Summer with Bridgend male Choir On two successive weekends, Bridgend Male Choir were in action as part of the Anglo-Welsh Festival of Male Choirs, staged in Birmingham Town Hall on 1st June and St David's Hall, Cardiff on 8th June. Then on 9th June, the choir was delighted to fulfil another annual commitment by singing at the conclusion of Mair's Walk for the Stepping Stones Cancer Charity. We enjoyed excellent weather and an excellent turnout of walkers, led by the irrepressible Max Boyce. The choral contribution inevitably included a rendering

The rhondda Symphony orchestra's star spangled concert All Saints Church, Porthcawl, Sunday 7th July at 7.30pm. This year the orchestra’s Porthcawl summer concert almost coincides with the 4th July celebrations and so it was easy to decide what the theme for the event would be. Once again the venue will be All Saints Church, Victoria Avenue, probably the orchestra’s favourite venue, where the acoustic is truly excellent. The selected programme includes music by a wide spectrum of American composers. Aaron Copland’s stunning ‘Fanfare For The Common Man’ and his suite from ‘Rodeo’ will contrast markedly with Barber’s 'Adagio for Strings'

of Hymns and Arias, with, of course, Max giving the solo. After this busy start to the summer, the choir will enjoy a short break before the engagements continue with another invitation for the choir to sing at the Armed Forces Day in Cooper's Field, Cardiff on Saturday 29th June. Again, we pray for good weather! On Friday 5th July at the Cowbridge Leisure Centre, the Bridgend boys will share the stage with the choir of Pendoylan Church in Wales Primary School as well as selected winners of the 2013 Treorchy Eisteddfod in support of Prostate Cymru Charity. We are sure both events will be well supported. Tim o'HAgAn

and Charles Ives Symphony No 3 'The Camp Meeting'. Music from films is represented by John Williams’ 'Schindler’s List' (soloist Joanne Walters), Morass’ 'The Big Country' and Korngold’s swashbuckling music from 'The Seahawk' which starred Errol Flyn! The orchestra’s Principal Conductor, Donal Bannister (Principal trombone of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales), will perform Pryor’s 'Thoughts of Love' and to complete the list the famous 'Liberty Bell March' by John Phillip Sousa will add a Monty Python touch to proceedings. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the full musical impact of a large symphony orchestra. Tickets: £10, (under 18s free) at the door, or tel: 01443 650412. Tony STrAdling
