Bob Stanan/Democrat Gene and Jo Colvin, of Sedalia, donate much of their time supporting the American Red Cross.

Jo Colvin holds an image of a Hurricane Katrina victim holding a sign requesting food or water since he and his neighbors had been without nourishment for two days. “That says it all,” Jo said, explaining why she gives so much of her time to the American Red Cross. She said Samuel, the man in the Katrina photo, is “the sweetest man” and once she and other volunteers helped him, he stayed with the Red Cross crew and worked to help others. Jo worked in the Katrina-ravaged bayou for three months, coming home just four days before Thanksgiving 2005. Once she got home, the Red Cross asked her to return; her grandchildren didn’t like the idea. “It affects your family,” she said. “It’s hard, but sometimes you have to stay home.” Staying put is a challenge for Jo and her husband, Gene. Both volunteer substantial amounts of time to the Red Cross, and Gene is a race official for NASCAR, so he is on the road many weeks throughout the year. Years ago, Jo and Gene decided to make two-year time commitments to various groups, including United Way, CASA and Special Olympics. But Jo said when they started working with Red Cross, she knew, “This is where I need to be.” The Colvins’ bond with Red Cross began in 2004 when Hurricane Ivan hit the Atlantic coast. Gene was preparing to head out of town for a race and Jo asked, “What if I went to help?” Jo was at the Red Cross chapter in Kansas City the next day, then was flown to the disaster area within 24 hours after that. Gene said Jo works about five days a month with the local Red Cross chapter, mainly assisting with fires but she also did a lot of work when the tornado hit Sedalia in May. In those circumstances, Jo, who serves on the chapter’s board of directors, helps set up hotel rooms for displaced families, and makes sure people have proper medications, eye glasses, insulin and food. Jo heaped praise on Tom Adermann, general manager of the Best Western State Fair Inn, for his efforts when disaster strikes locally. “He is so good,” Jo said. “We couldn’t have anyone better” when it comes to providing shelter for families displaced by fires or storms. But the Red Cross is not the only beneficiary of the Colvins’ volunteer spirit. Four generations of their family work on behalf of Salvation

Army, especially at Christmas time. It is a tradition started by Jo’s mother, Geneva Ford Stout, who used to ring bells at the red kettle when they lived in Arizona and would bring her four daughters with her. “We ring bells as much as we can,” Jo said, noting that their grandson Adam, 3, brings in more money than anyone in the family when he is helping out. The Colvins’ daughter, Rebecca, lives in a group home, and Jo and Gene bring the residents out to ring bells. Jo said the residents enjoy the experience, and she and Gene watch them from a distance to let them have their independence, but still be supervised. Jo also does customer service work for the Missouri State Fair. Fair Director Mark Wolfe said the staff there knows that the Red Cross work is Jo’s “first love, it’s something she is dedicated to.” So when disaster strikes and Jo needs to hit the road, Wolfe lets her take all the time she needs. “We’re glad to have her when we do. She is a tremendous help around here,” Wolfe said. “She has the true spirit of a volunteer, and she works hard at anything she takes on.” Wolfe not only appreciates Jo’s volunteerism, but also her sense of humor. “She is comical as all get out ... it’s fun to have her around,” he said. Also at Christmas, Jo and Gene lend a hand to family friend Carol McMillin and the Community Santa program. Last year, with the help of a couple of their grandchildren, they made 35 to 40 baskets of cookies that were distributed to needy seniors along with holiday food vouchers. “There’s nothing like homemade cooking at Christmas,” Jo said. The Colvins plan to help out again this year, only it will be cupcakes instead of cookies. Gene said their kitchen becomes an assembly line, with their grandchildren and Rebecca’s group home residents pitching in. “Putting a little sparkle in someone’s eyes — that is what you do it for,” Jo said. Gene stressed the Sedalia area’s generosity, saying, “This is a very giving town.” As an example, the Colvins pointed to May’s tornado. “We spent less than $100 over five days (on food) thanks to all of the donations,” Jo said. That giving spirit drives the Colvins every day. “Red Cross is why God put us on this earth,” Jo said. “It is my calling, where I am supposed to be.”

