Seth Stringer/Democrat Hall of Fame linebacker Bobby Bell, right, shows off his non-combatant card to Col. Eric Overturf, left, during Friday's tour Whiteman Air Force Base. Bell got the card during his USO tour in 1968, when he and a star-studded cast of fellow football players visited Saigon during the Vietnam war. Surrounded by friends and family on a tour bus destined for Mission’s End, a popular restaurant located on Whiteman Air Force Base, Bobby Bell checked his wallet first, thought for a second, then searched the left pocket of his black corduroy pants. Cradled in a pair of hands dressed with a Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl ring and an AFL Championship ring, the Hall-of-Fame linebacker pulled out a memento that’s near and dear to his heart, and it just so happened to carry extra meaning on this day when he’s invited his loved ones to tour one the nation’s most renowned Air Force bases. Issued 43 years ago, two years after professional football joined forces with the United Service Organizations (USO), the laminated, yellow non-combatant card is still in pristine shape — almost as much the man carrying it around. At 71, Bell is an age-defying mountain of a man. Granted, he’s not the same guy who sported a 28-inch waist during his 12-year career with the Chiefs. But his 6-foot-4, 220-pound muscular frame, which now requires a 34-inch pant, commands attention when he steps into the room, casting a shadow on everyone and anything in his vicinity. Aside from his white beard and the four grandchildren hanging on his every step on Friday, the Bell could pass for a 50-year old. Or as he likes to joke, even younger. “Who told you I was 71? I tell people I’m 20,” said Bell, who then expanded on the keys to keeping up his youthful appearance. “You’ve got to keep active,” said Bell, who was sporting a Chiefs vest on Friday. “I don’t drink, smoke, do drugs or nothing like that. I’ve never done nor had the desire to do anything like that. You have to learn how to take care of yourself. A lot of guys when they get out of football don’t exercise and eat right, and the next thing you know, boom!” Retirement has obviously been kind to Bell, who, since retiring from football in 1974, hasn’t slowed down. He opened five restaurants, appropriately named Bobby Bell Bar-B-Que, which he eventually sold to spend more time with his family, and he’s become a motivational speaker and ambassador for the Chiefs. The ambassador role is familiar territory for Bell, who has a good story about how he got that non-combatant card. In 1968, after wrapping up his fifth consecutive AFL All-Star selection as a defensive end and outside linebacker, Bell and a star-studded cast of players — Jack Kemp, John David Crow, Andy Russell and Bill Brown — flew to Saigon, Vietnam, to visit American troops in late January as part of a three-and-a-half week goodwill tour. But as they quickly realized, the tour was not a Bob Hope-type excursion spent signing autographs and rattling off jokes and stories from the gridiron. “The day we flew into Vietnam, we

were supposed to have a dinner at 8 o’clock and they moved it to 5 o’clock because there was a curfew,” said Bell, who was the first Chief ever to be inducted into the pro football Hall of Fame and has his No. 78 retired. “That was the night the Tet Offensive (a series of surprise attacks by the Vietcong and North Vietnamese forces on scores of cities, towns and hamlets throughout South Vietnam) broke out. That’s the first night the Vietcong invaded Saigon and that’s the day we pulled in.” Then, as Bell puts, the group “almost got killed.” And it wasn’t just a one-time thing. “At our hotel, a couple of (military policemen) were shot and the Vietcong were shooting all over the building. They got all of us in the same room, in the lounge there, and they had issued us fatigues and boots and a non-combatant card,” said Bell, who was given the honorary classification of colonel on his card. “We were running for our lives. When we went to camps outside of Saigon, we had to fly and they had helicopters drop us off. As we were flying in the helicopter, I was sitting in the middle talking to Jack Kemp and they had these guns on both sides, and all of a sudden I hear (machine gun rounds going off). And then bullets came flying back in. We had guys shooting on the ground at us.” Bell, who resides in Lee’s Summit, can look back now and smile at the circumstances, which made him appreciate Friday’s visit more. With a signed ball in tow that was later presented to Col. Eric Overturf, Bell and his family and friends — including Grandview Mayor Steve Dennis and his wife and two boys — took a six-and-ahalf hour tour of the base that included simulations, a briefing about the A-10 Thunderbolt II jet aircraft, and more than a few laughs generated by Bell, most of which came at Mission’s End. That’s where Bell showed he still has the same reflexes that earned him 40 sacks, 26 interceptions and nine touchdowns during his career. Introducing the room, and more specifically his lunch table full of military officers, to a game that earned him the nickname “chopstick man,” Bell asked for a quarter from Senior Airman Joe Blount. Blount obliged, and then was challenged. With a quarter in the middle of his palm, Blount was tasked with closing his hand before Bell could snatch it with his middle and pointer finger. But he couldn’t close it until Bell made his first move. Guess who won? Bell, dishing out trash talk the whole way through, was successful in all three tries and minutes later, he dispatched another challenger. But it was all in good fun, especially considering the appreciation Bell has for the military. “These guys watch over us and serve their country,” Bell said. “It’s just humbling do be around them.” That’s the same way people feel when they meet Bell.

