warned about the holding cells being dangerous.

“The charges have since been dropped pending the outcome of the SCA appeal. It was a couple of days in the heart of Cape Town gangland, and was pretty traumatic for both me and my family. But life moves on, I find myself now producing podcasts.”

SEED OF DOUBT

As the government grapples with the laws around commercial cannabis production, seemingly without much communication between departments, Liddell sees Grow Clubs as the ideal way to bridge the gap between prohibition, and a future where commercial cannabis is legalized.

“Yes, there is that seed of doubt. I don’t know if it’ll ever get there. There’s a possibility, however unlikely and it certainly weighs on your mind. But it’s taken so long already. You can’t

think about that all the time.” explains Liddell.

“I see the Grow Clubs as this intermediary to bridge that gap. I believe it will be legal. That’ll come out in the court proceedings. It’s a way for the general public to access quality cannabis. There are more checks and balances involved in making it safer.”

THE LEGALITY OF GROW CLUBS IN 2023

With grow clubs of all shapes and sizes popping up in the three years since his arrest, the industry is rapidly turning into the Wild West. Liddell goes on to unpack some of the finer points of his case, and why they lost their first case, which is currently on appeal. He makes it clear that the Haze Club was not acting as a dealer.

“So firstly, that term ‘deal’ is not a good one because it is illegal to deal in cannabis and we were in the Grow Club model. The premise of it does not deal in cannabis. It’s simply growing on behalf of someone else. Many of these clubs that have sprung up around the country are definitely running a risky thing. And I’m not sure how the police are not clamping down, for whatever reason they’re not.

“But the way we view the law at present, no one is acting legally there.”

Liddell goes on to dig deeper into the finer details of the case. What appears is a lack of understanding or misinterpretation of the ConCourt 2018 ruling, neglecting the wider benefits of cannabis at times.

“The nitty-gritty of the High Court case was around the ruling made by Judge Hayley Slingers, the acting presiding Judge. She essentially disagreed that people are allowed to outsource the growing of their cannabis. Which naturally has come with absurdities. How can people who either physically can’t grow their own or don’t have time to grow their own, how can you exclude them from their rights to access cannabis? That is where we think the Judge erred.”

He continues to explain the technical issues that lead to the appeal, “One of the more legal technical things that was missing from the judgment was, is there a less restrictive means? When you make something illegal, you have to show that there is a reason for restricting people’s rights. What the Judge failed to do was this legal analysis which shows

that she’s looked at these less restrictive means and determined that there aren’t any. So that is something that the appeal hinges on. We are saying there is a far less restrictive means for the regulation of cannabis. And the Grow Club model is one of those.”

“The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) deals with these constitutional matters which this all hinges on. It is a much bigger panel of five, so we’re fairly confident that we have a good chance of success,” he says confidently.

As with so many legal systems around the world, this will all take years to sort out. They haven’t even been given an SCA date yet, and no matter what the decision is, the ruling will need to be taken to ConCourt to ratify it, as it affects the Constitution.

This case is a prime example of how cumbersome and slow the legal system is. Some might argue that a slow decision with many eyes makes for a better one, but while the clock is ticking, Liddell is having the fork out for legal fees, with a decision only likely in late 2024. Who knows where the industry will be then, cannabis could be legalised and you’d imagine this would all melt away into the ether.

The burning question is how can this case impact the freedom of cannabis users and social clubs around the country? Liddell provides some valuable insight: “If we win, it will have to go to Parliament to actually develop the framework that that clubs have to abide by. So I imagine a bit of a free for all in the interim. We saw how long it’s still taking from the Prince 3 Judgement to actual legislation. It’s still not there.”

THE PRICE OF FREEDOM

As you can imagine, fighting all these legal battles has taken a toll on his pocket. Luckily his legal fees are pro bono, from his lawyers Keichel and Ricky Stone, but he’s had to foot the bill for all the court costs, which have run up to R200 000 and counting. Sadly, the profitable cannabis industry has not offered much support financially.

“We’ve been hoping to get support from the industry, and we’ve seen very little of that. Fields of Green have been the exception. Myrtle has been very supportive since the beginning, but they’re also are under their own financial pressure. There’s very little financial support, which is disappointing, especially seeing how many clubs are out there and how it affects everyone,” he reflects.

Having spent the last three years grappling with the legal system, Liddell fears for the safety of less fortunate cannabis growers, who are arrested without means to post Bail. “This is a sad situation. You can imagine a traditional grower in the Eastern Cape when the cops rock up and arrest them. They won’t have that access to a proper lawyer. Legal framework needs to be put in place to protect our traditional growers.”

Thankfully, cannabis is getting more socially acceptable, while the newly vaunted Phakisa Action Lab lays out a roadmap for legalisation and commercialisation by government. At the moment, it’s all talk, while little consideration is reportedly given to small-scale rural farmers, who have been the backbone of the industry for years.

“So is there light at the end of the tunnel? Absolutely. How far away that light is, we don’t know. I love to quote Paul-Michael, who says, ‘Government is like a drunk octopus. Each of its tentacles is operating independently without knowing what the other is doing.’ And when he speaks of those tentacles, you speak of government departments. You’ve got SAPS, you’ve got the Department of Justice, and you’ve got all these different departments with their own agendas and no cohesion really.

“That’s been the biggest challenge is to get governments to act in a uniform voice. Hopefully that is starting to happen and we get some positive change out of them outside of this court case,” he concluded.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THE HEMP INDUSTRY WILL CREATE 25 000 NEW JOBS AND BE WORTH AN ESTIMATED 10 BILLION RAND BY 2025.

We speak to Wolf from Wolf & Wolf Architects about their hemp house built in the Bo-Kaap and how hemp will change the face of the building industry

Wolf of Wolf and Wolf Architects has designed & facilitated almost all of the Western Cape’s hemp building projects to date, starting with ‘The House of Hemp’ in Noordhoek, built for South

Africa’s foremost hemp expert, Tony Budden, from Hemporium, in 2011.

This was followed by the hemp house in the Bo-Kaap. The double-story Bo-Kaap hemp house was built using a timber and concrete structure with Hempcrete

infill. Over 50% of the hemp was sourced locally from hemp cultivation research projects.

Set within the culturally and historically sensitive Bo-Kaap, this project explores the use of timber, clay and lime plasters,

focusing on energy efficiency and the reduction of the carbon footprint of the building. The design succeeds in addressing the street in a historically appropriate way while offering a contemporary interior space. This work

forms an important landmark on a journey towards refining the combined use of timber and industrial hemp. The home has a built-in water catchment, a bio-digester in the basement and a greenhouse on the roof with the potential for an

aquaponic system.

Hempcrete is an energyefficient, low-impact, water-smart building material that offers a better carbon footprint than other home building materials. An alternative to cement blocks, which are very energy-

51 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com CANNAHOME

intensive, hempcrete can be an integral part of home building, using just enough energy to keep its occupants warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

“We pride ourselves on being strong advocates for the hemp industry in South Africa and are leaders in hemp construction nationally. Having built and

been involved in several hemp built homes and, more recently, larger building projects, we understand the benefits and limitations of this material. The benefits to

personal and environmental health are substantial,” explains Wolf.

Hempcrete is made from hemp mixed with a formulated lime binder and

52 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com

water; it does not require heat to produce. This material can be formed to fit between the studs of a house hempcrete or as bricks, blocks or panels set between a timber, steel or concrete structural system. Because it is less dense than regular clay or cement blocks, it reduces the load on the structure of the building

Hemp can also be used like stucco to protect the outside walls of new and existing homes from moisture. As a vapourpermeable material, it can absorb water when it’s raining and then expel it when the sun is shining. This is a huge advantage because, for many building materials, moisture problems can lead to mould and rot.

Hemp actually takes carbon out of the air and therefore has lower embodied energy. Hempcrete actually absorbs more carbon than it emits during its manufacture, making it carbon negative.

To put that into perspective: one cubic metre

of hempcrete will sequester approximately 110kg of carbon from the atmosphere. An average-sized house would be built using around 50 cubic metres of hempcrete for the walls, meaning that an average hempcrete house would lock up 5.5 tonnes of carbon for the lifetime of the building. This compares to a more standard new house of a similar size, in which the walls would be likely to emit 48 tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere. This is a saving of 53.5 tonnes of carbon for every house built. It is clear to see that the carbon balance is not even close and that, notwithstanding slight variations in calculation methodology, building with hempcrete can significantly reduce carbon emissions, making it a more sustainable building material.

Hempcrete’s ability to save carbon does not stop there. Hempcrete is an insulative walling material and it has two crucial attributes in its favour to

reduce carbon emissions and save on energy bills – the qualities of moisture management and thermal mass. Largely overlooked by building regulations, these attributes mean that hempcrete buildings require less energy to keep occupants warm and comfortable.

