Rush Youngster An Inspiration To Us All Young Nathan Broderick is an example to us all. Nathan, aged 11 from Rush was so upset at the closure of the Fry Model Railway in Malahide Castle, that he decided to take matters into his own hands. Nathan, a student at Rush National School decided to contact Councillor Ciaran Byrne, asking him to explain why the model railway was being removed. Byrne suggested that he write a letter to the County Mayor, Ken Farrell and he was assured that the

Mayor would respond. Nathan, whose family is steeped in the history of trains, his father and grandfather having worked on the railways, then decided to draw up a petition, seeking a reversal of the council’s decision. He lobbied his friends and school pals and received a hugely impressive 300 signatures from both Rush and Skerries, adults and children alike. His proud mother, Lorna told the County Leader, “It’s amazing the amount of people who are upset at the closure of this railway. It has had a huge impact on people all over the

By Patrick Finnegan North County. Everyone is talking about it - it even was mentioned on Joe Duffy’s programme,” said Lorna. People are upset that the entire building is being removed, including the Craft shop behind it. “All people are looking for is that the facility be located in the North County, where it can be visited. It’s only open in summer and should not cost much. It is a great draw for tourism,” said Lorna. The petition was handed to Mayor Farrell by Nathan in the company of

friends and family at County Hall in Swords. The mayor was clearly impressed by the endeavours of this civic minded youngster and told the County Leader, “The petition is now in the hands of the County Manager and I have instructed him to hand it over to Dublin Tourism, who own the project. I have assurances that this will be done,” he said. Hopefully the inspiration that Nathan has shown can be an example to us all and will be replicated in all areas of society. If so, then we can have genuine hope for the future.
