RUNNER WILL’S COAST PATH CHALLENGE
Will Edwards of the Porthcawl Runners has begun his attempt to cover the entire Wales Coast Path throughout 2018. He has set himself the challenge of completing the full official 870 miles (1,400 kilometres) of the path in sections, while also raising money for both prostate cancer and breast cancer care. Will has long been inspired by Bill Bryson’s book A Walk in the 56 | seaside news
Woods, which is about Bryson’s attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail. But it is the heroic battles of people much closer to home which have given Will the extra motivation – fellow Porthcawl Runners who have been diagnosed with prostate and breast cancer in recent times. The path starts from Flintshire in the north and runs around the whole Welsh coast to Chepstow in the south. Will is fundraising via his JustGiving page. To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/william-edwards11 He is also blogging his journey at: wilfyporthcawl.wordpress.com Will also took inspiration from another fellow Porthcawl Runner Mark Bowen who, on New Year’s Eve, completed his own challenge of running on all 365 days throughout 2017. He clocked around 2,200 kilometres in total and, in doing so, also raised more than £1,500 for Many Tears Animal Rescue in Llanelli. Carl Field
REST BAY JUNIORS INTRODUCING OUR CAPTAINS Lewys has been a member of Rest Bay Lifeguard Club since he was young and Erin for the last five years, both describe being elected as Junior Captains as an absolute honour… here’s what they had to say about the role they have undertaken for the past year. “Rest Bay has always had a special place in my heart and I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the role”, says Lewys. “There is something extremely satisfying about being able to help others around you, motivate and see them progress”. Erin said, “I have had the greatest time and have met so many new people. I have been able to do so many new things I never thought I was capable of and I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to be junior captain”. As captains we aim to make everyone’s experience of lifeguards one to remember, making sure everyone is involved and having a good time, both in and outside of training. We have organised several social events, including beach barbecues and laser tag, which has brought club members together contributing towards the already wonderful atmosphere at the club. We would encourage any young person to join Rest Bay, whether you want to compete or just gain some lifeguard skills; there are lots of opportunities for everyone, with the emphasis on having fun! We look forward to welcoming you to Rest Bay! Lewys Williams and Erin Richards Rest Bay Junior Captains
