Lusk Targeted For Monster Sewage Plant A new groundswell of anger has emerged in the North County, with the naming of the three sites, which are shortlisted for the proposed new Monster Sewage Plant. The proposed sites are at Newtowncorduff, 1km west of Lusk; Annsbrook, 2.7km west of Lusk; and Clonshaugh, 2.2km east of Dublin airport. Local resident and Minister for Health, James Reilly was unavailable for comment, despite promises to facilitate the meeting late last year. The news comes as a particular disappointment to locals, many of whom believed from the outset that ‘their man’ Reilly would come to the rescue and they would not have to endure the misery of having such a monster plant being located in their backyard. They find this particularly hard to understand, particularly as the minister himself is resident in this area. Local coucillor and prominent anti-sewage plant

Ugly End Of Term Scenes At Skerries School By Peter Kearney End of term celebrations at Skerries Community College turned ugly last Tuesday morning, when it was reported a group of 6th year students went on a rampage and damaged school and private property. The so called “celebrations”, which necessitated the calling of the Gardai to the school, resulted in students being sent home and the school graduation being cancelled. End of years celebrations are quite the norm at the Skerries school. The celebrations mark the end of year for sixthyear students, due to sit Leaving Certificate examinations. Students typically engage in the odd prank at this time of year, which always passes in great spirits. For some unknown reason, this year’s celebrations passed with an ugly twist. One of the students, who did not wish to be named told the County Leader, “Students were asked to leave the school at 11.30am on Tuesday, to avoid any further incident in the school, as there had been minor disruptions in previous weeks. A text message was

By Kieran Dunne campaigner, Ken Farrell (Lab), was furious when he told the County Leader, “It was always the policy of the Council to divide and conquer the community in regard to the sewage plant. I believe that this is the very ground that will win this fight for the people of the northern part of the county. There is more determination now than ever, to mobilise and be motivated to resist any attempt to have this massive sewage plant here. This proposal has the effect of uniting the people in all of the towns and villages in the area,” he said. Lusk Waste Watchers Group spokesperson, Lorcan O’Toole told the County Leader, “The County Council seem to think that they can use and abuse the locality of Lusk. This area has suffered more than most at the hands of this sent to parents, informing them of this. This is usual for each year, as the school attempts to avoid disruption as much as possible. Students left the school and returned home.” “A number of students then returned to the school, armed with eggs and water balloons, some of which were masked or disguised. These were then thrown at school property, cars and other students as they were leaving during their lunch break. The Gardai were called by a concerned neighbour, as the school is in a residential area. Egg-throwing has resulted in a requirement for an industrial cleaning of the school. The result was that the graduation was cancelled,” the source concluded. Unfortunately a small group of students returned on Wednesday night to inflict further damage on the school. Students not involved in the events are understandably upset, as a lot of work was put into the ceremony, though there seems to be a general consensus of understanding. An alternative ceremony, completely independent of the school, was arranged and held at the Bracken Court Hotel in Balbriggan. Those connected with the school are shocked at what happened and disappointed that the graduation was cancelled. When the County Leader contacted Skerries Community School they said they had “no comment” to make on the matter. The Parents Association were unavailable for comment and attempts to contact the Students Council were unsuccessful. It is hoped that this matter will be closed shortly and to everybody’s satisfaction.

council. This latest plan will be too much for many of us to bear and there is going to be a very strong reaction. The local authority continues to ignore the legitimate concerns of the people they are supposed to serve,” he said. Two of the three shortlisted sites are within a short distance of the village. Either of these would require a massive pipeline connecting the plant to the sewage network of Dublin city and onward to a coastal outfall near Loughshinny. O’Toole continued, “The pipeline alone will create a massive scar the length of the North County and cost a fortune. Pumping millions of litres of sewage this distance and then into the sea at Loughshinny is possibly the most inefficient solution possible. This plant is not even intended to process our sewage; it’s sewage from outside the area that will be dumped on us. This is a disgrace.” The decision to develop a huge industrial plant to handle sewage from outside the North County area and site it in prime agricultural land has dismayed local residents, many of whom have been unable to obtain planning permission for houses on their own land. “They have consis-

