Jim and Wanda Meyer contribute countless hours volunteering with Christ & Trinity Lutheran Church and other organizations across the community.

Volunteerism has long been a passion for Jim and Wanda Meyer, but they said retirement has afforded them more time to spend together helping others. Originally from Cole Camp, the Meyers, who became best friends before they reached their teens and have been married for 46 years, moved to Sedalia more than four decades ago, when Wanda began her 30-year career as a teacher in the Sedalia school district. After Jim returned from serving in Vietnam, he operated a service station in east Sedalia for 33 years. The couple have two daughters and two grandchildren, and as part of the congregation at Christ & Trinity Lutheran Church, Jim and Wanda Meyer have also devoted countless hours to their church family over the years. Whether singing with the choir or helping prepare for a rummage sale, the couple is always ready and willing to put the needs of others first. Wanda is in her 45th year of teaching Sunday school and Bible school classes and is one of the coordinators of the church’s Women of the ELCA group, while Jim serves on the church council, property and memorial committees and previously was on the finance committee. Although they have been active volunteers for Christ & Trinity for many years, retirement has allowed the Meyers more opportunities to contribute to other charitable endeavors throughout the community. “Of course everybody said in our retirement years we wouldn’t know what to do, we’d have too much time on our hands and we’d get on each other’s nerves,” Wanda said. “But we’ve been married 46 years and the best years are our retirement years. We’ve had more fun together.” In addition to his work for the church, Jim serves on the board for Meals on Wheels and volunteers once a month at Open Door. When Wanda is not substitute teaching, her time is split among serving on the board for the Liberty and Tambo Apart-

ments, working in support of various community causes through the Alpha Delta Kappa honorary teachers’ sorority and serving as fellowship chairman of the Community Retired Teachers Association. She also participates each year in the Relay for Life, and has previously served nine years on the Sedalia Public Library Board. “It’s been a busy time. We’ve got to learn to say no, but that’s hard to do, because there’s just so many things you want to do,” she said. Wanda said the couple’s faith plays a major role in motivating them to give their time to help others, but volunteering is also a rewarding experience in itself. “You do it because you want to help someone, but when you help, it seems like the blessings come back to you,” Wanda said. “It’s such a joy to reach out and help someone, and the people of Sedalia are very appreciative.” “It’s a lot of fun, too,” Jim added. Along with the chance to give back to the community, the couple views their volunteer service as a fulfilling way to live as an example of their beliefs. “We’re not preachers. We try to be examples,” Wanda said. “The best thing to do is live by example. It’s very fulfilling.” Another motivation for their volunteer service was the opportunity to spend more time together and with others, both those who benefit from their work and other volunteers. Wanda said volunteering provides a chance to really get to know people and build relationships that make life richer. While the Meyers are able to find some time to relax, enjoy retirement and visit their family, it’s never long before they return to serving their church and community, and they have no intention of cutting back on their volunteering any time soon. “The community gave to us, so we love to give back to them,” Wanda said. “I don’t think our lives would be fulfilled just sitting at home,” said Jim.

Preventing Prescription Medicine Abuse

Page 4

CELEBRITY EXTRA

NAPS)—According to the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, one in five teens has abused prescription drugs. The Partnership for a DrugFree America says 70 percent of people who abuse prescription drugs get them from their home, their friends or their family. Here are some ways to protect your family. What You Can Do The Partnership points out that parents have more influence over their child than friends, music, TV, the Internet and celebrities. Kids who learn about the risks of drugs and alcohol from their parents, the organization adds, are up to 50 percent less likely to use than those who do not. You can help your teen stay safe and make healthy choices, it says, by: • Talking and listening regularly. • Being directly involved in your child’s everyday world. • Making it clear that you do not want him or her drinking or using drugs. • Setting limits. In addition, according to the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, one of the most effective ways to curb prescription drug abuse is to safeguard medications. For many families, a great way to safeguard high-risk prescription and over-the-counter medications may be with a new and improved line of locking medicine cabinets, recessed security cabinets and lockboxes that blend in with most home environments. The cabinets offer an inconspicuous and durable keyed mechanism that limits access to the contents inside. They feature Locking up prescription drugs can lock in a contemporary frame in oil- some peace of mind. rubbed bronze or satin nickel finishes that can coordinate décor with popular bath and hardware fixtures. To secure medications in other parts of the home, manufacturers offer recessed security cabinets that can help maximize storage space. These cabinets fit easily between standard stud distances and can be installed in a closet or behind a door or anywhere in the home where one may want to store valuables. In addition, the cabinet door can be camouflaged with paint or wallpaper for enhanced concealment. For those in need of a smaller option for secure storage, manufacturers have a compact and discreet lockbox, which can be installed within an existing medicine cabinet, kitchen cabinet or storage unit with at least 14 inches of width. It lets you secure your medications, but still have easy access to other items for everyday use.

