2016-17 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

2016-17 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

2

A

fter undoubtedly posting the best season in program history, the 2016-17 are certainly not in denial that they’ll have a tough act to follow. Last year’s club went 38-3 (setting an NCAA Div. II record for victories), claimed its second straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles, and came up just five points shy in the National Title Game against an undefeated opponent. With seven seniors – including three starters and an All-American – departed from that roster, head coach Ryan McCarthy has reloaded with another excellent recruiting class to complement five returning letterwinners and one returning freshman redshirt. “We definitely set the bar high last year – there’s no denying that,” said McCarthy, who has led UAA to a 67-5 record over the past two seasons and earned consecutive West Region Coach of the Year honors. “But with our two starters and other proven veterans, I feel confident that we have the talent and the kind of leadership that sets an example for our new players and instills our championship culture.” Leading the way are two 4th-year senior starters – Alysha Devine and Kiki Robertson – who have piled up multiple accolades throughout their careers. A local product from Wasilla, Devine was an honorable mention All-GNAC performer and the West Regional Championships MVP last year, averaging 8.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest. The 6-foot forward and team captain also shot 45 percent from long range and scored double figures in 15 of the final 23 games as a junior. Meanwhile, Robertson claimed her second straight GNAC Tournament MVP trophy and third straight Second Team All-GNAC award last year, helping the Seawolves lead the nation in steals per game for the third year in a row. The Honolulu native and 2015-16 GNAC Defensive Player of the Year is already UAA’s career assists leader (528) and enters November just four shy of the GNAC record. Robertson also begins 2016-17 as the NCAA Div. II active leader in assists and assists per game (5.4), and No. 2 in steals (273) and steals per game (2.8). The three additional returning letterwinners bring a combined four years of playing experience and each has benefitted from redshirting, led by junior forward Sierra Afoa. Coming off the bench in 69 of 70 games, the local Dimond High product has been a super sub the last two years, averaging 4.1 points and 4.1 rebounds in just 15 minutes per outing. Fellow former Alaska prep stars Hannah Wandersee (4.8 ppg, 2.7

rpg, .532 FG) – a 6-1 post from Kodiak – and Tara Thompson (3.5 ppg, .337 3FG) – a shooting guard from Dimond High – should be ready to increase their contributions as well. The final returnee from last year’s team is redshirt freshman point guard Yazmeen Goo, who was impressive in practice and could make a significant impact in her debut campaign. Six newcomers join the ‘Mayhem’ – the program’s mantra for its unique, fullcourt style – in 2016-17, including two players with NCAA Div. I experience. Senior transfer Autummn Williams comes to UAA directly from 20-win Div. I program Arkansas Little Rock, following a standout career at JC national-title program Trinity Valley (Texas) Community College. Originally from New York, the 5-10 forward was listed by ESPNW as the No. 38 JC recruit in the country in 2015. Junior forward Shelby Cloninger played

her freshman season at D-I Utah State in 2013-14 before returning to her home state to lead North Idaho College with 13.5 points per game last season. She will team up front with power forward Dominique Thomas, another 6-footer, who averaged 12.6 points and 7.6 rebounds as a First Team NJCAA All-Region XIV pick at Kilgore (Texas) College. In the backcourt, junior Kaitlyn Hurley is a sharp-shooting guard from Roy, Utah, who helped Snow College to 40 wins over the past two seasons as the program’s leading scorer. She will be complemented by fellow JC transfer Zhara Laster, who earned 2015-16 NWAC Northern Region Defensive Player of the Year honors, posting nine double-doubles and leading Peninsula (Wash.) College to its first-ever league title. Seattle native Kimijah King is the team’s lone true freshman, coming north after earning All-Metro honors as a senior at Lakeside High.

Head Coach RYAN McCARTHY

O

ne of the brightest coaching talents in the NCAA ranks, Ryan McCarthy begins his fifth year at the helm of the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball program in 2016-17, having already taken the Seawolves to unprecedented heights. An Anchorage native, McCarthy has led his hometown program to a 67-5 record over the past two campaigns, capturing two Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season and postseason tournament titles, ascending to No. 1 in the national poll for eight total weeks, and reaching the 2016 NCAA National Title Game. Following a 29-2 campaign in 201415, UAA recorded a 38-3 mark in 201516 to set a new NCAA Div. II standard for victories in a season – among five NCAA records broken by last year’s club. McCarthy repeated as the NCAA Div. II West Region Coach of the Year and was the 2014-15 GNAC Coach of the Year, piloting squads that have broken over 50 school records in a two-year span. Playing his program’s signature up-tempo ‘Mayhem’ style, the Seawolves led NCAA Div. II in steals per game for the third straight season in 2015-16, while coming just shy of pacing the nation in margin of victory for the second year in a row. The past two UAA teams have also earned top-10 national ranks in scoring offense, turnover margin and rebound margin, while producing two GNAC Newcomers of the Year (Megan Mullings & Keiahnna Engel), the 2014-15 GNAC Defensive Player of the Year and back-to-back GNAC Tournament MVP (Kiki Robertson), and the 2015-16 GNAC Player of the Year (Mullings, who was also tabbed as an All-American). Since taking the reins in 2012, McCarthy’s teams have improved both their overall (17, 19, 29, 38) and GNAC (11, 12, 17, 18) victory totals each year -- a figure that doesn’t even include a 67-61 exhibition road win over Pacific-12 Conference foe Utah in Nov. 2014.