tently refused permission for any form of development in the area, due it’s sensitive rural nature. This proposal is a real slap in the face for us all. Despite 10,000 objections, they are carrying on regardless. They just don’t listen,” concluded O’Toole. Meanwhile, the County Leader contacted the office of the Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan, seeking his comments on the shortlisting. A spokesperson for the Minister said, “It would be inappropriate for the Minister to involve himself in these statutory functions of the local authorities. There is no role for the Minister in these proceedings, until such time time as the local authority has concluded the site and route selection processes and then gone through the statutory processes under the Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Act, 2006 ,” the statement concluded. The County Council will accept submissions on the sites until 6th July and will host information meetings in County Hall, Swords, on 30th May and 14th June – from 2pm to 8pm and on 16th June from 11am to 4pm.

Balbriggan Steps Are ‘Safety Hazard’ The steps at a laneway in Balbriggan have been deemed to be a Health and Safety hazard. According to local councillor, Ken Farrell (Lab), the steps at the top of the laneway, which connects Clonard Rise, Clonard Street and Tara Court, with the graveyard and Millfield Shopping Centre in Balbriggan, are now unsafe to use.

By Patrick Finnegan Farrell, who tabled a motion at the last Council meeting to have the steps replaced with a ramp, is confident that the motion will be viewed favourably by the County Manager. The County Leader paid a visit to the area and witnessed, at first hand, the difficulty experienced by mothers trying to manoeuvre prams and buggies up and down the steps. People regularly use this to visit loved ones in the nearby graveyard and to the shops. Local resident, Yvonne Horan uses the steps on a regular basis, told the County Leader, “Many people who use this route every day find difficulty with bikes, buggies and prams. In fact, only last week, a lady in a wheelchair was unable to get up the steps, as the wheelchair got stuck and couldn’t be freed. She had to wait there for her husband to return from work to free her. It’s a disgrace. Many people who are struggling with prams, can momentarily lose concentration and another child in their care, can wander on to Harry Reynolds Road and into speeding traffic,” she said. Councillor Farrell is confident of a positive response to his motion and local deputy Brendan Ryan (Lab), who also visited the area gave an assurance that if a positive result to replacing the steps with a ramp was not forthcoming, he would “bring the matter up on the floor of the Oireachtas.”

ast Saturday was truly a memorable day in the history of JCs Supermarket on Rathbeale Road in Swords. It was the day they gave away a Renault Fluence, worth over €20,000 in their Car Draw. From early in the day, there was an atmosphere of anticipation, as shoppers feverishly filled in their coupons, hoping that they would be declared winners of the car. MC for the day was Barry Savage, who kept the gathered shoppers entertained with some witty banter. Prizes of hampers and other goodies were given away, as shoppers were invited to Spin the Wheel. This attracted a large expectant crowd in an effort to be selected to spin and win. All of the tickets were put into a Plexiglas container, which showed the vast amount of tickets, demonstrating the popularity of the draw. Then at 4pm, with excitement reaching fever pitch, the draw was made and the lucky ticket was drawn out. The winner was Liam Fletcher, who comes from St Columba's Heights in Swords, but now resides in Sutton. Liam was not in the shop at the time, but was contacted by phone by Michael Savage. Many special offers were available on the day and most people left with a bargain or two. The children were also catered for, with face painting and sweets to keep them happy. The day ended with a lot of happy faces, happy in the knowledge that they had secured some exceptional bargains on this Savage Saturday.

