Former teacher gets to keep tabs on former students in job

Monday- Saturday 8am - 5pm

By Dennis Rich

Ruth Dale may get paid for her part-time work as executive assistant for the Sedalia 200 School District Foundation, but her peers say her dedication to her job, and the district, go well beyond a 20hour work week. “Almost all foundation members work with Ruth on one thing or another, She is a paid administrative assistant, but she does so much more,” said Foundation Presidentelect Deidre Esquivel. The all volunteer 35-member foundation, which provides scholarships, mini-grants and other resources to district students, staff, teachers, and members of the community, are a nonprofit entity, separate from the district, and supported through private contributions. From helping with fund raising to keeping track of district alumni to editing and producing the foundation’s newsletter “Connections,” Esquivel said Dale is “the driving force between alumni and our foundation.” “She is a wonderful lady and a retired teacher. Ruth is a pillar of the educational community because she cares so much about education and about that alumni connection,” Esquivel said. Dale, who spent nearly 30 years as a teacher in Sedalia schools — she also taught for two-and-a-half years in Smithton — said her position with the foundation allows her to keep a strong connection to students, the district and education. Now in her seventh year as executive assistant, Dale said she jumped at a chance to work with the foundation after being approached by board members. “I had just been retired a small amount of time from teaching school, so it was just a perfect fit and a way to stay involved,” Dale said. With new graduates passing out of the district each year, Dale now has a list of some 22,000 names to keep track of, and she uses every tool at her disposal, from the U.S. Postal Service to new social media, such as Facebook, to maintain close ties with former Sedalia 200 students — a resource that board members consider essential to supporting and promoting educational opportunities in the district. “We really believe that those who have invested so much time in the district might also be the best people to support the district. That is why we work so hard to stay in contact with alums. A lot of them have a real strong feeling for their home school,” Dale said. She said her job also allows her the opportunity to keep in touch with her own former students from her years as a firstand second-grade teacher at Skyline, Horace Mann and

Heber Hunt elementary schools. “One of my special interests since I was a teacher is keeping up with students as they grow up. I was still in touch as my kids became seniors and eventually graduated; I was still involved with them. Now I get to stay in touch and send them newsletters to keep them up-to-date with what is going on back home,” Dale said. Alumni contributions are used to “fill in the gaps” for students, teacher s and staff where official district dollars are not available. “Basically we are there to support students and staff of Sedalia public schools with things the budget does not cover,” Dale said. The support ranges from mini-grants to help teachers buy needed resources to support instruction, as well as some scholarships for district students. Among her favorite duties is the editing and publication of “Connections.” Dale said each edition has a theme and she spends countless hours combing through yearbooks looking for images to fit each theme. “I love going through the yearbooks and seeing how the face have changed over time. Seeing those pictures are something our alums really look forward to,” Dale said. She is also charged with helping plan and organize homecoming activities, including a tailgate party and posthomecoming breakfast for returning graduates. Dale and other board volunteers are busily preparing for this year’s homecoming, scheduled for Sept. 23. “That takes a lot of planning, but it is so worth it,” Dale said. Although herself not a Smith-Cotton High School graduate, Dale said her mother, brother and son all attended school in the district and those ties help keep her dedicated to supporting the school system. “Smith-Cotton is such an important part of the community. I taught here, and I want to retire here, and I think it just makes it a better place if everyone takes an interest in the school system, Dale said. “I am very lucky to have such a wonderful board and get to work with some many wonderful people that really care.”

CELEBRITY EXTRA

Q: I am loving the second season of my favorite show, "The Walking Dead," on AMC. I know this might be a little early, but will it return for another season? -- Chad G., via e-mail A: Normally, this would be a bit early for renewal news, but since the show's return at the end of October, its ratings have been through the roof. Season two ratings have eclipsed the stellar ratings (especially by cable standards) of the first season, so AMC has already renewed it for a third season. "The Walking Dead" depicts the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse following a group of survivors outside Atlanta, starring Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal and Sarah Wayne Callies. *** Q: I was sad to read in your column that "Spartacus" star Andy Whitfield had passed away. Will the production of the show continue after his death? -Hallie E., Akron, Ohio A: In March 2010, Andy was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Production on season two was delayed so he could be treated. Unfortunately, his cancer returned, and he dropped out of the series and was replaced by Liam McIntyre. Andy passed away at age 39 this past September. Season two, with Liam as Spartacus, will return to Starz on Jan. 27, with the network already giving the green light for a third season to begin production in early 2012. *** Q: I have noticed the actress who plays Kensi on "NCIS: Los Angeles" appears to have two different colored eyes. Does she, or am I just seeing things? I think she plays a good strong female part and would like to see her in more shows or movies. -- Mary B., Virginia Beach, Va. A: Daniela Ruah, who has played Kensi Blye since the show's premiere in 2009, has a birthmark in her right eye, making it appear almost completely black, with her left eye being hazel. You'll get to see more of Daniela soon, as she co-stars

