Built in 1908, Wood Island Life Saving Station rem ained in service until 1948, when its role was taken over by a station in nea rby Porrsmouth H arbor. Surfmen operating out of the Wood Island station h ave been credited with saving more than 300 people. Work began last summer on removing lead and asbestos and cleaning out the 7,600-square-foot structure; the first phase of restoration began in November. The Wood Island Life Saving Station Association continues to seek fundin g to meet the full cost of the proj ec t, w hi ch m ay reach a total of $1 million .
