Former Democrat reporter and columnist Ron Jennings was greeted with a standing ovation from family and peers after his induction into the Missouri Press Association Hall of Fame Friday night in Branson. Jennings was among six inductees during the MPA’s 21st induction ceremony, held last weekend in conjunction with the group’s 145th annual convention. He was joined by family members and former co-workers during Friday’s ceremony. Jennings, who worked for the Democrat from 1972 to 2007, is the first Democrat journalist to receive the honor, and was added to this year’s honorees after a nomination effort led by Democrat Editor Bob Satnan and former reporter Jay Nies. With health issues keeping Ron from speaking during the ceremony, his thoughts and words were shared with attendees by his brother, Steve. “First of all, you need to know that I never saw this coming,” Steve read. “After recovering from the shock of such happy news, the reality of it all began to sink in. And, the reality is, simply, that I have been allowed the great honor of standing on the shoulders of giants.” Jennings said these “giants” included the MPA, his alma mater, the University of Missouri — Columbia School of Journalism, former and current

• On Sept. 22, 1598, English playwright Ben Jonson is indicted for manslaughter after a duel. He was very nearly hanged, but his ability to read and write saved him. He claimed "benefit of clergy," which allowed him to be sentenced by the lenient ecclesiastical courts. Jonson was as famous in his time as Shakespeare. • On Sept. 21, 1866, H.G. Wells, pioneer of science fiction, is born in Bromley, England. In 1895, he published his classic novel "The Time Machine," about a man who journeys to the future. The book was a success, as was "The War of the Worlds" (1898).

• On Sept. 20, 1881, Chester Arthur becomes third president to serve in one year. The year began with Rutherford B. Hayes in office. Hayes served out his term and turned over the reins to James A. Garfield. Four months later, Garfield was shot by an assassin but did not die until Sept. 19. Vice President Arthur was then sworn in as president. • On Sept. 24, 1890, faced with the eminent destruction of their church and way of life, Mormon leaders reluctantly issue the "Mormon Manifesto" in which they command all Latter-day Saints to uphold the laws of the nation and abandon polygamy. • On Sept. 23, 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt is forced to defend his dog's honor and his own reputation. Critics had circulated a story claiming that Roosevelt had accidentally left Fala behind while visiting the Aleutian Islands earlier that year. They accused the president of sending a Navy destroyer, at taxpayer expense of up to $20 million, to go back and pick up the dog. • On Sept. 19, 1957, the United States detonates a 1.7 kiloton nuclear weapon in an underground tunnel in Nevada. The test was part of a series of 29 nuclear weapons and nuclear weapons safety tests known as Operation Plumbbob.

• On Sept. 25, 1981, Sandra Day O'Connor becomes the first female U.S. Supreme Court justice in history when she is sworn in by Chief Justice Warren Burger. CELEBRITY EXTRA

Q: Can you tell me when my favorite show, "The Biggest Loser," will be back for its next season? I can't wait for it to start! -- Edie T., via e-mail A: The weight-loss competition/reality show will be back for its 12th season on NBC beginning Tuesday, Sept. 20 (8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET). This season sees "The Biggest Loser" with two new trainers: tennis star Anna Kournikova (who replaces Jillian Michaels) and celebrity trainer Dolvett Quince. Trainer Bob Harper and host Alison Sweeney will return, and they will be joined by 15 contestants competing in a "Battle of the Ages," which groups contestants by age. There will be three teams of five divided by age: the youngest players, all under 30; the middle players, ages 30 to 49; and the older players, ages 50 and above. *** Q: I loved "Spin City," and I can find the seasons with Michael J. Fox as the star on DVD, but can't find the seasons when Charlie Sheen took over. Do they ever plan to release those seasons? -- Darren D., Spokane, Wash. A: When Michael J. Fox retired from the successful sitcom after the fourth season, Charlie Sheen joined Heather Locklear and company, taking over as Deputy Mayor Charlie Crawford for the fifth and sixth seasons. The fifth season also was a who's who of guest stars, including Marcia Cross, Kal Penn, Regis Philben, Raquel Welch, Dakota Fanning, Jason Priestley, Rosie O'Donnell, Seth Meyers, Scott Wolf and Alyssa Milano. Season five is finally available on DVD, and can be found online and wherever your favorite DVDs are sold. *** Q: This spring I really got into Christian Slater's new show called "Breaking In." I was so sad when it was canceled by Fox. Now I am hearing it might not be canceled. Is that true? -- Dylan F., via e-mail A: In an almost-unprecedented re-

Anna Kournikova versal, Fox decided to uncancel the caper comedy that centered on a team that is hired by companies to break into their own security systems in order to find flaws and weak links. Back in May, all signs pointed to "Breaking In" coming back for the fall, but when the fall schedule was announced a short time later, the show was nowhere to be seen. After much behind-the-scenes negotiation, Fox announced in August that the show would be back for 13 episodes to begin airing midseason 2012. *** Q: I was an avid viewer of the ABC show "V," and especially loved the character of Father Landry. Can you tell me if I can see the actor who played him in anything else soon? -Vivian A. in Pennsylvania A: Joel Gretsch, who played freedom fighter and priest Jack Landry on the ABC sci-fi show about aliens invading Earth, has risen from the ashes of "V" and can next be seen this fall on NBC's "The Playboy Club" as a recurring character who clashes with Eddie Cibrian's Nick Dalton. Your Safety