Q: I really loved Ann-Marie Johnson on "In the Heat of the Night." What can I see her in now, and is she married with children? -Virginia, C. A: I can't even begin to list AnnMarie's film and TV credits, as there are way too many of them, but I can tell you the first series I remember seeing her in was "Double Trouble" back in 1984. Since then, she has been featured in "Hill Street Blues," "I'm Gonne Get You Sucka," "In Living Color," "Melrose Place," "Ally McBeal," "The X-Files," "JAG," "Pursuit of Happyness" and "NCIS." Her most recent projects have been "Leverage" and "Fairly Legal." AnnMarie, 51, has been married to actor Martin Grey since 1996, and they have no children. *** Q: I was watching an older movie called "Dracula III" with Rutger Hauer as Dracula, and I could have sworn the red-haired vampire also plays the assistant D.A. on "Law & Order: SVU." Are they the same person? Also, was Mariska Hargitay, also of "SVU," ever on the TV show "Freddy's Nightmares"? -Kevin B., Edmore, Mich. A: You are correct on both counts. Diane Neal did indeed play Elizabeth Blaine in the straight-to-video vampire movie "Dracula III," starring alongside Rutger, Roy Schieder and Jason London. And back before Mariska was detective-extraordinaire Olivia Benson on "SVU," she did indeed have a role in one of the "Freddy's Nightmares" episodes, playing medical student Marsha, whom Freddy -- played by the always-scary Robert Englund -harasses on Halloween, driving her to the brink of madness. *** Q: The TV show "The Mentalist" shows Ashley Gable as producer. Is she a daughter or granddaughter of Clark Gable? -- Juanita S., St. Clair Shores, Mich. A: Ashley Gable, who recently took over as executive producer of the CBS crime drama, is not related to the iconic actor, known best for his role of Rhett Butler in "Gone With the Wind."

Ann-Marie Johnson Clark had two children: a daughter with actress Loretta Young named Judy Lewis, who has a daughter named Maria, and a son with actress Kay Williams named John Clark Gable, who has a son named Clark James and daughter named Hayley. Ashley Gable -- who, again, is no relation to Clark Gable -- is a prolific writer and producer, working on such shows as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Xena: Warrior Princess," "Crossing Jordan" and "The Mentalist," to name just a few. *** Q: Will the horror series "The Walking Dead" be back for another season? -- Donna C., Warner, Okla. A: AMC has rewarded "The Walking Dead" with a 13-episode second season (up from a six-episode first season), which is scheduled to begin Sunday, Oct. 16, at 9 p.m. ET. For those unfamiliar with the critically acclaimed series, it is based on the comic-book series of the same name and centers on a group of people who've survived a zombie apocalypse and are searching across America for a new, safe home away from all the killer zombies. Moments In Time The History Channel

• On Oct. 6, 1866, in Indiana, the Reno Gang carries out the first robbery of a moving train, making off with $10,000. This new method of sticking up moving trains in remote locations low on law enforcement soon became popular in the American West.

• On Oct. 3, 1917, the U.S. Congress passes the War Revenue Act, increasing income taxes to raise money for the war effort. A graduated tax system was introduced, with rates starting at 1 percent and rising to 7 percent for taxpayers with income above $500,000.

