American Youth Leadership Program with Cambodia A Program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Youth Programs Division Managed by Global Explorers

Dear Educators, Students and Parents: Thank you for your interest in the American Youth Leadership Program with Cambodia (AYLP). This exciting program, funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Youth Programs Division, will bring together students and educators of diverse backgrounds from across the United States for a once in a lifetime 26-day expedition to Cambodia in June 2012. Participation in this competitive program will be an honor for all who are selected, and the impact of the experience will last a lifetime. I encourage you to consider this amazing opportunity for yourself, your child or your students. This program is part of the U.S. Department of State’s efforts to offer American citizens different opportunities to learn about global issues through cross-cultural exchange. The Cambodia program is managed by Global Explorers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring responsible global citizenship through life-changing educational travel programs. We work with school groups, individual travelers, zoos, museums and other educational institutions across the U.S.A. We challenge participants to think critically about our world and their role in it and feel the empowerment that comes with an authentic, fun, adventurous and educational travel experience. Our participants leave our programs with a powerful sense of purpose. Our programs follow a 3-phase model: 1. Preparatory Learning, 2. International Expedition, and 3. Followup Leadership Action. Through all of these phases, students learn about our core subject areas of leadership, service, science and culture through handson activities. We want to inspire curiosity and reflection, and ultimately encourage students to use the experience as a way to enhance their own lives and the lives of those around them.

The Global Explorers AYLP will emphasize the themes of Environment and Climate Change and Conservation and Sustainable Development. Pre-travel learning will take place via teleconferences, webinars, enrichment activities and an orientation retreat in San Francisco, CA with journalism experts from Afar Media. Applicants of all economic backgrounds and physical abilities are encouraged to apply for this exciting exchange program.
