SEAWOLF

n the Seawolf, the University of Alaska Anchorage has one of the more unique mascots in the country. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977. The name Seawolf represents a mystical sea creature and, according to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW

2012 ALASKA ANCHORAGE CROSS COUNTRY

2

T

his year’s Seawolves will have big shoes to fill as they look to top one of the most successful seasons in program history. UAA started with an unprecedented 12 team victories – including a sweep of the NCAA Div. II West Regional and Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships – before ending with a sixth-place result on the women’s side and a program-high-tying eighth place on the men’s side at the NCAA Div. II Championships. Returning to the Green & Gold from that historic squad are three All-Americans, nine All-Region, six All-Conference and the West Region and GNAC Male Athlete of the Year, senior Micah Chelimo. A local of Kapkoi, Kenya, Chelimo paced the Seawolves in five races, including with a team-high 15th place at the NCAAs in November. Chelimo also became just the second Seawolf male to collect an individual title at the West Region meet. Chelimo will be joined by 2008 AllAmerican Jake Parisien (Palmer HS), who returns for his senior campaign, as well as senior Alfred Kangogo (Eldoret, Kenya), who will aim for his first AllAmerica honor in cross country. Also donning the Seawolf banner from last year’s NCAA squad are sophomores Dylan Anthony and Isaac Kangogo. “We have a good group of returners on the men’s side,” said 23rd-year head coach Michael Friess. “Our success will depend on our four through seven runners this season.” One of the men’s competitions will be the team training right beside them in the UAA women’s squad. Returning five of the seven student-athletes from the NCAA Championships a year ago, the Seawolves will likely be led by AllAmericans Miriam Kipng’eno and Alaska native Ivy O’Guinn. A senior from Eldoret, Kenya, Kipng’eno finished 32nd at Nationals with O’Guinn on her heels in 33rd. Both will be challenged by juniors Susan Tanui (Eldoret, Kenya), who is coming off a successful season on the track, and Susan Bick (Bartlett HS). “The women’s team has a strong group of returners and a few solid newcomers that will make us competitive,” said Friess, “We have had a strong team

Top left: Susan Tanui. Top right: Alfred Kangogo. Bottom left: Micah Chelimo. Bottom right: Susan Bick.

these past few years, so in order for us to maintain our success we will have to have some of our freshmen and sophomores contribute.” Expecting to handle that task are freshmen Jaymi Bethea and Sarah Freistone on the women’s side and Dominik Notz for the men’s squad. Bethea, the 2010 State champion in cross country, hails from Kodiak, while Freistone led the Lynx at Dimond High for two years. An import from Dettingen, Germany, Notz comes to UAA after a successful stretch with the German Junior National Team. The Seawolves, who combined return 15 letterwinners, will commence the 2012 slate with a pair of meets in Hawaii. UAA will

head to the 50th State for the Hawaii Pacific Invitational on Sept. 1 and the Hawaii Big Wave Invitational on Sept. 8 – both won by the Seawolves last season. From there, they will take on GNAC foes at the Western Washington Classic on Oct. 6, before looking to defend their titles at the league championships on Oct. 20 in Monmouth, Ore. The season will conclude with the NCAA Div. II West Regional Championships on Nov. 3 and the NCAA Div. II Championships on Nov. 17 in Joplin, Mo. “We will give it our very best to defend our titles,” said Friess. “The GNAC and West Region is full of very good teams, but if we do our part we will be competitive.”

