About this Book and New Mural Introduction by the Chairman

Elders and Fyffes Elder Dempster & Co and Fyffe Hudson & Co. Ltd become Elders & Fyffes. Fyffes first ship to feature banana cooling equipment completes its maiden voyage, travelling from Avonmouth in England to Kingston in Jamaica to collect a cargo of bananas. This ship, the SS Port Morant, was part of the first fleet of dedicated banana carrying ships. Before this time the transport of perishable cargoes was a hit and miss affair with bananas stacked on deck and condition on arrival dependent on the prevailing breeze. Fyffes was the first company to have vessels specially constructed for the transportation of bananas.