Add a Flu Shot to Your List of New Year’s Resolutions It’s not too late for family members of all generations to get vaccinated against influenza

(NAPS)—Many Americans associate influenza with the fall, but you may be surprised to learn that during many flu seasons, influenza activity doesn’t peak until winter or early spring. In fact, virus activity peaked in February or later in approximately half of the past 35 flu seasons. That is why the American Lung Association is spreading the message about the importance of influenza vaccination throughout the winter months and beyond as part of its Faces of Influenza campaign. Everyone 6 months of age and older is recommended for annual immunization, which is safe and effective and the best way to help prevent influenza. With vaccination recommended and beneficial into the winter months, make it your New Year’s resolution to get immunized—it’s not too late, and you’ll be helping to protect your health and those around you in one simple and achievable step. After being immunized, it takes about two weeks for the body to develop a protective response to the flu vaccine. Parents—don’t forget that children 6 months through 8 years of age receiving a flu shot for the Faces of Influenza celebrity spokesperfirst time need two doses approx- son Kristi Yamaguchi makes influenza imately one month apart for opti- vaccination a priority every year. mal protection. “We are all ‘faces’ of influenza and are recommended by public health officials to get vaccinated this and every year,” said Norman H. Edelman, M.D., chief medical officer of the American Lung Association. “It’s not too late for family members of all generations to help protect themselves from this potentially deadly disease through immunization.” About Influenza Influenza is a serious respiratory illness that kills thousands annually in the U.S. and hospitalizes even more. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older. Groups at higher risk of developing influenza-related complications include: adults 50 years of age and older; children 6 months to 18 years of age; pregnant women; anyone with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease and diabetes; and residents of longterm care facilities. The CDC also recommends a yearly vaccination for those who come into close contact with high-risk groups, such as household contacts, caregivers and health care providers. For more information about the importance of influenza vaccination into the winter months and early spring, visit www.facesofinfluenza.org. Faces of Influenza is an educational initiative from the American Lung Association, made possible through a collaboration with Sanofi Pasteur.

CELEBRITY EXTRA

Q: Like you, I am an avid fan of "New Girl" on Fox. I was wondering what happened to Coach, the character played by Damon Wayans Jr., who was in the first episode and then suddenly left? -- Giselle F., via e-mail A: When "New Girl" filmed its pilot episode in spring 2011, the original roommates were Coach (played by Damon), Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Nick (Jake Johnson), with Jess (Zooey Deschanel) taking Winston's room, since he was off playing basketball in Latvia. However, Damon also was co-starring on the ABC show "Happy Endings," which at the time "New Girl" began production was looking like it wasn't going to get renewed for another season. So, when "Happy Endings" did indeed get renewed, the producers at "New Girl" had to find a new fourth roommate and opted for Winston (Lamorne Morris) to return from Latvia to reclaim his old room. *** Q: I was super-bummed when I found out that "Cougar Town" wasn't going to air on ABC until January as a midseason replacement, and now I am hearing that that might not even happen! Please tell me it hasn't been canceled. -- Bridget D. in North Carolina A: I have good news and bad news: The goods news is that "Cougar Town" will be back this season; the bad news is its return has been pushed back until March. More bad news: Instead of its planned 22-episode season, the order has been cut to 15 episodes. This news makes me super-bummed too, as I have been going through some serious withdrawals, and have been forced to drink wine out of Big Joe while reading Laurie Keller's hilarious Twitter feed (twitter.com/TheLarmy) and throwing pennies in my Bobby Cobb Official Competition Penny Can as I wait with bated breath for new episodes from my favorite Pinot-swilling gals and their awesome sidekick fellas. *** Q: A while back you mentioned

