File size and size in pixels for individual photographs varies, but only slightly. Your selection of which file to download depends upon the purpose for which you wish to put the image in question. The most detailed information is clearly in the largest TIFF image, but some of these are massive files (larger than 150MB) and the trade-off is a longer downloading time and the space it takes up on your computer. “The photographer’s assistants,” ca. 1873, from the William Henry Jackson photographs in the Detroit Publishing Co. Collection, Library of Congress. The number of digitized photochrom images is a very small percentage of the total in the DPC collection—less than one percent. “The Captain Visger in Lost Channel, Thousand Islands,” (below) was taken around 1901. Captain Visger was built as a yacht in 1895 for W. L. Visger, who ran boat tours throughout the Thousand Islands.
