Momentous Day For Skerries Sunday last, 29th September was a truly memorable day in the history of Skerries, when President Michael D. Higgins visited the town to unveil the Sea Memorial, in honour of lives lost at sea The memorial, with 267 entries of ships and people lost in marine accidents off the North County Dublin coast, consisted of the restoration of a “totem pole” previously used by the Coast Guard, as both a viewing platform and as part of a rescue apparatus. This pole is well known to locals and was a local landmark, climbed by generations of Skerries residents and visitors. The pole fell into disrepair and was removed by the County Council for health and safety reasons about a decade ago. But a community-driven campaign led by

local businessman Karl Duff to “Bring Back the Pole” was initiated by award winning designer, Shane Holland on St. Patrick’s Day 2012. This saw local companies, community leaders and politicians co-operate to reinstate the pole, with 21st century safety improvements. This pole has now been redesigned and installed at the bandstand on Red Island Skerries, with individual plates of stainless steel set out around the plinth, marking each loss. The memorial carries the names of people and ships lost at sea, and forms one of Ireland’s largest registers of marine victims, comprising ships, fishermen, U-boats, sailors, swimmers, rescuers and

Your Award Winning Sharp Rise In Skerries RNLI Newspaper Launches Fingal Dublin Chamber Business Excellence Award

Balbriggan and District Chamber of Commerce Business Award recipient

We think you’ll find that our newspaper ‘stack’ is CONSIDERABLY bigger than theirs!

RNLI figures show that there was a major increase in Irish lifeboat launches during busy summer. Skerries was among those lifeboat stations that showed a large increase in their call outs on the same period last year. The lifeboat at Skerries was launched a total of 17 times. This figure is twice as much as last year. Much of this is down to the hottest summer we’ve enjoyed for many

years, and while many people were enjoying the prolonged sunshine, RNLI lifeboat crews were out helping those in trouble around the coast. Gareth Morrison, RNLI Divisional Operations Manager said: ‘With more people travelling to the coast over the summer months, RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews were busy keeping people safe. The commitment shown by our lifesavers that launched at all hours of the day and night in various conditions was outstanding. I would like to thank our supporters and fundraisers. Without their kind generosity and hard work we would not be able to equip and train our lifesavers or help so many people in trouble at sea and on inland waters,” he concluded.

Search On For Volunteer Of The Year North County residents are being urged to nominate local heroes for a national volunteer award. Launching the Awards, RTE presenter, Keelin Shanley called on people in the North County to nominate ordinary people who do extraordinary things in their communities. The Volunteer Ireland Awards are the major annual initiative to celebrate volunteering in Ireland that are coordinated by Volunteer Ireland. The awards invite entries from both the North and South of Ireland. Manager of Fingal Volunteer Centre, Stuart Garland said that

the awards celebrate and recognise the thousands of remarkable people across the island of Ireland who selflessly give their time and talent to benefit others and their communities. “The search for the 2013 Volunteer of the Year is now on! We’re calling on all North County residents to help us shine a light on the county’s remarkable volunteers. Members of the public can nominate their choice at www.volunteer.ie.” “Whether it’s helping a local sports club, raising funds for a charity or helping a local community group, we want to celebrate the selfless volunteers who regularly give their time to help to make Ireland a better place. Nominate a volunteer you know and share their inspiring story with us,” he concluded.

Swords resident, Cassandra By Patrick Finnegan Lottering is set to embark on @TheCountyLeader what she hopes will be a successful career in film making, with a new series that is currently being shot around Swords. The series, called Diary Number 33 is a detective/ psychological thriller, which she hopes will showcase Swords. Cassandra, who is originally from South Africa, has been living in Swords since 2002 and in that time, has become an Irish citizen. She told the County Leader about how she got into film making. “After I completed a book, I decided to venture into the world of film. I did my first acting classes at the Irish Film Academy and met actress, Rachel Sarah Murphy from Fair City and writer/director, Terry McMahon. They have acted as mentors for me and have provided me with the impetus to continue writing for film. I also received great encouragement and support from Sean Moffatt, a professional script writer with both RTE and BBC and he will take part in ensuring the series is a break in Tennessee visiting Presley’s Graceland mansion and the music mecca that is Nashville. Being an Elvis fanatic, it would only be right that Vicki brought the next best thing to light up her party, the winner of Elvis Idol 2006 in Las Vegas, Liam ‘Elvis’ Murphy. Liam had the crowd doing the Jailhouse Rock through the night, while Vicky and family danced themselves silly. DJ Howard Myers of Irish Country Music Radio was also on hand to get the square dancing off to a fine start. Not one to do things by half, Vicki and Michael managed to squeeze in their wedding anniversary celebrations on the same night and danced away to the tune of Love Me Tender. What a Night!