“Our commitment to hemp is based on environmental as well as economic factors. In the context of South Africa, where we have both a suitable climate as well as large amounts of open land, industrial hemp could be cultivated and harvested in abundance with relative ease. It grows quickly, requires little water and has no pesticides or herbicides as it is inherently pest resistant, so its cultivation can be completely toxin-free. In fact, it can even contribute to the Phyto-remediation of previously contaminated soils.” says Wolf,

CANNAHOME
An average-sized house would be built using around 50 cubic metres of hempcrete for the walls, meaning that an average hempcrete house would lock up 5.5 tonnes of carbon for the lifetime of the building. ”

“Considering that hemp can also be used to create organic, durable and comfortable textiles, pressed for highly nutritional non-psychoactive oil, used in cosmetics and even processed to create an alternative to plastic, the cultivation of industrial hemp has the potential to substantially grow our local economy and provide sustainable and dignified jobs.”

“Afrimat-Hemp is making hemp blocks locally. The first local farmers started planting hemp at the end of 2022. Afrimat-Hemp has manufactured South Africa’s first locally made hempdecorticator which it will be using to process local hemp in the coming months. This will make hempcrete & hempcrete blocks more affordable. Afrimat-hemp has developed a hempcrete mix and hemp-lime plasters suitable for lightweight insulating construction and for heritage restoration work. They are also developing lightweight hemp prefabricated panels for rapid construction and insulation work.”

Of all the plant fibres used in construction, hemp boasts several characteristics that make it superior from both the ecological perspective and the economic one. With most conventional wall construction techniques, you can expect to find multiple layers of different materials, each performing only one specific function. For example, a steel-framed structure with a composite

wall system requires an insulation layer, a vapour barrier layer, a breather membrane and a sheathing layer, as well as the finishing cladding, to name a few. A hempcrete wall can perform all of these functions itself and, due to the reduced number of connection points between these materials, a more air-tight envelope can

be achieved.

“Hemp construction can be straightforward and low-tech. It can create a whole new industry and job pool, which is particularly relevant in our South African context. This is the reason hemp is our material of choice for non-loadbearing elements.” says Wolf.

In 2015, Greenhome, Wolf

and Wolf Architects, and Hemporium joined forces to build a hemp extension to Yiza Ekahaya. Yiza Ekhaya is a soup kitchen in the informal settlement of Khayelitsha in Cape Town and feeds and cares for over 250 people daily. We are currently fundraising for a further extension to Yiza Ekhaya it is called “Mickey’s Lighthouse” a 3-storey hemp soup kitchen and safe house for young girls.

Wolf and Wolf Architects are currently working on a 12-story building in the Cape Town CBD where they use hemp for the internal walls due to their good acoustic and thermal properties. Due to hemp being so light, they reduce the loading on the foundations and have a fantastic carbon footprint.

“In the last three months, we have noticed an increase in the interest in hemp construction and have introduced four large architectural firms to hemp as a viable carbon-neutral building material option,” Wolf explains.

Let’s Let’s Talk Talk about about Hemp, Hemp, Baby… Baby…

ell, that is like the song goes, except, in this instance, there seems to be a lot of confusion about what we are talking about. You can’t smoke it – or can you? You can’t make clothes from it – or can you? It certainly is very regulated – or is it? It is very expensive to set up growing operations – or maybe not? The answer is - It depends. Let us try and get to the bottom of what hemp is.

On a high level, excuse the pun; there are two types of hemp. The first is the lowgrowing bush-type variety that looks exactly like cannabis. You grow it indoors for the best quality. You harvest and only use the flowers; you can smoke it or make extracts. The only

difference between this type of hemp and cannabis is a rather ridiculous South African law stipulating that the THC level may not be more than 0.2%. As soon as the mythical threshold of 0.2% THC has been passed, then suddenly, the exact same plant turns into an evil cannabis that is hugely regulated all over the world. And, no, you cannot make clothes from this hemp.

The other type of hemp is referred to as industrial hemp. The word “industrial” is important as the industry is where the plant has its best uses. We are talking about textile-, construction-, health-, pet bedding-, bio-fuel-, automotive-, plastic-, mining-, steel and many other industries that can manufacture an estimated 50 000 plus consumer goods from the plant.

Industrial hemp plants are grown outdoors at a spacing of 15 cm intervals and grow between 3 to 4 meters tall. For every hectare of industrial hemp planted, you will need 55 kg of seed. Planted in October and harvested in February, the whole industrial hemp plant is cut off at the base and left in the field to rett. This is a drying process that helps the stems to start breaking down.

After retting, the plant is baled in 500 kg round bales and delivered to an Agro Processing facility where the industrial hemp is broken down into its primary components of fibre (outside of plant), hurd (inside of plant) and grains. These raw materials can be used by industry to manufacture consumer goods.

Industrial hemp sequesters 22 tons of CO2 per Ha, and in addition to all the sustainable goods that can be manufactured, the roots that stay in the soil are hugely beneficial as it

The prospect and outlook for industrial hemp in South Africa are huge and estimated at around R3 billion (https://info.hempsolutions. co.za/Hemp-Pie-Size). Three primary sectors within industrial hemp in South Africa are Agriculture / Cultivation, Processing and Consumer Goods manufacturing.

Hemp Solutions advises that one should be focussed on exploring economic opportunities in one vertical within the industrial hemp economy as it is impossible to play in all three sectors or even in two sectors at the same time when you start out. Pick either agriculture, processing, or consumer goods manufacture and become the best you can be in that sector before expanding to another sector.

There are some unfortunate realities that industrial hemp entrepreneurs currently face.

Industrial hemp processing is needed to unlock the value chain for South Africa, and that is exactly where Hemp Solutions is focussing by establishing six industrial-scale agro-processing factories throughout the country. Hemp Solutions have already issued 1200 Ha of licenses and are seeking more contract growers, as each of the six processing factories will have an initial capacity of 2000 hectares.

LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE

EXPLORING THE USAGE AND BENEFITS OF HERBAL SMOKING BLENDS

A FUSION OF RITUAL, AFRICAN TRADITIONAL MEDICINES AND CANNABIS

The act of smoking, spanning various cultures throughout history, has long been associated with rituals and ceremonies. While cannabis has gained significant popularity in recent years, herbal smoking blends as a mix for weed have only recently emerged as a unique alternative for those seeking a distinctive experience other than Tobacco.

The Ritual of Smoking: Smoking has often transcended its practical purpose and been regarded as a ritualistic activity. Across cultures, smoking blends have played a central role in religious and spiritual ceremonies, offering a bridge between the earthly and the divine. The act of preparing and lighting the herbs, the rhythmic inhaling and exhaling, and the communal aspect of smoking have created a sense of connectedness and mindfulness. This ritualistic nature is steeped in African traditions, with peoples such as the Khoi and San as well as the Rastafari community and it continues to attract individuals who seek a mindful and intentional smoking experience.

African traditional medicines have a rich history that spans centuries, utilizing herbs and plants for healing and spiritual purposes. The use of herbal smoking blends is deeply rooted in these practices, as certain herbs are believed to possess medicinal properties and connect the smoker to their ancestral spirits. In African cultures, smoking blends are often used in ceremonies, rituals, and divination practices to invoke spiritual experiences, foster introspection, and facilitate healing. These blends are meticulously crafted, with each herb

selected for its unique properties and effects on the mind, body, and spirit. They often include herbs known for their relaxing properties, such as chamomile, sceletium, or passionflower. These natural ingredients can induce relaxation, reduce stress levels, and promote a sense of well-being. Additionally, the ritual of smoking itself can be soothing, offering a moment of tranquility and reflection.

Some individuals seek to enhance their cannabis experience by adding flavor, depth, or a therapeutic effect. Most use tobacco to make the cannabis burn better so one of the notable advantages of herbal smoking blends is that they are free from tobacco and therefore nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance.

Another primary reason people use herbal smoking blends is the ability to adjust the levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in cannabis. By incorporating THC-free herbs like mullein or marshmallow, users can dilute the potency of their cannabis, like a mixer in alcoholic drinks to ‘tone down’ the strength or harshness of a vodka or tequila for example, to achieve a more gentle and mellow experience. This is particularly beneficial for individuals sensitive to higher THC levels and especially new users or those desiring a more moderate high as modern day hybrid strains increase in their levels of THC.

Some herbs and botanicals are also very complimentary to Cannabis and can even potentiate or enhance certain feelings and effects. Kanna (Sceletium Tortosum), a uniquely Southern African plant, is well recognized for its uplifting, mood enhancing properties and it is widely known as a natural

carefully chosen traditional African botanicals with other smokable ingredients, Leafolo aims to provide a unique smoking experience that combines ancient traditions with modern sensibilities. Each ingredient in Leafolo is sourced ethically and sustainably, ensuring the preservation of indigenous knowledge and promoting fair trade practices. The product offers a diverse range of blends, each with its own purpose and character, inviting users to embark on a sensory journey that embraces the holistic nature of smoking.

Herbal smoking blends can also serve as a perfect mix to extend one’s cannabis supply. Incorporating a herbal smoking blend helps users stretch their cannabis stash without adding tobacco or compromising the smoking experience. This approach also allows for more mindful and cost-effective cannabis consumption, adapting to different occasions or managing tolerance levels over time.

Whether exploring the world of herbal smoking blends for their unique flavors, seeking a spiritual connection, or simply enjoying the art of smoking, these blends provide a gateway to an ancient practice, reimagined for the modern world.

