Inner Sound present the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta
Inner Sound are delighted to be back at SMO again performing one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most popular operas. The Pirates of Penzance centres around Frederic, who, having reached his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of a Major-General, and they fall in love. Frederic soon learns, however, that he was born on the 29th of February and so,
technically, he is only four. His indenture specifies that he remain apprenticed to the pirates until his “twenty-first birthday”, meaning that he must serve another 63 years, bound by his own sense of duty. Inner Sound is one of Scotland’s leading amateur G and S production companies. Anne Lampard MBE has for years been training generations of singers, some of whom now work in the professional operatic circuit.

JAZZ FILM: BIRD (1988)
Plus a live set from the Jazz Ambassadors Director Clint Eastwood, a noted jazz aficionado, directs this heartfelt study of pioneering bop saxophonist Charlie Parker (Forest Whitaker). Moving forward and backward through Parker's brief life before his death of a heroin overdose at age 34, the film foregrounds the saxophonist's difficult relationship with his wife, Chan Parker (Diane Venora), but also features lengthy scenes of Parker improvising on stage, lit with the neon and cigarette smoke of vintage jazz clubs. 155 minutes