CELEBRITY EXTRA

Q: I am loving the new fall season so far -- lots of good shows and only a few stinkers in the bunch. Which shows are you digging so far? -- Clyde R., via email A: In the drama category, far and away my favorite show has to be ABC's "Revenge," which has injected a much-needed shot of campy, soapy, sexy drama into my Wednesday nights. (If you are on Twitter, you can follow my live-tweeting feeds at twitter.com/celebrity_extra every Wednesday starting at 10 p.m. ET, where all of us "Revenge" fans whoop and holler together.) I haven't had this much fun watching a nighttime drama -- nor have I talked to the TV screen so much -- since "Melrose Place." On the comedy side, it's a tie between Zooey Deschanel's "New Girl" on Fox and ABC's "Suburgatory," whose ensemble cast of Jeremy Sisto, Jane Levy, Cheryl Hines, Alan Tudyk and Ana Gasteyer has me wiping tears of laughter from my face every episode. *** Q: I love watching "The Talk" every afternoon. What happened to two of the original hostesses, Holly Robinson Peete and Leah Remini? -- Joanne M., Fairport, N.Y. A: Holly's and Leah's contracts were not renewed by CBS after the first season. As of Sept. 6 and Oct. 23, respectively, CBS officially replaced them with Sheryl Underwood and Aisha Tyler. *** Q: I really like "Prime Suspect," especially the actor who plays Detective Blando. Can you tell me a little about him? He looks so familiar. -- Gennifer F., Allentown, Pa. A: Tim Griffin, 42, has starred and guest-starred in countless TV series and big-screen movies, including "Party of Five," "Charmed," "Grey's Anatomy," "The Bourne Supremacy," "24," "Iron Man," "The Men Who Stare at Goats," and most recently, "Super 8" and "Abduction." I spoke with Tim about his role in the American version of the British cop drama and asked if he had any qualms about trying to "remake" such a popular series. Tim told me: "It wasn't really until we started

Tim Griffin doing the initial press work that I realized, 'OK, this is a sacred institution,' because I was a huge fan of the British series too. It's almost like a trial by fire that you have to go through. Can it be envisioned, reimagined with an American voice? "Our partners are the original producers of the original ‘Prime Suspect,’ Tim said. "So we have that entire cannon of scripts at our disposal, and we have Peter Berg as the executive producer and director. It's like its own new animal." *** Q: I read somewhere that James Van Der Beek's wife recently had another baby. Didn't they just have a daughter? -- Barb D., via e-mail A: You are halfway correct, Barb. James and wife Kimberly have a daughter, Olivia, who recently turned 1, and are expecting their second child next year. James tweeted: "Just when we thought we couldn't feel any more blessed, it seems the universe has plans to give our daughter a sibling." (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Tips To Help Alleviate Caregiving Stress

(NAPS)—While family caregiving can be rewarding, it can make life more stressful for those providing the care. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this type of stress affects women more then men. Women caregivers tend to offer more assistance, such as managing physical needs. Three out of four caregivers, men and women, report feeling strained emotionally, physically or financially. The stress involved can be worse for caregivers of the elderly, as it is hard to watch a parent lose cognitive abilities. It’s not unusual for caregivers to develop health problems of their own. Part of the reason is that they are less likely to take good care of themselves due to time and money constraints imposed by caregiving. Caregivers may not have the time for regular checkups, may not fill a pre- Care For The Caregiver: It’s not unusual scription due to cost, miss for caregivers to develop health probsleep or forget to eat healthy lems of their own. A home Care Professional can coordinate a patient’s plan of care under the direction of his or her doctor. Supportive services from a home care company can help with bathing, preparing meals, shopping, companionship, transportation and limited light housework.

