2017 Seattle Study Club® Symposium

BIG BANG THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE The Big Bang theory maintains that billions of years ago there was a sudden expansion of our universe from its tiny origin to something astronomical in scope; in our case, from nothingness to a world filled with the unique elements from which we evolved. This not only signifies the beginning of life as we know it, but also connotes the dawn of deep questioning and experimentation, an insatiable thirst for knowledge and creativity and an interminable spirit of adventure. Our Symposium 2017 program has been informed and inspired by this spirit of adventure. By shedding the comfort of convention and greatly expanding the world of learning choices, we seek to create our very own Big Bang this coming January in Florida. Twenty of dentistry’s preeminent lecturers and some amazing keynoters will enlighten us from the podium, and we will also be rolling up our sleeves to participate in a variety of restorative and surgical hands-on workshops. These small, intensive training sessions are a first for the Seattle Study Club®, and promise to add a fresh and exciting dimension to the whirlwind that is Symposium. Also new to the Symposium experience in 2017 will be the Technology Carnival, where we will investigate the latest innovations, participate in live demonstrations and pose our most challenging questions to the dental industry technology experts in attendance. Four days of Symposium will flash before our eyes as quickly as that momentary event that led to our existence—the Big Bang. And while this may be a risky undertaking, with the spirit of adventure as our guide, we cannot fail in our quest to explore and understand the ever-expanding universe of dental techniques and technologies.

HOMO EVOLUTIS (LECTURE, UP TO 1.0 HOUR) BASIC SCIENCE, AGD SUBJECT CODE: 010 There have been at least 25 prototype humans. We are but one more model, and there is no evidence evolution has stopped. Mr. Enriquez will take the audience into a world where humans increasingly shape their environment, themselves and other species. It is a world where bodies harbor 100 times more microbial cells than human cells, a place where a gene cocktail may allow many more to climb an 8,000 meter peak without oxygen and where—given the right drug—one could have a 77 percent chance of becoming a centenarian. By the end of this keynote session, attendees will see a broad, and sometimes scary, map of life sciences driven change. Not just the human body but also core religious, government and social structures will be altered as humankind makes the transition to a new species, Homo evolutis, which directly and deliberately controls its own evolution and that of many other species.

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, ATTENDEES SHOULD BE ABLE TO: •

Discover how humanity is on the verge of becoming a new and utterly unique species— Homo evolutis.

Understand how more aspects of the human experience and life will be capable of scientific manipulation.

Learn that this great leap will be made possible through the conflux of DNA manipulation, therapy, tissue generation and robotics.

NEW PERSPECTIVE ON OCCLUSION AND TMD (LECTURE, UP TO 1.0 HOUR) TM DISORDERS, AGD SUBJECT CODE: 182 Today clinicians can offer predictable treatment outcomes for many of the occlusal and TM joint problems commonly faced by their patients. The first step in predictable treatment outcomes is specifically diagnosing the condition of the anatomy being treated. By expanding their vision from the teeth to include the TM joints, dentists can finally answer why some patients have malocclusions or pain and why some have both. As both a specialist and a restorative dentist, the key to success in many cases is managing the forces generated both at the tooth level and at the TM joint level. Some new perspectives on occlusion and TMD will add to proven concepts used on a daily basis and help solve many of the problems that have confused the dental profession for years. These perspectives will increase predictability

when treatment planning occlusal therapies, restorative dentistry, implant dentistry, orthodontics, orthognathic surgery and airway dentistry.

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, ATTENDEES SHOULD BE ABLE TO: •

Develop a simple and accurate clinical protocol for recognizing when the occlusion and TM joints are stable enough to begin treatment.

Determine when additional diagnostic information is necessary to assess the risk factors in treatment planning.

Create a decision tree that outlines the three options for treatment planning occlusal/ TMD patients.

SAMEER BHASIN

THE SCIENCE OF CASE ACCEPTANCE (LECTURE, UP TO 2.0 HOURS) PRACTICE MANAGEMENT AND HUMAN RELATIONS, AGD SUBJECT CODE: 550

6

As the landscape of private practice continues to evolve, a clinician’s ability to help a patient understand the true value of comprehensive treatment becomes even more critical. In addition, while all dentists understand the importance of marketing and generating new patients for the health of their practices, many often fail to realize that the patient sitting in their chair is most likely to accept comprehensive treatment if the picture is painted correctly for them. In order to do this, the clinician must grasp the true barriers to comprehensive care in that patient’s decision-making process. During this interactive workshop, attendees will look at the findings of a recent study, Patients’ Path to Dental Care Purchases, and utilize it as the basis for developing more current methodologies to help their patients understand and commit to the care they need. Utilizing numbers

from one’s own practice, various information delivery techniques will be examined. These techniques will account for generational differences, as well as differences in demographics, financials, buying behaviors and patient objections.

