At a time when a number of historic ships are either in dire need of a new home/owner or funds for restoration, the storied 45,000-ton battleship USS Iowa is being fought over between two non-profit groups in California, each seeking to acquire the ship for use as a floating museum. So far, the US Navy has donated 47 ships to non-profit grou ps. USS Iowa was built in 1943 at the New York Navy Ya rd in Brooklyn, NY. . . . Applications for the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Summer Workshop for community college faculty are being accepted right now.
