Balscadden Ready For Tidy Towns Judges Since the glorious moment Spain won their first ever World Cup four years ago, the world has eagerly waited for the next FIFA World Cup. Some may claim that the World Cup is like the summer Christmas, only it arrives every four years. Arguably, this makes it the most eagerly anticipated event of all time, in the football crazy countries anyway. Last Thursday it all kicked off in Brazil, and the world’s gone football crazy. Although Ireland haven’t qualified for the cup this year, we haven’t let this stop us from celebrating this event with the rest of the world. Many may have taken to supporting neighbouring countries, others to supporting countries on the opposite side of the world, but we all have one thing in common, we’re each an avid fan of football for this month at least, if not usually. Most of us may not even have a choice, due to the wide exposure of football we’ll be seeing everywhere. So, the saying goes, if you can’t beat them, join them. Watching the World Cup on your own, is like going to a theme park by yourself, it’ll end up being disappointing and no fun. The World Cup is a time where the communities really get together. There’s nothing better than spending 90 minutes in a crowded room in your local pub, or bar, with your family and friends, possibly supporting different teams. All are on the edge of their seats, eyes glued to the

TV, looking for the next goal. Your team have just scored, beer’s spilling everywhere, you’re singing their supporting song. You turn for a manly bear hug with the person next to you, who may very well be a stranger. But that doesn’t matter here, you two strangers sharing a strong bond of love and support for this football team. Now you wouldn’t get that sitting home alone, in a quiet room watching the World Cup, would you? All the more reason to pop down to your local

pub and share your interest with everybody. For some, this may bring back a sense of nostalgia, every Saturday night down the pub was like this, now most people have become secluded in their own homes, with technology bringing everything we need to us, without having to step outside the door. Therefore, we should cherish these moments that we spend in our locals together, celebrating the World Cup. Many pubs, bars and restaurants in the North County area will have specials on food and drinks, so you can enjoy this even more with the public. You are guaranteed to get keen

prices, in the end, saving you money, which is bound to make the World Cup even more enjoyable. Many of our local stores have taken to the spirit of it, and selling World Cup merchandise, so we can join in the fun. Fashion outlets are bringing football themes into fashion this year, inspired by the rich, bold colours of Brazil, paying homage to the host country. Show you’re support for the country your supporting, with their national football t-shirt, or stay neutral with a Brazil Jersey perhaps. Either way, however you want to show your support, the local fashion outlet is sure to sell a piece that appeals to you, in this football season. For some, watching footballers run around in the competition isn’t enough, and you’ll want to get involved in the action yourself. Our local sports stores are stocked up on football gear, ready to give you the best head start in getting involved in the sport. From the best football boots, to footballs, everything you need to be the best you can, will be in your local sports store. The World Cup may have introduced you to the world of sports, or rekindled your love for fitness, in which case, you’re bound to find the best items for, from trainers to weights. It’s a great time, which only comes every four years. Enjoy it.

Balscadden village and the environs is looking good these days, as the many volunteers from the local tidy towns group give of their time to make sure the grass verges are cut, weeds kept under control, flower beds enhanced. Whatever else it takes to make it a village to be proud of. “Judges are due any day now from the Tidy Towns, and it is so important that we get as many people as possible to come out and give the village and the surrounding areas the face lift it deserves,” John Farrelly PRO told the County Leader. He went on to say,” that every second Saturday at 10am we meet at the church car park and we take it from there. All you need is a brush or rake, shovel or strimmer and an hour of your time. It is great crack when you get into it and you see the results of your efforts unfold before your eyes.” “Great improvements have taken place in the last number of months; especially the new car park at the old graveyard, which has just been constructed and is a sight to behold, and a very special thanks goes to the many volunteers for making it happen,” he concluded.

Butler Welcomes Funding For Swords Church Swords councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) has expressed his delight that funding of €15,000 has been made available towards the restoration of St. Columba’s Church, Church Road, Swords, under the Built Heritage Jobs Leverage Scheme 2014. He told the County Leader, “I would see the restoration and re-opening of this church as of huge importance to Swords, and anything that helps towards this is very helpful, however there is still a long way to Cllr. Butler go. If there are any generous benefactors out there, I would ask them to visit www.helpusmakehistory.org and see what you can do to help this campaign. The new scheme aims to assist with the repair and conservation of Protected Structures and buildings within Architectural Conservation Areas that contribute to the character of the place. It is intended to support the employment of skilled and experienced conservation professionals, craftworkers and tradespeople.