By combining tradition and innovation, herbal smoking blends like Leafolo exemplify the evolving landscape of smoking rituals, catering to a diverse range of needs and desires while honoring cultural heritage. As society continues to embrace alternative forms of relaxation and self-care, the art of smoking will continue to evolve, revealing new paths for exploration and appreciation.

At the end of April on a cold, dark night in the remote Tankwa desert of the Karoo, South Africa a massive wooden Cannabis leaf was set alight. This happened at an event called Afrikaburn, a regional version of the famous Burning Man event which takes place in the USA.

Nearly 10 000 participants come together from all around the world to create a temporary self-sustaining camping community that exists for only one week of the year. This ephemeral ‘city’ consists of theme camps, people dressed up in costumes and performance art as well as huge, interactive temporary art installations and structures which get burnt during the week, of which this leaf was one.

To showcase their love and appreciation for the miracle plant that is Cannabis, the Garden of Weeden camp, built and assembled a cannabis leaf art piece as their gift to the AfrikaBurn event.

Conceptualised and coordinated by Johannesburg-based photographer, visionary, and regular AfrikaBurn attendee, Greg Mulford, along with his Garden of Weeden team, this nearly 13-metre-high tribute to the Cannabis plant was illuminated in the desert night with green flood lights and LEDs. It stood for only four days before it was set alight, surrounded by thousands of enthralled AfrikaBurn festival goers.

The burning of the leaf was the ‘grand finale’ of three months of tireless work, by a committed team of 21 people in Johannesburg, who prepared, cut and drilled together a mass of scraps of wood donated to the project,” said Cliff Giesenow, co-founder of the Cannabis Trade Association of Africa (CTAA), and a team member the Garden of Weeden camp.

The Garden of Weeden theme camp offered desert festival attendees a comfortable space to consume weed in a relaxed, shaded lounge oasis which included a ‘Gifting Tree’ where lighters and rolling papers were made freely available as part of the AfrikaBurn culture and principle of ‘gifting’.

“The monumental piece of art served to highlight that the Cannabis plant should be made available to all across the planet and that a plant should not be criminalized,” said Giesenow, who is an entrepreneur in the local Cannabis industry.

As part of the art project, 1000 cannabis joints were gifted to the participating crowd who encircled the giant leaf, prior to the burning on the night of April 28, 2023. “An attached note asked the crowd to ‘Light up when we light up’, in communal celebration and honour of the miracle plant, which can be used to provide food, medicine, housing, fuel, clothing and a host of other things,” explained Giesenow. “We were thrilled with the outcome. Our message came across clearly, and the universality and love of the most widely consumed and broadly used plant was evident.”

This was visually supported by another monumental art piece that was placed close by that graced the desert landscape – that of a giant heart.

Mulford said that while conceptualising and executing the project was a huge effort and amount of work, it was a Labour of Love. “We had an amazing team supporting the

realisation of the vision in celebration and honouring this plant and her gift to humanity.” “It was an honour and privilege to help and support this team and to be part of Garden of Weeden,” said Giesenow. “I look forward to working together with Mulford and the crew back in the desert next year in Tankwa spreading the love of Cannabis again.”

Award-winning Chef, Matt Smith, walks us through how to make CannaButter and some incredible Blazed and Infused recipes.

About forty minutes after starters are served, is my favourite part of doing private events. As if on cue, the volume of the conversations begins to increase. A couple of minutes after this, the laughter begins. It does not stop for most of the evening, it just gets louder as each course is served. Eyes begin to take on that glazed look, and bouts of hysterical giggling and laughter follow.

All guests gasp in wonder as I perform a hash-making demonstration. The loupe comes out and one by one they stare at the piles of different grades of hash that have been collected on the table. Zoning out until the person behind them gets impatient. Almost immediately there are calls for friends to help each other roll a hashy. One holds the paper and doob while the other generously sprinkle fresh hash onto the ready-to-be-rolled fatty. Then the next two follow. Suddenly the room is filled with thick hash smoke. Dessert is served shortly after this, and everyone gets somewhere comfortable to chill.

So, you are probably wondering what exactly it is that I do.

Well, let me start at the beginning, about twenty-three years ago. Once I finished matric, I did an in-service chef apprenticeship at a 5-star hotel in Johannesburg. A few years later I owned a top 50 restaurant and worked in a few other executive-level positions at different establishments. It was time for a change. I had been itching to move to Cape Town and when the opportunity came to open a

restaurant in Camps Bay, I jumped. I moved and I have never looked back.

At about the same time I started my apprenticeship, I began to grow cannabis. Not for sale or anything like that, it was just to learn. I became interested in breeding and that was my hobby. It was inevitable that my two passions would become one.

I started an events company called Blazed and Infused. I started to cater for private events where each dish has been carefully calibrated to each guest’s tolerance level. Those who have had too many edibles will know how unpleasant it is. So, this became quite a popular event. Word spread, hard. I do not host the event; I provide high-quality meals and entertainment. Oh, and a variety of incredibly rare buds to consume. Each event is different and in 15 years of Blazed and Infused, I have never served the same menu twice.

I have done brunches in the park, crayfish braais, normal 3-course meals, grannies book club snacks and 8-course fine dining degustation menus plus many others. It is all about the host’s favourite meals or their theme.

Blazed and Infused also prepares a wide variety of edibles on order. I often get requests for infused cold drinks, salad dressings, cheeses, assorted confectionary, sausages, bacon and even just a kilogram of infused sugar. You name it and I will make it.

I have spent years creating a paindestroying topical cream that is incredibly effective in relieving soreness and stiffness caused by arthritis. Another extremely popular product is an oil that is rubbed on

68 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com CANNA EATS

the lowest bone of the spine, and it is a wonder for menstrual pain and even better to remove pain whilst giving birth. Two of my children were born at home using just the oil on the back and, both were dream births.

So, those are my passions, helping people, serving incredible food, and creating new infusions. And growing. I love growing and have won two international competitions for some of

my plants, that’s a whole different project though.

I have put together 3 recipes for you to try. They are all goodies. I have also given one of my recipes for making cannabutter or coconut oil, as well as a quick rundown of decarboxylation.

I hope that you will enjoy them. Stay elevated.

CANNA BUTTER

Whipping up some edibles is not as simple as mixing cannabis with butter and off you go. Unfortunately, there are some steps that need to be taken for your edibles to hit the spot, so to speak. There is no need to worry or be bothered as these steps are super simple to perform and really make all the difference in how your edibles turn out.

There are many ways to ‘roll a fatty’ and I am going to give you my recipe and method that has not let me down in over 20 years of making edibles. Firstly, let us go through the ingredients list and I will then explain what does what and how to prepare your flour for a successful infusion.

For more information or to book Matt for an event go to; www.blazedandinfused.co.za

Ingredients

50g decarboxylated cannabis bud or trim

500g clarified butter or extra virgin coconut oil.

Equipment:

Oven (convection is better but no problem if you don’t have it)

Oven thermometer or infrared thermometer

2l canning jar (needs to be heatproof)

Casserole dish or oven tray

Foil paper

So, I hear you asking what decarboxylated bud is?

Well, here is a simple explanation for you. It’s a vital step so please pay attention. Without being too scientific, decarbing makes the acid form of THC (which is non-active) into active THC. Think of it this way, if you eat some bud fresh off the plant or even dried and cured, you will likely feel no effects at all. But, when you smoke or vape the same bud, you get your buzz on. This is because the heat has decarbed the cannabis while on its way to your lungs, thus making it active. We use the oven to decarb the bud, so it is active when it is consumed. I often hear people moaning that their edibles don’t work well, and this is almost always why.

Now decarbing also helps remove any moisture from the bud and thus makes infusions more effective. This brings us to the butter or oil.

As THC is not soluble in water, we need to use something that will dissolve the THC and keep it in a solution. The most used base is something fatty. THC readily dissolves in butter, oils and even fats like bacon fat. Yum. THC is also soluble in alcohol as well as other solvents like butane.

I will discuss the steps to decarbing your bud in the recipe and method section a little further down the page.

The butter or coconut oil option is what we will use for this recipe. Both are easily found, and both are great for infusions.

Your next question might be what is clarified butter. It’s a good question too. Clarified butter is butter that has the milk solids removed which makes for a purer butter with fewer contaminants and a longer shelf life as well as a higher smoke point. This is the temperature that the butter will begin to smoke and burn and, when it comes to cooking and baking, this is advantageous. Here is how you clarify butter.

Cube the butter and place it in a pot or saucepan and allow it to melt over medium heat.

Once the butter has all melted, you should be able to see it has separated into a clear yellow

liquid and a whiteish thicker liquid. Separate the white from the yellow. Keep the butter and discard the milk solids.

That’s it, super easy, yeah? Trust me it makes a superior infusion which relates into a superior edible.

Ok, lets jump into the recipe and method. Before I go on, you can use any amount of bud or trim here. I am just giving my recipe. You can add more if you want it stronger or less if you want it weaker. That’s all preference. As with all edibles, start slowly and work up. Ingesting too much THC is very unpleasant.

Method

• 110° for 110 minutes. Heat your oven to 110° (this is the temperature I use but there are other methods)

• Grind up your buds or trim fairly well. I found with this method; too finely ground bud (like dust) makes a cloudy infusion with a lot of weedy flavour. So just grind it like you would for a jay.