Daniela Rush in the feature film "Red Tails" with Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Bryan Cranston. She also is rumored to be starring in the upcoming "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" with Bruce Campbell. *** UPDATE: Hot on the heels of the news that Lifetime picked up "America's Most Wanted" after it was canceled by Fox comes the news of its premiere date. The 20-episode 25th season of the crimefighting reality show will premiere on Dec. 2 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The show's passionate host, John Walsh, said of the return: "I am excited to be back in the saddle and working with Lifetime. We are the court of last resort, and with the show getting back to our weekly airing, we'll have the capability of getting more fugitives off the streets and behind bars where they belong. We hope our observant fans continue the mission with us, on our new night -Friday -- and keep our capture number climbing while helping those crime victims who need us." Tips To Prevent Hearing Loss

(NAPS)—The level of noise in some environments may surprise you. For example, some people may think that farms are quiet places, but plows, combines, tractors and even farm animals can create a noisy, high-decibel environment that puts hearing at risk. Prolonged exposure to any noise at or above 85 decibels can cause gradual hearing loss and many types of farm equipment run at 100 decibels or higher. Families that live and work around a farm now have a new way to learn healthy hearing habits to help protect their hearing. To increase awareness about the causes and prevention of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), part of the National Institutes of Health, has launched a new campaign called “It’s a Noisy Planet. Protect Their Hearing.” The campaign focuses its prevention message on tweens (children ages 8–12) and their parents. In addition, the Noisy Planet campaign is partnering with 4-H to help spread the message through extension agents and volunteers. “The good news is that there are simple steps that everyone can take to protect their hearing from potentially damaging sounds,” says James F. Battey, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., director of the The best advice for avoiding hearing loss NIDCD. in rural areas is to “keep it down on the Here are a few steps: • Get comfortable hearing farm” by quieting noisy machinery, movprotectors and get comfortable ing away from it or wearing earplugs. using them. Remind your child to do chores or other activities away from noisy equipment. • Move away from the noise. If possible, lower the volume. • Be aware of noise levels that put hearing at risk. If you run a piece of farm equipment and have to shout to be heard over the noise, then you should be wearing hearing protection. • Take steps to reduce noise from machinery. Keep machinery running smoothly by replacing worn parts. Be sure engines are well lubricated and properly tuned to reduce noise from friction or vibrations. The Noisy Planet website provides parents with information and tips on how to teach children about hearing protection. The site also features articles, games, posters and other materials developed just for kids to make learning about hearing protection fun. Columnist rediscovers waterfowl hunting near ponds

