EARLY WORKS Bachelor study projects Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus (2005-2007)

During the first years of the Bachelor study i started working with analog design tools like progress models, sketches and ink drawings. For the models it was most important for me to experiment and understand the capability and haptics of various materials. From pencil and ink drawings i learned a traditional perspective in experiencing with representation possibilities without getting distracted from digital effects.

LISBONS HOTEL ESCOLA Tradition and Modernity Universidade Aut贸noma de Lisboa (February - April 2011)

Fitting in the existing typical complex and narrow urban fabric of Lisbon, the new created compound combined a public Hotel with a Hotel educational school facility. These two different functions are intertwining with each other throughout the whole site. This hybrid structure is in it self accessible through a central facilitating square. Therefore each facility is in a relation to the others. For Hotel guests it is always possible to see and feel the presents of the educational background and the infrastructure, and the students are able to reflect their working exercise with the consequences at the costumer level.

CITY OF APPLES A fictional future proposal for a city in the alps University of Innsbruck (July 2011)

Envisioning the city of the future, a major source of inspiration was the metaphor of the „Paradise“ as a utopian reality. This future city is a place where a new race of living species are produced and nurtured by means of genetic modification, and artificial selection. This new breed constitutes the inhabitants of the future city, which is constantly evolving. The futuristic city we envision has no rules, no ethics. The future city undergoes constantly a modification of existent reality in generation of utopia as a lived experience. In Norse mythology, the Prose Edda scripts constantly mentioned the apple, as a magical fruit, a special unique breed of fruits which had healing powers. The „Apple of Sin“; this different unique apple, which had different characteristics. This symbol of the „special fruit“, the taboo, and the approaching of its pleasure, had been the reason why mankind was banished out of paradise, out of utopia. Isn’t mankind nowadays creating his own utopia on earth? The site in Obergurgl is located south west of Austria, on the south eastern periphery of Innsbruck, in the region of Tirol; famous for its large apple production, and bordering Italy, the first biggest producer of Apples in Europe. Around 150 kilometers away from Obergurgl is the Italian city of Trentino, a city famous for its production of the ground breaking genetically modified Golden Delicious Apple Genome, possessing more than 57000 genes, 992 of which are responsible for disease resistance, exceeding the number of human genes. Human-made technology could produce „utopian“ apples on earth. Our future city; the City of Gold, The City of Apples. The dwellers in the city experience two levels of reality, a fake modified artificial-natural landscape of the apple gardens on the surface, and another truth of this product; the underground laboratories where manmade machines are genetically modifying the apple trees from their roots, beneath the layer of earth, to monitor, alter and produce varying breeding of unique apples. The visitors to the city experience only the beautiful paradise reality on the surface, whereas, the inhabitants of the city experience the two layers, the pleasure of feeding on trees apples, and the duty of growing, breeding and modifying them from below. The dwellers inhabit the skin of the city, the artificial layer of landscape in between the two realities, the laboratories and the gardens. A light organic skin covers the city like a veil. It acts as an incubator which creates suitable conditions for the apple trees to grow and dwellers to live. The veil is an organic skin that interacts with forces of nature, throughout the different seasons.

BEING AND TIME Entropy experiment at the dune of Bolonia Universidad de Sevilla (October 2011)

How does something gets an identity? What is time? What is being? ‘Time is not a thing, thus nothing which is, and yet it remains constant in its passing away without being something temporal like the beings in time.’ Martin Heidegger