Make list of must-haves for deer hunt GERALD Don’t forget your permits

For fanatical deer hunters — including those who’ve been bowhunting for the past eight weeks — life gets hectic the last few days before opening day of the firearms deer season. For the one-weekend-per-year crowd, confusion reigns supreme. In either case, the odds that some vital, semivital or I-wish-I-had-one-of-those items will be left behind increase geometrically with the distance between the hunter’s home and his hunting grounds. I’ve proven this to be true by scientific methodology, and I’m sure you all know what that means. Permits top the list of things not to forget, and enough hunters forget to purchase them to make hunting without the proper permits(s) high on the list of violations encountered by conservation agents. I learned how inconvenient this memory lapse can be when I parked my car a few hundred yards from a spot I’d been dreaming about bowhunting for months. I reached into the glove box to transfer a deer and a turkey permit to my coat pocket only to discover that there weren’t any permits to transfer. The only thing I could do was return to town. I bought my permits the next day. This story does have a happy ending because the first time I hunted that stand I shot both a deer and a turkey from it within an hour of each other. This year, hunters will have to remember to carry some means of attaching the new, nonsticky permits to their deer. I folded my permit in half and then punched a hole throughout — trying my best to avoid any pertinent information. I plan to wrap the permit around my deer’s hock and then fasten it there with a small plastic cable tie. Whatever means you choose, make sure the permit stays put until the deer arrives at its processing location but is removable so the Telecheck ID number can be written on it prior to reattaching the permit to the deer. A blaze orange vest and hat are as unforgettable as permits. Except on conservation areas where only archery methods are legal, wearing blaze orange is both a legal and a common sense requirement for all hunters during any of the various firearms deer seasons. Ammunition is another easily forgotten, yet vital item. Just to prove it could be done, take my blackpowder hunt 200 miles from home as an example. I realized that I didn’t load the large tackle box that held my powder, bullets, primers, cleaning kit and approximately a zillion

other blackpowder accessories. Maybe I shouldn’t include an efficient hunting knife on my list of things not to forget, because leaving your knife at home is the surest way to need it I know. If you believed I left my blackpowder box behind as a demonstration, there’s a chance you’ll believe I’ve left my Buck Folding Hunter at home twice just so I could see what an interesting chore field-dressing a deer with a 1-inch penknife can be. Both pairs of gloves and single gloves all too often get left behind, albeit only when the weather is or becomes bitterly cold. My own gloves have become so adept at evading capture the night before opening day, I stash hopefully matched pairs in my car, in the pockets of all of my coats and in my fanny pack. Now let’s see them all hide at the same time! For many hunters, food and water don’t get forgotten, because they weren’t on the take list in the first place. It took me decades to learn that having food and water — especially water — readily available makes hunting less of an endurance contest. In the real world, this means that hunters who have quart of water and a couple of protein bars in their pockets stay in the woods longer. Hunters who spend more time hunting, kill more deer. It really is as simple as that. Although I forget mine an embarrassing number of times per year, a decent — by which I mean better than the one in a phone — digital camera should be an item not to forget. Once in a lifetime moments are exactly that. I’ve never heard anyone say, “I wish I hadn’t taken pictures of those two bucks fighting or of that sunrise or of my first 10-pointer while he was still in the woods. The last, but by far most important thing not to forget, is the right attitude. Some of you will be pursuing outsized antlers with a zeal unmatched since the Crusaders sought the Holy Grail. Others, myself included, put equal mental and physical effort into harvesting enough deer to insure their families a full year’s supply of red meat. There’s nothing inherently improper in either of those approaches to deer hunting. Or more correctly, there’s nothing wrong with concentrating on one facet of deer hunting so long as that facet doesn’t block the view of what the sport is supposed to be about, returning to the natural world from which our species sprang. gjsa@sbcglobal.net

After almost three decades at the helm, Regis Philbin bids farewell to his “Live” family in this final episode as co-host. His trademark ad libs and quick wit have made him a staple of the daytime talk show circuit and fans will be sad to see him go.

(DISC)

The family organizes a community drive when a neighbor’s house burns down in “Modern Family,” airing Wednesday, Nov. 19, on ABC. However, their good deed goes awry when Jay throws his back out, Cameron has problems with a huge moving truck and Claire discovers Mitchell and Gloria have been spending a lot of time together.
