DISGRACEFUL SITUATION
FIVE PRECEPTS OF BUDDHISM
Dear Editor, I thought I must share this with your readers as it is something that must be raised for the sake of anybody requiring urgent medical attention. Recently, when visiting Porthcawl John Street we noticed a poor elderly lady lying on the road having collapsed. A number of good Samaritans were providing help and reassurance and some warmth, as it was very cold, using coats and some aluminium foil from a local retailer. I inquired if there was anything I could do provide a hot drink etc but was told the lady could not be moved and had been vomiting. Also the ambulance had been called a number of times. As there was nothing more I could do I went on my way to do some shopping. Around 40 minutes later on my way back to catch the bus the lady was still in the same place. I decided to see if the Police could help( as you know the local station is closed as is the local ambulance station). I went to the Police station as there was a Police car outside on the off chance. Luckily an off duty Policeman was there and I informed him of the situation. He said he may not be able to help but would try . We hear of this situation everyday of people waiting for ambulances or not getting appropriate care in hospital. Isn’t it about time something urgent is done and that politicians own up to their mistakes. Local MP’s surely can help but for an old lady to be left in the situation I describe it is totally unacceptable to be still waiting an hour and a half for an ambulance in the freezing cold. Dear Editor , Neville Evans gives us Five precepts of Buddhism (December and January Seaside News). The book ‘What is Buddhism?’, published by the Buddhist Lodge, London, answers: “If by atheist you mean one who rejects the concept of a personal God, we are”. It goes on to say: “A growing mind can easily digest the idea of a Universe guided by unswerving Law, as it can the concept of a distant Personage that it may never see who dwells it knows not where, and who has at some time created out of nothing a Universe which is permeated by enmity, injustice, inequality of opportunity, and endless suffering and strife”. Thus, in theory, Buddhism does not advocate belief in God and yet , where Buddhism is practiced, images and relics of Buddha’s have become objects of devotion by devout Buddhists. The Buddha, who never claimed to be God, has become a god in every sense of the word. C Brown, Porthcawl