success,” she said. The actors and crew are mainly from the Swords area, and all work is voluntary. “I have a few men and women from Swords, who never had any acting classes up to now, and I gave them the chance and they have been a revelation to me. We have no funding for this series, but all the crew are very supportive and give their time for free. We hope to apply for funding to cover our expenses.” “The reason I’m shooting the film in Swords is due to the great potential the area has. I want to highlight Swords and encourage more local people to get into acting,” she said. Cassandra eventually hopes that RTE, TV3, or BBC will show interest in the series and take it to greater heights. Filming for the first series has Swords film maker, Cassandra Lottering already begun since early September. is at ease behind the camera.

Letter To The Editor… Why Voting No Is Wise Choice Dear Sir No one has argued convincingly why a two-house system is best, or why keeping and fixing both the Seanad and Dáil is essential for prosperity and wellbeing. A two-house system is the best parliamentary system yet devised. It comes from human nature itself. The simple principle on which a two-house system works is that two heads are better than one. When any individual has to make a decision about what is best to do on an important matter in life, the wise course is to run it by someone whose judgement is trusted and objective. It is the same with Parliament, which is just the same thing scaled-up. The Dáil, or Lower House, is like the individual person needing to decide: it represents the active and passionate part of our national being, as debated by TDs. The Seanad, or Upper House, when working properly, is like the wise person one turns to for guidance: it represents the considered and objective part of our national being. Both are essential for good government and good legislation. Abolition of the Seanad is like cutting off the head of what should be your wise and trusted counsellor. For this reason alone, abolition is madness. We are blessed to have a two-house system. Our parliament should be modelled as closely as possible on the principle of ‘two heads are better’. But we’ve made a botch job of this, which is why our system needs fixing. To function well, the Dáil must have an able, independent and objective point of reference outside of itself to which it refers all legislative proposals. In other words, the Dáil must have a properly functioning Seanad as a prerequisite to doing its own job well. The Seanad is not called the Upper House without good reason. This outlines the respective role of each House and their true relation, each to the other. Well-meaning or not, the fault for the Seanad being the sickly and lowly body we find today, lies solely with the politicians themselves. They and their party machines made it so. Obviously, it is best to fix and cure the Seanad by treating its disease with the right medicine. But abolitionists would have us kill the patient instead. This cannot be right. Abolition is not reform, but the avoidance of reform. Not one argument for abolishing the Seanad stands up to examination, when taken in the wider view. The case for keeping and fixing it is overwhelming, as anyone who examines the matter honestly will realise. Voting ‘No’ means that we, the people of Ireland.... (i) want Seanad Éireann as an institution of government (ii) want a Seanad that works effectively and is fit-for-purpose (iii) want a Seanad where we, the people, have a say in electing its members Abolition offers none of this. We’re being hoodwinked by our politicians into voting ‘Yes’ against our own best interests. In the process, they would have us mutilate the Constitution - the foundation of all our freedoms as a people and our institutions of government - by changing 42% of its articles; all for an ill-conceived, ill-considered and foolish political gimmick. This is utter folly. A wise Irish judge once said that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. As individuals we must be vigilant, but informed too. At the level of the National Parliament, vigilance is the proper function of an effective Seanad. To think otherwise is to be hoodwinked. Referendum-day on Friday, 4th October provides an opportunity to fix things. The outcome will affect the lives of everyone. So we need to get it right. A ‘No vote’ will be a de facto demand by the people for intelligent reform and an effective Seanad (and Dáil). This is the Constitutional birthright of every Irish citizen. We’ve waited 75 years for this. Let’s wait no longer; let’s go for it and get it right. Your vote counts. Yours faithfully Barry Jones Founder of TruGov Barry Jones has conducted extensive research into the background and issues related to the Seanad. He has written several insightful articles on the subject, which are available on the TruGov website. TruGov is an independent think-tank enquiring into the principles of good government and associated political reform, as a service to the people of Ireland. It is voluntary, civic-minded and non-party political. He is a son of the late Jack Jones, father of political polling in Ireland.

