CELEBRITY EXTRA

Q: I really miss seeing Donald Faison on "Scrubs." Can you tell me what I can see him in now? -Jeanette F., via e-mail A: You can see Donald, along with Wayne Knight ("Seinfeld"), Kristen Johnston ("3rd Rock from the Sun") and David Alan Basche ("The Starter Wife") on TV Land's latest original comedy, "The Exes." The show, which airs Wednesday nights, is a comedy about three divorced men (Donald, Wayne and David) sharing an apartment across the hall from their female divorce attorney (Kristen), who also is their landlord. Donald plays charming ladies' man Phil Chase, and the first season of the show is scheduled to air 10 original episodes. The show airs directly after the TV Land hit "Hot in Cleveland." *** Q: It seems like forever since there's been a new "Army Wives." When will the show be returning? -- Justine D. in Wyoming A: While there has not been an exact date announced as of this writing, season six of "Army Wives" will return this spring with a 23-episode season. The show was scheduled for 13 episodes, but then Lifetime Television upped its order for the record-breaking drama. Because of the 10 additional episodes, season six most likely will be broken up into two parts, like many of cable's original dramas have done in the past. Word has it that season six will probably (not definitely) be the show's final season, so it is the general consensus that the higher-ups wanted to get the most out of this season -- and their contractually obligated actors -- that they could. This move is kind of crappy for the actors, however, because instead of the production of the season ending in February -- leaving them open to audition for the fall 2012 pilot season -- it looks like they won't be available for casting calls for new shows.

Donald Faison *** Q: Is my mind playing tricks on me, or did I see an ad that "Fear Factor" is returning to NBC? -- Mike R., West Palm Beach, Fla. A: You are of sound mind, Mike. "Fear Factor" has returned to NBC (shows began airing Dec. 12) on Monday nights. Original host, comedian Joe Rogan, also has returned, as have the strenuous -- and gross -- stunts. Back in July, Joe Rogan told "TV Guide Magazine": "It seems like some sort of bizarro dream world, but I'm looking forward to it. The idea of sitting at home and watching someone else host it would have driven me crazy." *** Q: I really enjoyed the last "Super Bowl Halftime Show" performance by the Black-Eyed Peas. Any word on who is performing this time? -- Denise M. via e-mail A: Pop diva Madonna has been tapped to lend her superstar status to Super Bowl XLVI, which will air on Sunday, Feb. 5, on NBC. No word yet on what surprises she has in store, but I am counting her show to be a doozy! (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Top Five Tips To Keep Your Brain Fit

(NAPS)—Maintaining better brain health may be easier than you think. The good news is that there are practical steps you can take to enhance the way your brain functions. Following a few tips will help you remember more, think faster and perform better at work, school and in everyday life. Five Keys Here are five keys to improving brain health: 1. Eat right. Just as your body needs proper nutrients to function, so too does your brain. Fuel your brain by eating lots of fruits and vegetables, which contain antioxidants such as vitamins C and E that help prevent cell damage. Include some good fats such as omega-3 fatty acids in your diet— found in fish and shellfish, they constitute important building blocks in the brain. And make sure you drink plenty of water to flush out toxins and keep your brain hydrated. 2. Exercise your body. Regular physical exercise can help keep your brain fit by promoting increased levels of brain chemicals and more efficient blood circulation, which is vital to removing cellular waste and delivering Exercising and training your brain can help nutrients needed by the brain. improve your core cognitive abilities and What’s more, studies have found keep your brain functioning at its best. that physical exercise stimulates the production of new brain cells. 3. Be social. Humans are social creatures and our brains have evolved to seek out social contact. Studies have reported that an active social life appears to delay age-related memory loss. Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health found that individuals in their 50s and 60s who engage in a great deal of social activity had the slowest rate of memory decline, and researchers at Kaiser Permanente found that women with active social lives were half as likely to suffer from dementia. 4. Get good sleep. Sleep plays an important role in memory formation. Your brain uses sleep to process and make sense of the day, consolidate memories and even generate creative new ideas. Poor sleep can lead to an imbalance in brain chemicals, resulting in depression or cognitive deficits in processing speed, attention, memory and reasoning. A few simple changes in lifestyle, such as getting proper exercise, cutting out caffeine, relaxing before bedtime and drinking in moderation, can often help improve your quality of sleep. 5. Exercise your brain. The best exercises for your brain are new challenges that use different parts of your brain and increase in difficulty as you improve on tasks. For instance, you can learn a foreign language and then use it among native speakers, or take on a new type of dancing that exercises both the body and the brain. You can also exercise your brain with training programs such as Lumosity.com that are designed specifically to improve brain function. Described as a “gym for the brain,” the site offers personalized training programs and engaging exercises designed to improve core cognitive processes. The site is also available on several mobile application platforms. To learn more, visit www. lumosity.com.