• Once your material is ground, place it into a casserole or oven tray and even it out. Cover the casserole or tray with some foil, shiny side down. Prick a couple of small holes in the foil to allow moisture to escape.

• Once you hear the thermostat click, use a thermometer to check the accuracy of your oven. Get as close to 110° as you can. Once you are satisfied you are in the correct temperature zone, place the tray of buds into the oven on a middle shelf. Close your oven.

• Set a timer for 110 minutes. Once the timer goes, remove the tray or casserole from the oven and resist the urge to open the foil. The foil is to stop volatile terpenes from escaping and they will settle back onto the buds once everything cools down. Once everything has cooled enough to handle, remove the foil.

• Your material should be super dry and a brownish colour.

• Remove the material from the casserole or tray and place it into the canning jar. Add the clarified butter and give everything a good mix.

• When the oven has cooled, turn it on ever so slightly to around 60°. I find the best range to be between 50°and 60°.

• Once the thermostat clicks, close the jar with foil and make a couple very small holes in the top.

• Place the jar inside the oven and set a timer for 6 hours.

• After 6 hours remove the jar and give it a stir. Leave it outside the oven to cool and once cool, place it into the fridge to solidify.

• After it has solidified, remove from the fridge, and allow it to warm to room temperature again.

• Place it back inside the oven for another 4 hours at the 60°-infusion temperature. Set a timer.

• Once the timer goes off, remove the butter and bud from the oven and strain it through cheesecloth or a coffee filter. The smaller the mesh, the less contaminants in your final product.

• Squeeze and wring out as much butter as you can out of the bud. You won’t get it all back, trust me I have tried.

• Place the butter into its final container. You are now ready to rock some awesome edibles.

Just a quickie on the removing and solidifying step above. You can just go straight with a10 hour infusion, but I have found the step really ups the potency for some reason. I have not discovered the reason yet, but I am working on the answer. This step makes a huge difference with the coconut oil too.

SMOKED LOAF

Smoked aubergine pate served en croute

This silky vegetarian pate screams flavour and is a perfect starter with its fresh ingredients and pickled tomatoes. Its an easy one to make too.

Let’s get into it.

Servings: 4 to 6 portions

Time: about 1 hour depending on how good you are in the kitchen.

Equipment

Blender – stick, bar or bowl blender all work fine.

Either a gas range (where you fry eggs) a blow torch or a grill in the oven

Two bowls

Ingredients

2 large aubergines

2 cloves garlic unpeeled. 30g of cannabutter or coconut blend warmed into liquid.

1tsp ground cumin

Salt and black pepper to taste (best from the grinder)

4 large ripe tomatoes or equivalent in cherry tomatoes in 1cm cubes

8 slices of fresh bread (sourdough is a winner here)

4Tbs red wine vinegar or raspberry vinegar

2Tbs olive oil

Method

• Preheat your oven to 180°

• While the oven is heating up, turn on your gas burner (or blow torch) and place the aubergines directly onto the flames.

• Turn the aubergines occasionally but the idea is to char the entire skin surface. Once the skin is charred place the aubergines into the oven for 20 minutes to cook completely.

• Add the cloves of garlic to the oven to roast for 20 minutes. Just remember to keep the peel on.

• While the aubergines are roasting, place the cubed tomatoes into a mixing bowl and add the vinegar and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and toss well. Set aside to pickle.

• Once the aubergines are cooked through and are now soft you can remove them from the oven along with the roasted (soft) garlic cloves.

• Set aside to cool enough to handle and peel/scrape the flesh away from the charred skin. Do not allow it to cool completely as the butter won’t incorporate evenly. It is ok if a little of the skin remains as it will boost the smokiness of the pate. Once the aubergines are peeled, place it into a bowl.

• Using sharp scissors, snip the ends off the garlic cloves and squeeze the garlic from out of the skin. Like squeezing toothpaste from a tube. Add the garlic to the aubergine.

• Use a blender to puree the warm aubergines and garlic until smooth. Add the cumin and the cannabutter and blend until all mixed through.Season with salt and pepper

• Set aside until everything is room temperature and then place the pate into the fridge to set. Once set, place the pate onto toasted sourdough bread or into ramekins and garnish with the pickled tomatoes.

• Pat yourself on the back because you have just made something new. Enjoy it.

STONEY CRAYS

Grilled/ braaied crayfish with beurre blanc (white butter sauce)

Nothing says South Africa quite like biltong or a crayfish braai. This recipe brings out the absolute best that crayfish has to offer while incorporating a classic French sauce to smooth it all over. Whichever method you use to cook the shellfish, this sauce will suit it perfectly. It is excellent with regular line fish too.

I call this recipe Stoney Crays.

Yield: 4 portions

Time: 30 minutes

Works best with two people as the sauce needs to be served as soon as it is done. One cooks the crayfish and the other makes the sauce. If you are fairly good in the kitchen you could do it alone.

Equipment

Sauce pot

Whisk

Stovetop

Grill, braai or frying pan large enough for the crays.

Ingredients

4 whole crayfish or tails

2 Tbs finely diced shallots or baby onions

¼ cup white wine vinegar

½ cup dry white wine

¼ cup heavy cream

200g butter unsalted and cubed (keep chilled in the fridge)

50g cannabutter chilled and cubed (keep it in the fridge)

Salt to taste

Half a lemon

Method

• Butterfly the crayfish by cutting through the outer shell down to but not through the stomach shell.

• Open the crayfish and clean the greeny brown vein from the shellfish, rinse under running water until all removed. Set aside.

72 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com CANNA EATS

• In the saucepan, add the finely diced shallots and the white wine as well as the vinegar and bring to a boil over medium high heat to make a wine reduction.

• Keep the wine mixture boiling until there is only about a third of the original volume left.

• Add in the cream and whisk until mixed and allow it to reduce again until half the volume is left.

• Someone can start cooking the crayfish about now, so they are ready when the sauce is.

• Turn the heat down to very low. This sauce is

temperature sensitive, and the emulsion will break if it gets too hot or cold.

• Remove the butter from the fridge and add the cubes two at a time. Whisk in the two blocks and as soon as they are dissolved mix in the next two. Continue until all the normal butter has been added.

• The sauce at this point should begin to get a thicker and shiny.

• Once the unsalted butter has all been incorporated, remove from the heat, and mix in the cannabutter two cubes at a time. Just

whisk normally, over-whisking will cause the emulsion to split so, just be cool.

• Once the cannabutter is incorporated and the sauce is thicker and silky smooth, squeeze half a lemon into the sauce and gently mix it in.

• Plate your delicious smelling crayfish and dress with the beurre blanc sauce as soon as you can.

• Serve with rice to soak up any butter sauce as that’s where the magic is.

You are welcome.

HIGH CHEESE

Baked pear with gorgonzola in phyllo pastry

This is one of my favourite recipes. It can be served as either a starter or a dessert. This recipe makes use of butter which is a perfect way to take dinner time to new elevations. I call this recipe High cheese.

Yield: 4 portions

Time 30 minutes

Equipment

Oven Baking tray

Sharp knife

Pastry brush

Small sauce pot

A counter space to work.

A palette knife will assist with lifting the pastry, but a butter knife will work too.

Ingredients

4 small pears peeled, cored, and quartered lengthwise (use tinned if not in season)

A roll of phyllo pastry

80g cannabutter melted over gentle heat.

1 wedge gorgonzola cheese (or the same mass at the pears)

Method

• On a clean countertop, unroll the phyllo pastry. Cut the roll in half along the centre fold. Roll up one half and wrap it and place it into the freezer for another recipe. Cut through the other half of the roll so that you have four stacks of pastry sheets roughly the same size. About 15cm on each side.

• Take the first square of pastry (not the stack, take the sheets off the stack) Place it flat onto your work surface and using a pastry brush, brush the entire square with butter.

• Take a second square sheet of phyllo and place it directly onto the buttered square. Try to place it so that the corners make a star shape with eight points.

• Brush the second sheet with butter and place a third sheet onto the second. You can place it in the same position as the first square sheet. Continue until you have four or five sheets on top of each other with butter between each layer.

• Place the pear and cheese into the centre and then lift the corners with a palette knife. Bring all the corners together and then twist the pastry closed to make a pretty buttery parcel. Continue this method until you have four stunning parcels.

• Place them into the fridge for about half an hour. The pastry cooks crisper and better when baked from cold.

• Preheat an oven to 180° Once the oven is at the correct temperature, place the parcels onto a baking tray on the middle shelf and bake these bad boys until they are golden brown like in the picture.

• If serving as a stater, place a spoonful of pesto onto a plate and place the parcel onto the pesto. If serving as a dessert, replace the pesto for something a little sweeter like cranberry sauce or even marmalade. Winning.

efore I begin, let me take you to 2737 BC.

It has been described that during that period, the first direct reference was found in China in the writings of the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung.

The writings focused mainly on its power as a medication for rheumatism, gout, malaria, and funny enough, for absent-mindedness. The importance of medicinal value was focused mainly on the intoxication properties.

MEDICAL BENEFITS OF MARIJUANA

Amongst many other benefits of the herb, here is the list of 20 medical benefits of marijuana you might not be aware of!