Kids’ Club Seeks New Members Fingal Tri Juniors are a section of the North County based Fingal Triathlon Club and have been on the go since 2012. Starting off last year with a group of senior club members sitting around a table wondering what they should do to get a kids club off the ground, they finally settled on holding a fun ‘training session’ every Thursday during the summer on Skerries South Strand Beach. In April this year, they launched their running/cycling sessions on

Thursday evenings in Swords. With some help from Triathlon Association of Ireland getting equipment and training sorted, the sessions got off to a great start. Now as we head into the winter, they are bringing their running sessions indoors on Thursday evenings in Holywell Community Centre in Swords and they’ll continue like this until next Spring. They are always looking for new members, so whether your child has been involved in running, cycling or swimming lessons before, or if this is their first time they’d love to have them along. All the information on their website www.fingaltri.ie/juniors.

Plans For Historic Balbriggan Building One of Balbriggan’s oldest and most historic buildings could find a new purpose in life, after its planned restoration, as a base to train staff and volunteers involved in the North County’s

major emergency plan. The so-called ‘Boat House’ in Balbriggan had fallen into disrepair until Balbriggan’s town clerk, Brian Murray, took the building on as a ‘pet project’ and worked with

the County Council on finding a new purpose for the building. That has already led to improvements to the Boat House in terms of securing the building and repairing its interior. The work done so far has allowed the area’s major emergency plan team to use the building for storage. But a planned second phase of restoration will work on the outside of the building and could create a training base for the county’s major emergency team, according to Murray, who updated the Balbriggan Town Council on the plans for the building at its September meeting. The update came as Cllr Gráinne Maguire (NP)

called on the local authority to put the funding in place to restore the historic building, which she said was “one of the very few historical buildings we have left in Balbriggan.” Murray assured the councillor that there were ‘active plans’ in place for the building’s restoration, but it may be next summer before funding is secured to take on the second phase of those works. The town councillors were unanimous in their support of the building’s restoration with Cllr. Larry Dunne (FG) and Cllr. Monica Harford (Lab), both emphasising the importance of preserving the building in their contributions to the debate.

IN SERIOUS DEBT? YOUR OPTIONS UNDER THE NEW PERSONAL INSOLVENCY REGIME The bursting of the property bubble and subsequent banking crisis has left many people fearful of opening their post in the morning and answering the phone. For those who are unable to pay their debts as they fall due and see no light at the end of the tunnel, will welcome the enactment of the Personal Insolvency Act, 2012. The Act has allowed for three new debt solutions: Debt Relief Notice to be availed of if the debts do not exceed €20,000.00, your income (after deduction of reasonable living expenses) does not exceed €60.00 per month and your assets do not exceed €400.00. You will be subject to a 3 year supervision period. At the end of the 3 year period, if your financial situation has not improved, one or all of your debts are written off. Only “qualified debt” can be written off for example, family law maintenance ordered by a court and court fines in respect of criminal offences are specifically excluded. Debt Settlement Arrangement to be availed of if your debt is unsecured (does not include mortgage debts). Examples of unsecured debt would be credit union loans, credit card debt and monies owed to a bank on a personal loan. You can still qualify for a Debt Settlement Arrangement if you have a mortgage but the mortgage, will not be included in your application. The purpose of availing of the scheme is to protect you and your assets from legal proceedings which otherwise could be taken against you by those that you owe the money to. You will not be required to sell any assets that are reasonably necessary for your business or employment, for example your car provided that your car is suitable. Cases may arise where it will be suggested that you downsize your vehicle. Personal Insolvency Arrangement to be availed of if your debts are secured (includes mortgage debt) subject to a limit of €3,000,000.00 (unless your creditors agree to a higher

