Friendship takes on a special relationship among soldiers, especially those involved in the life or death struggle of combat operations. Each soldier looks to his comrades for support as they engage the enemy in hostile action. The bond created from those special relationships can last a lifetime. For the 42nd year, Richard Strobel’s mortar platoon gathered for a reunion, this time at his farm in Concordia. The story began in 1967. Strobel and his buddies were drafted into the Army. After basic and infantry training, they were shipped to Vietnam where they were assigned to the 4th Platoon, Delta Company, 6th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division. Their area of combat for the next year would be south of Saigon in the Mekong Delta, an area full of rivers and swamps. Strobel said, “For that year in Vietnam, my feet were seldom dry.” Strobel’s unit was attached to the Mobile Riverine Assault Force. The platoon’s primary function was to lob 81-mm mortars into enemy positions. At times, his unit went aboard specially constructed boats that operated on one of the rivers in the delta. The mortar was an effective weapon as its explosive power was devastating if it hit an enemy position. Life out in the Mekong Delta was never comfortable. Operating in grass as tall as a soldier, deadly ambush from the enemy was always a threat. Strobel said, “We didn’t have to worry about cold weather, the temperature was almost always about 100 degrees.” Blood-sucking leaches — the scorn of the American soldier in Vietnam — and mosquitoes were always harassing the platoon. To get rid of them, the men burned them off with a lighted cigarette or used what was known as “bug juice.” Even after removal, the leeches left their claws imbedded in a person’s skin. The war in Vietnam was fought with a new weapon — the helicopter. The days of soldiers walking many many miles into battle were over. Whenever Strobel and his comrades went into combat, they were airlifted in groups of eight soldiers per helicopter into the battle area. Another helicopter called the Cobra was, in reality, a “gun ship” pro-

viding fire support to the infantry units. Their enemy was the Viet Cong. The VC wore civilian clothes and blended in with civilians. Strobel said, “One had to be careful as you didn’t know who the enemy was walking in the villages and who would suddenly strike at an American soldier.” On Aug. 12-14, Strobel and six of his comrades met at his home. The reunion, held every two years, would not be complete without the helicopter that the group rode many times into battle. Strobel arranged a visit to Whiteman Air Force Base, where the Army National Guard‘s 135th Attack Battalion with helicopters is stationed. The group also visited the Whiteman control tower. The reunions of Strobel and his battlefield buddies began when one of their platoon members, Denny Nester, was hit by a claymore mine. He was severely injured and eventually transferred to Walter Reed Hospital. Members of the 4th Platoon never got to say good-bye to their wounded comrade. When the group returned to the United States on April 4, 1969, they agreed to meet 90 days later and surprise their recovering buddy at his home in Eden, Ohio. Nester’s mother was contacted and advised of the surprise visit and told not to let him know. Nester was shocked to see them and they agreed to meet once a year. In order to accomplish this, each member volunteered their home and served as host on a rotational basis. After 10 years, they agreed to meet every other year. The original group of eight lost one of their members, Tom Park, in 1994. Many of the deaths of Vietnam veterans have been linked to Agent Orange. Members of the 4th Platoon remember putting their collars up as airplanes flew over the group on the battlefield spraying Agent Orange. Several of the reunion members said they grew up and matured from their time in the Army. For the war, Strobel and his comrades felt it was time wasted. The war cost a lot of lives, left several soldiers seriously handicapped for life and cost the U.S. billions of dollars that might have been used more effectively elsewhere.

At one time or another over the years I’ve fished every type of flat water from quarter-acre farm ponds to the Pacific Ocean and every type of flowing water from trickles narrow enough to jump across to the Mississippi River. So far, I haven’t found a body of water where I didn’t enjoy spending my time, but I do have a favorite near which I most enjoy whiling away my time. I’m (hopefully) at least a ways away from the end of a lifelong love affair with creeks. But what is a creek? This is one of those rare times when Noah Webster, who no doubt fished creeks himself, is no help. My dictionary uses mind-numbing circular logic to define the differences among brooks, creeks, streams and rivers. My approach is simpler. Although I have no intention of disputing the official designation given to a particular stream, as far as I’m concerned, any at least seasonally flowing watercourse narrow enough to cast a baited hook or lure across is a creek. There are a lot of reasons I love creeks, but high on the list is no matter where in the Midwest I travel, there will always be at least a couple of enticing creeks nearby. Given half a chance, you can bet that I’ll pay them a visit. Another admirable thing about creeks is that all of them can be fished from the bank and many of the smaller ones can be waded. Since the overwhelming majority of anglers don’t own boats, that’s an advantage that should be exploited far more often than it is. Meanwhile, fishermen, who prefer the freedom to explore afforded by boats, will find that small boats and large creeks are a match made in heaven. No single creek is a suitable place to use every type of fishing tackle, nor is any single creek home to every species of fish a Midwestern angler might want to catch. That said, it’s all but certain that there’s a combination of creeks within an hour’s drive of where you’re sitting right now that offer a rodwaving variety of angling possibilities. Almost every fan of fly rods and ultralight spinning tackle is already well aware that the coolest reaches of spring-fed creeks are fine places to fish for trout, but relatively few realize that clear, gravel-bottomed creeks that are a few degrees too warm to support trout could provide them with faster action for a wider variety of species of fish. I’ll never forget an afternoon a friend and I spent wading a Lake of the Ozarks tributary called Buffalo Creek. We caught several smallmouth and largemouth bass — the creek’s glamour species — but they weren’t the fish that made the trip so much fun. It was the dozens of creek chubs, green sunfish and bluegills that enthusiastically attacked