Local TD Alan Farrell (FG), is calling on the Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn, to consider the launch of a public campaign to encourage parents to address issues around bullying with their children. This is part of National AntiBullying week and in the run up to the Department’s National Bullying forum this month. “I welcome the Department of Education’s upcoming forum on bullying in schools to be held this month. I would strongly urge that, as part of this campaign, we encourage parents to engage with their children about the issue of bullying. Parents are uniquely positioned to identify signs of bullying in their children, be they the victim or the perpetrator,” he said. He continued: “I would urge the Minister for Education to launch a national campaign, consistent with expert guidelines, which would encourage parents to address the issue of bullying with their children of all ages. It is an informal and personal way to educate children on what bullying actually involves, and how it can impact the children around them.” “I am confident that participation in the upcoming national anti-bullying forum is embraced by teachers and parents across the country and I hope that it will result in a successful approach to making school life significantly easier for our students.”

When asked by Pat Kenny, if we get Maternity and Paediatric hospitals for the price of €600 million, which is less than the proposed €650 million for the Mater site, Whelan confirmed that not only could it be built for €600 million, but this would include all new Diagnostic, Scanning, X Ray and Theatre equipment. Whelan went on to say that the Broadmeadow Healthcare Group’s vision right from the outset of the submission to the Review Group was for a Paediatric Hospital to be linked to a Maternity Hospital with High Risk Pregnancy Unit included, as the most appropriate co-location with long-term potential to grow. On the same show, retired Paediatric Oncologist, Dr. Fin Breathnach of the New Children’s Hospital Alliance, spoke of how he believed that the Children’s Hospital should not co-locate with an adult hospital at this stage. He believed that the Children’s Hospital must, critically and importantly, be firstly linked to a Maternity Hospital, on a Greenfield site of sufficient size to grow and accommodate a large adult hospital in time. The Broadmeadow Healthcare Group would create a truly tri-located facility, claims Whelan, which he believes can be fully accommodated at Lissenhall, Swords. Whelan emphasised “that the site had excellent access to the M1 which is currently being upgraded to 3 lanes with new slip roads, cycle and pedestrian routes.”

Polish Festival In Balbriggan A Summer Family Festival was held in St. Mologa’s National School Balbriggan recently. The event was organised by Lokomotywa Polska Szkola w Balbriggan. It was held in association with Fingal Ireland/Poland InterCultural Association (FIPICA). The festival was an integration inter-cultural event to celebrate the Polish Constitution Day, which was on earlier this month. “The Polish Constitution Day has the same importance for Polish people like St. Patrick’s Day has for Ireland. This is why we wanted to celebrate it and also to let more people know about our supplementary school.

There was a mixture of learning and fun elements,” said school, principal Olaf Berthold. “We got good feedback from people. There were attractions for all ages. Everyone was

happy to be here and all of them are already looking for our next event, which we are planning to organise in September,” said Alicja Laska from FIPICA. Activities on the day

Moving Tribute In Swords On the 25th of March, Alan Leetch known fondly as Screech to many in Swords and beyond died tragically. With a gift of the gab, Alan was known to his friends and family as a charismatic and outgoing guy with a great sense of humour. In the weeks after Alan’s death, a group of Alan’s close friends gathered together and formed The Alan Leetch Memorial with the aim of raising funds and awareness for the problem of Suicide in Ireland. Alan was a keen pool player so it seemed only fitting that the first event was a

pool tournament. The inaugural Alan Leetch Pool Tournament took place on Saturday 12th of May last upstairs in the Star Pool lounge in Swords. On the night 64 hardy competitors gathered together to battle for the first title and trophy. There was also a raffle on the night, with Barney Cantwell winning the grand prize of a Dublin Jersey donated by Paul Flynn and signed by the All Ireland winning team. The Alan Leetch Memorial committee would like to thank the Management and Staff of The Star for their support and generosity, particularly to Lorcan Tindley for his help in making it a very successful night. Also thanks to all who donated spot prizes and who helped out on the night. A very special thank you goes to Alan’s mother Colette and sister Fiona for their support.