limit). It is important to note at the outset that a mortgage on your family home can only be included where you have cooperated with your mortgage provider for at least 6 months prior to seeking to include the mortgage in the arrangement. To proceed with a Personal Insolvency Arrangement, you must formulate your arrangement with an Insolvency Practitioner. The role of the Insolvency Practitioner is to prepare your financial statements and invite those that are owed money to make submissions on their debt. The Personal Insolvency Practitioner will work with you to get over the hurdles required to have your arrangement approved by the Insolvency Service, but if the process fails or is terminated, you will most likely at this stage be considering bankruptcy. If your Personal Insolvency Arrangement is approved, it will be reviewed at least once per year, to ensure compliance with payments to your creditors as set out in your arrangement. There is no doubt that the new schemes are a welcome step. Most people are terrified to receive court proceedings for debts due and even letters from banks which are designed to intimidate people to pay money that they simply do not have. The option of which arrangement is right for you, will largely depend on the type of debt, your income, your assets and how much you owe, but you must remember that you have a duty to always act in good faith in all your dealings irrespective of which option you intend to pursue. Before embarking on any process, it is important that your financial position is analysed by a personal insolvency practitioner so that an appropriate solution is recommended to you. You should ensure that the personal insolvency practitioner you consult is authorised by the Insolvency Service of Ireland. Local Businessman Aims To Restore Irish Sugar Industry Well known local businessman, Michael Hoey, who is Managing Director of Country Crest in Lusk, is at the forefront of an effort to rejuvenate the Irish sugar industry. Beet Ireland is a consortium of farmers and suppliers set on rejuvenating Ireland’s sugar industry. Proposals to rejuvenate the Irish sugar industry here have been underway for approximately three years, and are led by Country Crest MD, Michael Hoey, who has worked with a number of farming representatives and TDs, in order to gain traction for the plans. Ireland ceased sugar production in 2006 with the closure of the Mallow plant operated by Greencore. Ireland imports approximately €230 million worth of sugar a year. German firm Nordzucker acquired the rights to

Ireland’s biggest sugar brand, Siucra, in 2009. On 24th September, Beet Ireland launched it’s first public fundraiser for €6 million at the National Ploughing Championships in Co. Laois. This fundraiser is the next step on the road to developing a new sugar and bioethanol industry for Ireland. The new target date for processing sugar beet is 2017, following the finalisation of of the EU CAP Agreement last July by Minister for Head of Beet Ireland, Agriculture, Simon Michael Hoey. Coveney. Currently the cost of all sugar imports for Ireland is over €300 million per annum and the Beet Ireland model plans that growers will play a central role in the redevelopment of Ireland’s sugar industry.

Swords Playgrounds Dream Now A Reality The dream of having two new playgrounds in Swords is quickly becoming a reality, after the Swords Needs Playgrounds committee received a well-needed boost from Fingal Leader Partnership. The grant assistant provider granted €150,000 towards the two playgrounds and all-weather pitch, which are to be built on sites at Swords Manor and Thornleigh in Applewood, following a recent application made by the committee. The Swords Needs Playgrounds committee applied to the Partnership for the grant to help with part of the funding, as the facilities are costing in the region of €250,000. And as a result of the funding, along with the County Council’s commitment of 25 per cent of the total cost, as well as the committee’s €16,000, they have already raised, they only need a further €8,000 to meet their target of €25,000. ‘We are absolutely delighted with the

grant from Fingal Leader Partnership,’ said Marica Killi, who is the Director of Swords Needs Playgrounds.” She said the community in Swords has come together over the past few months, organising events and donating money for the facilities, which she says, will benefit everyone in the community. The playgrounds will be designed to be sensory and disability friendly as possible, as well as able-bodied, anti-vandal proof and suitable for all children with safety flooring being laid down. It is hoped construction work can begin before Christmas for the facilities to be ready for use next summer.

Car Theft Epidemic Hits North County

Car owners in the North County are being warned to be vigilant about leaving valuable items in their cars, while parking. A total of five cars are reported to have been broken into at the County Council carpark, beside the Waterside Hotel at Donabate beach on the same day. A phone call to the County Leader from a man, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke about this problem, which happened in broad daylight on Monday afternoon, 23rd September. He claimed that this is an ongoing problem and has been happening all year round. The man’s daughter and her partner, were one of the five people, who had their car broken into on Monday, with a handbag and mobile phone stolen. “The handbag and phone were well hidden and out of sight, but they were obviously being watched by the thieves. There should be a warning sign at the car park,” he said. This comes hot on the heels of a story of four men, who have been charged in relation to thousands of euro worth of vehicles and parts, in what gardai have described as a “lucrative criminal enterprise.” The men, all foreign nationals have been charged with handling stolen property at McAuley’s Yard at Courtlough, Balbriggan on 20th September last. The vehicles included, a BMW 316, Audi A5. Audi A3 and a Nissan Qashqai, all top end cars.