Help awaits landowners who want to boost wildlife Interest in improving animal habit is growing

According to figures supplied by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a little less than 50 percent of the rural land in the United States is privately owned. In slightly more understandable terms, over 900 million acres of the nation’s best cropland, pastureland and rangeland are being managed by approximately 4.7 million individuals or corporations. If habitat types and public/private ownership were spread evenly across the country, excellent conditions for wildlife should be the norm. Such is not the case. An overwhelming majority of the land in the eastern two-thirds of the United States is privately owned. Here in Missouri, for example, only approximately five percent of rural land is publicly owned. There’s no disputing the fact that an overwhelming majority of the mammal, bird, fish, reptile and amphibian species that live in or visit our portion of the North American continent depend either partially or entirely on the habitat conditions to be found on private land. For wildlife lovers, those statistics represent both the best and the worst of all possible worlds. On the plus side of the ledger, individual private citizens make a real difference in the welfare of the wildlife living on or passing through their land. On the negative side, not all of these differences are positive. Happily, landowner interest in improving wildlife habitat is growing at what appears to be an ever-increasing rate. There are a host of organizations and government agencies standing ready to assist any landowner who asks. Landowners who oppose hunting either just on their property or in general will understandably be concerned by the fact that this column will describe only three entities, all of which are staunchly pro-hunting. Let me hasten to assuage those concerns by stating that no private or government agency I know of requires a landowner to allow hunting on his or her property in order to participate in its programs. In fairness, I would have included some antihunting organizations that provide scientific habitat improvement assistance to private landowners, but, to the best of my knowledge, there aren’t any. The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) has a landowner assistance program it calls the “Hunting Heritage Landowner Program.” The NWTF has a penchant for linking programs and memberships. In this case, a nominal annual fee gets the member a window decal, a membership card, a subscription to NWTF’s “Get in the Game” magazine and a 10 percent discount on “select seeds.” Members also receive customized advice on how to develop and execute a detailed management plan for their property. This service will include onsite visits by NWTF experts.

With no disrespect to any other of the many worthy organizations either implied or intended, Missouri’s premier citizen-based habitat restoration organization is Quail Unlimited. QU is organized into “chapters,” each of which does most of its work within its own geographic area. QU is willing to work with any landowner, whether he owns 10 acres or 10,000 acres. QU doesn’t require participants in its conservation activities to be members of any organization. Under a typical scenario, an interested landowner would contact the closest QU chapter, an officer of which would then arrange an onsite meeting between the landowner and a qualified habitat manager. Working together, the two would formulate a habitat improvement plan suited not just to the land, but also to the landowner’s desires. The QU chapter then does what it can to help the landowner achieve his goals. This help might include supplying seed grain for use in establishing winter feeding plots or a wide variety of other seeds for use in creating nesting, brood-raising, feeding and loafing areas. Most QU chapters either have or can gain access to root plows, no-till drills, controlled burn apparatus and other equipment the landowner might need for his project. In some cases, QU enters into agreements with landowner’s to purchase a portion of standing crops to be left unharvested or to lease easements along field borders to create escape and travel cover. The Missouri Department of Conservation is another ready source of both general information and site-specific and one-on-one consultation. The MDC’s contribution to habitat improvement on private land is far greater than the limited amount of space I have to describe it. If you’d like more information, contact the nearest MDC office. Unfortunately, species-specific organizations like the NWTF and QU as well as agencies like the MDC are sometimes accused of wanting to grow more game birds and animals just so they can be shot. Such accusations are as unfair as they are false. But just for the sake of argument, let’s assume they’re true. Even if NWTF, QU and the MDC did want to improve habitat just to fill hunters’ game bags, it’s impossible to improve habitat for the tiny percentage of birds and animals that are hunted without improving habitat for every species of wildlife and, far more often than not, the land itself. To me, that’s a good thing. gjsa@sbcglobal.net

Moments In Time The History Channel

• On Dec. 28, 1895, the world's first commercial movie screening takes place at the Grand Cafe in Paris. The film was a series of short scenes from everyday French life. Admission was charged for the first time.

• On Dec. 27, 1900, prohibitionist Carry Nation smashes up the bar at the Carey Hotel in Wichita, Kansas, causing several thousand dollars in damage and landing in jail. Nation became famous for carrying a hatchet and wrecking saloons as part of her anti-alcohol crusade. • On Dec. 30, 1922, in post-revolutionary Russia, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics is established. In the USSR, all levels of government were controlled by the Communist Party. Soviet industry was owned and managed by the state, and agricultural land was divided into state-run collective farms.

• On Dec. 31, 1937, Anthony Hopkins is born in Port Talbot, Wales. Hopkins is known for playing one of the greatest villains in movie history, the cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs" and its two sequels, "Hannibal" and "Red Dragon."

• On Dec. 29, 1940, London suffers its most devastating air raid when Germans firebomb the city. The next day, a newspaper photo of St. Paul's Cathedral standing undamaged amid the smoke and flames seemed to symbolize the capital's unconquerable spirit during the Battle of Britain. On Dec. 26, 1966, the first day of the first Kwanzaa is celebrated in Los Angeles. The seven-day holiday is a celebration of African-American family, community and cultural values, which include unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, economic cooperation, purpose, creativity and faith.