Clear, cool water flowing down a creek has a powerful natural allure, but most Midwestern creeks have earthen banks, soft bottoms and warm water that ranges in color from dingy to opaque. If ever there was a textbook case of appearances being deceiving, these creeks are it. Not only are they home to a surprisingly wide variety of fish species, but they are also excellent places to gather the main ingredient for a fish dinner. I learned to fish while wielding a cane pole along the banks of a small creek. Sometimes I was accompanied by my grandfather or one of his brothers, but, on Sunday afternoons, visits to Pipe Creek were family affairs. Bullheads were the target species. Thanks to pollution and siltation, good bullhead creeks are harder to find these days, but they still exist. If totally laid-back fishing sounds like your cup of tea, finding one is worth the effort. Larger warm water creeks are less likely to have large numbers of bullheads, but all of them are home to one of North America’s most edible and most sporting fish, the channel cat. Other game fish species found in many medium to large creeks — especially those that are tributaries of either the Missouri or Mississippi rivers — include varying combinations of white bass, black bass, crappie, walleye, sauger and during their spring spawning run, paddlefish. Throw in carp, drum, suckers and other nongame species and it’s easy to see why something is almost always biting in a creek. I’ve already mentioned cane poles, fly rods and ultralight spinning tackle, but all three are specialized equipment. They’re the best choice only for a limited number of anglers in a limited number of situations. For general creek fishing, the spin casting, spinning or bait casting outfit you already have will do just fine. Hooks, weights, baits and lures should be kept equally basic. This is one of those times I’ve saved the best for last. Creeks are by far the most underutilized fishing opportunity. Nancy McKeon ‘Apollo 13’ and ‘Twister’ fame -- is set to play Randall McCoy, the famed arch nemesis of ‘Devil’ Anse Hatfield. *** Q: I'm excited that my favorite show, ‘90210,’ is coming back to the CW soon. Can you give me any teasers for this season? -- Heidi R., Washington, D.C. A: ‘90210’ returns for its fourth season on Tuesday, Sept. 13. I spoke with Michael Steger, who plays Navid Shirazi, and he gave me the scoop (but not enough to get him in trouble). ‘Navid’s going to be working with Dixon, but Dixon’s no longer working FOR Navid. Max and Naomi and the whole pregnancy bomb at the finale, they address that in the first episode. Also, Navid’s family flies to Switzerland to be with his father, but his sister doesn’t get on the plane. Navid does see Adrianna again, and it’s a very awkward situation, but they do talk in the first two episodes. Also, we’re doing a lot more location stuff. I’m excited because there’s a lot more action going on.’

He also wrote "Tortilla Flat," "East of Eden" and the novella "Of Mice and Men." • On Sept. 18, 1987, cesium-137 is removed from an abandoned cancer-therapy machine in Brazil. Junkyard workers, fascinated by the glowing blue stone inside and completely unaware of its dangers, distributed pieces to friends, relatives and neighbors. There is suffering and even death during such events, but the human race has the ability to be resilient during the worst of times. The problem is we writes about his don’t ever seem to many interests in life learn from experiences, so the cycle continues. Originally we were hunter-gatherers; that is, we survived on what we could find around us and moved on when that supply ran out. (This allowed the area to replenish itself over time.) About 30,000 years ago we learned to cultivate cereal grains and became so dependent on that source of food that we didn’t pursue or develop other sources. Then 25,000 years ago, there was a miniice age on Earth. Because of the sustained cold weather, cereal grains would not grow and man nearly disappeared. History records these events over and over. As late as the middle of the 19th century the potato famine hit Northern Ireland. The potato was introduced to Europe in the early 1800s from South America. It caught on quickly being filling, nutritious and easy to grow. When the potato reached the British Isles, Northern Ireland, with its rich soils, cool temperature and frequent rain were ideal for growing this tuber. A potato called the “Lumper” became the favorite. After several generations, the local Irish farmers were sustaining themselves almost entirely on this potato. In 1845 the potato blight hit and continued for six years. Unable to adjust their single-source diet, more than a million people starved to death and a million more immigrated to the United States. Yet the Irish people and their decedents thrive today — and still eat potatoes. During one of those hot days this last summer; I was up in our lane sitting in my Gator enjoying a cool one in the shade of the trees. The urge to find something to eat requires constant movement. Most animals and birds stash food for the oncoming dormant or cold season. Those who don’t have learned to migrate to greener pastures or, in some cases, hibernate over the lean period. In the case of the turkey, it has an uncanny ability to find caches of food stored by others. Deer often change their diets and eat bark or dig for roots during winter. Such behavior is passed on from one generation to the next. We humans seem to have lost or ignored the sage advice from the previous generation. It always amazes me that during an impending disaster the first thing to disappear from store shelves is water! We must have water to survive, so why is water not stored ahead of time in disaster-prone areas? I grew up in a period when people raised a great deal of their own food. The surplus was canned and stored in a cellar or in the basement — even meat was preserved this way. My grandparents were not poor or destitute — that’s just the way they were raised. Maybe the hunter-gatherer instinct was stronger back then. The bottom line was, they were prepared. The thing that bothers me today is that it seems most people depend on the federal government to bail them out when disaster strikes. Then they move back to the same vulnerable area where they were wiped out. I realize that fishermen must live near the seashore, and you cannot keep people away from the rich soil in floodplains or the fertile slopes of a volcano. But let’s get real, folks: The rewards must justify the risks. There are the freak acts of Mother Nature, like Joplin, for example, and the humanitarian response to that disaster was inspiring. I heard on the news that most people living in New York City do not own a car. So why did they not heed the warning given days before Irene struck and take the train out of harm’s way? Are we getting too blase about danger coming that we just don’t pay attention or think someone will come and rescue us? We may be resilient, but why put ourselves in harm’s way unnecessarily?