BUFFERZONES Along the Costa del Sol Universidad de Sevilla (November 2011) The project considers a territorial transformation on the coast, a phenomenon of critical importance both at European and international levels. Given its outstanding geography and climate, the development of tourism on the Andalusian coast, specifically the western part of the Costa del Sol, but also beyond, on the shores of the Strait of Gibraltar, started as early as the 1950s. An interpretation of this area as a potential model for tourism led to a process of accelerated urban development driven by aggressive speculation throughout the second half of the 20th century. This part of the Andalusian coast is now, at the beginning of the 21st century, fully consolidated: studies that consider this area purely on the basis of tourism, however, are incomplete and it is necessary to adopt a wider overview which encompasses not only tourism as a key feature, but also other dynamics in the area. As the phenomenon is so complex, however, it is impossible to apply traditional research tools or a linear methodology. The prevailing trend towards oversimplification and a macro-analysis of the territory in isolation, a reductive, homogenous approach, needs to be counterbalanced by historical, critical and architectonic considerations reflecting a multifaceted system that is both plural and diverse. ‘Bufferzones’ reacts to the subject in different scales. In the macro scale we see the whole Costa del Sol area as one entity with punctual buffer zones around the neglected heritage. As a first step to connect the original identity of the coast with the nowadays use as a tourist destination, the historical Watchtowers, which more and more vanish between the contemporary touristic developments, getting reactivated and hereby reconnecting this former link between each other. (Bufferzone 0)

In the next step and in a smaller scale we observed the conditions in Estepona, one of the denser populated areas. By exploring the city with a ‘Dérive’ we examined the lack public space and a consequential social separation between local residents and temporary tourists. Among this two different population groups are our next defined buffer zones which create a public common space to provide possibilities for enhanced exchange. (Bufferzone 1 + 2 + 3)

In a last step, we focused on the micro scale and observed the space right around the historical watchtower. We created a defined space which is representing the tower and a link to its former purpose, the connection to the water. With this subtle interverence we get the identity of this heritage connected to the city. (Bufferzone 4 + 5)

EMPTINESS Between Tel Aviv and Jaffa David Azrieli Scool of Architecture (December 2011)

Former district of Menashiya, an Arabian neighbourhood of Jaffa, deserted in 1948 and demolished in the 60’s, causes a dilemma of separation and space between Jaffa and Tel Aviv which is still not solved. We decided to design the blank, filling the hole with emptiness and underlining the left over space, giving it its own strength and identity - neither Tel Aviv nor Jaffa. The aim is a space of consciousness without specific connotations which causes the user to reflect and contemplate. A topography supported by punctual interventions with its own programme, beyond commerce, and a space in between which works as a resonance body that allows flexible activities.

COSTA DEL MONUMENTO The architectural traces of the global crisis at the Costa del Sol Master’s Thesis (April - September 2012)

The Master Thesis project is dealing with the topic of unfinished and abandoned construction sites. This phenomenon has its roots in the time of mass construction and speculation developments, which was followed by the global financial crises. Constructions came to halt and there were no money to either finish or deconstruct them. Nowadays these places are neglected and avoided by local residents and city municipalities. 100 CONSTRUCTION RUINS ON 100KM COASTLINE Main goal of the work is to investigate the potential of the unfinished and abandoned construction sites, pointing out a future perspective of these structures and the whole coastal area. The project is about introducing a strategy for a balance between natural landscape and dense urbanization. The project will introduce the area to the contemporary generation of travelers and locals. This new target group will bring more variety in the future developments but without considering mass tourism and mass commerce. The project is more about the real-life of the area. Additionally it has the concept of investing no new money by working with the minimal tools of intervention. The aim is to work with the ruins, natural appearance and decay. It will bring people together with nature and the human creation of concrete structures figuring out the question: How can a participatory design process integrates man, the abandoned and nature into a hybrid ruin construction for the future?

History of Tourism at the Costa del Sol from 1900 till 1950

Beginning of tourism

For an alternative, people saw the potential in the tourism sector knowing that Málaga has a wonderful benign climate and coastal situation. Advertising the region for tourists with its best potential, the climate: 320 sunny days 3000 hours of sun average 18.7° (13.8° winter, 24.4°summer)

National boost

The arrival of the railroad meant a boost for tourism. Narrow lane railroads linked Málaga with Fuengirola at the beginning of the 20th century. This allowed access to the cast of Sundays and Holidays especially for many Andalusians of the interior. These were the beginnings of the Beach Holidays.

International boost
