appy Anniversary! Anniversaries are an occasion to acknowledge the past and behold the passage of time. While a couples’ first wedding anniversary is traditionally celebrated with paper, we celebrate our magazine’s anniversary with paper each year and this year, we are celebrating our 13th. In preparing for our annual Anniversary issue, we sought to highlight and celebrate the anniversaries of local businesses. For some, our readers have grown to know these businesses for generations and others are relatively new, but each one strives to maintain a vibrancy that helps to ensure future anniversaries. In this issue, we take you to the San Ysidro Ranch. This destination has provided a beautiful and restful getaway for years and it is where John F. Kennedy and Jackie celebrated their honeymoon. We introduce two new collections from our cover artist, Harrison Howard, one depicts garden themes and the other subjects for children. The new collections add to his ever changing works that will soon include interiors. We also bring you an ongoing gardening experiment that creates the perfect backyard retreat and to a home where a couple takes a fresh approach to traditional style with trend and texture. Much of Harrison's professional career has been devoted to mural work in private houses, and has included screens, panels, easel paintings, and watercolors. Primarily, his work has focused on decorative themes including chinoiseries, architectural subjects, and scenics, often with bird, animal, or floral motifs. Harrison started his career at the age of nineteen with a one-man exhibit at the upstairs gallery of Ross Thiele & Son Interiors in La Jolla, California, where he has lived for many years. All but one of the twenty four available watercolors were sold. Since that time, Harrison has worked primarily as a freelance artist. Today, the artist focuses on smaller paintings, and produces limited edition giclee prints as well. Clients have included: Royal Saudi Embassy Residence, McLean, VA. I have done a lot of things in my life. Played pro football. Won a Super Bowl. Done a TV show. And now ESPN radio. But here’s one thing I never thought I’d ever do: work out next to a 68-year-old grandmother. Her name is Sonja Nelson-Stough, and she is in amazing shape. She and I both work out at 20 Minutes to Fitness, a place that provides a medically based form of fitness training that takes just 20 minutes a week. But before you start thinking I have joined some sort of geriatric fitness club, let me add this: In all my years in the NFL,
Okay, I may lift a few pounds more than Sonja and most of the other folks here. But muscle failure is muscle failure. As medical research has proven again and again, achieving it is the first step to toward growing stronger and healthier – no matter what your age or physical condition. The truth is, the 20 Minute to Fitness workout can be fine-tuned for people of any fitness level – from overweight kids, to elite high school athletes, to stay-at-home moms, to timestarved professionals, to 80-year-old grandmas, to former pro athletes like me.
I never had a strength-training regimen as tough, or as effective, as this one. Don’t believe it? You can watch I’ll explain. When I played for the Rams, strength training was a numbers game. We were required to lift a certain amount of weight, a certain number of reps, three times a week. I was spending nine hours a week in a gym, building muscle, but damaging my joints. But at 20 Minutes to Fitness, the medical approach is completely different. Here, I work out on special physical therapy equipment. Everything we do is in ultra slow motion. My personal coach doesn’t really care how many reps I do, or even how much weight I’m lifting. All she is concerned about is that I achieve muscle failure – that I get to the point where I can’t lift another ounce.

or most people, blind dates end with half-hugs and awkward offers for a second date; however, every now and then, two lucky people find themselves falling in love over such a chance meeting, set up by a suddenly more valuable friend. For Liesl and Chris, the latter was very true. On August 6, 2007 when the two met for dinner at Navy Yard Bistro, a restaurant in Boston located right on the harbor, Liesl recalls knowing immediately that there was something special saying, “We just hit it off so fast, there was nothing we couldn’t talk about and nothing we wouldn’t go out and do.” So after a funfilled first date of great conversation, hopping to different locales around the city, and the absence of the dreaded half-hug goodbye, the two began dating. At the time the bride resided in Boston, while Chris was in town for business, so he began visiting the girl who would two years later become his fiancée on weekends. The groom would plan fun activities and adventures; something the bride appreciated but remembers that she “knew I was going to marry him on the second date.” When the couple’s long distance courtship became even more serious, the bride moved back to Saint Louis, and it wasn’t before long that the groom surprised her with a trip back to Boston for Fourth of July weekend where he’d made reservations at the scene of their first date, Navy Yard Bistro. While waiting for their table, the couple 24