Meadow Pipits Safe On Paddy’s Hill Baffled residents of Portmarnock started to question why the grass on Paddy’s Hill in the area, has not been cut and is starting to become unattractively long. The council explained why they only have the grass cut once a year. Their reason is that this

particular spot in Portmarnock provides a habitat for ground nesting birds, called Meadow Pipits. Local councillor Judy Dunne (Lab) posted the question at a recent meeting of the council and was told that, “The grass in Robswall Park, which

includes Paddy’s Hill, is maintained as meadow and is cut annually in consultation with the Biodiversity Officer. The aim of this type of grassland management is to create a diversity in herbaceous flowering plants, while providing a habitat and food source for invertebrates and Meadow Pipits.”

Students’ Driving Skills Tested Balbriggan Safety Week took place recently, and one of the highlights of the event, was when schools were invited to try out the Audi A4 Roll over Simulator. This is the only one of it’s kind in the country and it gave those brave enough to test it out, the chance to see how it would feel if you were a driver or passenger involved in a less than desirable road traffic incident. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) trailer gave students a chance to test their driving skills in the car and bike simulators and to test their brake reaction time. They could also practice the driver theory test on board.

Applications Invited For Youth Sport Grants

by Jennifer McShane

A Passionate Lady To say that Ernestine Woelger is extremely passionate about community life, would be a bit of an understatement. She is devoted to her family and having lived in Skerries for generations, has become a pillar of community life. Hailing originally from Austria, Ernestine came to Skerries in 1992 soon after meeting her husband, Ray Ryan and It’s here she has remained, with her two daughters, Hildegard and Astrid ever since. “Our daughters are Skerries girls all right,” she said, smiling. “My husband’s family came here and eventually we settled here too, as we wanted our daughters to be close to their grandparents and so on. We love the town and the community spirit here and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.” Ernestine would be a well known face around the seaside town for a very prominent reason: she is the co-ordinator of the hugely popular Skerries Soundwaves Festival, which has just finished celebrating it’s 10th year. It’s a huge milestone for the community and ever since it’s beginnings, the festival has well and truly gone from strength to strength. “This year, the festival was bigger and better than ever,” Ernestine excitedly told the County Leader. “The festival ran over two weekends and it was a fantastic success. Everyone seemed to really enjoy all the events that were on.” Indeed, the line-up was so vast, it’s a wonder they fit so much in! Highlights included: well known Skerries local, Ryan O’Shaughnessy, who after starting his rising career by appearing on Britain’s Got Talent, put on a fantastic show on Saturday, the unique Words and Music event, a sublime classical concert featuring international pianist Therese Fahy, and of course, the Street Party and Festival Finale. These are just a taste of what was on over the two weekends and as Ernestine herself said, it’ was impossible to pick a favourite! “I truly enjoy everything, but I particularly loved the classical concert, the céilís and the electric atmosphere that was around the town,” she said, happily. She was keen to point out that the emphasis of the festival was to highlight local talent, and really show visitors the best that the town had to offer. “Each year, we get a brilliant response from our immensely talented community and the festival was a perfect opportunity to showcase that.” This extremely active lady is so full of passion and enthusiasm that she is the ideal woman to take on the tricky task of organising such a big