THE HEALING PLANT THE TOP 20

SLOWS AND STOPS CANCER CELLS FROM SPREADING

It was found in the study, published in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, that Cannabidiol has the ability to stop cancer by turning off a gene called Id-1. In 2007, researchers at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco reported that CBD may prevent cancer from spreading. The researchers experimented on breast cancer cells in the lab that had high levels of Id-1, and treated them with cannabidiol. The outcome was positive, the cells had decreased Id-1. In fact, the American Association for Cancer Research found that marijuana actually works to slow down tumour growth in brain, breast, and lungs considerably.

PREVENT ALZHEIMER’S

THC, the active ingredient present in marijuana slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. A 2006 study led by Kim Janda of the Scripps Research Institute found out THC slows the formation of amyloid plaques by blocking the enzyme in the brain that makes them. These plaques kill the brain cells that potentially lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

TREAT GLAUCOMA

MEDICINAL FACTS ABOUT MARIJUANA 1 2 3

Marijuana can be used to treat glaucoma, which increases the pressure in the eyeball, injuring the optic nerve and causing loss of vision. Studies in the early 1970s showed that marijuana when smoked, lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with normal pressure and those with glaucoma. These effects of the drug can prevent blindness.

RELIEVES ARTHRITIS

In 2011, researchers reported that cannabis reduces pain and inflammation, and promotes sleep, which may help relieve pain and discomfort for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers of the rheumatology units at several hospitals gave their patients Sativex, a cannabinoidbased pain-relieving medicine. After two weeks, patients on Sativex had a significant reduction in pain and improved better sleep quality compared to placebo users.

CONTROLS EPILEPTIC SEIZURES

A 2003 study showed that marijuana use can control epileptic seizures. Robert J. DeLorenzo, of Virginia Commonwealth University, gave marijuana extract and synthetic marijuana to epileptic rats. The drugs stopped the seizures in about 10 hours. THC controlled seizures by binding the brain cells responsible for controlling excitability and regulating relaxation. The results were published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.

EASES THE PAIN OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Marijuana works to stop the negative neurological effects and muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis. A study published in the Canadian Medical Association suggests that marijuana may ease painful symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Jody Cory Bloom studied 30 multiple sclerosis patients with painful contractions in their muscles. These patients didn’t respond to other medications, but after smoking marijuana for few days, they reported that they were in less pain. The THC in the pot bonds the receptors in the nerves and muscles to relieve pain.

SOOTHES TREMORS FOR PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE

Recent studies from Israel shows that smoking marijuana remarkably reduces pains and tremors and improves sleep for Parkinson’s disease patients. What was impressive about the research was the improvement of the fine motor skills among patients. Israel has made medical marijuana legal, and a lot of research into the medical uses of weed is done there, supported by the Israeli Government.

HELPS WITH CROHN’S DISEASE

Cannabis may be helpful in curing Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disorder that causes pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, and more. A recent study in Israel showed that smoking a joint considerably reduced Crohn’s disease symptoms in 10 out of 11 patients, and caused a complete cancellation of the disease in five of those patients. The cannabinoids from cannabis seem to help the gut control bacteria and intestinal function.

DECREASE THE SYMPTOMS OF DRAVET’S SYNDROME

Dravet’s Syndrome causes seizures and severe developmental delays. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, renowned chief medical correspondent for CNN, treated a five years old girl, Charlotte Figi, who had Dravet’s Syndrome, with medical marijuana strain high in cannabidiol and low in THC. During the research for his documentary “WEED”, Gupta interviewed the Figi family, and according to the film, the drug decreased her seizures from 300 a week to just one every seven days. The cannabidiol in the plant interacts with the brain cells to quiet the excessive activities in the brain that causes seizures.

REDUCES SIDE EFFECTS FROM TREATING HEPATITIS C

Treating Hepatitis C infection has severe side effects, so severe that many people are unable to continue their treatment. Side effects range from fatigue, nausea, muscle pains, loss of appetite, and depression- and they last for months. But, pot to the rescue: A 2006 study in the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology discovered that 86% of patients using marijuana successfully finished their therapies, while only 29% of the non-smokers completed their treatments, maybe because marijuana helps to lessen the treatments’ side effects.

DECREASES ANXIETY

In 2010, researchers at Harvard University suggested that another of the drug’s benefits may actually be reduced anxiety, which would improve the smoker’s mood and act as a sedative in low doses. Beware, though, higher doses may increase anxiety and make you paranoid. HELP

REVERSE THE CARCINOGEN EFFECTS OF TOBACCO, AND IMPROVE LUNG HEALTH

In January 2012, a study published in Journal of the American Medical Association showed that marijuana improved lung functions, and even increased lung capacity. Researchers looking for risks factors of heart disease, tested on 5,115 young adults, over the period of 20 years, and found out that only pot users showed an increase in lung capacity, compared to the tobacco smokers who lost lung function over time.

REDUCE SEVERE PAIN, AND NAUSEA FROM CHEMO, AND STIMULATES APPETITE

One of the most common uses of medical marijuana is for people going through chemotherapy. Cancer patients going through chemo suffer from severe pains, painful nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. This can lead to further health complications. Marijuana helps reduce these side effects, reducing pain, decreasing nausea, and stirring up the appetite. Also, there are other FDA-approved cannabinoid drugs that use THC, for the same purposes.

HELP PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM PTSD

Marijuana is approved to treat PTSD in many countries now. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is the number one reason for people to get a license for medical marijuana, especially in the USA and Mexico which approved a proposal that incorporates smoked or vaporized marijuana.

CONTROLS OTHER TYPES OF MUSCLE SPASMS

Other types of muscle spasms respond to marijuana too. Dr. Gupta’s patient, Chaz, has a condition called myoclonus diaphragmatic flutter (also known as Leeuwenhoek’s Disease). This causes non-stop spasming in the abdominal muscles which are not only painful but interfere with breathing and speaking. Chaz has been using medical marijuana to treat this disease because other very strong medications were unable to treat him properly. Smoking marijuana is able to calm the attacks almost immediately, relaxing the muscles of the diaphragm also.

IMPROVE SYMPTOMS OF LUPUS, AN AUTOIMMUNE DISORDER.

Medical marijuana is used to treat the autoimmune disorder called Systemic Lupus Ertyhematosus, which is when the body starts attacking itself for unknown reasons. It is believed that some chemicals present in cannabis are responsible to calm the immune system, which may be the reason to help deal with symptoms of Lupus.

TREAT INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASES

Just like Crohn’s disease, patients with other inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis could benefit from marijuana use, studies suggest. In 2010, University of Nottingham researchers found that chemicals in marijuana interact with cells in the body that play an important role in gut function, and the immune system. THC-like chemicals made by the body increase the permeability of the intestines, allowing bacteria in. The plant-derived cannabinoids in marijuana block these body cannabinoids, stopping this permeability, and making the intestinal bond tighter together.

PROTECTS BRAIN AFTER A STROKE.

Research from the University of Nottingham shows that cannabis helps protect the brain from damage caused by a stroke by reducing the size of the area affected by the stroke. This isn’t the only research that has shown neuroprotective effects of cannabis. Some research shows that the plant may help protect the brain after other traumatic events like concussions.

HELP ELIMINATE NIGHTMARES

People who suffer from serious nightmares, especially patients with PTSD can be helped by the Herb. By interrupting REM sleep, many of these dreams may not occur. Marijuana may be a better sleep aid than some other medications or even alcohol because the latter two may potentially have worse effects on sleep.

PROTECT THE BRAIN FROM CONCUSSION AND TRAUMA

A recent study in the journal Cerebral Cortex showed possibilities that marijuana can help heal the brain after a concussion, or other traumatic injuries. In the journal, it was said that the experiments were done on mice and that marijuana lessened the bruising of the brain, and helped with healing mechanisms after a traumatic injury.

These 20 medical benefits of marijuana are among the countless benefits this plant has. It is still puzzling how medical marijuana is still not legal in many countries and still retains a negative reputation.

Hopefully, in the near future, medical science continues to prove its benefits in more fields and make this plant a famous cure for all major kinds of ailments.

LEGAL MATTERS

THE ARGUMENTS AGAINST & IN SUPPORT OF THE GROW CLUB MODEL

Following the feature in this edition of SEED INC on Neil Lindell and his harrowing time regarding the Haze Club and his arrest, we asked Stefan JF Bezuidenhout, the Managing Director at SJF Attorneys Inc. to give us the legal breakdown on Grow Clubs as he sees it.

BACKGROUND:

The number of so-called “Grow Clubs” have increased dramatically over the last few years with many fixed on taking advantage of the 2018 Constitutional Court Judgment wherein it decriminalised the personal use and possession of cannabis for adults in private (hereinafter the “Con-Court Judgment”). A “Grow Club” Model is in essence, a socialised system of Cannabis cultivation in terms of which the club rents out private space to the club’s members by means of a sublease, wherein the members grow their own Cannabis for personal consumption, while employing the club as professional horticulturalists to attend to the cultivation of the plants for his or her own consumption.