walked out on the pier by the water, and the groom, in traditional style, got down on one knee and proposed. What followed was a whirlwind trip to the bride’s family’s summer home in Westport, Massachusetts where the two celebrated their engagement with family. They were even announced to a dining room full of people at the bride’s country club, where the two were cajoled by the crowd to dance to, “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”, a song that would also serve as the couple’s first dance as husband and wife. Once the couple and family returned home, wedding planning began, a feat primarily undertaken by the bride’s mother Christy, who the bride says, “Is the best party planner.” The mother daughter team credits much of their success to Jane Winter and Tom Moore of Wildflowers, who the mother of the bride remembers, “helped with everything from the flowers to the table linens and lighting choices,” which helped make the reception an unforgettable night. Also contributing to the spirit of the celebratory evening was the 18-piece band, the Tommy Money Orchestra, who played classics that the bride loved because it captured the couples, “old fashioned and romantic,” sensibilities. From an unexpectedly fantastic first date, to a wildly romantic wedding day, the newlyweds celebrated their matrimony among friends and family from all over the country, including a best man who flew in from Afghanistan just in time for the big day!

or two long time friends, admitting their feelings for one another was the first step down the aisle. The newlyweds, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Anne Kratzer and Travis Wolfner Dum first met at Our Lady of Pillar, where the bride, as her sister jokingly toasted at the reception, held at Old Warson Country Club, was in the midst of her lifelong struggle for the perfect hairwhich it should be noted fell short when her father fashioned her locks for her first day of preschool causing the precocious blonde to exclaim, "you expect me to go in there like this?" So with a well-developed personality, and a clear sense of self, the young bride, grew up and rekindled her friendship with Travis in high school after going their separate ways during middle school. Quickly becoming close, the two didn't date until their senior year at college, Travis at Indiana University and the bride at DePaul University. The bride recalls how, "when we decided to tell each other we liked one another, I think we both knew it meant for a lifetime," but unlike most life-altering decisions, this one was, "pretty easy for both of us- we just knew everything there was to know about each other." Following a romantic proposal in true St. Louis fashion, on a row boat at the Boathouse, an activity that coincidentally both St. Louisans had never before tried, the newly engaged couple celebrated their engagement with dinner on the rooftop at Vin de Set. What

came next was a series of decisions that the bride vowed not to stress over- deciding instead to, "keep things simple and enjoyable." That is exactly what she did, and although it's hard to imagine that such a flawlessly elegant celebration was planned by the bride, with the help of a team including her mother and sister, whose advice and creativity she credits for making her wedding day one free of stress, she had fun, explaining, "If I knew it was 'me'. I went with it." What resulted, was a wedding that truly reflected the couple's personalities, from the bridesmaids' Lilly Pulitzer dresses, the dessert and candy table which displayed "Dum Dums" and other assorted treats, to the groom's favorite- vodka gimlets with fresh lime juice, the reception was abound with intimate details. That is after all the night the couple wanted, "we really wanted the night to be about having everyone we love in one room to share the special night," and its this selfless quality that groomsmen, and former roommate of the bride, James Stroble says makes the newlyweds so special. He credits the two for, "making our tight knit group of friends feel like a family," and having the uncanny ability to bring, and keep people together. The close friends, surrounded by their loved ones, celebrated the matrimony that had been in the works since childhood with dancing and an evening that the bride says was, "the most spectacular of my life!"

THE LEGEND, THE MYTH, THE LURE OF
SAN YSIDRO RANCH

hen asked to name my favorite travel destination (and it happens often), I always answer San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California. Why? they ask. Well, there’s the ocean, the mountains, the breathtaking views, country gardens, a 5,000 bottle wine cellar, forty suites and cottages each with its own private entrance and crackling fireplace, king-sized beds swathed in luxury linens and canopied with white gauze, flowers at every turn emanating delicious fragrances and so much more. I’m in good company here. This hospitality haven has been sought out for its service and privacy by innumerable famous guests: Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, Winston Churchill, Somerset Maugham and Sinclair Lewis to name a few. John and Jacqueline Kennedy honeymooned here. Bobby and Ethel anniversaried here. Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier and, more recently, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin were married in this idyllic setting. Yes, it’s romantic and Forbes named it The Best Hotel in America in 2009. In spite of all these attributes, it’s the intangible qualities that captivate. The French have a saying for this: the je ne sais quoi. Because it’s the best, it’s pricey and Americans have a saying for this: if you have to ask, you can’t afford it. 44

