shows up well before the home and road matches in time to watch the junior varsity play. When the varsity squad takes the court, she then sets up in the stands on the home side — a new wrinkle after the referees forced her to move from her three-year spot on the court — and starts the camcorder with each toss of the serve and stops it with each point’s end. The on-the-fly editing allows Fall to view a condensed match with no between-point distractions. “It’s pretty important because we don’t watch much film as a team but when we do, it’s good for the kids to see what they did right one game and wrong another for contrast,” said Fall, who primarily watches game film by himself to fine-tune things like defensive positioning. But her duties — following her day gig as a coordinator for Inter State Studio & Publishing Company — are far from done. Werths then goes home, burns the game on discs provided by Fall and, if the viewing can’t wait, she’ll either deliver them to the coach’s house or Fall will swing by to pick them up. “There’s times where that night, and sometimes we play two or three nights in a row, she’ll have them done in 15 minutes and I’ll pick them up,” Fall said. “A lot of mornings they’re sitting on my doorstep already done.” She’s also helpful in other capacities. “She’s definitely one of the team moms, and there are many of them,” Fall said. “In addition to filming, she and (Rebekah) Stone have also helped with snacks and meals for tournaments, making sure the girls get the proper food and snacks and are fed well. She’s one of those parents that will step in about any area we need her.” And while always complimentary, Fall makes sure to single out her contributions at the end-of-the-year athletic banquet. “He’s always been very appreciative,” Werths said. Just don’t expect a varsity letter.

It’s a longstanding joke between the pair. And for Cynthia Werths, it never gets old. Since 2008, the mother of all-state senior Kelli Lamb has been an integral part of the Sacred Heart Gremlins volleyball team, assuming the indispensable role of videographer. But despite her best efforts, Sacred Heart coach David Fall has yet to award her with an honorary varsity letter. “I told him this year, I know I’m going to get a varsity letter,” Werths said. “I just tease him that it’s going to happen after four years.” Fall’s quip back? Without fail or hesitation, a sarcastic “Absolutely.” Teasing aside, despite the long hours and travel time, Werths doesn’t expect anything in return for contributions she considers a labor of love. “I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Werths said with conviction. So how’d she get the job? “Coach just asked for a volunteer,” said Werths, who has never missed a game since her daughter’s freshman year. “I said, ‘OK, I’ll do it.’ ” She didn’t have any prior experience with a camcorder, but after being behind the 2inch screen for three Kaysinger Conference regularseason and tournament crowns, two district titles and a state championship, Werths has carved a niche in the team’s success. “I do know she’s awfully proud of what Kelli’s doing, but in her selflessness, she does it for all the girls,” Fall said. “She wants the team to have every advantage possible.” Werths also prefers to stay busy. Otherwise, the nervous energy of just watching the match would consume her. “It’s more nerve-racking to sit in the stands and watch the game than it is to be focused on recording it,” Werths said. “It’s almost calming, and I love it.” So what does the job entail? More than most would assume. With every reputable high school athletic program in the country relying on the study of game film, Werths — with her own camcorder in tow —

This season has our heroes facing a Tegu lizard outbreak as well as Nile monitors and Burmese pythons -- you know, just the usual deadly invasive creatures. They also battle venomous lionfish, which are proliferating the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, and have no known aquatic enemies. *** Q: I read and enjoy your articles that appear in our newspaper every Sunday.ÊI bet you can answer this: Will "Covert Affairs" on the USA channel be back?Ê-- Virginia G., Webster, N.Y. A: "Covert Affairs" begins airing the second half of its second season on Nov. 1, with six episodes left to round out the season. And I have even more good news for you, Virginia: USA has renewed "Covert Affairs" for a 16-episode third season, to begin airing summer

Tori Spelling 2012. In fact, all of USA's original summer programming has been renewed, including "Royal Pains" and "Necessary Roughness." USA co-presidents Chris McCumber and Jeff Wachtel said in a statement: "USA's original programming blew through all expectations this summer. It's a rare and wonderful thing to announce the pick-up of our entire summer of programming." *** Q: I remember reading in previous columns that you are a big fan of Syfy's "Being Human," so I figure you can tell me if/when it'll be back for a second season? -- Johnny T., via e-mail A: I am, and I can. The werewolf/vampire/ghost paranormal drama will return for its second season on Monday, Jan. 16. As you'll recall, last season saw the demise of Bishop at the hands of Aidan, with Aidan becoming the new leader of Boston's vampires; Nora learned Josh is a werewolf, not revealing to him that he scratched her while he was in werewolf form; and Sally missed her window to the Great Beyond to help save Aidan. Project Gemini Opens New Doors