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, ATTENDEES SHOULD BE ABLE TO: •

Recognize that everything they do clinically is evidence based and their individual approach to educating their patients must also be rooted in science and statistics.

Create the necessary tools to increase real case acceptance in their practices.

DOUG THOMPSON, DDS

PERIODONTAL DISEASE AND MODERN MEDICINE—AN OPPORTUNITY FOR HEALTHIER PATIENTS (LECTURE, UP TO .5 HOUR) MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TOPICS, AGD SUBJECT CODE: 149 There is a new opportunity in every restorative dental practice revolving around periodontal medicine. As vascular disease continues to be redefined as an inflammatory disease, and not a cholesterol disease, reducing total body inflammation is a goal of treatment. Emerging science in vascular disease, heart attack and stroke prevention strategies will be reinforced. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease mainly expressed through the relationship between bacteria and host susceptibility. Evaluating the microbial profile of every active periodontal infection can provide valuable treatment and maintenance information. This approach reveals opportunities to adjust current traditional periodontal management protocols for improved outcomes. This knowledge allows integration of dental and medical practices to take an integrative oral medicine approach. In addition to repairing the teeth, adding a wellness approach to the practice can produce healthier patients, practices and teams.

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, ATTENDEES SHOULD BE ABLE TO: •

Understand how salivary and molecular diagnostics can assist in periodontal disease management.

Identify how inflammation generated from the oral cavity is associated with the vascular disease process.

Realize that augmenting or rebranding a traditional reparative/restorative dental practice is possible through awareness about how oral health issues contribute to total body wellness.

CAN WE GROW ORGANS INSTEAD OF TRANSPLANTING THEM? (LECTURE, UP TO 1.0 HOUR) ANATOMY, AGD SUBJECT CODE: 012 UPON COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, ATTENDEES SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

There is a major health crisis today. In the last decade, the number of patients requiring an organ has doubled while the actual number of transplants has barely gone up. Truth is, there are not enough organs to go around and people are dying every day. With a focus on growing new human cells, tissues and organs, Dr. Atala, Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and his team engineered the first lab-grown organ to be implanted into a human— and have since engineered over 30 tissues and whole organs. During this mind-boggling keynote, he will demonstrate an early-stage experiment that could someday solve the organ-donor problem. He will also share how regenerative medicine will not just help manage disease but will also improve lives and possibly even provide a cure.

Understand how regenerative medicine can offer new treatments for conditions previously considered incurable.

Learn about a three-dimensional printer that is being used to print living tissue structures to replace injured or diseased tissue in patients.

DENTOALVEOLAR EXTRUSION—THE MOST DIFFICULT PATIENT IN DENTISTRY (LECTURE, UP TO .75 HOUR) DENTOALVEOLAR SURGERY, AGD SUBJECT CODE: 317 As patients become more discriminating, dentists must become better diagnosticians as well as clinicians. The most difficult patients to treat in the adult restorative practice are wear patients. As the teeth wear, they commonly move into positions that make restorative dentistry difficult and sometimes impossible. This condition is termed dentoalveolar extrusion (DAE). The understanding of DAE has completely revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment planning of this difficult subset of patients. The DAE wear patient commonly requires an interdisciplinary treatment approach to achieve an

aesthetic and functional result. This lecture will discuss the diagnosis of DAE and the nine treatment options for treating DAE. Dr. Robbins will also review the CORE diagnosis principles using case studies to illustrate treatment options.

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, ATTENDEES SHOULD BE ABLE TO: •

This goes hand-in-hand with ongoing education among the whole team to ensure consistency and predictability. Clear guidelines are the best path to achieving an optimal smile for patients. The significance of the details, such as facial headlines, head position, skeletal relations as well as musculature, should be considered. This lecture will provide an in-depth look into the guidelines for seeking natural restoration of dental aesthetics and function. Dr. Marquardt will also discuss reasons why patients lose their vertical dimension, chip their teeth and worry about their discomfort when

chewing and orthopedic pains. He will demonstrate how to easily treat normal and complex cases with functional deficits by respecting some biologic rules.