The ranch is awash in nostalgia and history. Part of a land title by the King of Spain in 1769, it has served as a way station for Franciscan monks in the late 1700s, a citrus ranch in the next century and in the early 1900s was transformed into a hotel for celebrities by actor Ronald Coleman. Saint Isidore (San Ysidro in Spanish) was born into poverty in Madrid in 1070. Working as a farm laborer, he spent much of his time caring for the sick and needy. Legend has it that the Lord sent an angel to help him plow the fields and henceforth, he has been depicted as the patron saint of farmers, always surrounded by a plow, oxen and an angel. His statue sits beneath a jasmine arbor, watching over all who enter. St. Louisans, the Firmin V. Desloges, were one of only two families owning a home in the early '40s on the ranch, the other being the Hollywood actor, Robert Young. Their granddaughter, Lolly Desloge Hogan, recalls riding horses along the beach and having avocado fights with her brother in the orchards. Chef John Trotta has fresh vegetables and herbs grown on site at his disposal and uses them with flair. The Stonehouse Restaurant is housed in the original sandstone citrus packing house and is the more formal of the two. I could be perfectly content with a glass of wine from their outstanding vintage collection and their bread basket. All dark and creamy breads made in-house and a crispy cracker kind of paper thin flatbread that isn’t flat with nuggets of seeds and spices and herbs. All needing no butter or olive oil to melt in your mouth…and, for me, a butter freak, that’s saying something! Of course, if I stopped there, I’d be missing their famous tortilla soup, delectable ribs, mac
‘n cheese and Meyer lemon meringue pie. Plow & Angel, with Saint Isadore adorning the mantel, has a more casual feel. No reservations accepted here. Locals love to dine cozied up to the fireplace or on the ocean view deck under the Southern California stars. Guests of the feline and canine category are just as welcome as the Hollywood variety. At the Hacienda, a separate dog registry sits next to the human list on the entry desk for paw sign-ins. Amenities include Beanie Baby chewy toys, 8 oz. sirloin burgers, Scottish salmon filets and a masseuse for slow, gentle massages to soothe away fears and increase circulation. No kidding.
Bently, the ranch cat, will greet you upon arrival and you’ll never want to leave. I guarantee you that the next time someone asks what your favorite travel destination is, you too will answer San Ysidro Ranch. ❖

ay Alvis was happy with the peach and ivy green tones that builder Mark Vickroy used on the first floor rooms of the new Town & Country home that she and her husband Fred purchased several years ago. At a friend’s suggestion, the couple put their furniture in the foyer when they moved in, then “shopped” from the foyer to distribute the pieces, including everything from antiques to Baker to Henredon furnishings, throughout the house. And suddenly some of the furniture had a brand new look. And Kay was just getting started. She needed drapes for her dining room and teamed with designer Teddy Karl whose full-service design shop, The Great Cover-Up, soon became the starting point for their sketches, swatches and shopping. Re-upholstering pieces and purchasing new ones, Alvis worked methodically with Karl from room to room, very involved in the design process, very focused on finishing. “She knew what she liked and didn’t like,” Karl said. “And she didn’t want what everyone else had.” “He got me going on fabrics,” Kay said. “He would select fabrics that he thought would work and then I would choose. When you reupholster [a good piece], it

The chairs were already peach, leading the room’s color theme. The drapes are a Scalamandre fabric. The mirror, the glass lamps and crystal chandelier and even the tabletop all add shine; the white painted beams, texture and interest.
comes back like new.” Sometimes she fell in love with a fabric and held onto it until the right piece came along, as with the bench in the foyer. Kay had only one caveat regarding the great room: It could not look like a hotel. She wanted conversation areas, comfort, and a homey feel. Karl put the grand piano on an angle, and floated sitting areas in the middle of the room. The Bob Collins chintz bouquet on the sofas came first and all the other colors came out of it. And she wanted inclusion of her antiques. “I love antiques. You get one more scratch, and it doesn’t matter.” She also loves porcelain and collecting plates and uses them throughout the first floor rooms as delightful and usable accents. The drapes were originally to be white, but Karl popped them in peach at the second story level to exaggerate the height of the room, noting that there was already enough fabric and color at the floor level. The biggest challenge, Karl noted, was working with the color palette. “Kay’s colors were not run of the mill.” The corals, salmons and greens that she favors are coming back, Karl said, but at the time they began the projects, it seemed every perfect fabric they found had been discontinued. “The greens we’re seeing today are apple and chartreuse – the yellow greens - while the ones we were working with were light hunter and ivy, and they have bluer tones. We were just ahead of the curve!” he said. 72