2012 ALASKA ANCHORAGE CROSS COUNTRY HEAD COACH MICHAEL FRIESS

MICHAEL FRIESS HEAD COACH 23rd SEASON

One of the nation’s most respected track & field mentors, Michael Friess is in his 23rd season as head coach of the cross country and track & field programs at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2012-13. Since joining the GNAC in 2001, UAA’s cross country teams have combined for 19 top-three team finishes at the conference meet, eight league titles, 16 All-Americans, 58 all-conference certificates and six individual conference titles. Currently, the women’s team has posted back-to-back titles in 2009, 2010 and 2011, while the men’s team has registered back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011. The Seawolves have been no stranger to the NCAA Championships under Friess’ guidance, having qualified a team for the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships 14 times overall, including sending both the men’s and women’s squads in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. In eight seasons of full institutional sponsorship, the Seawolf track & field teams have quickly left their mark on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference under Friess, earning two individual NCAA titles and three runner-up finishes, 31 All-America awards, 51 individual conference titles, 89 all-conference honorees, and 13 league records. In less than a decade as a full-fledged program, Friess has piloted the track & field squads to success on a national level, qualifying 56 athletes for NCAAs since 2001. A program-record 10 Seawolves competed at the Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2009 and 2011. In 2011, both squad produced a program-best team result with the men breaking the top ten in 9th and the women tying for 11th. Friess has earned 12 conference coach-of-the-year accolades in cross country, including three straight women’s coach-of-the-year honors from 2003-05. In 2011 and 2010, Friess swept both the men’s and women’s GNAC Coach of the Year honors. He earned his first West Region honor in the spring of 2009 for the men’s track & field team, before picking up his first women’s cross country honor in the fall of the same year. Friess went on to sweep the West Region in 2010 and 2011, claiming both the men’s and women’s Coach of the Year accolades. Athletes have excelled in the classroom as well under Friess, earning 142 academic all-conference accolades over the last 11 seasons and 56 all-academic honors since 2005-06. Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams have combined for 12 U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association AllAcademic Team recognitions since 2005, while both track & field teams have made the All-Academic Team each year since 2009. Friess graduated from Linfield (Ore.) College with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 1985 and was an NAIA All-American distance runner for the Wildcats. He earned a master’s degree in sport biomechanics from the University of Oregon in 1986. A graduate of Anchorage’s Dimond High, Friess remains active in the local running community as a competitor, coach and organizer. Some of the events Friess organizes include the Mayor’s Marathon & Half-Marathon and the Crow Pass Crossing. A USA Track & Field Level II coach, Friess is also a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and is certified by ACSM as an exercise test technologist and exercise specialist.

2012 ALASKA ANCHORAGE CROSS COUNTRY

Chancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

T

om Case assumed the chancellorship of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. A retired 3-star Air Force Lt. General, Case has spent more than 12 years in Alaska, including two Air Force tours of duty, five years as dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), and three years as president and chief operating officer of a state-owned, independently operated Aerospace corporation. The 1969 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy began his 33-year military career flying in Vietnam. Later, he served at the Pentagon, was selected as the first Air Force Chief of Staff Chair on the faculty of the National War College, and eventually went on to command two fighter wings, a numbered air force and Alaskan Command. He also served as deputy commander and chief of staff for the nation’s two largest geographic joint combatant commands. After retiring from the Air Force, Case returned to higher education as dean of CBPP at UAA. During his tenure, CBPP added several new certificate and degree programs, including a graduate certificate in Global Logistics, and played an instrumental role in the formation of CBPP’s Experimental Economics Laboratory.

DR. STEVE COBB

Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

n 12 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed five of the most memorable athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by four Elite Eight appearances for Seawolf basketball teams and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country (six times), skiing (five times), and men’s & women’s track & field (four times). In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. In the 2011-12 athletic campaign, the Seawolves placed a program-record 16th in NCAA Div. II standings in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which measures nearly 300 D-II programs nationwide on overall athletic success. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, construction has also begun on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus. He has also overseen major upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in 2010. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and SpringHill Suites Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

ACADEMICS The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS

Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as

members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and men’s and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 181 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 16 individual national champions since 1991. In its 35th year of NCAA competition, UAA Athletics posted its most impressive performance yet in 2011-12. The Seawolves qualified teams or individuals from 10 of 11 sports for NCAA competition, including top-10 national team finishes by women’s basketball, both men’s and women’s cross country, skiing and men’s track & field. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 15 of the last 18 years.