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, ATTENDEES SHOULD BE ABLE TO: •

Analyze the patient and convey the real situation to the technician.

Understand why functional pretreatments are especially important in rehabilitations with implants and full ceramics.

Learn how humanity is on the verge of becoming a new and utterly unique species— Homo evolutis.

Understand how more aspects of the human experience and life will be capable of scientific manipulation.

Decisions made today will likely change over time as procedures become mainstream. How the present generation is regarded by future societies does not just depend on finding the right answers for today—societal rules and norms change. So, who should teach ethics today? This will be a fast moving interactive session. Discussion format will be similar to that of a Harvard Business School case.

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, ATTENDEES SHOULD BE ABLE TO: •

Continue a dialogue about the ethical implications of biotechnological advances and the positive effects such research can have on human life.

Discuss the ability to change the most basic life code of bacteria, plants, animals and humans.

FRANCINE EDWARDS, PHD

LOVING FROM THE INSIDE OUT (LECTURE, UP TO 1.5 HOURS) SELF-IMPROVEMENT, AGD SUBJECT CODE: 770 In this thought-provoking presentation, Prof. Edwards addresses how individuals can make a difference in a society filled with racial, ethnic, gender, sexual and religious tensions. She argues that people need to change the way they think about human beings and focus on who people are on the inside, and not just who they are on the outside. Everyone has an amazing narrative and a story worth sharing, worth listening to and worth asking questions about. She suggests that everyone should be swift to love, slow to judge and, when able, quick to de-escalate a situation.

26

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, ATTENDEES SHOULD BE ABLE TO: •

Work toward loving unconditionally in times of stress.

Understand that stopping themselves from judging others is the first step toward harmony and healing.

Use the tools of sharing, listening and asking questions to learn to know people from the inside out.

JERRI EDWARDS, PHD

THE ACTIVE STUDY—COGNITIVE TRAINING REDUCES INCIDENT DEMENTIA (LECTURE & PARTICIPATIVE, UP TO 2.0 HOURS) SELF-IMPROVEMENT, AGD SUBJECT CODE: 770 Research suggests that as people age they will need more than crossword puzzles or an active social life to keep dementia at bay. Although this memory-robbing disease mainly affects older people, it is not a normal part of aging and—with over 47.5 million dementia cases (worldwide) and 7.7 million new cases a year—one has to ask if brain training can really prevent dementia. During this session, Dr. Edwards will share her research on how cognitive abilities can be maintained and enhanced with advancing age and how computerized cognitive training not only improves cognitive function, but also longitudinally enhances the everyday functional abilities of older adults. She will describe normal age-related cognitive decline and ways to prevent cognitive impairment and dementia. She will demonstrate the brain-training program studied in her research, the Brain HQ Double Decision

exercise, which has been shown to improve cognitive and everyday functional abilities across 18 different randomized clinical trials in more than 50 published papers. She will conclude the session with further demonstrations of other Brain HQ exercises and time for the audience to participate in their own online cognitive training session followed by audience Q & A.

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, ATTENDEES SHOULD BE ABLE TO: •

Discuss how cognitive interventions (aka, brain training) help older adults delay or avoid functional difficulties.

Realize that specific forms and doses of cognitive training can delay the onset of dementia.

Many of them are only finding dead-end roads and feeling more and more trapped. During this valuable session, Mr. Behrendt will encourage attendees to see the one thing that can be the biggest bang for their future and how to use it on the path that lies ahead.

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, ATTENDEES SHOULD BE ABLE TO: •

Realize what many are calling the single most important asset to their practice and life.

Follow a framework that they can use time and time again to make very big decisions that have predictable outcomes.

Grasp what many dentists have done to completely change their confidence and the trajectory of their lives.

Learn the single tool—when used wisely—that could change the entire course of their future.

If you’ve read a newspaper or visited a medical doctor recently, you may have received conflicting information about diagnostic testing for prostate cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, etc. The controversy surrounding the use of the PSA test is just one example. Is it a man’s best chance of discovering he has prostate cancer before it has metastasized, or is it an entrance to a maze of over-diagnosis and unnecessary treatment? During this panel discussion of current issues in diagnostic testing for both men and women, medical doctors will explain which tests are absolutely necessary regardless whether your doctor, your insurance company or the government tells you they are not.