Faulty Water Mains Overhauled In Swords The County Council will commence construction work on a faulty water mains connection in the Forrest Road area in Swords. This follows significant leaks in the area and reports of surface water at the junction of Cooks Road and Forrest Road. Fractured water mains and connection pipes have been repaired temporarily by the Water Services Department and will be rehabilitated fully in early 2014. Investigations by the local area engineer found that water mains nearby, and a branch connection, had fractured needing immediate repair. Both mains were taken out of action by the Council on 17th April and remained out of service for three days causing an

influx of reported water outages in Swords. In responding to a request from Cllr Darragh Butler (FF), the Council said “These water mains serve a significant portion of the North County and especially SouthWest Swords”. They added: “while it was possible to provide alternative supply arrangements for many consumers, a loss of service was unavoidable in some areas in the vicinity of Boroimhe, Ridgewood and River Valley.” The Council claim that the public were notified and updated of the unscheduled works. Plans to rehabilitate the branch connection mains are underway and construction is expected to begin in early 2014.

This is a week when it would be better to do something than suffer from uncertainty. Once you take action, all changes; as all the indications are that before the week is out you’ll be wondering what all the worry was about.

Feb 19 - Mar 20

In the process of satisfying others’ concerns, will you resolve a few of your own. However straightforward things seem, only after exciting developments around Friday will the picture - and your future - be clear.

The highlight is on business. Tiresome as this is, particularly during the week’s first half, you’ll soon be thankful for what you’ve learned. In fact, you’ll be calling on facts that, only recently, were boring numbers.

However cautious you are, you’re still likely to be blamed for whatever arises. While this is partly unfair, defending yourself achieves little. Biding your time does, however, as, before long, truth will win out.

Growing A New Trend In Skerries

Esquires Coffee, a North American coffee franchise, has just opened its doors in Airside Retail Park, Swords. Following the success of their Longford and Carrick-on-Shannon stores, franchise owners, Fergal McGovern and Rhona O’Sullivan are delighted to open their new Flagship store with plush seating for over 100 people and ample free parking for all customers. Fergal explained, “Because our offering in Carrick and Longford has proved so popular, we felt we needed to go for a store of this size which is over 5000 sq. feet. We are now open and we are very excited at the prospect and we look forward to offering the same level of service and comfort to patrons in the general Swords/ Malahide area.” Rhona said, “At Esquires, our main aim is serving that perfect cup of gourmet coffee. Another important feature of our new coffee house is a dedicated area we have earmarked for young children, where parents can relax and soak up the coffee house atmosphere while their children engage themselves in the Kids Zone play area,” “At Esquires we always strive to provide our customers, ‘young and not so young’ with excellent customer service and we invite readers of the North County Leader to come in and experience this for themselves.” says Fergal.

