ter than a cupcake.” Westerhold talked about his time in the service. He is an Army veteran of World War II. He was in the infantry and served in Germany. “We were going to take Berlin, but they stopped us,” he said. Westerhold’s wife of almost 62 years spotted him in the barbershop, after searching for him for 20 minutes. When she noticed he was swapping stories with Roberts, she laughed. He left the shop in good spirits and with a smile on his face. Miller started volunteering at the vet home a few months ago. She moved to Warrensburg in December because her husband was transferred to Whiteman Air Force Base. “It’s been fun. I used to do hair at a retirement facility in Jefferson City and I kind of like nursing homes. I found out there was a veterans home here. They said they had a volunteer opening, so I kind of fell into it,” she said. “It keeps me up on my hair and it helps them too.” George Goldsmith was happy to see Miller arrive. “She is very special,” he said. While she was cutting his hair, he quoted his favorite scripture readings to her. He also couldn’t help but talk about politics. “They come here to talk mostly. They like to tell their stories, laugh and have a good time,” she said. “It’s fun, I enjoy it. I would rather work in a nursing facility than a salon. They appreciate it so much more.” Lantz keeps track of the 200 residents the old-fashioned way. She has a box of index cards with each veteran’s name and picture on it, along with dates of when they got their hair cut. All veterans must be seen within five weeks. Though Roberts and Miller only volunteer a few days a month, their work does make a difference. When Lantz is on vacation or sick, the volunteers step up, fill in and keep everything on track.

Alicia Lantz couldn’t get 200 haircuts done in every five weeks without the help of her volunteers. Lantz is a cosmetologist and certified nurse’s assistant at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg. She has been in charge of the barbershop at the home for the past five years. Geraldine Roberts, of Odessa, and Debra Miller, 28, of Warrensburg, volunteer their time and services to make sure veterans at the home not only get their hair cut, but their nails done, faces shaved, glasses cleaned and eyebrows trimmed. Roberts has been volunteering at the home since it opened in 2000. She started cutting hair when she was 17. She worked in a beauty shop for 15 years, but quit after she was married. While she works in the barbershop, her husband John works in the canteen. “We enjoy it — my husband and I do,” she said. Her first client of the day was Russell Westerhold, 86, of Odessa. “We’ve known each other since the ’70s,” Roberts said. Westerhold was a reserve police officer in Odessa and worked with Roberts’ husband. “I won’t let no one else cut it,” said Westerhold. “If she hadn’t shown up, I would have just waited.” Westerhold became a resident of the home on Dec. 31, 2009. He was transferred from a nursing home in Independence. Roberts said: “I had to laugh, I think, the first or second time I trimmed his hair. I said, ‘Did you ever think after all of the years of knowing each other that I was going to cut your hair?’ ” He said, ‘I didn’t think I’d ever be in here to let you cut my hair.’ ” The pair caught up during the haircut and said they share the same birthday, June 15. Roberts said, “He came in here and he said ‘Hi. How are you? Happy birthday. Let me give you a hug.’ That was bet-

CELEBRITY EXTRA

Q: I am heartbroken that Fox has canceled “America’s Most Wanted. I’ve watched the show since the beginning, and I am so proud of all the good John Walsh and his crew have done to “get those dirtbags off the streets! Is there an address for Fox that we can write to, hopefully to change their minds? -- Gertrude T., via email A: I have good news for you, Gertrude. Lifetime Television recently announced that it has picked up John Walsh’s top crime-fighting show, which will return for its 25th season later this year. While there is not an exact airdate scheduled as of this writing, keep an eye on this column for updates as I get them. Also, check online at www.celebrityextraonline.com as December gets closer for my exclusive interview with John Walsh about the resurrection of “AMW on Lifetime. I’m sure we’ll also talk about all those “creeps and “slimeballs that John will be trying to capture this upcoming season. *** Q: I loved the TV show “Lost and have been wondering about the man who played Sawyer. He is such a good actor. Do you have any info on what he’s doing now? -- Janet R., Newark, Ohio A: The handsome Josh Holloway, 42, has been keeping pretty busy since “Lost ended last year. You can see him again soon on the big screen in “Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol. In the movie, which hits theaters on Dec. 21, Josh plays Trevor Hanaway, a member of Ethan Hunt’s (played by Tom Cruise) Mission Impossible force, along with Ving Rhames and Academy Award-nominee Jeremy Renner. *** Q: I really liked your idea a few months back of having Beth Littleford (of “Crazy Stupid Love) playing James Spader’s wife in “The Office this season, but now I hear Maura Tierney has been tapped for the part. Is that true? If so, what do