In 2013-14, McCarthy’s Seawolves finished 19-9 overall and made the NCAA playoffs for the first time under his leadership. UAA led the nation with 14.3 steals per game and was the highest-scoring team in the GNAC at nearly 80 points per contest. Despite a shortened roster, McCarthy’s first Seawolf squad rallied for a seven-game win streak to close the 2012-13 regular season and a third-place tie in the final GNAC standings at 11-7. In four seasons under McCarthy, the Seawolves have produced nine 1st- or 2ndteam All-GNAC honorees, 13 Academic All-GNAC performers, and seen four players ascend to the professional ranks. Teamwise, UAA has posted victories over four NCAA Div. I teams, six NCAA Div. II nationally ranked teams, and perfect 8-0 marks against league rivals Seattle Pacific, Alaska Fairbanks and Western Oregon.

Prior to UAA, McCarthy spent five seasons at GNAC rival Northwest Nazarene from 2007-12. At NNU, he served as an assistant, interim head coach and associate head coach, helping the Crusaders to two NCAA Tournament berths and a .633 winning percentage during that stretch. After helping NNU to a 56-27 record as assistant coach from 2007-10, McCarthy stepped up as acting head coach in 2010-11 and led the Crusaders to a 14-13 record and a bid to the inaugural GNAC Tournament. In 2011-12, McCarthy was named associate head coach and helped pilot NNU to an 18-10 season. McCarthy played professionally for Tus Bramsche in Bramsche, Germany, in 200607, where he led the league in three-pointers and free throw percentage. He spent 2006 with the Central Oregon Hotshots of the International Basketball League, averaging 16 points, four assists and four rebounds per game. A 4-year starter and 3-year captain for the Crusaders from 2002-06, McCarthy was NNU’s Orrin Hills Male Athlete of the Year for 2005-06. He ranks third in program history with 256 treys over his career, setting the then-GNAC single-season record with 102 three pointers in 2005-06. Overall he posted 1,161 career points for the Crusaders. McCarthy graduated from NNU in 2006 with a B.S. in social science education. He and his wife Jenny have two young children, Donovan and Aurora.

nchorage native Shaina Afoa returns to the Seawolf coaching staff for her fifth season overall in 2016-17 and her second as the program’s top assistant. Since joining Ryan McCarthy’s staff, Afoa has helped the Seawolves to a 10324 overall record, three NCAA Tournamanet berths, and backto-back GNAC regular-season and tournament titles. In her first year as the lead assistant coach, UAA also captured the NCAA West Region title and earned its first-ever berth in the National Title Game. In addition to administrative and recruiting duties, Afoa has been a key to the development and success of UAA’s post players, working with such recent all-league standouts as Alysa Horn, KeKe Wright and All-American Megan Mullings. Afoa was a three-sport athlete at GNAC rival Central Washington from 2006-11, lettering four times in both basketball and track & field, plus once in volleyball. A three-year starter at center, she finished No. 2 on the Wildcats’ career list for blocks with 126, plus fourth in rebounds (599), sixth in games started (79) and 10th in field-goal percentage (.461). UAA ADMINISTRATION

2016-17 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CHANCELLOR

TOM CASE

T

om Case, Lt. Gen. USAF (Ret.), became chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. Upon completing his Air Force career, he was appointed dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), where he served nearly six years before becoming president and chief operating officer of the state-owned, independently operated Alaska Aerospace

Corporation. Since returning to UAA as Chancellor, Case has focused on helping students succeed in their college goals. In 2011, UAA became one of only 11 universities nationwide to open a VetSuccess program on campus. UAA opened a Veteran’s Resource Center in 2013 to support its growing military and veteran student population. With support from Chancellor funds, UAA established the INNOVATE awards in 2011 to provide an incentive for innovative research. Seawolf Holdings was approved in 2012, establishing a pathway toward the commercialization of UAA research. In February 2013, ZENSOR, LLC became the first startup company incorporated in Alaska based upon research by UAA faculty. A second startup incorporated in June 2013. Currently, UAA has 31 invention disclosures with 12 patents pending. Under Case’s leadership, UAA opened a new Health Sciences Building, the new Alaska Airlines Center, and received funding to complete a new Engineering and Industry Building, slated to open in 2015. Married to his wife Susan for 45 years, they have a daughter Donna, sonin-law Daniel, and three grandchildren. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Case received a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. He is a graduate of the National War College, the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, the Air War College, and Emory University’s Advanced Management Program. He is an active member of the community, having served on the boards of the Alaska World Affairs Council and World Trade Center Alaska, and is immediate past president of Commonwealth North. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