However, section 1(1) of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act

140 of 1992 (hereinafter the “Drugs Act”) defines undesirable dependence-producing substances as any substance or any plant from which a substance can be manufactured included in Part III of Schedule 2. Cannabis was listed in Part III of Schedule 2 as enacted by Parliament and has remained so listed ever since. Section 4(b) of the Drugs Act prohibits the use or possession of Cannabis and section 5(b) of the Drugs Act prohibits dealing in Cannabis unless one or more of the listed exceptions apply. The term “deal in” in relation to a drug is defined to include “performing any act in connection with the transhipment, importation, cultivation, collection, manufacture, supply, prescription, administration, sale, transmission or exportation of the drug.”

Consequently, on 13 October 2020, a search at a grow club called ‘The Haze Club’ (currently challenging its right to exist in the Supreme Court of Appeal and hereinafter referred to as “THC”), took place and the owner and an employee were arrested by members of the South African Police Services (‘SAPS’).

On 29 August 2022, The Western Cape High Court declared Grow Clubs to be illegal,

stating that “To allow a grow club model ... to operate in the absence of statutory and/or legal regulations and guidelines could have the practical effect of legalising dealing in Cannabis”. However, in granting leave to appeal the Judgment, the High Court recognised that there are reasonable prospects of success that an appeal court could find that the High Court erred by failing to apply the justification enquiry. Therefore, the legality of grow clubs is currently being considered by the Supreme Court of Appeal by Neil Tristan Liddell & Ben Adam Van Houten.

THC seeks declarations in terms of s 172(1)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (hereinafter the “Constitution”), that s 4(b) of the Drugs Act read with Part III of Schedule 2 and s 5(b) of the Drugs Act read with the definition of ‘deal in’, which criminalise, respectively, (a) the possession of cannabis for their own consumption by an adult person, through the ‘grow club model’ and (b) the cultivation of cannabis for personal consumption by an adult person, through the ‘grow club model’, to be inconsistent with the Constitution and therefore, invalid.

The state opposes this position since not a single act necessary for the propagation cultivation, harvesting, drying, and curing of the cannabis is necessarily performed by the members of a club. The state’s view is that Grow Clubs possess cannabis seeds for members in contravention of s 4(b) of the Drugs Act and is the Con-Court Judgment confined to possession of cannabis by an adult in private for his or her personal consumption in private.

SOME REASONS IN SUPPORT OF THE GROW CLUB MODEL:

1. That the demand for grow clubs arose from many people allegedly lacking the time, space, expertise, or funds to cultivate good quality cannabis for personal consumption themselves. Others have stated they cannot safely grow their own Cannabis due to the number of children living in their households. The Con-Court Judgment explained that “as long as the use or possession of Cannabis is in private and not in public and the use or possession of Cannabis is for the personal consumption of an adult, it is protected”.

82 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com CANNALAW

2. That the right to private use of Cannabis has been subject to a major practical limitation –the user must cultivate their own Cannabis. A citizen can still not use or possess Cannabis unless they cultivated it themselves. The state argues that the Drugs Act makes it a crime for people who want to consume Cannabis in private but cannot cultivate it, and people who want to cultivate Cannabis, to work together through Grow Clubs. THC wants the difficulties of regulating Grow Clubs to be solved through regulation, not through criminalisation.

3. Grow Clubs do not source their own seeds, they rely on members to provide seeds. They do not sell Cannabis – they sell space and labour. In short, (i) members grow their own Cannabis via proxy; (ii) members rent space from the Grow Club; (iii) members employ the Grow Club to cultivate the Cannabis for them; and (iv) members only receive the cultivated Cannabis they provided to the Club.

4. Relying on: (a) the right to freedom of trade; (b) the right to bodily and psychological integrity; (c) the right to dignity; and (d) the right to equality and nondiscrimination, it argues that the criminalisation of Grow Clubs is to make it impossible, in practice, for people to use Cannabis at all.

5. That the Constitutional Court sees no problem if each and every adult South African cultivates, possesses and uses Cannabis in the privacy of their own home. Grow Clubs in general merely seek to overcome the practical barrier that some people have in

exercising their right “to use or cultivate or possess Cannabis in private for his or her personal consumption”.

6. To prove that it is not constitutionally defensible to recognise that adults are allowed to possess and use Cannabis in private, but then to make it impossible for them to do so.

SOME REASONS THE STATE OPPOSES THE GROW CLUB MODEL:

1. The primary purpose of the state’s opposition is the general one of preventing dealing in Cannabis, presumably to prevent harm. The Con-Court Judgment accepted this was a valid purpose. According to the state, Cannabis for consumption by others, may be an element of the trade in Cannabis and dealing in Cannabis is a serious problem in South Africa. It further contends that Cannabis illegally grown in South Africa fuels a substantial illicit trade in both South Africa and abroad.

2. If Grow Clubs are permitted, the policing (detection and combatting) of illegal dealing in Cannabis; in a context where large scale cannabis cultivation for non-medial or non-research purposes remains prohibited, will become very difficult and costly. The setting up and implementation of any such system in the current legislative environment would be expensive and difficult because of the potential for corruption in what would be a high-value industry producing the same product as the illicit drug trade.

3. A Grow Club would cultivate cannabis plants for its members in contravention of s 5(b) of the Drugs Act. Grow Club model entails, through its director and employees, cultivating cannabis for its members, from start to finish. The members themselves do not perform any of the acts necessary for the propagation, cultivation, harvesting, drying and curing of their cannabis. Sections 4(b) and 5(b) of the Drugs Act prohibit the non-medicinal use and possession of cannabis and the non-medicinal dealing in cannabis unless it is covered by the Con-Court Judgment alterations.

4. The Con-Court Judgment alterations is limited to permitting the cultivation of cannabis by an adult for his or her personal consumption. It does not permit an adult cannabis horticulturist or gardener to cultivate cannabis for consumption by another adult unless the horticulturist or gardener is a person mentioned in s 5(b)(iii) of the Drugs Act.

5. That there is no direct unfair discrimination and denies any infringement of the rights to choose a trade, occupation, or profession, as alleged by THC.

6. A cannabis grow club ‘closely resembles‘ an illegal growing operation in the sense that it entails the cultivation of large quantities of cannabis and that Cannabis grow clubs are open to abuse, both by their operators and by their members.

7. The principle of the separation of powers requires that the Executive and Parliament, and not the courts, should determine whether cannabis grow clubs are to be decriminalised, and if so, how they should be regulated.

8. Persons can cultivate small quantities of cannabis for their own consumption quickly, easily, and cheaply in small spaces and members use Grow Clubs because it is a convenient way for others to grow cannabis for them, not because they genuinely could not cultivate their own cannabis.

CBD AND OUR FLUFFY ONES

CBD AND OUR FLUFFY ONES

SEED INC calls on Sharn Stead from

et’s talk about Cannabis and CBD in particular, and how it can potentially aid your furry friends. As we know, humans can benefit greatly from using CBD products for a variety of ailments or reasons, but did you know that your family pets can also benefit?

Animals, like humans, have an endocannabinoid system and are very receptive to CBD treatment. In our experience, the results are positive, and we have more and more pet owners with a variety of furry friends, big and small seeking a reliable, consistent CBD product.

Just like us, animals can also respond differently to CBD. It is therefore very important to ensure that the oils you consider using are supplied by a registered company that has certification and lab analysis. The product should be Full Spectrum Oil, not an isolate or derivative, as the full benefits of CBD will potentially not be seen. The product should be clearly labelled and state what the carrier oil is as well as the CBD content and recommended mg dosage. As a responsible fur baby owner, you need to know what you are giving your pets.

Cannabis is a natural anti-inflammatory and CBD oils are often recommended for treating degrees of pain management. For example, the treatment of arthritis, hip dysplasia, and any other

inflammation that causes pain. It has been used for treating stress and separation anxiety, especially in dogs, where they pace, bark and show fear or aggression. Please note that some behavioural training may also be required – for the pet and owner!

In dementia cases, CBD oil helps with calming. Where there is nerve damage, such as with the spinal cord, higher or more frequent doses may be needed and have been shown to help with degrees of repair. In older animals, especially where there may be renal issues, lethargy and poor appetite, CBD oil can help to boost metabolism. There has been great success in treating epilepsy and in low doses, can be used in conjunction with chemical medication. Topically, balms are used to treat cancerous growths, especially sarcoid carcinoma in horses, as well as for wound care, hot spots, and the like. CBD can also be used as a preventative treatment, for general health and wellness.

In our experience, the most frequently asked questions and the top of the list is: Is CBD safe for animals? Absolutely, yes, if it has a trace or very low THC content. THC in high amounts can potentially be toxic to animals and should only be used in extreme cases such as cancers and palliative situations, but opinions do differ on the topic of THC. It does benefit in extreme

85 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com CANNAWOOF

Does weight play a role? Yes, to a degree. Animals metabolize CBD at a faster rate than humans, as they have more receptors, so they generally need lower doses and results are typically seen within a few days. You will need to monitor your pet to see how they are responding. Cats for example may only need a low dose, whereas horses may need a higher dosage.

Can my pet overdose on CBD? No. If they are given too much product, they may be a bit nauseous, potentially vomit and sleep for a few hours. We had a case of a ridgeback that ate a bottle of oil – completely in error - and just slept for a few hours.