festival, and it’s evident that she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love everything about the festival, and it is my main hobby. It takes a great deal of work to get it ready each year, but I have fantastic help and support from an amazing committee, who all pull together and make things happen. It’s very much a team effort, and nothing could be done without everyone’s input. We’re all very close and it’s an extremely social thing too. The event itself is a yearly thing and we all get a chance to be extremely creative in the planning stages.” “The festival is absolutely a labour of love and really consumes me,” she continued. “But I get so much out of it.” She is also very passionate about volunteering in itself (the entire festival is run by tireless volunteers) and says it’s a terrific way to engage with the community. “I’ve always loved volunteering and think it’s the perfect way to interact with your neighbours and really connect with your community.” She explains how she came to be involved in the festival: “Before Soundwaves started, there was a similar event on in the town called ‘Spotlight on Skerries,’ which ran for quite a few years, and suddenly there was a gap where nothing happened. I was a Director of Skerries Community Association and I kept saying, ‘Oh, we’ve got to do something, we need a festival’ and then I decided to take a chance and apply to the Fingal Arts Council and I was thrilled when we got a grant. Then it was very much a case of, oh, so we have to actually make something happen now!” she said, laughing. “I just knew that Skerries should have an event on, because I’ve always believed that a community that celebrates together is a stronger community.” She says that her greatest achievement in her life has to be her family, and that when she’s not focused on the festival, she loves spending time with her family, gardening and cycling. “I’ve always loved cycling, and my husband runs the Skerries Cycling Initiative, so it’s something we can enjoy together. I loved cycling in Austria and I’d love to see a bigger cycling circuit all around the North County.” In terms of the future, she said she wants to see the Skerries Soundwaves Festival go from strength to strength. “The festival this year was our biggest yet, and as I love being involved with it so much that I just want to see it continue to gain momentum and be something that the people of Skerries enjoy,” she concluded.

“A community that celebrates together is a stronger community”

One hundred and eighteen new classes are to open in schools across the North County for students with special needs. The extra classes in the North County are part of a nationwide programme. The announcement was made by the National Council for special education. Deputies, Brendan Ryan (Lab) and Deputy Alan Farrell (FG) both welcomed the announcement. Ryan said: “The classes will have lower pupil teacher ratios from 1:6 to 1:11, allowing children to receive the individual attention they need. This brings the total number of special needs classes to over 740 in mainstream schools, catering for over 5,000 children with special needs across the country. These additional classes means that 242 special classes have been created during the lifetime of this government - a 50 per cent increase in the avail-

ability of special classes.” Farrell said: “These classes will be attached to mainstream schools and are an option for students with significant needs that cannot be met in a mainstream class. I would like to commend the schools in Dublin for opening up their facilities for special education classes. It is reassuring for parents and children that they can have their needs met locally, without having to travel long distances every morning for school.” The NCSE has published a booklet that has all the information on what supports are available in these schools and it informs parents trying to decide where to enrol their child with special education needs. The booklets are accessible to download from the NCSE website.

Health Issues For Farmers

New 4G Services Welcomed There has been a wide welcome for the launch of 4G services in Ireland and especially here in the North County, where the lack of broadband coverage is seen to be hampering local businesses. 4G services allow users internet access at data speeds up to 10 times faster than the current quality. The service has been launched so far by Eircom and other telecoms companies will be launching their own products soon. 4G services provided over mobile phones and other connected equipment, such as iPads and laptops allow users to access data speeds up to 10 times faster than current 3G technologies. Users can send and receive emails, browse the internet, play games, download apps and music or upload content to social media at higher speed and without interruption than is currently possible. The speeds available to the business sector will match those available elsewhere for web browsing and video streaming It is hoped that areas, such as Naul will benefit from the much improved service and that businesses overall will be the winner.

by Dr Noel Richardson, Director of the Centre for Men’s Health at Carlow Institute of Technology, following alarming research by Health Service Executive medical consultant in public health, Dr Breda Smyth. Her study indicated that farmers have much higher death rates than most other groups in the occupational age range of 15 to 64 years old. The research, based on national mortality data,

found that the death rate of farmers was over five times higher than salaried employees, who had the lowest death rate. Farmers have particularly high mortality from circulatory diseases, cancers and injuries and poisonings. The high death rate was particularly associated with small farms with low income. ‘Staying Fit for Farming’ is available to download for free from www.teagasc.ie, and the HSE.

Woman Attacked Outside Balbriggan Church A 56 year old woman was attacked as she exited a church in Balbriggan last Friday. As she left St. Peter and Paul’s church at 6:15pm, she was attacked by a man who was shouting at her to “give me your keys”. He twisted her arm behind her back, forcing her to drop her keys on the ground. He was then joined by a second male who both jumped into the woman’s new Mercedes and sped from the scene. They were both tall with short hair and around 25 years old. The woman from Drogheda had her back turned throughout most of the incident and didn’t catch any more details. Although she received no physical injuries, she was ‘very shook up’. Gardai are appealing for witnesses and canvassing CCTV, wanting to trace the stolen car.

