Where are we going with our heritage?
Wales is dominated by a rich archaeological heritage, dynamic and representative of the plethora of peoples and cultures that have influenced our land. But the relationship between the archaeological resource and its passionate visitors is not always readily interconnected. There is a fine example at East Orchard Castle alongside the River Thaw, Aberthaw. Rarely visited, as the footpath access is not maintained, you would scarcely know it was there. East Orchard Castle has it all,
well, except for a great big wall encircling it, as it is more of a very grand manor house. Home of the Berkerolles family, a very old and proud Norman family from the time of the Norman conquest of Wales, East Orchard Castle has very large standing with walls several stories high. The building remains dominate a wonderful little medieval bridge – a fairly unique survivor of over 600 years. Unfortunately East Orchard yet again misses CADW’s protection radar. An organisation fat with tax payers’ money, that’s flittered away on paying its rich executives, whilst our heritage falters. East Orchard, with its unique bridge, sees large amounts of its masonry collapse or stolen every year. On paper it’s protected; in practice however there is no protection.