There is more chance of your pets being overdosed on chemical medication.

Can CBD be used before a surgical procedure? As a precaution, it is not recommended for 24 hours before surgery as it could potentially cause the blood to thin slightly. But can be used for pain management afterwards.

What do the Veterinarians think about CBD? Scientific research in the veterinary field with regards to Cannabis and animals is lacking, but we are finding more Vets are open to the use of CBD, especially with regards to comfort and quality of life and in cases where chemical

86 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com CANNAWOOF

medication is too costly or not working.

Are there any negative effects from CBD? There is debate with regards to liver function in animals and prolonged use of CBD Oils. Some research shows slightly diminished function; however, more research is required in this field. American studies have shown that animals that are generally healthy, tolerate treatment well.

In conclusion, examples of animal clients (and by default their humans) that we have helped include conditions related to arthritis, joint pain, hip dysplasia, and related issues. Our oils, supplements and animal edibles have helped with pain and inflammation, as well as general

mood. Animals can also suffer from pain related depression and once the pain is managed, their mood improves. We have had beloved pets with cancer needing additional support to complement the chemical medication and, in some cases, the chemical medication has been dramatically reduced, therefore putting less strain on the liver and kidneys, thus providing great comfort in the final stages of life.

Anxious cats and hyped up yorkies with separation anxiety have benefitted from our pet range, even a cuddly rat who needed his nails clipped. Horses with sarcoid carcinomas on the abdominal and face areas have been successfully treated with oils and balms in a matter of

weeks. In these cases, the Vets were open to using and experimenting with our CBD range, as nothing else had worked and they were looking at extreme surgery and treatment. Our final words of advice. If you are considering a CBD treatment for your pet, please speak to a reputable supplier, and get all the information you require. Ask your Vet their opinion, especially if your pet has an underlying health condition and is on large quantities of medication.

PROGRESS LOOKS PROMISING

The Cannabis Sector stands identified as one of 14 priority sectors in the Country Investment Strategy thanks to how it can help create jobs, support livelihoods, and allow human rights to be recognised. Ultimately, Cannabis offers a unique opportunity to engage with and find solutions for the many problems our young democracy continues to face.

To speed up the legislative changes needed to enable the Cannabis and Hemp sector, the Department of Agriculture Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) and the office of the Presidency recently called for an ‘Action Lab’, which was held from the 19th to the 23rd of June. The outcomes of this gathering signal a positive shift towards regulatory reforms, investment support, and the establishment of legalisation for trade in medicinal, industrial and recreational cannabis.

Known as a ‘Phakisa’ (which means “hurry up” in Sesotho), this 5-day workshop brought together more than 100 participants representing a vast array of key stakeholders, with the aim to secure much-needed policy coherence and agreement for the sector. The primary objective was to achieve agreement on policy changes and develop a comprehensive plan of well-defined activities across multiple government

departments. The Cannabis Trade Association Africa (CTAA) was invited to attend and was well represented by our chairperson Mr Tebogo Tholpane as well as board member Linda Siboto.

The action lab focused on interim steps that could be taken to accelerate legislative changes in the sector and it aimed to explore and remove bottlenecks to progress. Significant strides were made as decision-makers and prominent stakeholders unpacked the various issues, challenges, and action steps were well noted. In attendance were representatives from the highest levels of all the respective government departments that Cannabis and Hemp apply to.

While the significant economic potential and benefits of the cannabis and hemp industry have long been heralded as a lifeline that may yet save our struggling country, little or no tangible legislative action has been implemented thus far since decriminalization happened in 2018, save for a very poor Cannabis for Private Purposes bill which still requires much work.

Although it took some heated discussion and a fair amount of deep breathing and patience, it seems that our lawmakers and leaders heard the voice of reason and the decision was taken to fast-track the removal of cannabis from the National Drugs and Drugs Trafficking Control Act and this was

possibly the biggest interim ‘quick-win’ achievement at the event. This key step will legalize the cultivation of non-medicinal cannabis under the terms and conditions of the Plant Improvement Act, falling under the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD).

Other highlights from this groundbreaking workshop were:

General reforms and clarity on Cannabis definitions and usage: Participants reached a consensus on the regulatory reforms required to unlock the potential of the hemp and cannabis sectors. These reforms aim to enable cannabis usage across the board in African traditional medicine, pharmaceutical and complementary medicines, industrial applications, and adult recreational use. As part of the reforms, the schedules to the Medicines Act will be reviewed, allowing cannabis cultivation for non-medicinal purposes, including industrial uses. This shift will empower the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) to focus on their mandate which is ‘medicinal’ cannabis while other government departments regulate cannabis grown for industrial and recreational purposes.

Amendments to the draft Cannabis for Private Purposes Bill:

The Cannabis for Private

Purposes Bill, which has faced criticism for its lack of constitutionality, will be sent back to the drawing board for revision. The aim is to bring the bill more in alignment with the Constitutional Court’s 2018 order, removing elements such as the Hemp and Traditional Use clauses. The plant-counting nature of the bill is also under scrutiny, which will hopefully be removed.

Investment and Financing:

The Phakisa identified the importance of supporting private-sector investment in the cannabis industry. To achieve this, existing catalytic projects will be scaled up, financing frameworks will be optimized to support Black farmers and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and pragmatic interventions will be implemented to promote investment, exports, and standards. Partnerships between government and the private sector will be explored with such institutions and parties like InvestSA, Wesgro and the Cannabis and Hemp investment fund, SilverLeaf Investments.

Patient Access and incorporating Traditional Healers:

There was an emphasis on issues like the Section 21 process for patient authorization to use non-registered medicine, and indigenous or cultural

heritage rights with regards to cannabis were tabled, and a better perspective of process errors was identified. The Section 21 process and procedures exclude the demographic of rural traditional healers who have supplied the unregistered cannabis sector for decades. These issues were brought to light, and we feel confident that drastic changes are on the horizon.

A sense of coherence and a focus on attainable and realistically achievable objectives has been laid out.

are realistic in our understanding of the timelines and what is involved to achieve this.

Now is the time to join our association as we call for collaboration and strength in numbers to ensure that we get the most ideal legislation possible. South Africa has the opportunity to be world leaders in this regard and this sector, and to enable and enact some of the most progressive legislation in the world. And the CTAA is there to assist with input from trade and industry.

It is now in the hands of all cannabis businesses and community members to rally support and unify, as we move into a new era.

The Phakisa has provided the CTAA with an opportunity to bring the voice of our members to the table and the attention of decision-makers and legislators. Our primary focus is on how to enable commercialization and trade for the sector. We are cautiously optimistic that the outcomes reached and the goals set at this event will lead to a good enabling legislative framework, but

We look forward to the day we can shift our focus from lobbying and litigation for the laws we want to be able to promote, facilitate and enable trade.

Membership applications can be made using the easy-to-use links provided on our website. A number of affordable options are available, and we are just a click away should you have any questions or queries. Join the movement and become part of the solution. The responsibility falls on each of us to reach out and unite, as we herald in a new age of green!

IS A TOOL FOR I

RURAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the potential socio-economic benefits of cannabis in rural areas. The changing legislation has sparked a wave of opportunities for rural communities to leverage this plant as a tool for development. From job creation to increased tax revenue and tourism, cannabis is proving to be a game-changer for many rural areas. In this article, we will explore how cannabis can serve as a catalyst for rural socioeconomic development by empowering communities to own the full value chain from seed to final product.

One of the most significant advantages of cannabis legalisation is the establishment of community-owned businesses and the creation of jobs in rural areas. Cultivation, processing, manufacturing, distribution and retailing of cannabis all require a workforce, and these employment opportunities can inject muchneeded income into rural communities. Unlike traditional agricultural crops, cannabis offers

higher returns per hectare, which can help revitalise struggling rural economies. The establishment of cannabis farms and related businesses can provide steady employment for locals, reduce unemployment rates, provide medicinal and industrial products and improve the overall quality of life in these areas.

Moreover, the cannabis industry has the potential to generate substantial tax revenue. Taxation on cannabis sales and production can be a significant source of income for government, allowing them to invest in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other essential services. This additional revenue stream can help bridge funding gaps and support the development of rural communities that have long been overlooked or underfunded.

Tourism is another area where cannabis can contribute to rural socio-economic development. With the rise of cannabis tourism around the world, rural areas with legal cannabis markets have seen an influx of visitors seeking unique experiences related to the

plant. From guided tours of cannabis farms to educational workshops and even cannabisfriendly accommodation, these rural destinations are capitalising on the growing interest in cannabis. This trend not only brings in additional revenue but also promotes local businesses, including restaurants, hotels, and recreational activities, creating a ripple effect that benefits the entire community.

South Africa’s unique landrace cultivars are already world famous and when combined with our breathtaking scenery, they offer a unique selling point for cannabis tourism and cannabis products on the global stage.

Cannabis can be a tool for diversifying rural economies that heavily rely on traditional industries such as subsistence farming or animal husbandry. By embracing cannabis cultivation and related businesses, rural communities can reduce their dependency on a single industry and build a more resilient and sustainable economy.