• On Oct. 4, 1927, sculpting begins on the granite images of presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. Jefferson's image was originally fashioned to the right of Washington. Within two years, the face was badly cracked and workers blasted the sculpture off the mountain. Sculpting began again with Jefferson on the left side of Washington. • On Oct. 5, 1947, President Harry Truman makes the first televised presidential address, asking Americans to cut back on food to help starving Europeans. He requested that the public voluntarily forgo meat on Tuesdays, eggs and poultry on Thursdays and to save a slice of bread each day. • On Oct. 7, 1960, the first episode of the one-hour television drama "Route 66" airs. The show followed two young men, Buz Murdock and Tod Stiles, as they drove across the country in a Corvette convertible, doing odd jobs and looking for adventure.

• On Oct. 8, 1970, the best-known living Russian writer, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, wins the Nobel Prize for literature. The Soviet government demonstrated its displeasure by preventing him from personally accepting the award. Solzhenitsyn's works had to be secreted out of Russia in order to be published. Pro gives advice to videographers Shooting videos on hunting trip keeps memories alive

I was going through some old notes recently, and I came across a 2007 interview with Phillip Vanderpool, who at the time was a professional videographer for Hunter’s Specialties, Inc. Vanderpool’s primary goal was to help amateur videographers produce turkey hunting videos they wouldn’t be embarrassed to show their friends, but his advice is equally apropos to shooting hunting videos targeting other species. Vanderpool’s advice assumes that the cameraman and the hunter are not the same person. It’s possible to produce a good-enough-forwho-it’s-for video with a palm-sized camcorder. Anyone who would like to get even semi-serious about videography should invest in the best shoulder-mounted camcorder he or she can afford. Vanderpool warned that the biggest mistake amateur videographers make is thinking that a camcorder is the only piece of equipment they’ll need. He said that making use of a tripod whenever possible will ensure more stable shots and smoother zooms, and I couldn’t agree more. Vanderpool recommended practicing with and then using the manual focus feature on the camcorder. Auto-focus is great for shooting around-the-tree family Christmas footage and for capturing distant scenery while on vacation. Auto focus is unsuitable for shooting hunting videos, because it will try to focus on the nearest object in the view finder, which will seldom be what the cameraman wants the audience to focus on. Vanderpool stressed the need to “be sure and carry extra tapes and batteries.” It’s a rare turkey hunter who only carries one shotgun shell, and, for many of the same reasons, it should be equally rare for a cameraman to have only one tape in his field pack. It’s a proven fact that gremlins live in batteries. Never fall into the trap of thinking that one battery, no matter how new or fully charged, will last through a morning of filming. Other items Vanderpool recommends include lens cleaning cloth and a plastic trash bag or some other means to protect the camera should it begin to rain. Have some wet wipes on hand to clean up the bird before shooting still or video “hero shots.” And speaking of hero shots, still photo-

GERALD SCOTT ... is an outdoors writer and columnist for The Plainsman

graphs are an important part of recording a hunt no matter how well the video turns out. Finally, Vanderpool reminded his listeners to shoot more than a kill scene. Shoot plenty of scenery and set up shots of the hunt. Set-up shots can be recorded either before or after the climax of the hunt and then edited into the right sequence. That’s how the professionals do it. To obtain more realistic footage, Vanderpool recommended, “If you are taping for another hunter, set up close enough that you can communicate with each other. The cameraman should be able to see the same thing as the hunter even though his angle of that view will be slightly different.” Whenever possible, the setting of the climatic scene in a hunting video should be preselected, using knowledge of the terrain and the current habits of the resident game as a guide. Under those circumstances, it’s often possible to situate the cameraman in a natural or artificial blind, but some effective videos have been shot with both the hunter and the cameraman in the same blind. Lacking a blind or blinds, the hunter must set up where he’s hidden from the approaching game. That often means putting the cameraman in some uncomfortable positions. That last bit of advice reminded me of something Vanderpool didn’t cover in this particular interview. While getting the best possible raw footage on tape is obviously crucial, the final production of a top quality professional or amateur video takes place in the editing room. No amateur is going to have access to the sophisticated equipment used by professionals, but there are inexpensive video-editing hardware/software packages on the market. These consumer-grade products may not be capable of turning out a video that will impress the Outdoor Channel’s senior producer, but they will create a video that will be the envy of your friends. And wasn’t that the point? gjsa@sbcglobal.net