HOROSCOPES AQUARIUS

YOURVIEW

Jan 20 - Feb 18

It’s easy to say that letting go of the past is a prelude to a wonderful future. But relinquishing elements of your life that are as reassuring as they’re familiar is quite another matter. Signs indicate not to do anything drastic.

PISCES

With reporters Rebekah Murphy

Q:

Feb 19 - Mar 20

A rewarding week when dealing with personal relationships, when intriguing developments force you into action. In fact, you’ll enjoy dealing with these issues so much that you wonder why you delayed for so long.

ARIES

TAURUS

Apr 21 - May 20

The troubles you had last week, especially in the workplace, are about to be completely reversed, as those who thought they’d got away with their misdemeanours discover that they’ll have to pay the piper after all.

Gemini

May 21 - Jun 20

With work-related matters things are about to play into your hands. This so improves your position - and your spirits - that you can well afford to wait until next week, when those around you will finally see things your way.

Cancer

Jun 21 - Jul 22

This is a week when you begin to revitalise elements of your life that you’d given up on ever being exciting. And, better yet, you realise how unimportant difficult and interfering people are in the scheme of things.

Leo

Jul 23 - Aug 23

With all aspects of your life this week, your mood is grim. Complain if you want. Just keep in mind that, by the time next week, with its spectacular planetary activity, is over, you’ll be singing a much happier tune.

Virgo

Aug 24 - Sep 22

Having laboured over decisions involving work, you’re in no mood for change. However, indications are that these decisions are out of your hands - but, the disruption may not be as bad as you first thought.

Libra

Sep 23 - Oct 22

Don’t be too disheartened if the week seems slow - as change is coming. So much so, that with the week’s far more agreeable planetary activity, you’re able to move swiftly to take advantage of new prospects on offer.

Scorpio

Oct 23 - Nov 22

This is a week when you should be philosophical about downturns - and keep your own counsel. With next week’s far more salubrious planetary activity, you’ll be glad you didn’t say everything you were thinking.

Sagittarius

Nov 23 - Dec 21

However unsettling the outcome of one particular confrontation, finally having all the facts out in the open will come as a relief. Still, you should handle the situation carefully and slowly as things are bound to be confused.

Capricorn

Christine Dunne, Balheary

Dec 22 - Jan 19

You will be seeking reassurance with a business matter. But what you need to do is exercise patience to bide your time - until you see the stunning opportunities accompanying next week’s considerably better planetary activity.

Rebekah Murphy

“It depends, it’s the law over there, if she had pleaded not guilty and they found her guilty she would have got a longer term so she had to plead guilty to get the shorter term. I suppose she did right. I definitely think she is guilty. I hope this sets an example for other people, if you’re going to be doing this, you will get caught.”

Mar 21 - Apr 20

Once you begin to discuss problems openly you realise how willing others are to help you resolve them. In fact, this is what helps you this week to tackle dilemmas that you thought you’d just have to live with.

“If Michaela McCollum was innocent, should she have stuck to her guns and pleaded not guilty? Or was she right to plead guilty?”

Christy Finnegan, Donabate “I don’t really know to be honest, I wasn’t really following the story. I saw a bit about it and I do think she was right to plead guilty. I think she is guilty, she should not have been smuggling drugs, that’s my opinion.” Pictured at a recent tennis coaching session at Balrothery Tennis club are, Liz Wall and Elvina Jonot, with children, Stuart Wall, Hamilton Sidon and Noah Sidon.

Balbriggan Senior Citizens Balbriggan Senior Citizens are inviting everyone over the age of 60 to come and join them in the Senior Citizens Hall in the town. You can come any weekday from 10am until noon and enjoy a cup of tea or a chat. Bingo sessions also take place on Tuesdays at 8.30pm. Dee Byrne, River Valley “I don’t know a lot about it but I think she should have pleaded not guilty if she was innocent. I have mixed feelings about it but I do think she should have stuck to her guns. I think the law is crooked if you have to plead guilty when you’re not, just to get a shorter sentence.”