out the allotments and the pathways. We had a lot of ‘Meithil” days. That camaraderie has continued throughout the year and a half the allotments have been ‘bedding in’. “There’s a great community spirit there,” Mary says of the people found in the Skerries allotment. “People will help you out, you’ll always get suggestions and advice. The gardeners themselves range from a 17-year-old to an 83-year-old and they mainly grow vegetables. “We have a few community areas where we’ve planted willow and fruit trees to encourage wildlife into it, we’ve put down some apple trees as well; and we’re hoping to develop a few other areas with perennial flowers. “It’s very diverse, I started off not knowing very much and through trial and error have reached the level I’m at. I’ve been about 10 years at it and am still learning, still making mistakes,” she said. Now she spends her gardening time between the allotment and her own garden. “I spend a few hours on the allotment and then spend maybe two hours on my own garden. I’ve put the onions, garlic, and especially the asparagus (‘it’s tricky,’ she explains, ‘so, I don’t want to be looking at it growing outside my own window’), raspberries and strawberries on the allotment.” During the winter she covered it with compost and manure, and added some green manure, which is a growing red clover that you dig back into the soil. Mary and husband, Cathal have found that there’s a side benefit to escaping to the allotment. “My husband loves spending time up there too, escaping from teenagers at home,” she laughs. “As much as they want to escape from us we want to escape from them too.” Her mind obviously flicks back to the Leitrim introduction she had to growing food: “I know myself as a child I’d no interest, but it grows on you. It’s a very sociable pastime”, she adds. “We’d have monthly Grow It Yourself meetings where we’d organise talks or garden visits, seed and seedling swaps, it’s usually about 30 people and they’re free and we learn from each other.” Management of the Skerries allotments is still a voluntary effort: “We have a committee set up and I’m chair person, there are six of us on the committee, and some of the tasks we take on would be in bulk-buying communal seeds, plants or equipment that attract a discount. “Because of the diversity of the gardeners, we’d have locally produced food rather than organic. There are people who grow organically who don’t use pesticides or fertiliser. “The first year we didn’t have very many slugs but they’ve all come in with different manures and composts, and of course, the vegetables are luring them.” Gardeners interested in joining Grow It Yourself will find the established crew In Joe Mays for the monthly meetings, which are usually on the second Monday of the month. And anyone hoping to avail of the County Council administered allotments, such as the Skerries, Donabate or Blanchardstown allotments should contact the Council’s Parks and Heritage division on 01-8905000.

Grow It Yourself is literally a growing trend throughout Ireland. It is renewing the skill base for another generation of plants men and women and is offering a forum for gardeners of every hue on the proverbial scale of ‘40 shades of green’. Mary Marsden runs the Skerries GIY group and her commitment as a voluntary local organiser has grown organically alongside her skills as a plants woman. “I like growing my own food,” she tells the County Leader. “My parents would have grown vegetables when we were younger,” she recalls of her childhood in Leitrim. “I suppose their having five children, it was easier to grow your own then. I started in our garden here in Skerries with flowers and vegetables, I enjoyed the aspect of growing and began with potatoes, carrots and onions – the basics – and a few herbs. It was relatively easy to get started and quickly found that I didn’t have enough room.” Her initial success in growing vegetables sprung from a font of knowledge she had already acquired as a coordinator of green schools in the Holmpatrick National School. Having moved on from the basics in her own garden, she began to look into the idea of allotment gardening. “Barry Brady, another local gardener, and I spent a lot of time finding out about the interest there would be in Skerries in allotments, I was always interested in green gardening, and Barry is very knowledgeable on growing.” They put up notices in local shops, did a mailshot and got 150 responses. With that figure in mind they contacted the County Council. Liaising with the council, Mary and Barry knew they had the makings of steering committee that could transform the idea into a working group. Now we’ve 220 allotments on the Golf Links road and they’re a mixture between conventional gardening and organic gardening. We’ve been a year up and running since March,” she says. From the initial responses of 150 people it has gained popularity with like-minded gardeners who enjoying growing their own food. There’s still more people looking for allotments now they know they’re there. The allotments are five by ten metres square, which is €50 a year, and 10x10sqm, for €100. “The Council are in charge,” she explains of the process of allocating the land, setting the fees, and being the first point of contact for anyone interested in taking on community allotments. In the case of the Skerries group, the types of growers range from conventional gardeners to organic gardeners and there are ‘transitional’ allotments too depending on your skills. Barry was interested in organic growing too, and the allotments are ‘green’ to the extent that they have a solarpowered pump that feeds water from the stream on the site to communal troughs for irrigation. And they encourage people to have water butts too. “Our gardeners would be about two thirds conventional to about a third of the allotments having skilled organic gardeners. “It did take a year and a half between getting the land and it being ready for uptake of the allotments. A lot of it was done voluntarily in marking