Each room was transformed, touched by fabric for color and texture, and they finished with the foyer. But “Kay always has little something to do next,” added Karl. And that’s one of the secrets to great design which she already knows innately. “A house should evolve with you, updating as you go along. It’s never finished. When it is, you start again,” Karl said. In the meantime, the couple has reached their true "comfort" level. ❖ 74

ome consider gardening a chore, for others it is a hobby and for this homeowner it is an everevolving experiment, that let's face it, sometimes feels more like a mad scientist's lab than a Martha Stewart segment. No matter what it feels like; it looks like a million bucks. The sprawling backyard is home to several beds of gorgeous flowers, all of which the homeowner remembers choosing and planting. Most she knows by name, and if not, her husband, a big fan of gardening as well, is only a phone call away. Speaking their own backyard language, she explains, "You know, the little purple ones," and he knows exactly the bloom she means, and she nods saying, "Yes, Yarrow that's what I thought." Yarrow, a flowering plant native to the Northern Hemisphere and common-
ly grown in New Mexico and Colorado is translated to "little feather" and is one of many plants that inhabit the couple's backyard. The homeowner's real passion began when the couple put in their pool and, "wanted some perennials." This meager intention quickly became something else entirely, and the couple found themselves passionately pursuing all things botanical. It all began one afternoon while meeting with the late Chuck Freeman, the man responsible for designing their flawless pool area, when the couple ran into a young man, then only 21 years old who was applying to assist Freeman with some landscaping jobs. A serendipitous meeting it was, as this young gentleman would become the couple's friend and guru of sorts who, to this day visits their yard and assists with planning. Jason Delaney, who is now

the senior outdoor horticulturist at the Missouri Botanical Garden is, "our inspiration," the homeowner says explaining how he, "has taught us so much. Every year," we discuss what we are going to try, and what we aren't. He always encourages us to experiment." The homeowner recalls how in the beginning she, "loved pink, white and yellow because that's my mother's taste." The homeowner grew up loving gardening, surrounded by her mother's rose gardens. Now, the avid gardener has changed her tune, preferring, "Purples, and really all colors. Anything goes." Her favorites are as she puts it, "the little funky wildflowers" that pop up throughout the numerous beds, adding delicacy and interest to the abundant groupings. The spacious brick patio that leads to the backyard sets the tone for the space, leading in two directions, one to the gorgeous pool area which is flanked by two large rose gardens, and the other to the numerous beds of various blooms that line the perimeter of the ample yard. The patio is impressive on its own, with two seating areas, one for lounging and a more formal glass-top table with rod iron chairs, providing a space

for both entertaining and relaxation. The existing red brick patio leads to the pool area that features a custom built pool house that the homeowner had designed in the image of a boat house she saw while vacationing in Cape Cod. "I knew we'd need some kind of shelter out there," she says, and like the rest of her yard, the shelter became more than just a port in the storm. With a classically New England style shake roof and a small kitchen, bar and seating area, the pool house is a home away from home. As for the pool, the homeowner also had clear ideas explaining how she, "likes symmetry and formal layouts, I always knew I wanted the Roman look with a scallop shape."
Surrounded by numerous planters filled with gardenia trees surrounded by geraniums, and a white picket fence brimming with climbing roses, the pool is an oasis and a retreat. Decorating the perimeter of the yard are several beds that boast larger than life hydrangeas, which the homeowner loves, "because they remind me of the east," but adds, "I don't like to arrange with them because they are so big and don't last." Instead she prefers making small arrangements using less conventional blooms like grape hyacinth, aster and her too many to mention wildflowers. Filling the beds are numerous daffodils, which the homeowner says,

"we've tried many kinds over the years," but decided that the frilled look of the Corona Daffodil are her favorite. Also making appearances are blue Speedwell Veronica, white daisies and Monarda, more commonly referred to as Bee Balm, that the owner loves, "because it blooms around the Fourth of July and is bright red". The beautiful beds are visited frequently by the couple, who both love to, "get a cocktail and walk around and see what is blooming," after her husband returns home from work. What began as a small perennial garden meant to accompany their new pool, the homeowners backyard is an escape full of wonderful sights, smells and interesting tid-bits from the homeowners, who thanks to their sincere passion, adventurous spirit and expert advisers have achieved what can only be described as an awe-inspiring space. â?&#x2013; 94