(NAPS)—It can be easier to cope with a situation if you talk to someone who shares your unique point of view—and that’s especially important for blinded veterans. To reach out to other blinded veterans and their families, six U.S. Armed Forces veterans without sight recently traveled to the United Kingdom. Project Gemini, a joint effort of the Blinded Veterans Association and St Dunstan’s, took the veterans, four of them blinded in recent combat operations, across the Atlantic Ocean for six days of educational exchange and the sharing of friendship, knowledge and insights with their British comrades. The project obtained its name from the transatlantic telecommunications cable that stretches from England to the United States. Project Gemini created an opportunity for blinded veterans to meet in a relaxed environment and, formally and informally, exchange ideas Blinded U.S. veterans shared friendship and views regarding the and insights with British comrades durbest ways to support veter- ing weeklong visit in the U.K. ans who have lost their sight. Subjects of discussion were rehabilitation and readjustment training, vision research and adaptive technology for the blind. “During the week, we shared helpful hints about coping with blindness and the ‘war stories’ that are part of the adjustment process, said Tom Zampieri, director of government relations at BVA. “We compared the British veterans’ health care system with the American system operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs and its dozens of component medical centers, outpatient clinics and veterans homes throughout the country. Project Gemini is an outgrowth of Operation Peer Support, a BVA program begun in 2006 that brings together veterans of recent conflicts with those who have lost their sight in Vietnam, Korea or during World War II. The program’s objective is to provide Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families with examples of and opportunities to interact with men and women who have led happy and prosperous lives despite their blindness. Chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1958, BVA links veterans with the services they’ve earned. Membership is open to all legally blinded veterans who have served in the U.S. military. Membership is not required for veterans to receive assistance, which is free of charge. For more information, call BVA at (800) 669-7079 or visit www.bva.org.

Sighting in rifles begins at home

################################################

Only a perfectly mounted scope makes it possible to adjust the rifle’s actual point of aim

In theory, every shooter’s objective is for every bullet fired to hit its intended target whether that target is the 10 ring of a bulls eye at 1,000 yards or the chest of a bull moose at 100 feet. In reality, the first isn’t going to happen. On the other hand, if your goal is to be a successful and ethical deer hunter, you’re going to have to hit a target significantly smaller than a moose at distances that often are well beyond 100 feet. Anyone who’s willing to make a reasonably modest investment in equipment and a whatever-it-takes investment in practice can reach that goal. But don’t rush off to the range just yet, because accuracy begins at home. A good rifle is one that puts its rounds where its shooter is looking. This sometimes easy, sometimes exasperating feat of firearm domestication is accomplished by one of a number of devices commonly lumped together under the term sights. In this column, I’ll deal with telescopic scopes, because I began using them decades before failing eyesight made them mandatory. My observations about mounting sights apply equally to all types of sights. All sights are meant to give the shooter a means to duplicate lining up the shot by looking through the barrel. Although it’s not something the shooter will notice, a scope’s reticule is actually aimed slightly downward, so the falling bullet will pass through the perceived line of sight twice, once at approximately 25 yards for most center-fire cartridges and again farther downrange at a point dictated by the type of bullet and the weight of the powder charge. The first step in mounting a scope to a rifle is to eliminate as many variables between what the bore sees and the scope sees as possible. Doing so requires taking whatever steps are necessary to insure that the scope is mounted absolutely parallel to the rifle’s bore and that a vertical line that exactly bisects the scope’s eyepiece also exactly bisects the rifle’s bore. Note that I chose my words carefully in that last sentence. While high quality components (rifle, scope and mounts) usually produce perfect alignment out of the box, don’t count on it. If necessary consult a gunsmith. If he can’t make it right, start over.

GERALD SCOTT ... is an outdoors writer and columnist for The Plainsman

Only a perfectly mounted scope makes it possible to adjust the rifle’s actual point of aim as observed through the perceived point of aim provided by the reticule up and down or left and right. On top-of-the-product-line scopes, each click of the adjustment should move the point of aim the same distance as every other click, usually a quarter-inch at 100 yards. The adjustments on most medium-priced scopes are less precise, but, with a little extra effort, they can produce accuracy that’s more than sufficient for deer hunting. Only firing live ammunition at a range can fine-tune sighting in, but sights should be mounted, and, if possible, bore-sighted before live fire begins. Laser bore sighters are inexpensive, but most gun shops will bore sight rifles for a nominal fee. I’m sure I’m not exaggerating when I say that most rifle shooters spend little time pondering which bullet would serve them best. Many hunters never give any thought to what’s at the front end of the ammunition they stuff into their rifles in the predawn darkness of opening day. I don’t have that option, because evaluating both truly new and merely reinvented wheels under real world conditions is part of what an outdoor writer does. After shooting dozens of different bullet designs at both targets and live game, I’ve concluded that all of today’s name-brand rifle ammunition is more than capable of doing its part to allow an average shooter who’s familiar with his or her rifle to shoot 2-inch groups at 100 yards from a bench rest and 6-inch groups under hunting conditions using shooting sticks from a kneeling position. The catch is that many rifles like some bullets better than others, and a few rifles can be as fussy as a 2-year-old at a high class restaurant. Next week, we’ll go to the range, and look at some ways to solve that and other sighting in problems. gjsa@sbcglobal.net