The trivia buffs among you are no doubt dying to know that the full moon you walked to your deer stand under this morning is known as the “Beaver Moon” to northeastern American Indian tribes, because beavers kick off their preparations for winter into high gear around this time of the year. This fact is semi-pertinent to my subject, because one of the things beavers do is make ponds. Several dozen Beaver Moons ago, ponds were the focal point of a lot of my duck hunting and a fair amount of my goose hunting. Almost none of these ponds were built by flat-tailed, buck-toothed rodents, but the bulldozer operators who did build them after the drought years of the 1930s and 1950s were every bit as single-mindedly zealous in their pursuit of impounded water. I continued to hunt around ponds for a few years after I moved to rural Missouri in 1978. Then I fell prey to the siren song of the big reservoirs. This phase of my waterfowl hunting odyssey lasted until those same reservoirs convinced me that duck hunting was more trouble than it was worth, and I quit waterfowl hunting altogether, except for the early Canada goose season. A friend who hunts ducks with the same passion I devote to deer made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. “Come duck hunting with me Thursday morning,” he said. Then before I could protest, he added, “I’ve already got decoys set out on a pond only a few miles from (name of town deleted.) We can be there and hidden inside a couple of portable layout blinds in 45 minutes. Later, we can jump a pond or two if you’d like.” Now let me see. On the one hand, I’d have to give the feds $15 for a waterfowl stamp, and because of other commitments, I’d only get about four hours sleep. On the other hand, this would be a pond duck hunt, and I’d been wanting to see what hunting from a layout blind was like for years. Count me in. Only the light reflected from the Beaver Moon revealed the location of the pond we tramped across a soybean stubble field toward dark and early Thursday morning. Going in, I was pleasantly surprised by how firm the ground was, despite the rain earlier in the week. Coming out, I was less pleasantly surprised to note that the ground was firm, because it was frozen. I already knew layout blinds got their name from the fact that their extremely low profile required hunters using them to lie down. Beyond that, I didn’t have a clue. The first thing I learned was that, even in the dark, a layout blind — or at least the model my

friend has — can be set up quickly and without any tools other than a headlamp or small flashlight. Setup met ready to use. There was no need to scramble around cutting and gathering local vegetation to augment the blind’s inherent camouflage. My next happy discovery was that I wouldn’t be prone inside the blind. Instead, although my legs were fully extended, a built-in back support elevated my upper body just enough to make seeing approaching ducks semi-possible and sitting up to shoot easy. On a potentially negative side, a layout blind forces its occupant to make a tough choice. On the one hand, the farther inside the blind the hunter snuggles, the warmer he stays — a tempting factor on a cold breezy morning. On the other hand, a hunter who exposes the top half of his head has at least some chance of seeing ducks streaking past only a few feet above the water. I opted for the former approach, and my friend took the latter. As a result, he froze out first, but he also shot the morning’s only duck, a greenwing teal. Later that morning we visited another pond that had a tailor-made approach to the back side of its dam a quarter-mile up a grassy waterway. My friend and his Labrador retriever stayed at the truck while I made the stalk. There was a small flock of mergansers on the pond. I got one when they flushed and a second when the flock circled back overhead. The Lab retrieved both birds flawlessly. Prior to that morning, I would have laughed at anyone who told me how thoroughly I would enjoy a waterfowl hunt that produced only one tiny but tasty teal and two virtually inedible mergansers. But I would have been wrong. The hunt itself was great. It awakened some long dormant memories of just how special it is to see the sun rise over a small body of water. The roar of wings and the loud, obviously irritated honking coming from the flock of geese we flushed off the pond when we arrived was pretty neat, too. As for the mergansers, they were the first of their kind I’ve ever held in my hand. I’ll probably never shoot another one, but those two were the icing on a good piece of cake. gjsa@sbcglobal.net

Farm: This 120 acre farm features approximately 85 open acres with 52 acres of crop ground. The farm features a two-story 3 bedroom home with one bath, a living room, kitchen, large formal dining area and a small mud room/porch off the back. The heat for the home is provided by 2 Warm Morning LP stoves, and there is a window air conditioning unit. The home gets its water from a deep well, has a septic system, and is in the Tipton school district. The ground is gently rolling (presently in improved pasture) and has been cropped in years past. The fences are cattle tight, and there are two ponds for watering livestock. Outbuildings on the farm include a 56’x15’ shed (open on one side), a 30’x24’ barn with newer metal siding, a 36’x24’ work shed, a 15’x20’ picnic pavilion, and parking shed for two cars by the house. Terms: The opening bid on the farm will be $1,900 per acre. Any bid over that and the farm sells to the high bidder. A down payment of $15,000 will be required sale day, with the balance due at closing to be held on or before Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012. Sellers will provide Owner’s policy; buyer is responsible for any lender’s policy. Taxes prorated, closing fee split 50/50. AUCTIONEER’S NOTE: Here is a farm with versatility…. with opportunities for running cattle, growing crops, or other livestock ventures. The hunting is good and the house is very livable, in addition to several outbuildings that you could use in a number of ways. Give this farm a look, as they are getting harder to find all of the time! Remember, any bid over $1,900.00 per acre and the farms sells to the high bidder, so have your finances in order.
