THE

SEAWOLF

I

n the Seawolf, the University of Alaska Anchorage has one of the more unique mascots in the country. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977. The name Seawolf represents a mystical sea creature and, according to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

The UAA cross country program has es-

tablished itself as one of the most successful in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and the NCAA Div. II West Region, and the Seawolves return this season with GNAC titles and NCAA berths in reach. Coming off of a record-breaking 2008 campaign, the Seawolves will follow the lead of 20th-year head coach Michael Friess. Under his guidance, UAA has claimed three conference titles and seven runner-up finishes since joining the GNAC in 2001. UAA’s men’s and women’s squads have also qualified for NCAAs eight times, including sending both squads during the 2005 & 2008 seasons. Last year, UAA registered three All-Americans, six All-West Region awards and eight All-Conference honorees. The men’s team snagged its third GNAC title, while the women’s team finished in second for the fourth time. The men’s squad raced to a runner-up finish at the NCAA West Regional and the women’s team finished third. At NCAAs, both teams recorded program-best results, with the women team placing ninth and the men 11th. The 2009 edition of the Seawolves features 14 returners, including one All-American, three All-Region and five All-GNAC performers Leading the Seawolf pack on the men’s side will be the 2008 GNAC individual champion, junior Marko Cheseto (Kapenguria, Kenya). The lone returning All-American, Cheseto raced to a 37-second victory at the league championships, earning him the 2008 GNAC Cross Country Male Athlete of the Year. Cheseto completed his rookie season with a UAA program-best ninth-place finish at the NCAA meet. The Seawolves can expect great things from sophomore Alfred Kangogo (Eldoret, Kenya), a member of the NCAA team last year and an All-West Region and All-GNAC finisher. Rounding out an accomplished top three male returners is junior Paul Rottich (Kapsabet, Kenya), a regional and conference scorer last season who has three top-10 career finishes to his credit. On the women’s side, three-time All-Conference and two-time All-Region honoree Laura Carr (South Bend, Ind.) returns for her final season with the Seawolves. The only senior on the UAA squad this year, Carr will look to make her fourth trip to NCAAs after finishing 48th last season - third-best in Seawolf women’s history. Likely to be on Carr’s heels this season is junior Hallidie Wilt. Wilt, a native of Unalaska, was a member of the NCAA team last season, crossing the line as UAA’s third runner in 64th place. At the GNAC Championships, Wilt completed the race in eighth 3

place, earning her All-Conference honors. The Seawolves will look to sophomore Ruth Jeptoo (Kapcheno, Kenya), an All-Conference member from last season, who finished 74th at NCAAs and 18th at the West Regional. Wearing the Green and Gold for the first time will be 11 newcomers - seven women and four men. Among UAA’s top newcomers should be freshman Micah Chelimo (Kapkoi, Kenya) on the men’s side and Alaska athletes Kayla Teslow (Fr., Fairbanks/West Valley HS) and JJ Lende (So., Haines/transfer from Adams State) on the women’s side.

2008 REVIEW & RESULTS

2008 CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW

Alaska

Anchorage’s cross country teams completed the 2008 season with the men’s and the women’s squads both having numerous individual and team successes. The Seawolves came away with top-15 finishes in five of the six meets throughout the season. The men’s team produced two first places and two runner-up finishes, while the women recorded two first place finishes, a second and a third. UAA racked up the accolades from the GNAC’s, to the West Regional, to the National Championship. The season ended with a combined 17 all-team selections- Nationals (3), West Regional (6) and GNAC (8) - (Break down of names on page three.) Five Seawolves landed on the GNAC All-Academic team and sophomore Marko Cheseto was honored with the GNAC Cross Country Male Athlete of the Year. Head coach Michael Friess was selected as the GNAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career. For the second time in UAA history, the Seawolves sent both the men’s and women’s squads to the NCAA Div. II Championships in the same season. Both squads came away with the best national finishes in the history of UAA cross country program – 9th for the women, 11th for the men. The 2008 season topped the record board on the national’s all-time individual results. The Seawolves came away from the meet with the best two finishes on the men’s side, and the top woman finish of all time.

is the highest UAA has placed at the West Regional and a remarkable improvement from last season’s 11th place. The GNAC meet ended with a first place finish for the men’s team and runner-up for the women’s. The men’s conference win is their third title since joining the GNAC in 2001 and their fourth victory when including UAA’s participation in the Pac West Conference from 1994-2000. (The Seawolves won the PWC in 1997.) The women’s squad posted their fourth secondplace finish at the conference meet - the highest that they have placed. UAA’s men’s and women’s teams both remained in the national rankings through most the 2008 season. The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II top-25 gave the men’s team their highest ranking at No. 6. The men’s team was in the national rankings for ten straight weeks, with their lowest at No. 12. The women’s squad entered the polls on Week 3 at No. 15, and throughout the remaining weeks moved up to their best ranking at No. 11 and their lowest at No. 22. The men’s No. 6 ranking is the highest the squad has ever been polled, while the women’s No. 13 is the highest since the 2006 season when they reached No. 12.

Sophomore Mychaela Bailey

At the West Regional, the men’s second-place team result marks the tenth consecutive season the program has finished in the top-five and the highest that they have ever placed. The Seawolves have yet to win the West Region title. The women’s third-place at the West Regional is the third time that the Seawolves have finished third (2004, 2005). Third place

GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

S

tretching from Alaska to Oregon to Montana, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has quickly established itself as one of the most successful league in the NCAA Division II ranks. Founded in 2001 as a 10-team league, the GNAC currently features nine institutions – Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Montana State Billings, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington.

In the last two years alone, the GNAC has produced one national team title (SPU women’s soccer, 2009), three national runner-up finishes, and three NCAA Final 4 placings (all by the Seawolf basketball teams). UAA sponsors seven of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

Dr. Steve Cobb

Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In nine seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic

department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. The 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns were two of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s skiing, and men’s track & field. With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of the new gym floor and the construction of the new All-American/Academic All-American honors wall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Classic hockey and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage. 16

MUNICIPALITY OF

ANCHORAGE W

ith city boudaries that stretch to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 275,000 people are lucky to call Anchorage home. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an international air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Almost 300 flights arrive daily at Anchorage International Airport. Anchorage is a recreational paradise as well, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of

lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six scenic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, Chugach is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is located in Alaska’s so-called banana belt. Anchorage’s climate resembles that of San Francisco in the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 20

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes,, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. The 49th State celerated iis home to Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Mt. McKinley, located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, is over 200 miles north of Anchorage and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wildlife viewing and colorful wilderness expanses.

degrees). Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage’s comfortable climate. The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 Moose, which are often seen on UAA’s campus throughout the year. In addition, black bears, grizzliess, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, Dall sheep and bald eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes here. Salmon fishing is more than a pastime to Anchorage residents. Red and King Salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.