FOREST ROAD, SWORDS TEL: 01 8402303

With the continuing unrest in the financial markets and the difficulty with getting loans for practically everything, including a new car, the emphasis on car care has shifted dramatically. With this in mind, many people are unable to buy new cars and are reluctant to upgrade to newer models. The importance is now on making sure that your car is kept in the best shape possible, as it may have to last longer than you had planned for. The prominence and standing of a good, reliable spare parts outlet has never been more important than now. Swords Motor Factors, located on Forest Road fits the bill ideally in this regard, with ample free parking for their customers. The company was set up originally 30 years ago and was acquired by brothers, David and Leo Neary, eight years ago. Warehouse and Administration Manager, Gavan Bermingham spoke about the marvellous improvements made to the shop recently. “We redesigned the original shop and brought in a full range of new product lines. proven to be very successful,” said Gavan. An example of the wide range of products on sale include all of the latest makes, including brands like, Apec, Bosch, Hella, Fram, Blueprint, Firstline, among others. As a sign of the times we live in, many of our customers are retail ones. They come in to buy their own service kits, paint and DIY kits in an effort to allay the cost of servicing their cars. The proprietor of Swords Motor Factors is David Neary. His father, Leo Neary Senior founded Lusk Motor Factors in 1982. David and his brother, Leo Jnr soon joined the business and learned their trade here. It’s a family run business, which always brings with it, a degree of reliability and customer care that is not always apparent in other businesses. Swords and Lusk Motor Factors are subsidiaries of Lusk Motor Group, who are a main Subaru dealer and one of the best known car dealerships in the country. David and his brother Leo have brought with them the ethos of honesty, hard graft and customer satisfaction. This is reflected in the friendly, professional staff, who are always at the ready to help out customers who may not always be knowledgeable about how machines operate. There is a very extensive battery section, which caters for all types of batteries, from cars, motor bikes, marine, golf carts to others. Just ask one of the staff and they will be able to help you. This company always

put their customers first. They are their main focus at all times. Swords is an ever expanding community and they have grown some really loyal customers along the way. Much of this is down to their professionalism and friendly demeanour, as it is to their extensive range of top class products. They have a young, enthusiastic, helpful staff, who will cater for your every need and are fully trained to the highest level in all aspects of the business. Their wide range of stock means that there is nearly always something there to suit everyone.

With the Irish Traditional Italian Chippers Association (ITICA) National Fish and Chips Day happening on May 30th, it’s the perfect chance for all you Fish and Chips (or chipper) lovers to get your hands on prizes and that yummy grub for half price all on the day. It is a well known fact in Ireland that the majority of chippers are run not by the Irish but by Italians! The history of the Irish Italian community goes back to origins when Italians arrived in Ireland in the 1880’s. All members of this community come from the villages in Val Di Comino in Southern Italy. These families bore the names well-known at the local chipper today. The Irish Traditional Italian

Chipper Association was formed to celebrate the unique identity of these chippers in Ireland and to mark the contribution they have made to the community. Most residents here in the North County strive at one point or another to get that undeniable taste of fish and chips from the chipper in their own homes, but this task will prove very difficult! The chippers

located in our local areas all serve high quality, tasty food that will seldom be matched elsewhere. The national Fish and Chips day will provide a perfect platform for these businesses to really show off their skills, give the customer the best fish and chips they can offer and all at half price too. If you’re not a fish fan, don’t worry. You can still enjoy the chips and your local chipper has a host of alternatives on offer, from burgers, chicken and those all important battered sausages. Should you purchase your portion of Fish and Chips from any of your local ITICA chippers, you will receive a scratch card which will give you a chance to win a host of instant prizes, such as two trips to the European Championships (Including flights, accommodation and tickets to 2 matches) and thousands of other instant scratch card prizes. So go and get your half price fish and chips on May 30th and you could be one of the lucky winners. All ITICA outlets are owned by Irish Italians who are as proud of their heritage as they are committed to preserving the hard earned reputation for serving the best fast food in Ireland.