Zooey Deschanel

that Fox was going to make an animated version of "Napoleon Dynamite." Are those plans still going forward? -- Jeremy G., via e-mail A: It's full-steam ahead on the weekly cartoon adaption of "Napoleon Dynamite," which will be voiced by the movie's stars, including John Heder, Efren Ramirez, Tina Majorino, Aaron Ruell, John Gries and the gang. The 13episode series premieres on Sunday, Jan. 15, at 8:30 ET, right in the middle of Fox's super-successful "animation block." *** Q: I was watching "Robocop" over the weekend and wondered what its star, Peter Weller, can be seen in now? He was so good in that movie! -George T., Omaha, Neb. A: Peter Weller, who very recently was a regular on "Dexter" playing Stan Liddy, is the latest big-name star to be cast in the newest "Star Trek" movie, which is yet untitled. The film's details are being kept under wraps, but I can tell you that Peter is playing a principal character in the May 2013 sequel to the 2009 megablockbuster. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

• On Jan. 1, 1876, the first area-wide New Year's Day Mummers' Parade is held in Philadelphia. Mummers' celebrations in America date back to colonial times. Reciting doggerel and receiving in return cakes and ale, groups of five to 20 people, their faces blackened, would march from home to home, shouting and discharging firearms into the air. • On Dec. 30, 1922, in post-revolutionary Russia, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics is established. In the USSR, all levels of government were controlled by the Communist Party. Soviet industry was owned and managed by the state, and agricultural land was divided into state-run collective farms.

sons simply doesn’t fit the format of a newspaper column. It’s the remaining 10 percent that gives me fits. On the one hand, it’s interesting, timely and well worth writing about. On the other hand, there’s simply too much of it. Up until now, I’ve taken the easy route by devoting very little space to anything other than local news or issues. That may — and I emphasize may — change in 2012, because national and international events and decisions either already have or may soon have more impact on how Missouri’s citizens enjoy the outdoors than do those made in Jefferson City. I rarely use the Internet as a direct source for ideas, but it has become one of my most often used sources of certain types of technical information. For example, there’s no faster or more accurate way to research local, state or federal regulations. I’ve also found that statistics obtained from unbiased sites to be reasonably accurate. That said, sometimes painful experience has taught me that it may have been the Internet President Reagan had in mind when he said, “Trust, but verify.” This is nowhere more true than in the case of how-to information. While I’ve learned some valuable new skills thanks to information I’ve found on the Internet, I’ve read enough utter nonsense about subjects I know something about to be wary of advice on subjects I know little or nothing about unless I can find several sites that provide the same or very similar suggestions. But while I use all of the sources of column material I’ve mentioned, many of my best ideas aren’t my ideas at all. They’re subjects suggested by readers. When somebody tells me, “You should write about ...,” I take notice. I may not cover the subject in the next column I write, but I will do my best to learn enough about the subject to turn into a column when the opportunity presents itself.

Where did I come up with that? In a recent column, I lauded the private land habitat restoration efforts of Quail Unlimited. Very shortly thereafter, I received an email from a concerned reader who believed that QU had disbanded in 2009. Yikes! How could I have missed a bombshell news event like that? Fortunately for both my ego and for the environment, QU is alive and well. But be that as it may, I could have been wrong. That’s why I appreciate every communication I get from a reader, whether it’s in the form of a cheer, a jeer or a question. It’s also why I think you deserve to know some of the most common sources of what you read in this space. Personal experiences, both my own and those of people I interview or otherwise interact with, are the most frequent source of grist for my idea mill. That’s as it should be, because my primary goal is to provide an entertaining and educational window into what really — as opposed to theoretically — can happen in the field and on the water. Passing along firsthand accounts is a good way to do that. Or at least it can be. There is a downside to relying too heavily on the personal experiences of what is, by necessity, a relatively small number of people. The factual truth that a given product or tactic either did or did not work for me and/or for the handful of people I discussed it with around town is not necessarily the end all and be all. I get reminded of that a few times a year, usually — but by no means always — by a product manufacturer. But not to worry. Expanding my informational horizons isn’t merely easy, it’s unavoidable. I get somewhere between 20 and 50 emails a day from trade associations, public relations firms, a plethora of special interest groups and allegedly unbiased outdoor news reporters. Each and every one of them purports to be giving me — and thousands of other outdoor communicators — the inside track. Separating this mountain of electronic chaff from the handful of noteworthy grain it contains is easy at first. At least half of it is of little interest to me, and I feel safe in assuming it’s of even less interest to most of my readers. Another 40 percent is interesting to a trivia sponge like myself but for any of a variety of rea-
