In 1948, The Heckart Family made their home here in Sedalia, established their family business, The Heckart Funeral Home, and became pillars of the community They believed their success as a family business was in large part because the community trusted in them and supported them Because of the support of the community, it was their philosophy that they in return give back to those that had supported them for so many years Sue carried on the family’s motto of “We Care, We Share, We Love.” Being a strong business woman, community leader, and philanthropist, Sue wanted nothing more than to bring her parents’ dream of a community center to the people of Sedalia
To honor the legacy of her parents, Del & Stella ,Sue believed that the community deserved a place where everyone can come together to share experiences and create memories while improving the quality of life for all It was with her generous multi-million dollar donation that allowed the Sedalia Parks & Recreation Department the ability to present a 1/8 cent sales tax to help build a Community Center The community overwhelmingly responded with an 80% YES, YES vote.
Sue knows and values the importance of Parks and Recreation and trusts Sedalia Parks & Recreation to honor her parent’s legacy with this outstanding facility that will forever impact the Community of Sedalia Thank you Sue Heckart for your generous gift in honor of your parents Del and Stella Heckart!

Letter From The Director
Welcome to the 2023-24 Fall and Winter Activity Guide. In the pages of this guide, Sedalia residents and visitors of all ages will find returning favorites along with brand new activities, special events, and more. Join us for family-friendly fun as we celebrate the return of Bark in the Park (page 20), make a splash with Heckart Community Center’s popular Ghouls in the Pool (page 9) and dress up in your favorite costumes for Truck or Treat at the Centennial Park (page 21)
As always, we continue to offer adult and youth sports leagues (page 13), swim lessons (page 8), fitness classes, and personal training (page 11) Sign up early as many of these programs fill quickly! With so many options to choose from, you and your family are sure to find fun, enriching programs to enjoy this fall and winter
Soon we bid farewell to warm weather and wave hello to the crisp autumn air. We hope that you will take the time to stroll through the parks and enjoy the changing leaves and nice weather before the winter gets here. Thankfully even when the weather gets bad, we are blessed to have the Heckart Community Center where inside you can still enjoy a safe, comfortable place to walk for free
This fall and winter you will see many projects being worked on throughout the parks. Liberty Stadium renovation will be a two year project, with turf this year along with seating improvements, and parking lot paved the following year All of this is possible thanks to a match grant that the Parks Department received with the help of City and CVB
Liberty playground will begin under construction in late winter/ early spring. Don’t worry… the elephant is staying in Liberty Park!! The new playground will be installed between the large shelter and restrooms, we will leave the old playground up until the new one is completed! Next playground updated after Liberty is Katy in fall of 2024!
The NEW Liberty Train is currently being built in TexasPark Board approved this purchase after the old train did not pass inspection. Unfortunately, it would cost more to repair than purchase a new one This is a custom built train so it takes time, but we are eager to have it back up and running with the hopes of the annual Egg Hunt being its opening debut! The old train will officially be retired but will sit in the train house for photo ops.
Lastly, I want to thank you for your continued support and participation. Our first year at the Heckart Community Center we had over 160,000 participants and at the pace we are going this second year we will surpass that number. This is an exciting time for our community, and I am proud to be a part of it. We offer over 200 programs annually for participants of all ages, and they fill quickly so make sure to register early
The needs and wants of the community continue to change over the years, but the one constant is the spirit of volunteerism within Sedalia I am always impressed and extremely grateful for the amount of residents who generously donate their time. If you have ever coached a team, acted as a race marshal, or assisted at any one of our events and parks we thank you!
Amy Epple, Director of Parks and Recreation