The versatility of cannabis products, including hemp-derived products like textiles, construction materials, and biofuels, provides an opportunity for rural areas to explore new markets and expand their economic horizons. It also provides an opportunity for rural communities to own the full value chain and create circular economies that accelerate growth and development. Again, it is South Africa’s unique landrace cultivars that will create unique

products for local and international markets.

For this to all work, it is essential to invest in education and training programmes to equip rural residents with the necessary skills and knowledge to participate in the evolving cannabis industry. This must involve partnerships between educational institutions, experienced industry stakeholders, traditional leaders, and government agencies to provide training on cultivation techniques, processing and manufacturing methods, marketing strategies, and regulatory compliance. By empowering local residents with the tools needed to own the value chain and succeed in the cannabis sector, rural communities can ensure that the benefits of this emerging industry are shared equitably.

In conclusion, cannabis has the potential to be a powerful tool for rural socio-economic development. Through job creation, tax revenue generation, tourism promotion, and economic diversification, rural communities can leverage the cannabis industry to revitalize their economies and improve the well-being of their residents. However, it is crucial to approach cannabis legalisation with careful planning, responsible regulation, and investment in education and training. By doing so, rural areas can unlock the full potential of cannabis as a catalyst for positive change and sustainable development.

HISTORY OF THE HERB

SCIENTISTS DID A MASSIVE DNA STUDY ON GLOBAL WEED STRAINS. HERE’S WHAT THEY FOUND

BB

ecky Ferreira writes for www.vice.com about an analysis of 110 cannabis genomes that have upended prevailing assumptions about the plant’s history of cultivation.

Cannabis sativa, the plant that has gifted the world hemp, pot, and countless other earthly delights, is a modern cash crop with a rich history of cultivation that dates back thousands of years. But even as new cannabis strains are constantly bred for psychoactive or medicinal effects,

the origins of domesticated cannabis remain murky, in part due to legal restrictions that prohibit scientists from acquiring plant samples.

An international team of scientists has spent years overcoming the red tape on these green weeds in order to present “a unique global view of the domestication of C. sativa,” along with “valuable genomic resources” for research into its modern breeds, according to a study published in Science Advances.

94 SEED INC. ISSUE 1 seedinconline.com CANNAHERB

By analyzing 110 whole genomes of C. sativa sourced from all around the world, the researchers traced the plant’s cultivation back more than 12,000 years. Their results reveal that four genetic groups of domesticated cannabis stemmed from a single ancestral origin in northwest China, which challenges a widely held view that C. sativa emerged from a Central Asian center of crop domestication.

The new research is “the largest survey with genomes from such geographically diverse origins and such diverse domestication types”—including feral plants, traditional landraces, and historical and modern cultivated varieties—”which is necessary for such a comparative investigation of the domestication origin of a cultivated species,” said senior author Luca Fumagalli, a professor of ecology and evolution at the University of Lausanne, in an email.

Of the 110 genomes collected for the study, 82 were new samples sourced from field sites and commercial stores in Switzerland, China, India, Pakistan, and Peru, as well as from the Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The team, which was led by Lanzhou University biologist Guangpeng Ren, also re-analyzed 28 publicly available genomes, most of which belonged to North American breeds.

“It is very difficult to obtain hemp and especially drug-type samples and feral plants” which are “ancient domesticated plants readapted to the wild environment” from “non-Western countries, due to legal restrictions,” Fumagalli noted. He added that the team “had to

convince and establish collaborations with local scientists in several key countries” and rely on the Vavilov Institute “to get seeds originating from many countries where field collection of cannabis plants is difficult.”

“All in all, this took several years,” he said.

Fortunately, the team’s time and energy paid off, as the varied set of genomes tell a fascinating tale about the domestication and cultivation history of C. sativa. According to the study, two lineages diverged from wild cannabis plants about 12,000 years ago: Basal cannabis, which still exists as a feral species in China and the US today, and a second group that was probably bred as a multipurpose crop with textile, nutritional, and medicinal properties.

About 4,000 years ago, that second lineage split again into two distinct groups: hemp breeds that were selected for fibre production and marijuana breeds that were selected for the production of cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the plant’s primary psychoactive compound. The fourth lineage identified by the team is a branch of the drug-type breed that went feral and now grows south of the Himalayas. Meanwhile, the ancestral wild cannabis plant that gave rise to these four lineages has likely become extinct.

Interesting insights were hidden in the genes of the hemp and marijuana groups, which both lost functional genes that had been present in their

WHOLE

drug-type plants,” Fumagalli explained.

Perhaps the biggest surprise, however, was the discovery of the Basal group, which includes 14 feral plants and landraces collected in China and two feral plants from the United States that likely migrated across the ocean sometime in the 19th century.

“An unexpected result was the presence of this Basal genetic group, which did not comprise any of the domesticated plants we consider today as Cannabis sativa (hemp or marijuana),” Fumagalli said. “It’s a bit like discovering a dog breed unknown to date and genetically independent from the genetic cluster grouping all dog breeds described today worldwide.”

multipurpose ancestors as a result of their increasingly specialized use as either a fibre source or as a psychoactive substance.

“This suggests an ancestral situation (in the wild species) with both genes in a functional state, an intermediate situation just before or after the beginning of domestication (similar to what observed today in plants from the Basal group), and a progressive loss of one or another gene after strong divergent selection started for either fibre-type plants or

Previous studies based on feral plant studies have suggested that C. sativa was first domesticated by peoples living in Central Asia, but Fumagalli and his colleagues propose that the crop emerged from a fairly narrow region of East Asia in northwest China, where the elusive Basal group still grows. In addition to conducting further genomic analyses on this controversial, beloved, and increasingly influential plant, the researchers hope to track down the exact region where its many powers were first discovered and harnessed by humans. “Clearly, this is a key geographical area, and future additional sampling here could more precisely show where plants from the Basal group are distributed,” Fumagalli concluded.

GIVE WEED A BAD NAME

he thing about brainwashing is when it’s your brain being washed it feels kinda clean and righteous…when the whole planet buys into the lie that cannabis is a plant for demons then we are confronted by some powerful collective prejudice. It does no one any favours when cousin Barry can’t stop banging on about how kiff his ‘wake-and-bake’ session was that morning – all the while coughing like a dying diesel engine. Barry has always had an IQ that would make a bonobo blush, so weed was never going to set him straight. The problem is all his relatives think his retardation is down to the ‘evil’ plant he advocates for rather than his impossibly murky gene pool. This stereotype is played out repeatedly in films, television

shows and across popular culture so much so that it becomes fact despite not being in the slightest bit true.

The fact is many people are lucky enough to use cannabis as their medicine – the benefits of which are finally being recognised and scientifically studied for the first time in our long history with the plant. A friend of mine is a terrifyingly clever Actuary who runs a very successful business employing loads of other brilliant minds – and he consumes a healthy amount of medical-grade cannabis throughout the day to keep him focused. His colleagues have no problem with it because his work is truly excellent and prolific. Another mate – a farmer only employs tractor drivers and other operators of heavy machinery who partake of the

herb, since they are more careful with his infrastructure and the equipment needed to maintain it – this would be unremarkable except he is one of the country’s most successful farmers. I could go on listing examples of excellence inspired by the homeostasis achieved through well stimulated CB1 and CB2 receptors, but you get the point.

When it comes to booze –weed’s evil step-brother – the marketing denizens would have us believe a few sips of Mainstay and you are literally a cross between James Bond and Bear Grylls – when the reality is at once droller and more sinister. How products are portrayed in the media often dictates how people perceive them to be – this is the reason we have advertising. Cannabis needs more positive role models to step forward and honestly say what positive outcomes have been produced through their conscious consumption. Consumption and abuse are separate magisteria and must be regarded as such. Get wasted on weed if you must, but don’t use it as an excuse any more than any of the other choices you make in terms of diet, thoughts and deeds. Cannabis will transform many lives – most for the better, some not. Cannabis enables many to have Agency over their lives, but this is not something the media often highlights.

The responsibility to influence the narrative around weed lies mostly with us – the lovers of the plant. There is ample space to explore and celebrate the wonders of the Rastafarian faith and to respect their regard for

cannabis as the holiest sacrament, without discounting anyone else’s way of using the tree of wisdom. Cannabis cannot be compared with other substances like alcohol since its long terms effects on work performance are completely different. Over time many devotees of the herb start using less or often take breaks from its magical powers. THC stays in your system for up to a month, while its transformative effects are felt for a few hours at most. You also don’t get too many folks smashing a massive bong and then hitting the late-night illegal drag races for a laugh. Cannabis makes users cerebral, euphoric and reflective – not exactly the characteristics to carry out dastardly or foolish acts –whereas most of our bad decisions have involved booze and her evil sidekicks.

Having partaken of most that is unholy I cannot point fingers at anyone – least of all my eternally thirsty brethren. But weed is not booze and should be treated and regarded differently. What is good for a laugh is watching an old Toppie who last had weed ‘back in Varsity – I was fortunate to be in Smuts Res you Know?’ have a drag on some 25% THC medical grade dynamite and then forget his name for the next two hours – I shouldn’t laugh, but I do. How is it different to the Dude always trying to force a shooter down your face despite your vocal protestations – except Smutsie asked for it? Let’s all try our best to show the best side of weed without falling into the stereotypes that do none of us any favours?