Josh Holloway you think about that? Ă‘ Holly T., via e-mail A: While Maura is no stranger to comedy -- she co-starred on “News Radioâ€? from 1995-99 -- she usually plays the straight (wo)man, which is exactly what James Spader needs, now that we are getting a better idea of what his character, Robert California, is like. So now I make this modest proposal: How about we cast Beth as Robert’s Scranton mistress? Her offbeat and hilarious sense of humor, along with her improv skills and deadpan humor, would make her the perfect “secret loverâ€? for the new boss, as well as an excellent foil for the rest of the cast. Are you listening, Paul Lieberstein and crew? *** Q: I really like the reality/survival series, “The Colony,â€? on the Discovery Channel. When will the third season start? -- Jane R., Philadelphia A: According to a Discovery Channel representative, currently there are no plans to bring “The Colonyâ€? back in 2011. I’ll keep checking and keep you posted as I learn any more details for 2012. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid

(NAPS)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo. Shortcut: “I’m only driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.” Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip— no matter the distance—espe- With three out of four child safety seats cially since most crashes occur not properly installed, consulting an expert can be critical to ensure that chilclose to home. Shortcut: “I’m picking up dren are secured in the safest manner several kids after soccer prac- possible. tice and I’m going to put my 8year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt. Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts. Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.” Reminder: It’s never safe to ride on another person’s lap. Each passenger should be properly restrained on every trip. Shortcut: “My son is 10 years old and 4’6” tall. He’s big enough to use a seat belt now.” Reminder: The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends children continue to use belt-positioning booster seats until they are 4’9” and the seat belt fits properly. Help For Parents Fortunately, AAA experts are available to help parents with car seat installation. Visit an AAA club, go to www.seatcheck.org or call (866) SEATCHECK [(866) 732-8243]. Saying goodbye to good partner, better friend Oct. 19-20. 2011

SouthPlainsman.com

Columnist loses hunting dog in car accident

As seems to be so often the case around the Scott house, Amber got the toughest job. It started when she answered the front doorbell early Wednesday morning to find a Sedalia police officer standing there. It got rapidly worse when she came into our bathroom, where I was getting ready to shave. I could tell by the look in her eyes that something truly awful had happened. Just as she opened her mouth to speak, I saw she was holding a well worn brown leather collar. “Grace got out of the yard somehow, and she’s been hit by a car and killed over on Broadway.” I think she said something else, but I didn’t really hear it. I’m not the least bit ashamed to admit that I laid across the bed and cried for several minutes. How do you say goodbye to a good partner and a better friend after 10 years? I’ve barely begun to process that, but there’s one good-bye Amber and I couldn’t have had except for that police officer. He went way beyond the call of duty not only to bring Grace’s body home, but also to do it with dignity and sensitivity. Amber didn’t get his name, but if I were still in law enforcement, he’s the kind of man I’d want at my side. We buried Grace at one of her favorite places — a friend’s farm not far from town. Amy, the beagle pup I’d intended to be Grace’s protégé went along. The last time the two dogs had been there, Amy went wherever Grace went and tried her best to do whatever Grace did. After Grace was laid away, Amy and I went for a walk. She acted like the fourmonth-old pup she is and had no desire to do anything but stay close by my side. While Amber and I were eating lunch, I commented that a lot of hopes and dreams had been shattered that morning. Amber agreed but pointed out that I’ve trained a lot of pups that turned out well without the help of an older dog. That’s true, and I know I’ll get there eventually, but I’m not ready to think that far ahead right now. Then she asked me which of my hunts with Grace had been the best. What a question! Grace helped put 206 rabbits in my game bag and somewhere around 40 in bags of various friends. And that doesn’t count the 100 or so bunnies she ran that lived to tell the tale. Sitting there at the dining room table, the

first hunt that came to mind was the time I took my stepfather along as a nonhunting observer. Grace jumped a rabbit out of some short grass on top of a dike, and the ensuing chase went 400 yards east before looping north. We could see as well as hear most of the action. Grace had just turned back west, when Pat whispered in amazement, “The rabbit’s sitting right beside me.” He leaned back, I leaned forward, and the rabbit was duly dispatched. Grace stayed with the track until she arrived where her prize was waiting. Pat was duly impressed, and I just about busted my buttons. But if I had to pick one hunt, it would be a cold afternoon late in the season at Marshall Junction Conservation Area. Grace had a rabbit running along a field edge that had been feathered several years previously by the Missouri Department of Conservation’s area manager, and even with the help of 3 inches of fresh snow, the only place along the chase’s route I could find where I had any chance at all of intercepting the bunny was overgrown with saplings. The first time she brought the rabbit past me, I didn’t see it at all. Not to worry, because when Grace was on a track, the chase ended either with the rabbit in hand or down a hole she couldn’t dig it out of. The second time, I got a shot but missed. Hey! It was a tough shot. The third pass, I missed again. When Grace came by, she stopped for a full minute and just stared at me. Some people claim that dogs can’t talk, but I distinctly heard her say, “Just what part of shoot the #%$&# rabbit don’t you understand?” Thoroughly chastised, when she gave me a fourth chance, I did my duty. Grace brought me the rabbit. It was one of two times in her life that she retrieved game. At this writing, neither Amy nor I have fully comprehended, let alone accepted, our new reality. But we will. We owe Grace’s memory no less. gjsa@sbcglobal.net