Frances Brown, Swords “If she was innocent, she definitely should have stuck to her guns. The subject is a bit dicey though, I think there’s a lot more going on that they’re not telling us. When she was going through security, she should have said there was something going on there but she didn’t. There’s something fishy about it.”

Helena Cole, Swords “She was right in pleading guilty. She’s a silly girl no matter what. I think she is guilty, no doubt about it. Obviously she got offered money, she thought it was a glamorous lifestyle and it wasn’t, it never will be. She was young and foolish. She deserves a sentence but I can’t say there or here. I’m not that cruel, I do feel for her too but she was just silly.”

Irene Nolan, Ballyboughal

“I haven’t really been following it. If she is innocent, I think she definitely should have pleaded not guilty. If she’s innocent she should be honest but whether she’s innocent is up for debate. Honesty is the best policy though.”

Josephine Collins, Swords “It doesn’t look good, first she’s keeping her fight up and now she’s pleading guilty. I know she was told to plead guilty but she’s not guaranteed she’ll get a shorter sentence. I feel sorry for her, a part of me thinks she was innocent and trapped into it and another thinks she knew exactly what she was doing. Fear can make you do anything.”

Mary Ryan O’Connell, Tipperary “I don’t think she should have been involved with anything to do with drugs and then she wouldn’t be pleading anything. She shouldn’t have touched any drugs in the first place, she knew what she was at. From the beginning, she shouldn’t have got involved. She put her finger in the water and got burnt.”

Neuza Filipe, Portugal “She should have stuck to her guns. If she didn’t do it, she never should have pleaded guilty. Honestly though, I do think she is guilty, there’s no smoke without fire in my opinion. “

Paul Goldrick, Swords “I don’t really think it matters if she was innocent or not she’s admitted it now. If she was innocent, I don’t think she should have pleaded guilty. She should have stuck to her guns. I don’t think she is innocent though, she was caught with the drugs, she was caught red handed.”

Ray Winfield, Donabate “I believe she was guilty and I think she did the right thing pleading guilty, so she can get the shorter sentence. She was seen having a good time in Peru with her friends and she wasn’t under any duress like she said she was. So I think she should have pleaded guilty and she needs to tell the truth.”

Sandra Crosby “I don’t think she really had much options with the way the system is but I think it was good that she pleaded guilty, she’s much better off. We found out at the end of the day anyway so I think she did the right thing. “

Shane O’Shea, Ashbourne “Yes I think that she absolutely should have stuck to her guns, if she was innocent. Unfortunately I do think she is guilty. It is very much live by the sword, die by the sword.”

Tracey Hyde, Swords “She was right in pleading guilty. She should stop wasting people’s time. They tried to raise money for her and not an awful lot of people got involved in that really. I think people realised she was guilty so she was right to plead guilty and not waste people’s time.”

Miracle Prayer Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for a very special one (mention request). Take it dear Jesus and place it in your broken Heart where your father sees it and then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favours will be granted. Never known to fail. (B.N)

It was with great sadness that we learned of Tony’s passing in Beaumont Hospital on August 15th. He was a tireless worker here at the NIFTI operation, and will be sorely missed by his friends and fellow directors, manager and staff In Ballyboughal. Tony was a founder member of NIFTI and, as a director over 10 years, watched out for, and sought to improve transport facilities for the people of Ballyboughal and beyond. His thoughts were always for the needs of his neighbours and friends in the locality, and he was indeed a champion on their behalf. Tony’s many and varied interests included motorcycling, and for many years he served as a safety Marshall in Skerries and indeed at other locations. His love of GAA was legendary and many a young buck got solid advice and warm encouragement from Tony that no doubt stood to them on the sports fields of Fingal. A recognised “Pikeman”, he gave selflessly of his time and energy as each occasion demanded. Well known in Fianna Fáil circles, he wasn’t one bit shy in letting a minister or two know how the public mood was. People always wanted to stop for a chat with Tony, and going for his paper of a morning sometimes took quite a while! When the Tidy Towns project was afoot, he personally ensured that any flower boxes needing water got it, and any other item needing attention never escaped his eagle eye. We extend our deep condolences to his loving family, and hope God will give them strength to endure his passing. May he Rest in Peace. RC