Be Mindful Of Motorcycles

(NAPS)—An average of three lives a day could be saved, experts estimate, if motorists and motorcyclists were more careful at intersections. In fact, crash data reveals that motorcycle crashes happen more often at intersections than anywhere else, relative to the amount of time riders spend in them. To help, one major insurance company is putting up caution signs on roads all over the country. The yellow, diamond-shaped signs feature a motorcycle silhouette and are inscribed with the word “LOOK” to encourage motorists to look for motorcycles before crossing an intersection. It’s all part of Allstate’s “Once is Never Enough” (ONE) program, designed to remind drivers and riders that looking once at intersections is never enough. “In the time it takes to blink an eye, a life could be saved,” said Keith Rutman, vice president of Allstate’s consumer household unit. Fortunately, there are things drivers, riders and others can do.

Tips for Motorists • Be cautious when going through intersections. • Look left, right and left again for motorcyclists. Also, be Motorists and motorcyclists should look aware that because of a motorcy- out for each other, especially at interseccle’s small size, a bike can easily tions. hide in a car’s blind spot. • Allow for greater following distance. Most motorcyclists do not activate their brake light when slowing down. They slow down by downshifting. • Don’t assume motorcyclists are speeding. Due to their small size, motorcycles may seem to be moving faster and appear farther away than they really are. • Motorcyclists often adjust position within a lane. This helps them be seen more easily by motorists. They also tend to avoid the center of the lane because of liquids that leak from car engines, transmissions and radiators. Tips for Motorcyclists • Be cautious when going through intersections. • Be visible when you ride. Try to avoid blind spots, wear bright-colored, protective clothing, activate turn signals early and always use your headlights. • Flash your brake lights when slowing down. This helps others on the road know your intentions. • Leave enough space between you and the car in front of you. You’ll have more time to react to other motorists’ actions. • Ride within your limits. If you’re a new rider, consider taking a training course. Rush hour is not the time to learn how to maneuver your motorcycle. All riders should avoid extreme temperatures and inclement weather.

Contact your advertising representative if you would like to have your business featured in this space.

Col. Landy W. Caldwell, Auctioneer 660-463-1144

Making most of first weeks of archery season I took my own advice from a few weeks ago, and I’m now done setting up fixed position stands. I have stands ready and waiting in all of my best spots, plus a couple of new places I can’t wait to try out. About now, many of my fellow bowhunters are saying, “What’s his big hurry?” The archery season legally opens Thursday, but the real archery season doesn’t open until late October and the first week of November. That’s when I’m going to be in the woods. The first week of November is a glorious time to hunt deer. No matter how good a deer hunter may be or how hard he or she hunts, there’s a lot of luck involved in getting an arrow and any deer to occupy the same space at the same time, let alone a trophy buck. The last thing I want is to have either the big buck I want for my wall or the young doe I want for my freezer to abandon the patterns I’ve been studying for months and start charging through the woods willy nilly. That’s not a problem in the last half of September and about the first three weeks of October. Big bucks and does don’t spend a lot of time deliberately seeking out each other’s company at this time of the year, but the No. 1 priority for both sexes is to ingest as much of the best quality forage available as possible in order to build energy reserves for the upcoming rut and ensuing winter. This imperative often puts deer of both sexes in the same feeding areas at roughly the same time. The key to early season success is hunt choke points on the trails leading to feeding areas. Depending on the terrain, these choke points include creek crossings, saddles along ridge lines, gaps or low spots in fences and the intersections of hedge rows or other narrow, but well defined, boundaries. In central Missouri, creek crossings are my favorite stand location. Deer are excellent swimmers, and they can clamber up nearly vertical banks, but they

GERALD SCOTT ... is an outdoors writer and columnist for The Plainsman

seldom do so if there’s an easier alternative close to where they wanted to go. Whenever it’s practical, I prefer to set up on a creek crossing or other choke point that’s as close to the local deer herd’s bedding area as possible. Deer are often active for two hours or more after daylight in the morning but may not start moving until nearly sunset in the evening. Being close to the bedding area allows me plenty of time to get in place in the morning and the best chance to see deer in the evening during legal shooting hours. The fly in the ointment is that no deer stand is any good if it can’t be approached without alerting the hunter’s intended targets. While a deer’s senses of sight and hearing should never be discounted, most approachability problems involve finding a way to defeat the deer’s phenomenal sense of smell. If you think there is any product you can spray on yourself or any type of clothing you can wear that will hide your scent from a deer’s nostrils, you’re mistaken. The answer to this dilemma is quite simple. If the air currents are moving from you to the deer’s nose or if it crosses the path you walked in on, it will smell you. If neither of those things happens, it won’t. What makes working as hard as necessary to find a good stand during the first few weeks of the season is that both bucks and does are predictable at this time of the year. They use the same trails at about the same time of day for weeks at a time. gjsa@sbcglobal.net