KEITH HACKETT

E

ntering his fourth year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2016-17, Keith Hackett has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA program for unprecedented success. All told during his tenure, the Seawolves’ D-II programs have qualified for NCAA postseason competition at a 90 percent rate, producing 69 All-Americans, five Academic All-Americans®, 14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles, plus NCAA top-3 finishes in men's cross country (2015) and women's basketball (2016 runner-up). Even more impressively, UAA student-athletes have continued their tradition of academic excellence under Hackett’s leadership, combining for better than a 3.15 overall grade-point average in each of his years at the helm. In the past three years, the Seawolves have also finished among the top programs in NCAA Div. II in the NACDA Learfield Directors’ Cup. In 201516, UAA finished No. 8 in the final standings out of 307 D-II schools nationally. Under Hackett’s leadership, the department has developed a strategic plan that lists the highest priorities for continued growth and development. These strategic priorities guide and direct many of the Seawolf Athletic Department’s decisions. Meanwhile, student-athlete success and the studentathlete experience are his highest priorities. Creating college graduates, honorable citizens and young people who are prepared to lead and succeed in life after they leave UAA are at the core of the department’s mission. A university and administrative management executive with 39 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners. In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement. Hackett has developed partnerships with industry leader Spectra to manage the Alaska Airlines Center and UAA’s ticketing operations; Learfield Sports – the industry leader in media rights and sponsorships; and Basketball Travelers, which assists UAA in developing the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Hackett has worked closely with corporate partners GCI and Alaska Airlines – and national TV partner CBS Sports Network – to bolster the vitality of UAA’s most visible event, the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Other priorities that Hackett has targeted include external relations and development, revenue generation, and a significant focus on the ‘Seawolf Fan Experience.’ Since his arrival, over $4 million has been raised for facility projects and direct support to Seawolf sports teams. Hackett came to the Seawolves after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive VP for Special Projects and Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive VP and Provost at St. Gregory’s from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 40 years and have two adult children, Katie and James, and six grandsons.

The Municipality of Anchorage A

laska’s most populous city is home to more than a few surprises. Aside from the human population of nearly 300,000, it is home to 1,500 moose and copious other wildlife. More than 50 glaciers stand in the nearby Chugach Mountains, one of the largest state parks in the nation. It’s the best mix of iconic Alaska and urban amenities. More than 135 miles of paved trails wind through the city, and salmon can be caught within the city limits. But Anchorage

also has a bustling downtown – complete with high-rises, nightlife and one of the nation’s fastest-growing culinary scenes. Anchorage is at the center of road, rail and air travel inside the state, making it a natural fit for visitors hoping to experience Alaska. Activities from the city range from bear viewing to glacier trekking, kayaking to gold panning. Pair adventure opportunities with Anchorage’s outstanding hotels, restaurants,

local breweries, and homegrown arts, and it’s a perfect place to explore no matter the season. Thanksgiving weekend is a special time for Anchorage. The State of Alaska A

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska also boasts 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage, and an estimated 100,000 glaciers. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Previously known as Mt. McKinley, the colossal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days.

Surrounded by an environment that is both urban and wild, UAA is a gateway to innovative thinking, learning and exploration in a changing, modern world. UAA is rooted in the Alaska communities it serves and offers exciting pathways in 200 major areas of study, all at a great value.

UAA’s student-athletes, the beating heart of #SeawolfNation, compete in 13 NCAA collegiate sports. At the Division I level, UAA fields a men’s ice hockey team and a women’s gymnastics team. Competing in Division II are men’s and women’s basketball, cross country running, skiing and indoor and outdoor track & field teams, as well as our women’s volleyball team. True student-athletes, our Seawolves maintained a 3.24 GPA last year across all teams, while producing seven conference titles, nine NCAA finishes, 28 All-Americans and placing No. 8 of 307 schools in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup rankings. In September 2014, Seawolf Athletics cut the ribbon on its new home, the Alaska Airlines Center, a state-of-the-art 196,000-square-foot sporting event, training, sports medicine, special event and performance venue that is shared by the Anchorage community. The AAC is the home for the GCI Great Alaska Shootout and has already played host to the NCAA Div. II West Regional Championships for women’s basketball and volleyball, and the MPSF Gymnastics Championships.
